Title: Olympics 2016
Post by: Goaljira on July 23, 2016, 03:25:16 AM
A girl who didn't make the US olympic squad has just smashed the 100m hurdles record that has stood for 28 years.

Whoops.

I was just going to post that. American record holder, had already set the fastest time of the year but finished 6th in the trials so didn't qualify then comes over here and sets a new world record.

Still can't help think it's going to be an awful football stadium.

Its just simply not a football stadium.  You're going to feel miles away if your sat at the back.

That's why i will struggle to watch anything regarding the Olympic. We will only find out in 10 years time who has been stripped of their titles.

Shame it's being overshadowed so far by all the Russia carry on and apparent poor organisation by Brazil, although it doesn't help that Rio is pretty much bankrupt.

Haven't looked that much into it but the Lizzie Armitstead story sounds a bit dodgy, cleared to ride despite missing three drug tests in 12 months. She's been cleared to race as the tester has been blamed for missing one as she was in a hotel, the hotel wouldn't give her room number out and the tester couldn't get hold of her as her phone was (conveniently) on silent and the third test was missed due to a family emergency. Understandably UK anti doping are looking into why she's been cleared to race. What a tainted medal that will be if she wins one.

On another note, can't believe it's 4 years since London.

This multiple missed test thing is proper dodgy, and took some of the shine off Mo Farah for me.  I understand that due to the randomness and frequency of the tests that maybe one test could get missed due to an emergency change in circumstances, but 3 in a year?  Part of your job is being able to fulfil the requirements of the anti-doping testing and you're aware of this going in.  If you don't meet the requirements you shouldn't be asked to represent your country.

And yeah, 4 years.  Where did that go?

In this day and age of mobile communications it's very difficult not to be contacted. I'm sure they need to give a list of an hour everyday and where they will be during that hour, so by sending that in they will know that at some point the phone will go or the door bell will be rung for a blood test. I get that it can be a ballache, but it's a bit like having a meeting or an appointment for an hour each day, stick it in the diary and be prepared for it. There really is very little excuse for missing it. Miss one, fair enough it happens, miss two and it's starting to look a little dodgy, miss three and you should take whatever punishment there is.

The BBC's athletics coverage is an absolute joy to watch and I don't think you can get a smoother, more knowledgeable, medal laden line up on the planet when they wheel the big guns out.

Colin Jackson, Denise Lewis, Jonathan Edwards, Michael Johnson, Steve Cram.

When they throw in the likes of Pendelton and Hoy to their presenting and punditry team you have to say fair play to them for getting these kind of people on board.

I think its a bit more complicated than that, in that they have to provide their planned whereabouts for a number of 1 hour periods each month, but they won't necessarily be tested on them all?  But yeah, we're in agreement that they miss three then its fair to assume that they're avoiding on purpose.

Depends what's finishing at that time!!

The weightlifting, boxing, diving, triathlon and track and field are my main interests so if I'm on nights when they take place it will be amazing!!

If Rhytmic gymnastics and synchronised swimming are the fare on offer then it will be an early night!! Or I'll just find something to do at work.

They may have a point, looks like power point presentation and give Gisele Bundchen a couple of quid to walk across the pitch. Or maybe I'm just bias but it's nothing compared to London so far.

Genuinely fear the worst for her after seeing her when the second motorbike filmed her.

Unbelivable by Adam Peaty, As i am sure anyone who has tried breaststroke and finding yourself moving a mere centimetres after every stroke will agree, its fucking astounding to me how he is able to do 100metres  in 57 seconds.

And although from a neutral perspective it aint great for competition, its a good feeling having a brit who just dominates his discipline so hard, its rare we get someone like that.

And im sorry to bring this into it again but he is just fucking gorgeous, he is the perfect mixture of power and grace and the fact the majority of the time we see him is in his tight fitting swimming trunks dripping wet is an absolute privilege. x

Contrasting emotions from the Chinese gymnasts compared to their divers, they've got bronze and look like they were told anything less than gold will result in 20 years hard labour in Outer Mongolia.

