Joleon Lescott has surprisingly retained his place in the England squad, having been poor all season for Everton. Lescott - who has looked a shadow of his former self - looks set to be involved for the games against Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Printer friendly version  Email to a friend. It's Kirkby or Death
Posted by Written by Si on 23 Jun : 17:34
Article Yesterday, David Prentice set the wheels in motion on the "Kirkby or Death" train in the Echo, hinting that without a move to Kirkby, David Moyes would be hamstrung as far as transfers were concerned and be forced to look in the bargain basement for additions to his squad. It's Kirkby or certain doom, it would seem.

A decision is expected by July 3, but if the plans are called in by the government for public scrutiny the entire ground-move scheme would be threatened and Everton’s immediate spending plans affected.

This is quite an odd thing to suggest, especially when the Government Office North West is currently considering whether or not to send the scheme to Hazel Blears for a 'call in' which will apparently add around £6m to the cost of the scheme - if it passes a public enquiry.

Surely Mr Prentice isn't arguing that Everton Football Club - a multi-million pound, multi-national company, whose main business is participating in the richest football league in the world - has failed to budget for a potential stadium failure? Surely he's not trying to tell us that, as well as having no 'plan B' as far as stadia are concerned, our highly paid Chief Executive Officer hasn't managed to ensure Mr Moyes can spend regardless of the outcome?

Or is he sewing the seeds of yet another rift in our fanbase? If the stadium is called in, and Moyes is presented with the kind of budget that greeted him when he first arrived, then it will all be KEIOC's fault, or the no voters, or Bill, or Keith, and the bickering will continue. What if it gets worse? What if Moyes walks? No-one would blame him if he was offered a few pennies to spend, it'll all be someone elses fault - and the bickering and in-fighting will intensify.

But what difference does Kirkby make? If it fails or if it succeeds should have no impact on this summer's spending. If it succeeds, Everton have to pay several million pounds upfront to different people in Kirkby in order to start work - this will be borrowed on the back of shirt sponsorship / stadium naming rights / selling the family jewels - which will have no impact on anything the manager could be spending, unless that is to be funded by borrowing.

If it fails, then the borrowing to pay those individuals and companies is no longer necessary - which also has no impact on David Moyes' budget, or at least a positive one, as the borrowing for his spending is the only borrowing necessary.

Unless there's another dimension? What about the new shareholders? Mr Robert Leigh (to give him his birth name) for instace? Was he 'sold' on the Kirkby scheme like Paul Gregg was 'sold' on the King's Dock? Will a stadium failure lead to him pulling the plug and asking for several millions of pounds back - as well as wanting to sell his shares?

What about Phillip Green? He is rumoured to have put up the money for Leigh to buy into Everton - was he 'sold' on the back of building new stores for his Arcadia Group at Kirkby? Will he want his money back if this fails to materialise?

Surely these last two scenarios are within the realms of 'scaremongering' or 'conspiracy theory' and not at all likely to happen - which, as this is clearly the case, would have no impact on David Moyes' spending this summer.

There is another, more positive slant on things though - what if there is money that would have been spent on Kirkby stashed away in a back office at Goodison? Would that money then be given to Moyes? Could the death of the Kirkby scheme result in David Moyes having a "super-budget" and stun the footballing world by bringing in Andrei Arshavin, Joaquin, and another three or four of the hundred or so players we've been linked to this summer?
