Heitinga sent off in World Cup final
Everton‘s John Heitinga has been sent off in the 2010 World Cup Final in South Africa.
The 26 year old was sent off for a second yellow card offense in the second half of extra time after bringing down Andres Iniesta who was clear through on goal had the Dutchman not pulled him back.
He had already been booked on 56 minutes for “unsporting behaviour” and when faced with the choice of preventing a goal and sacrificing himself for the team or potentially losing the World Cup, Heitinga chose to give his team-mates a chance without him.
However, with four minutes remaining, Andres Iniesta found himself free in the penalty area to smash the ball in to the Holland net.