4th for GB, Lewis Smith dropped a bollock on the pommel horse and fell off.

But they don't have that swollen and bloated look plus covered in acne that you get with your average Joe who's pumped to eyeballs of AAS.

Of course I'm not naive enough to think it doesn't go on either. But I'd also just like to believe that it's all through hard work and training.

Been a bit shit I recks.

The attendances in the various venues have been piss poor and the atmosphere has been wank.

The vast majority of sports on the Olympic rosta simply aren't played in Brazil and ticket prices are the equivalent of 80% of the months wage for minimum wage workers.

Will get much better from Saturday when track and field start but so far, bar the odd highlight here and there they've been dissappointing for me.

I've liked it because ive watched more of the sports I've never bothered with before, rather than the quality of the competition.

Previously I've not really bothered with the first week apart from the odd swimming event.

The atheletics is pretty much the olympics isn't it.

Don't get me wrong, I like all the other sports like weight lifting, judo and fencing. racket ball and amateur boxing.

Things like football, rugby, golf, tennis etc shouldn't be an olympic sport.

If the pinnacle of your sport is the olympics, then it is an olympic sport. If it isn't, they shouldn't be in.

It needs to grow mate. There's a lot of trouble in the game ATM. French and English clubs are killing the game in both Hemisphere's by offering massive wages that the likes of the other Unions can't afford. Attendance at Super Rugby games are down, Australia are in crisis at admin and super club level and the ABs are demanding a 200% increase in match fees to play any international matches.

That's interestig. i know Super rugby attendances are down but that was more due to the expansion of the tournament and thus the crap rugby it is producing. They flogging it to death which is the problem i reckon.

Yeah. It was great as the Super 12/14. But 18 clubs now has sort of devalued it. I all for expansion but I don't think it was set out properly. The problems there are nothing compared to Europe though. The French clubs have signed a massive TV deal with Canal+ an most have rich benefactors too. Wages being offered are astronomical. not just to the superstars either, but to average players. Now the English clubs have got in on the act and signed a huge TV deal with BT Sport. They are chucking money left, right and centre. We've had a few young lads from Cardiff schools been poached by English clubs. They get them into a top rugby academy that they are attached o for A-Level, pay them a wedge and then when they've been a resident in England for three years they pressure them to change their allegiance to England. But you've got Saracens, the best club in England and Europe at the moment, with a £40m + debt. How a rugby club can carry on like that is something that we will find out in time.

The game at grassroots level in Wales is being decimated too because of payments. Local clubs used to Bing you a couple of pints after the game and give you a club hoody when you joined to keep you sweet, but lower league clubs are now suffering because some clubs can afford to pay players. I often get offered £50-£100 a game to turn out for a side if they are struggling (front rowers are hard to come by) but I know clubs who are paying £100 a game to every player at amateur level.,it can't continue

Considering the Aussies had a massive crash 2 days ago I think they just wanted to qualify for the final. They'll improve from that and should make the final very. very interesting.

Watching the cycling reminds me of a Chris Hoy story my sister's boyfriend told me earlier this year. He was looking after him at some event a few years ago, after he had retired.

The day before the event, they went out and he got absolutely blootered, smashing down all sorts of shots in between pints and whisky. He ended up going missing at the end of the night and my sister's boyfriend couldn't find him anywhere.

He went to bed about 5am and got up at 8am to look for Chris Hoy and there he is at breakfast, absolutely fine, no signs of a hangover and completely coherent.

The Scots are amazing.

There's an old story that's quite famous down here about Byran Robson being in the same hotel as the Welsh rugby team in the late eighties. He was abl to pack away the booze so well they had to drink with him in shifts, and he was still going the next day

We used to have a football team at the club, full of the young scally lads of the estate. They'd come back on a Saturday drinking their WKD Blues and such shit. They used to mouth off about their drinking prowess. So we took them out with us one night. The last one standing lasted to about 11.30 - just as we were going into the first club of the night. I got in about half six in the morning. That Sunday United were playing Liverpool on Sky so the club was packed. We were all there from opening time, drinking. The first and only one of the football boys arrived just before kick off and ordered a pint of squash. When we asked him where the rest were (as they were always up on a Sunday for a live game), he said he'd only had an answer from two of the calls he made to see if they were coming out to watch the game. Their response was "no fucking way, dying."

