I think the idea of Sigurdsson on the left works with an attacking left back who will get over the half way line and have that as his starting position, allowing Sigurdsson room inside. Makes Allardyce comments even more infuriating and simple, as Sigurdsson has worked extremely hard to cover ground to cover for Martina, except perhaps against Spurs.

The idea that there’s a PL player that’s been hiding away for 2-3 years is fanciful.

Even if he did have it once, to then suddenly be able to turn it back on would be remarkable.

No one has been talking in these 2-3 years in terms of “when Garbutt does x y or z”.

As always the number of games was so few (and the majority in Europe where it can be more open) that firm judgements were impossible.

Plus should always be cautious when a defender’s most eye catching bits are attacking elements. Easy to remember the bright shiny bits of play and forget the bread and butter.

Garbutt was registered last week and was training with the first team. Performances in training weren't good enough and that's why he didn't make the bench.

Suppose that could change over the next week or so, so don't be surprised to see him in the squad or the 11.

Six points off Leicester in 7th but only 6 points ahead of relegation zone. A defeat against these and we're bang in trouble again, especially with Arsenal away the next game up after this.

We’re in a the relegation mix now. A couple of wins and we’re not, but right now it’s more likely we’d get 0-1pts in these next couple of games. Chances are that’d leave us maybe 3-4 pts off the bottom 3.

My silver lining are the signings, with a new striker and Walcott I think we have enough individuals with quality to grab points here and there.

I genuinely think up to this point we’ve been playing like one of the worst teams in the league. So the sooner we get the points we need the better.

EDIT:

I'll add on a more positive note, IF by some crazy Vardy own goal, or an actual convincing performance we beat Leicester, it'd likely give us enough momentum to have a crack at finishing 7th. Momentum is everything in this league right now. This is really a huge 6 pointer.

75 mil or something.

Do another Marco Silva. One team at a time.

How many weeks do you think in total you’ve felt since Martinez reign that out just do not know where the next win is coming from? Feels like absolutely loads.

I do feel this is a bit different at the moment. I thought we had a spine of a team, and with Lukaku a way to score goals that we'd have a chance in a lot of games. I felt when Martinez left, that team would be ok whoever was in charge (to an extent).

Right now (and it could change if somehow we can create a team out of these players), but in comparison to pretty much every team I've seen in the league this year we rarely look like a team with a purpose or identity. We're a team on paper only. We need to find a XI we're ok with and just try and stick with it for as much of the season as possible and try and create a team. I do think/hope the new signings would help with that.

Ideally mind you we'd consider, even a loan, for a couple more players. I do remain in hope that a midfield lynchpin would transform this team.

In some ways the 10 days to prepare for the next game is a good thing. In another way it isn't with no football, no chance to quickly put things right, and nothing for fans to do except criticise and worry.  The prospect of a defeat by Leicester who are a good side playing with some confidence, followed by our usual collapse at Arsenal  will send shock waves though Everton. The 12pts still needed will look a lot more scary after that.  Looking at the WBA game, Sam's remarks about his players being afraid of playing were spot on. I know they are paid mega money to fix it, but how do you restore confidence into scared players probably dreading playing in front of their own crowd?  I don't know, but I am getting scared that is for sure. Spare us please from taking it all the way to the wire. I thought I would never see that again.

He had plenty of time to prepare for the West Brom game, a full week, but they had two days off instead of working on how he was going to integrate three new players into the front three positions. Which might have been the reason they looked like three strangers in the first half.

City game would be H.

To answer the question, until we start seeing a cohesive performance it’s hard to be confident about any of those.

This first game (this one versus Leicester) is almost season defining for me. Lose and we’re going to be hoping to get safety at this rate 1 point at a time. If we find a way to win, with Burnley slightly slipping it could mean we stumble our way to 7th.

Again in an attempt to be positive we might be getting better suited to play those away games with the likes of Walcott and Bolasie (if he can get back to any sort of form) on the wings.

Well something needs to happen and quick, we are stale as fuck at the moment with no idea how to find space for each other or create anything, the only chances we really get are from set pieces, we are just not hungry enough to make anything work (Walcott aside, as you could see his frustration already against West Brom). It is means making us look even more of a laughing stock than we already are, just fucking get on with it and bring someone in who can at least play attacking and creative football, however, they will still need to give the players a shot up the arse to perform.
I can only see 7 pts max from that list.

I think Leicester have got a much better squad than us. And they’re an actual team; they have a way of playing and players know their job. Oh, and they’re nicely balanced with good options off the bench. We’re a fair way off these and think the league standings, come May, will reinforce that.

