Premier League Match #25

Stoke City's last 5 matches

Stoke City 0-0 Arsenal
Leicester City 3-0 Stoke City
Liverpool 0-1 (6-5 Pens) Stoke City - Capital One Cup (Arnautovic)
Crystal Palace 1-0 Stoke City - FA Cup
Manchester United 3-0 Stoke City

Everton's last 5 matches

Manchester City 0-0 Everton
Chelsea 3-3 Everton (O.G, Mirallas, Funes Mori)
Manchester City 3-1 Everton - Capital One Cup (Barkley)
Carlisle United 0-3 Everton (Kone, Lennon, Barkley)
Everton 3-0 Newcastle United (Lennon, Barkley Pen x2)

Stoke City

Stoke come into this match in a really poor vein of form having lost four of their last five fixtures in all competitions and even managing to lose their Capital One Cup tie against Liverpool despite winning the match. Their last match resulted in a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford with a team more akin to that of the Tony Pulis days, led by Jon Walters and Peter Crouch. That was the 10th occasion that Stoke have conceded the first goal in a Premier League match this season and they've only managed to salvage one point when conceding the first goal, losing nine of those matches. Stoke have failed to score in any of their last three league matches and they haven't gone four league matches without scoring since March 1985. Although, Stoke have only lost two of their last nine Premier League fixtures at home and they have beaten Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United during that sequence whilst their losses came against Watford and Crystal Palace. Should he feature, Peter Crouch will become the 25th different Englishman to reach 400 Premier League appearances.

Despite all the plaudits that Stoke have received for changing their identity with players like Bojan, Shaqiri and Afellay, they're not doing any better than at this stage last season as far as the stats are concerned. The Potters have exactly the same amount of points as they did at this stage last season whilst they've scored fewer goals and narrowly conceded fewer goals. They're still averaging 50% possession per game whilst their creating fewer chances, the 6th lowest in the Premier League. Their shot accuracy has improved markedly but it's still the lowest in the Premier League alongside Aston Villa this season and they're winning a fewer percentage of tackles. Mark Hughes is undoubtedly, still a massive cunt.

Possible Line-Ups

Everton

Everton ended a run of five matches without a win (D3 L2) in the premier league in midweek with a 3-0 win over Newcastle at Goodison Park but it still means that Everton's only league victories since September have come against sides in the bottom three places of the table. Southampton are the only side currently in the top half of the table that Everton have beaten this season in 12 matches (D6 L5) and that came in their second match of the season. Everton have only lost one match away from home this season which is the joint best in the Premier League alongside Tottenham and Leicester but they've also only won three times on the road and drawn a league-high of seven matches. Ross Barkley scored his seventh and eight Premier League goal this season with a couple of penalties against Newcastle which equals his total from the previous two seasons combined whilst Riyad Mahrez (23) and Mesut Ozil (19) are the only midfielders who have been central to more goals than Barkley (15) this season.

It'll probably come as no surprise to any Everton fan that Shaqiri's only two Premier League goals came in that one match at Goodison Park this season. A match which also saw a goal from Gerard Deulofeu who has scored in both of his appearances against the Potters for Everton. Speaking of the first fixture, Ross Barkley is the Englishman with the most assists (7) this season but his last assist came in the match in December which saw the third of four matches between the sides to feature a match deciding penalty. Deulofeu trumps the Swiss in the majority of the statistics, most notably in terms of assists and dribbling whilst they've both scored the same amount of goals despite just eight shots coming from the Spaniard this season compared to 27 from Shaqiri. The Stoke winger does boast a significantly higher pass completion rate (85%) than Deulofeu (74%) whilst he wins more freekicks (1.24 Per90) than the Spaniard (0.86 Per90) as well, but he's given 15 free-kicks away this season too whilst Deulofeu has conceded 13 fewer.

Again, bracing myself for the worst. These are the new Villa for me -- even if we outplay them they'll find a way to nick a result. Let's play back their goals from previous matchup:

Goal 1: Poor defending, reasonably simple finish for Shaqiri. They deserved this one.
Goal 2: Not great to allow the space, but either (1) a world-class finish, or (2) a mishit cross that flew into the net*.
Goal 3: We didn't deal well with the ball in but it was a really difficult finish from that angle.
Goal 4: Not. A. Fucking. Penalty. If I had my way, this goal would be marked: (Clattenburg, 90+1)**

That's three fortunate goals. We weren't great defensively (obviously) but Stoke were exceedingly lucky. I'd also like to mention that Bojan dived badly for their winner at Goodison last year. Fuck these mutants.

