Victor Anichebe- Not good enough

Homegrown talent could be the answer

Short Stories
Defender Darren Dennehy played the whole ninety minutes as Ireland U21's lost 3-1 to Nigeria in the second game of the Under-23 Intercontinental Cup tournament this aftenoon.

Ipswich's Billy Clarke struck for Ireland. Ireland face Iraq in their final game on Tuesday.

Rumours in the Italian media have linked Victor Anichebe with a move to German side Bayer Leverkusen.

With no quotes, and no figures mentioned, this rumour is far-fetched at best, but keep your eye out for Germans in suits at West Derby cashpoints...

Lee Carsley could make a shock move to Birmingham City, according to the Sun.

He will get a two-year deal — double what we are offering.

Article Recent threads about our board's apparent lack of ambition have inspired me to write this article.

I've been giving a bit of thought about what can be done over the next five years or so if investment doesn't arrive at the club.

Surely if we are sticking with the same people at the helm then transfer funding is going to be less than our would be rivals i.e Aston Villa, Spurs, Newcastle (Blackburn are ommitted from this as they seem to be operating on a similar if not less budget than ourselves).

So what can we do? Well there are clear signs that Moyes is planning for the future of the club by taking a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson's and Arsene Wenger's book by bringing in talented youngsters and grooming them for the future.

Obviously some of these aren't going to make the grade but when you consider the likes of Vaughan, Anichebe and Rodwell breaking into the first team squad in recent seasons then I can't help but feel that the future is bright at our club.

Other talented youngsters like Jack Rodwell, Kieran Agarde are also likely to push through in the next couple of years, and there seems to be excitement regarding the futures of Karl Sheppard and possibly Lukas Jutciewicz and it's a bit like the Fergie Fleglings of the mid nineties, let's hope that these kids can prove to be as successful for us as the likes of Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, Butt, Neville were for United.

We still need to spend as big as we can in the transfer market at the same time of course, because it's going to be a few years before we see the best of these kids and we need some quality older players to come in and help these boys develop into the talent that we all hope for.

I have always wanted to give the youngsters a go but while the 1st team is so small we cant afford to be playing the kids in the likes of the Carling Cup etc as something like that represents our only viable chance of silverware.

I was hoping that we might have nicked a point on Sunday so we might see Rodwell get a start or maybe Baxter on the bench.

I remember Rooney sitting on the bench for a good few games before he got on so hopefully we will see the likes of Rodwell and Gosling getting a game soon. I mean they cant be that much of a risk compared to Hibbert and Carsley (apart from the lack of experience).

Edit, you say they are not much of a risk compared to Hibbert. Well, I've seen a rezzie match where Hibbert played and it looked like a man playing against kids. It was amazing to see how he bossed the opposition and it was ManUtd reserves, not some pub team.

I haven't often seen the rezzies play, but as far as I can see, the three main problems are muscle, muscle and muscle.

It's not often you get a kid like Vaughany or Rooney, who has the physique needed for the first team at 16.

That said, we should concentrate on giving young players a chance because at the moment it's the only thing that can make us more attractive than the money clubs. Arsenal or Chelsea might be more glamorous but from our academy you can actually reach the first team, this should be our message.

Physical stature and toughness are no doubt one of the main problems with playing 16 year olds but i think that technical ability is far more important.

Look at players like Bojan and Messi, Owen (the 16 year old) etc.

Granted they are all strikers but they are hardly getting kicked all over the place every match.

If a player with greater technical ability is available over a player of greater physical presence then i would undoubtedly pick the former. Im not saying you can have a team of midgets but the positions we're talking about dont always require brute force. Even playing in defence doesnt always require great strength, just to be able to put in a good challenge and to be able to read the game (See Cannavaro and Cordoba)