Dunno what to say about formation you know. I wanted sig in the middle, bolasie and Walcott wide and tosun up top and we were terrible until that was ripped up.

Maybe it’s time to face facts and 4-4-2 the fucker.

Picks

Kenny Holgate Williams/Keane Cuco

Walcott schneiderlin Gana Bolasie

                Sig/Rooney

                    Tosun

Rooney arguably the Prems best second striker ever and has scored and assisted plenty so far, let’s get him up near the box and get him on it? Sig would probably benefit as well.

Obviously the midfield is still an issue but wtf do you want me to do there.

Although Garbutt wasn't great last night I do think we will see him against Leicester.

I would like to see (and think it could well be):

Pickford
Martina   Holgate  Williams  Garbutt
Gueye  Rooney
Walcott        Sig       Bolasie
DCL/Tosun

I really think that having a left footed LB that can overlap Bolasie will see a massive improvement in our attacking play.

I think we forget how well Martina played at RB in the few games he played there, he's defensively sound and does get forward and help the wingers out, he just can't do that on the other side.

I think his completely shocking performances at left back have dulled people's memories to the truly shit performances at right back, he's not defensively sound and was a complete liability

From what I've seen he puts a mean cross in with his left, so I'm presuming it's his defensive capabilities that's the problem. Not looking forward to him getting rinsed by a decent winger.

Pretty much this, from when i've watched him he always misses the first man when crossing, although over hits them more than he should, his attacking side is far superior to Cuco, but defending is his failing, maybe too concerned about getting his hair ruffled.

I don't really care if he's a shit defender.

It's all about balance and we need to have natural attacking full backs for us to work otherwise we just defend with 6 and get pinned back.

Whereas Martina can't attack or defend, so Garbutt's got one plus. Plus he'll know it's shit or bust time so will be proper focused on his defending.

I haven't seen much of him this season but apparently he's been a really poor signing for them and they're even looking to move him on. The fact he's playing in the FA Cup and only has a couple of Premier League starts probably backs that up.

Critical game like Leicester on Wednesday with a predictably difficult home crowd is hardly the best place to try either of those two galoots. When we get safe and if they are still here (hopefully not) give them a meaningless game or two before we bin them off.

These are going to royally fuck us aren't they.

As hard as it is to care about this season, this is a pretty pivotal match.

Lose it and we're nine points off 7th and probably five points from the relegation spots.

Win it and we're 3-6 points (depending on Burnley at Newcastle) off 7th and eight points clear from relegation.

Kind of ironic this is the most I've been worried about us going down all season now and it's under the man supposed to ease those fears.

Interestingly enough  Palace took 4 points from Sam's  first 8 Premier League games, where thrashed 4-0 by Sunderland and there was no sign of change.  Yet they secured 5 wins from next 6 games, won against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and  demolished Arsenal 3-0.

Just sayin.

Seems like he's been doing it in reverse here. Off to a flyer points wise, then very little to show for recent games.

If we'd have gone on with exactly the same personnel it would've been extremely worrying given the decline. Most of my positivity at the moment comes from the recent signings as I think Walcott will help us in the attacking third and I'm fairly positive that Tosun with some more support will be ok. Also hoping we get someone in to play LB and Coleman comes back and is ready to contribute quickly (not super likely but Coleman and a better attacking LB threat would certainly help).

I think they do. I’d agree there’s lots of recognition about what he brings going forward, but not much about how he organises and solidifies us at the back.

In fact I just conducted a scientific analysis of opinions on here about why we’ve been shit defensively this season and
- 63.7% said it was because “Koeman is clueless”
- 1.5% because “Unsworth is out of his depth
- 17% “Williams is old and Keane is slow”
- 9% “Baines is a shithouse”
- 8% “Scheiderlein is a shithouse”
- 1% “Three Number 10s”.

You see? Coleman not even mentioned once.

Not sure why though. What do our fans expect? Apart from being the home team, can’t see what else we’ve got going for us. They’re got a better 11, better options off the bench and the core of players have been together for years and they’re an actual ‘team’.

Oh, but they’re ‘only Leicester’.

So true. They won the league 18 months ago, have a brand new stadium and an owner richer than ours as well. Everything about their whole setup leaves us trailing. A year ago we were hanging on the coat-tails of the top 6, now we're lagging behind Leicester.

Seeing as they have one of the best right sided attackers in the league I envisage Mahrez - Vardy down the inside right channel being a pretty popular, and successful, strategy. Can't wait to watch it.