Ian Botham was/is a massive boozer too. Seen him in action with Viv Richards and with a few rugby boys when his boy played for Cardiff

I heard the best drunken sportsman story on the No Such Thing as a Fish podcast today.

At the 1953 Le Mans race, Duncan Hamilton's Jaguar team were disqualified because of an admin error that meant their car had the same number as another car. So Hamilton and his driving partner took off into town and went on the piss all night. The organisers realised that it wasn't fair disqualifying them, so they reinstated them. The Jaguar team manager went and found them at the bar and told them that the race was back on.

So Hamilton is brought to the track and helped into the car, massively pissed still, and sets off. At pits stops, his crew is pumping him full of coffee to keep him awake and to try and sober him up but he tells them that this was making him shake too much. So they start giving him brandy instead and just keep him a steady drunk.

During the race, a bird hit him in the face and broke his nose.

Despite all of this, he won the race and their team recorded the first average speed of 100mph for the entire race.

Nothing personal, you just question everything and ruin even the most relaxed threads looking for confrontation and arguments over the most trivial of things, it's like any criticism of any person you take personally and start questioning the person over it. Seriously, who gives a fuck why someone doesn't like Jonathan Edwards or Claire Balding.

Actually Con, I'll change what I said. Injured because I was pissed. Between College and Uni I played at a high level but didn't drink as I was also working. When I didn't make it professionally I dropped down the leagues and ended up helping to form the club that I spent a decade playing for. However, by that time I'd started to socialise more. The night after our first game we all went out to town. I slipped in the Loo, going over on my ankle. As I was in a 'jolly' state I didn't realise how bad it was. I hobbled around a bit and went home. When I woke in the morning my ankle was ridiculously swollen. That started a long term issue with my ankle. It's never been the same. I never got a serious injury from playing.

Absolutely incredible. She's 4ft 8' and when she was doing those tumbles, mid air, she's nearly 9ft up.

And absolutely nails every landing. Doesn't shift a millimetre on landing!!

The track cycling is the first event to really get me up shouting at team GB - awesome achievement already.

The stage really is set for the the cyclists now, bar raised, bring it on!

On a cycling related note.
I was there to watch the men's MTB in 2012 and went and rode the course last month. I recall looking and thinking it looked achievable to ride at their speed (even if I could no way keep that up for the duration they have to). Fucking joke! I near crapped myself at some of the black graded features! Great fun but really showed how talented these Olympians are.
For some stupid reason I'm taking my race mountain bike back there again for a blast next weekend....

Heptathlon's set up to be an absolute nail-biter. KJT had a bit of a meltdown in the shot, and isn't great at the javelin to come, but hopefully she can make up the gap in the long jump and give herself a chance in the 800m.

Ennis is just floating along serenely all the way, and the Belgian girl Thiam is looking very dangerous.

Gotta give Farah his props. To have a fall like that could've totally destroyed his chances, but he dealt with it like a pro. And the Ethiopians had been talking about how they had plans to take him out of the race by keeping a higher pace all the way through but they couldn't do it.

Basically, if Farah is within 10-15m of the leader going into the bell, he's won the race. No one can live with his sprinting speed. Steve Cram said he went to watch one of his training sessions last year, and at the end of doing thousands of metres, Farah finished with a 49 second 400m! That's absurd.

Gutted for Jess Ennis as well, but Thiam was unbelievable. Set PBs in 5 of the 7 disciplines.

There's a bit of the links style gorse/bush but yea other than that it's very open. Looks like the course was only built last week.

Probably explains why he looked a bit awkward during the whole interview and mentioned click baiting, he realised he'd dropped a bit of a bollock and been caught. You can see why people think he's a prick.

