What is going on with this website? I feel like im being stalked.

Recently when i've been browsing the forums I keep seeing adverts for other websites i've recently been looking at, whether directly or other websites similar to it.

For instance, I was looking at clothes on Debenhams the other day, and now I keep seeing an advert for the same thing I was looking at on the Debenhams site.

Ever since I started the fitness thread there's been the fitness singles thing in my face every five minutes.

I bought some "Craghoppers" trousers in town yesterday and googled their website when I got home to see what else they had. No im being bombarded with ad's for outdoor gear and other such travel websites.

It's fucking spooky, un-nerving and im pretty sure I would imagine there to be privacy issues surrounding it.

What's the deal Si? are you fucking spying on me or selling details of my IP address on to other firms?

It doesn't happen to me on any other website.

I'd hazard a guess that all of these websites are advertising through Google Adsense, which is part of the advertising regime on this website

Adsense recently introduced a new feature to advertisers where they could use Google's API to save a cookie to your computer, which would store details of what you had looked at on their sites.  Then, when Google Adsense is looking to serve relevant adverts to you, it looks for that cookie - stored on your computer from Debenhams for example - and reads it, allowing it to show you adverts for things that you have recently searched for.

You can easily block ANY website storing a cookie on your computer by checking your privacy settings

I bought a flight for Bob last week from KLM and I now see lots of KLM ads.  I'm not too bothered by it, and if anything it makes the adverts more appealing to you because it's sometimes based on stuff you've looked for already instead of random stuff you have no interest in

I'm not sure what's outrageous about it to be honest?

You visit their website, you look at stuff, the next time you click on a page which has code from an advertising agency they use, you see items from them that might interest you.

Most shopping websites will tell you in their T&Cs that they keep a record of your browsing history in order to help them "improve their service" and this is really just an extension of it.