That’s the thing though, the crowd have been awful this season. Not that you can blame them, there’s not been much to cheer about. Just that the fans haven’t really supported the players, they just give them shit all game and are desperate to get on Schnederlein, or Williams or Allardyce’s back. It’s toxic as we thought we’d kick on this season and we’ve gone backwards.

Again, perfectly understandable but how does a quiet, toxic Goodison benefit the team? We take the piss out of Palace and their plastic ultras but they support their team, week in, week out. Too many of our fans with a chip on their shoulder; we win 3-0 tomorrow they’d be plenty of ‘it’s only fucking Leicester’.

Yet if we push up, attack and get done on the counter we’ll be called naive. Lose/lose.
It’s the manager’s job to get the balance right between defence and attack but I don’t think Allardyce, Fonseca or Silva could get the balance right with these players.

I would suggest, although clearly I'm no football manager, that playing defenders who like to drop deep along with two and sometimes three defensive midfielders would leave yourself with a disjointed attacking strategy and make it pretty difficult to get a shot on target, let alone score a goal.

I give up

Hey, it's a good midfield. I bet we look a lot more competent overall, even if the back four and front three are less than ideal.

My biggest complaint is Niasse. Why can't we leave him to his super sub role? That's clearly what he's best at. Calvert-Lewin is a better choice if Tosun isn't starting.

I have to imagine that Holgate has a knock if he's not in. Seems like a no-brainer to include our best defender, and only defender with any pace, for this one. If that's not the case then I'm not sure what Allardyce is playing at.

He did but I don't mind them playing together.

Our only decent run of performances this season came with Rooney in the middle and Sigurdsson on the left. If Allardyce has remembered that... good.

Our left hand side is embarrassing. Sigurdsson, uncomfortable as a left winger who naturally cuts inside and leaves gaping holes and Martina, uncomfortable at left back = very comfortable evening for Leicester’s right back and right winger. <quickly adds Leciester to midweek acca>

True, but there's not a whole lot of choice over there. It's a squad planning/transfer market issue that Martina is our only current option at left back*. It's unfortunate that Sigurdsson is the only player we have who's done a decent job covering him.

It's a squad problem, not a tactical one. Allardyce is (partly) to blame for targeting less pressing areas, not for putting that team on the field with the squad he has at his disposal.

* Plenty of ITK reports that Garbutt has been awful in training before someone brings that up.

No I like the midfield 3 - hopefully Davies turns up cause he’s been badly out of form and we could do with more of his slide-rule passes in the final third he has in the locker every now and again.

I’m just really gutted about -

No Holgate?
Jags?
Having to admit gylfi will never work at 10 because we don’t play with a 10 so he is destined to probably disappoint on the left.
Niasse playing ahead of Tosun because yeah I agree he’s an amazing sub but if tosun isnt going to work as the man up top then frankly we’ve wasted our money and are at square one with DCL or Niasse which we know isn’t near enough for the Prem.

This is 10 days away because it's FA Cup this weekend.

Wednesday 19:45

Can't see anything but horrible defeat so I'll just post the team I want to see, excluding potential signings.

Pickford
Kenny Keane Holgate Garbutt
Gana Rooney Davies
Walcott Tosun Sigurdsson
I agree with the exception of Holgate. Think he needs a bit of a rest. I'd put Jaggs in

Sigurdsson works his arse off though and offers a bit of protection for Martina. It is a waste having a player like him out there but what’s the alternative? Imagine Lookman or Bolasie as ‘protection’ in front of Martina? Our defence is of such a shite standard, it impacts the rest of our team selection.

I think I said it earlier in the thread, but it's a massive, massive game tomorrow. Particularly with other even harder games on the horizon. Lose and we in terrible form heading squarely into a relegation fight. Win and I think we're likely able to take some much needed confidence and look up the rest of the season, particularly if Mahrez ends up leaving Leicester.

A dismal performance and a defeat and he deserves all the pelters he'll get thrown at him. He's been here a few months now, we should have as settled a team as we can and a definable system of playing, otherwise what's the point in paying him £6m/year. We could have achieved the same with Unsworth at the helm till the end of the season.

Holgate is a no brainer isn't he? Probably our best defender this season too.

It's hard to be too harsh on Niasse. I mean he made that second chance all by himself. He's got some good goals this season, just hasn't been his night so far. His workrate up there is still important.

Christ Niasse is not very good when he has to think.

