Roll up, roll up!

It’s that time of year again; the Sky Sports circus is in town. The cameras are ready, the presenters have had their hair bleached and nipples sharpened and Harry Redknapp has had food wiped off his chins, all of them. It must mean one thing, the transfer window has opened.

The drama of the window was built up by Sky Sports News in that anticlimactic way they just seem to adore. An official count down and some dramatic music drew the audiences in and, as the famous ‘bongs’ of Big Ben graced our screens, it all seemed worth while as we eagerly read how Gareth McAuley had joined West Brom from Ipswich. Wow.

Maybe it’s because I’m an Everton fan, but I just can’t buy into this whole transfer window garbage. The rumours and what if’s are as original as a Black Eyed Peas song. So far Everton have ‘Signed’ Jay Bothroyd, Miroslav Klose, Joey Barton and Demba Ba to name just a few, making a pinch of salt an essential accessory for all Blues supporters this summer. It’s only a matter of time before the annual Alan Smith rumour comes floating around again as well as our late, last minute bid of £100m for Kaka or Ronaldo. “What? We’re too late? Oh, what a shame.”

It’s no secret that we are short of cash and that we do need money desperately, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have any success in the transfer market until we get some. The over used example’s of Moyes’ success in the market completely outweigh his ‘bad’ signings. It’s all well and good complaining about the signings Moyes may or may not make, but when you are competing in this market, you have to work with the cards you are dealt.

With teams such as Villa spending £18m (potentially rising to £24m) on a player of Darren Bent’s calibre, its a very tough business to work in, we just have to trust Moyes. It’s not his fault he has no money and in all honesty, keeping hold of our players is as important as bringing someone in at the moment. I could sit here and name at least 10 players we should or should not bring in but it wouldn’t mean a thing. It’s easy enough for everyone who sits at home, playing on football manager, eating Doritos and slurping fosters, to say what’s going right or wrong, but they aren’t the ones in charge of the club, they aren’t the ones working with the players day in day out, with the finance of the business, the contracts, the agents and all the background work that goes into every single movement.

Fair enough we all want the best for this club and we want the best players but until we have some serious money to spend, we have to put our faith in the manager and the scouting system that is already in place. Next season will see some of the younger lads come through such as Vellios and Magaye Gueye (a personal favourite of mine), with Wallace and Aristote Nsiala signing new deals as well as Tyias Browning and John Lundstram signing two year professional contracts, there is a lot to look forward to.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t buy in the market (I am far from saying that!!) but I am saying that we have to trust in our gaffer and most importantly, not listen to all the rumours, they’ll only make you go blind!
