During the summer if we have a relatively good transfer window I think that we will have the quality in the squad to be able to make a good impact in the league. By good window I mean not selling our best players and bringing in Drethe, Stracqualursi, Pienaar and whoever else.

Since Saha left and was replaced by Jelavic and Dennis the meances performance against City I feel for the first time since Yakubu that our strikerforce actually has a bite to it. Our strike force will also be young meaning if it comes good we could have a good attack for a long time.

Jelavic (26) Stracqualursi (24) Vellios (20) Anichebe (23) Baxter (20)

Our midfield is also looking good at the moment with quality, pace and Darren Gibson... whistle. It also has players who are mostly under 25 which is positive as we will have time to build up over time and hopefully make something happen at the club:

Fellaini (24) Rodwell (20) Barkley (18) Drethe (24) Coleman (23) Gibson (24) Osman (30) Pienaar (29) Gueye (21)

While our defence and goalkeeing areas arent exactly young I think we can still get a good few years out of:

Howard (32) Mucha (29) Jagielka (29) Heitinga (28) Duffy (20) Hibbert (30) Baines (27)

Hopefully In the summer we will get rid of the rest of our older players like Distin, Neville, Yobo and Hannaman and replace them with younger players and finally have a good consistent season like 07/08 again. Does any other Evertonian feel as positive as me right now?

Defence is very weak in your overview.
Need 2/3 defenders in the summer then. That would give us a platform to be fighting for a european spot (based on more than 1 uefa place in the league)

We would still need a top international striker and maybe 2 top midfielders on top of that to be on par with the top 6 sides.

but basically Moyes is at the start of what Ferguson and Wenger have had to do a few times - starting a squad rebuild again. Thankfully he is doing so from a better position than he had to after Walter Smith

Lets not get ahead of ourselves here.

I was impressed by Straq's effort on Tuesday as well but aside from a lot hustling and harrying he didn't do a great deal.

Jelavic is the big unknown but if he weighs in at 1 in 3 i'll be elated.

Our strikeforce still needs a player of real class that we simply cant afford.

I agree we're at the start of a new cycle.

I think this would be our third under Moyes though.

The first one lasted up until 2005. There was then the nothing season of 2005/6 but the second cycle really started when we signed Howard, Lescott and AJ.

The second was facilitated (some) with money which was why it lasted longer than the first one; but obviously not having any more money ended it through having to sell (or not being able to add to) most of the best players in that period.

It's more now whether he's going to be around long enough to bring this cycle to life and some form of "success".

If rumors are correct, the £500k for the Gibson deal was funded by the Jutkiewicz sell on clause and the Jelavic deal was funded by the Billy sale. Penny for penny.

I fear we're going to have to sell to buy once again in the summer, which is a shame as I'd like us to make the Pienaar and Straq deals permanent without lessening the squad.

If we get 15+ for Rodwell this summer then we can continue to build a squad

I like Rodwell and think he will make a top player I just dont thing he fits Everton for whatever reasons

Had a header cleared off the line, set up Felliani brilliantly, and showed some class touches. I think he's more than just a work horse.

Pranjic to come in the summer would be a good move for the defence with him able to cover LB as well.  I think Coleman should start to get a look in at right back next season which would mean we would need another mid as well as tying down Drenthe and Pienaar imo and we still need another striker.  This is me talking about us being regular contenders for Europe again by the way.  The sale of Rodwell could help with this.

In defence we don't look to bad duffy looks like he has potential and i think manolas will be ours in the summer and coleman can play rb apart from lb we look like we have a potentially good young defence.

Same with midfield barkley rodwell gibson gueye look like they can be class squad players and felliani is only young and we know what he can do already. We need to sign drenthe and hopefully pienaar maybe sell mcfadden for a mil and use installments to sign pienaar

Upfront is 50/50 don't know if jelavic will be good enough but vellios is looking good and anichebe looks like hes getting back the form he showed in europe and if stracq plays more games like he did against fulham and city he needs signing would like to see us go for hugo in the summer as well

The only question is if we can find funds to do this and if we can we will be close to the top 4 spot again but we will still be short of real quality to get in that top 4

I think getting Pienaar and Drenthe on permanent deals, as well as getting Pranjic in will be a very good place to start.
Anybody else coming in will most likely be due to selling someone (Rodwell?).

I was gonna say there are always bosmans though, who's available in the summer? I know there can be agents fees/signing-on fee etc but if we can get a decent striker through a bosnman then you never know.

This. If we got those three in and sold rodders for £15-20m which has been touted around and we could use that to get in another midfielder and another forward i would be happy enough

IMO, gibson is being lined up as fellaini's replacement.