It's massively his downfall. He has the instincts of a footballer, but not the brain.

First ten minutes were as bad as I’ve seen. Then we get a foot on it, stop hoofing it and moved to the point where we are bossing it.
Class from Walcott, sig and Rooney. Keane doing well too tbf. Great to see Coleman back too.
Only downsides are Niasse and Martina. Fuck me you could put them together and they still wouldn’t equal one good player.
Anyhow - enough of that - we’ll played blues.

Shame about what happened after we were cruising. Confidence is hard to come by when on a bad run of form and we just needed to get the win however it was done. Conditions probably didn't help the nerves either.

Great to see Coleman back and playing so well out the box.

Shit weather, 3 points, heart rate still above 90

Looking forward to MOD for once.

Ketwig Kaiser is the funniest thing I've heard in some time. Thank you for that.

Unfortunately I cant take credit for this haha. A pretty common nickname for him on twitter

Seamus is as hard as nails. No Psychological after effects with him. Walcott looks a quality signing and there was a lot of effort and passion tonight. Much better. ;D

It was like two new signings tonight on the right flank

Niasse shouldn't start a football match. He's an instinctive finisher against tired defences, he's not what you need leading the line to build an attack around.

To balance out the Niasse stuff, yes he should have scored a couple tonight however for large parts of the game we looked a lot better with Niasse, Walcott and Davies...not to mention Coleman buzzing around in the attacking third. We don't really have another forward like that.

I actually disagree on awful. He wasn't great but he wasn't awful. That being said we work much much better as a team with him in it. Im happy with players losing possession if theyre looking to move forward

I think people are overreacting on Tosun.

The weather tonight was horrendous, I can see how Sam took one look at that and gave Niasse the start. He’s ideal for a scrappy game in the rain

This was the formation posted a couple of days ago though. To be honest, it's not bad to work a player into a side.

Credit where credit's due (and to show up some of the moaning on here), those subs were perfect for the game. As soon as they were made we calmed down and started to have an influence on the game.

Lads did well tonight, in horrendous conditions. Those having a pop at Pickford would do well to remember that... both goalkeepers were playing in nightmare conditions for them.

Absolutely no guarantee that he’ll do a basic skill set in any situation.

You can’t have that as you’re forward option.

Fine he didn't play but have you ever been to Germany ( where he grew up ) or Turkey in winter . It is fucking freezing . It probably felt like March to him . He didn't play which is no biggy but fuck off with the daft excuses .

As far as the game goes it was better and Leicester have been playing well of late so all in all nice to see some effort . Niasse , Davies and Gana giving them little time on the ball and created that bit more space for Sig and Theo . Great to see Coleman back and play well .

Still gave them too many chances and on another night would have been a draw or worse . A very welcome 3 points none the less .

Allardyce represents everything that is wrong with the prem league managers he is tactically naive has the players terrified of actually using their intelligence and playing football. Then he criticises them and takes none of the  blame. Classic about players not remaining fit, does he not go to training. Koeman stated it was the fittest the squad had ever been.

Signs Tocsun plays him up front on his own does not get a sniff of a good ball all day we get tooled then drops him, great for the lads confidence. Plays Lennon in front of Lookman all season sells him and then signs Walcott then criticises Lookman for looking for some playing time elsewhere, what a tosser. We will only go one way under Allardyce and it is downhill all the young promising kids will be replaced by 26 year old mediocre knobs from all over europe.

Even though that game was nervy near the end it never should have been.

Had Niasse put away his chances we could have killed the game dead before half time.

Granted Leicester hit the bar in first half and twice in second half but that came after we where under pressure from conceding the penalty.

Liking the look of Walcott and Coleman down the right. Seamus was excellent and will get better, no way you would have thought looking at him last night he had been out for nearly a year with a broken leg.

Cant wait for the Dullards Walsh and Allardyce to piss off and we get a more progressive management team in, hopefully Marcel Brands and someone else.

Just so beaten down by the whole Allardyce regime.

WOW, simply amazing.

the best we have played for a long time, (beyond this season) we didnt play anti football.!!!

fans where amazing... i guess due to Colemans return?  but thats 2 matches in a row where the atmosphere has been electrifying (for different reasons)
Aslong as we continue to play football like this, i dont mind Allardyce.. its just when we revert to long ball and passing backwards, it depresses the fuck outa..

Shout out to Schneiderlin for coming on and passing forwards!

after the match, Theo and Seamus got so much love.. made me melt inside :D

surely we can do Arsenal too! :D coyb!