Anyone see the Pole Vault final? AMAZING. The French guy was the WR holder/2012 Olympic Champion and obviously head and shoulders above the rest, what he hadn't planned on is some cheeky Brazilian pole vaulter with a Lifetime Best of 5.93 just saying 'Fuck it, lets try 6.04' at which Steve Cram questioned his sanity (it was 11cm over his LB).

The Brazilian Dude cleared it. Stadium went nuts. Disbelief on the French guys face.

Also did you all see the girl in the 400m final literally THROW herself at the line to beat Alysson Felix? I thought that was great desire from the Bahamas athelte but Felix i felt for as she won everything in 200m but for some reason just keeps getting silvers in 400m and this time she came so close.

@Risky (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=10) could answer that better than me but I think there is a bit of north west in the accent? I always think he sounds like there's a bit of Irish in his as well and find him hard to understand at times.

Yeah his accent is a pretty typical one.  People from south of England often think it's scouse which is quite funny.  There's some scouse bits in there and also a bit of Irish like @Gash (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=14) says. In America I've often been mistaken for Scottish too.

Ultimately it is a distinct accent but I guess in the grand scheme of things there aren't that many of us so it doesn't get heard by most people.

Same in the wrestling. And judo.

Basically all the fighting sports are a fucking joke.

(Obviously not the sports themselves, just the way they're judged.)

The AIBA have totally changed the scoring system from the previous Olympics.  It's basically now scored in the same way that professional boxing is - which makes sense, as professionals are now allowed to compete in boxing at the Olympics. If anything the new system makes the contest easier to score.

I don't anything about wrestling or judo so can't really comment on that...have they changed the scoring for that too?

Got to be either the pommel horse or the rings I reckon.

Both require an incomprehensible amount of upper body strength.

I don't know if they've changed it, but I just saw a Hungarian lad lose a match in which he made one successful move and his opponent did nothing.

I'd go all Trump on these sports and drop them until they clean their act up.

Rings for me. The fact that they're on a pair of ropes, which you must pull inwards, while your arms also support your weight.

We actually did some at school. Well, I say we did, all I could do is hang and that's not even an actual move, it's just gravity winning.

I used to be able to do the crucifix move on them rings only from hanging position though couldn't do it out of the handstand, don't know why, I could rotate and stop, do a handstand and th e crucifix then just drop off but if I was just hanging I could pull myself to the crucifix hold for a bit then I was fucked, used to be able to somersault of the vault too but that was 30 years ago haha

The attendances have been poor in most stadiums but none more so than in the athletics stadium, really poor crowd again tonight. When Usain Bolt is running (last night) and you can't get what looks like a half full then you know you're in trouble. Got Greece written all over it this one, I can see the Olympic park full of rotting stadiums and tumble weed in a few years time.

They said on the BBC this morning that they're even starting to hand out free tickets just to try and get the stadiums full.

You know logistics so she whipped her keks off and started flicking her self off with it, fascinating to watch, just not in the pub we were in.

If ever a post encapsulated the Olympic spirit...

It's funny how, by omission, you can always make nursery rhymes sound incredibly lurid.

"Remember that slightly chubby girl, she was lovely...Humpty Dumpty they called her...was bedridden because of an accident...and you know, all the king's men...AND then the horses...she was never the same after that...the less said, the better really."

His buffoonery just meant that he failed to mention that Murray was the first tennis player to win two singles gold medals which is true.

Even if he was ignoring the women's side (and I don't think he was), surely he would have known Nadal won his second gold medal just two days earlier in the doubles?

Aye, you would assume, although he's not the brightest.

It's the withchunt mentality in the media, and on social media. There's loads of valid, justified reasons to dislike Inverdale based on sporting/commentary reasons, but people just jump on a bandwagon to crucify everything he says now, and then it makes the valid reasons disappear into the background with all the other noise.

I watched it. There was one second to go on the clock and the guy caught him with a desperate reverse back kick. The hooter to end the bout went off just after his opponents foot touched the ground after the winning blow. After years of training getting to the final and the 9 minutes hoping for gold, thinking you must have won it, having it snatched away like that in the last second was intense. Think about it. 1...2 :'(

He's got the voice for it. Really funny though is that many Welsh people can't stand him as they see him as a 'wanabe Englishman'. He played for the infamous Pontypool RFC in the Gwent Valley, but because he went to Cambridge University many see him as a snob. I like him. He's also written two rugby set novels.

Really can't understand why, frankly speaking I'm getting a bit fed up of some of these multi millionaires
who are paid a fortune for doing something that they love doing gobbing off about how fuckin hard they work, ffs, it's not as though they've been down the pits for a pittance is it, nor do I agree with the tabloids
labelling everyone that wins a gold as a "Hero" they are not laying down their lives or putting their lives at risk for others. Your Gold medal is the reward you get, not knighthoods and multi million pound endorsement contracts and quite frankly Mo's Qorn add is unconvincingly embarrassing.

If you saw the list of potential side-effects of the drugs they take, I think you'd quickly change your mind.

You're right in some respects (particularly the honours system, which I'm for to an extent, but not in the current format). However, to suggest that people like Farah don't work hard just because it's not a traditional low paid manual job is a bit unfair. To be the best, the very best, in the world requires massive sacrifices, to go with their unique talent, that I would say 99% of people would not be prepared to do. Yes, it's their choice, but they will go down in history and will still be talked about long after us average Joes are long gone, because of the hard work they have put in. You also don't have to lay down your life to be a hero. A hero is someone to look up to, someone who inspires and goes beyond the norm to get results. Heroes come from all walks of life.

The Quorn adverts are shit though

I look at the alternatives, the kind of people that get these honours (and don't for a moment believe this is a UK-specific thing, state honours exist everywhere and they tend to work roughly the same way), and my first thought is that sportspeople are by far the least undeserving recipients of such accolades.

Yes, it's a bit banal, but it's far preferable for countries to sublime their nationalism into sport than any other form of expression. And thus the state rewarding sporting achievements being is a good thing overall.

My Aunty was awarded one (MBE I think) as was my old Headteacher for services to nursing and education respectively. These are the types of people they should be for

Not for me like, until there's evidence to the contrary. Works unbelievably hard, and has the best finishing speed of any long distance runner in the world.

Those would be well deserved honours in my view, British Honours for British tax payers, Mo doesn't pay a single penny tax in this country.

Is that primarily though because he is based in Oregon for tea ING for most of the year? If that is the case then I wouldn't expect him to pay tax here if he wasn't a resident. It's also a bit too black and white that view isn't it? Are you saying that no matter what good things you do, what accomplishments you make if you don't pay tax to Britain you shouldn't be awarded an honour? What about Brits who live abroad but have done things that are awarded by an honour. Should they not be allowed to receive one because they pay no tax to Britain? I'm not trying to pick an argument here btw.

Fully appreciate you not trying to pick an argument but would you agree that Usain Bolt would have to receive a nighthood if Mo does ?

It seems ABA boxing judges favour defence and the odd accurate jab rather than a total barrage of shots.

Another farcical decision.

How does it work with someone like Bolt? Is Jamaica part of the Commonwealth? I don't actually think Mo Farah should be knighted, but there is precedent with the likes of Redgrave, Pinsent, Wiggins and Hoy - but that presents another question - are their achievements greater than Farah's, making them deserving of a knighthood?

To go back to your original question - if Farah was to be knighted then of course Bolt should (if it's possible) as I don't think anyone will beat what he has done

Think Joyce played into his hands a bit. He knew that he had to go for it (especially having lost to him in the World Championshios) and try and get past his defensive strategy. However, he left himself open a number of times after he'd thrown his punches. He can be immensely proud of what he's achieved though - only taking up boxing at 24. I do agree about the standard of boxing judging throughout the games though.

Yes of course Jamaica is a member of the Commonwealth and the Queen is head of the Commonwealth,
You have Sir Garfield Sobers and Sir Vivienne Richards already so next one would be Sir Usain Bolt if Mo is knighted.

I thought so, but I had one of those brain fart moments. Yeah, he should be knighted. He is the definition of a sporting legend.