<Prepares self for similar frustrations tomorrow>

* Charlie Adam says mishit cross but I'll be damned if I'm going to take that cunt at his word.
** Actually, (Twattenburg, 90+1) if I really had my way because it highlights his extreme twat-ness. How long did he wait to point to the spot? Did I mention that Clattenburg is a twat? The fact that this guy is considered one of the top refs in the English game makes me ill.

I would have dealt with it had he signed here but it sure does rankle in a Stoke kit.

I hadn't seen the other thread saying he and Mirallas may both be fit to play a part.

I'd like to see Lennon given an extended run, I really think he brings a lot to our performance, defensively as much as anything. Although he's pitched in with a few goals too, despite never really being prolific for Tottenham. That said, I also want to see Deulofeu, Mirallas, Pienaar and Niasse playing. I'd definitely start Deulofeu for this one though, the couple of games he's had against Stoke have been really good.

Why don't you rate him one bit? He is no world beater, but he has played well for Everton. In 21 starts and 8 sub appearances, he has a respectable 5 goals and an assist, and has further drawn 2 penalties. Further, he provides good cover defensively and is better at keeping possession than either Mirallas or Deulofeu.

Reckon del was being saved for this game. But it's very harsh to drop Lennon and cleverley. Both those players gives us so much balance when they play.

Think you've gotta get del in there though.

I'd put him in for McCarthy and get cleverley in the middle.

Also be interesting to see what he does at left back. No news of a knock for baines, so he was obviously rested. But its also harsh to drop oveido who I think has performed well recently.

I'd like to see Del get a run through the center too. Maybe give Ross a break. But then he's in great form too.

Title: Re: Stoke City v Everton
Post by: ally2 on February 06, 2016, 06:07:04 PM
Yes Lennon is better defensively. That's why I think he probably ought to start today. The Newcastle team showed me that Martinez wants to prioritise a sound defence which is good. Unfortunately though, Newcastle offer no barometer of that achievement.

But we all admire Barkley in attack whilst accepting his lesser contributions in defence. I'm fine with that - we watch a player develop. And then everyone says Lennon is great as he offers more defensively. Why isn't Deleufeu offered that time to develop that side of the game then?  I have always thought Deulefeu is brilliant. He may need a rest and his fitness should be better granted. But it confuses though that so many rate Lennon after a career of mediocrity yet it only takes one poor game from Deulefeu for people to start shouting at him at the game, groaning, and complaining that he'd be better off from the bench and all that crap.

I think Deulofeu could do a lot more centrally . Yes he can be annoying stuck on the left when no one spreads it out wide . He has to come back to pick it up and has too much to do a lot of the time . He would be ideal in the Osman role and Lennon offers more defensively .

People shouldn't be expecting Ross Barkley of del types of performances from him, he's a different type of player.

He's very intricate, and I can see that increasing in his game as his pace dwindles with age.

I think you said it in the Newcastle match thread, he's our new Pienaar. Cleverly is our new Osman.

I'm expecting Deulofeu to start this one, might want more creativity to open up a side like Stoke.  And asking Lennon to start again (3rd match in 7 days, having played full 90 in previous two) is asking an awful lot.  Especially for a player who runs as far and as hard as he does.

I think if the ball was under control it would have been a red.

If the keeper didn't touch him there I don't think he was getting to the ball

Oviedo is one of the best backup LBs in the league, but Baines is still the better player. Let us not start doubting Baines so quickly yet again. It happens every time anyone else plays well and it is sort of crazy, since Baines is one of the best all time attacking backs ever.

Oviedo has a bit of that Besic "I don't care who you are" aggression in him, which does give us a lift at times.  Again, I think at Baines' age, expecting him to be able to play every single week in the League, Cups, and HOPEFULLY Europe next season isn't realistic in any event.

No doubt Baines is the better player. I'm not disputing that, it's more about the sum of the parts in this case.

Maybe it's more of a thing whereby against certain teams or if we're playing a certain setup we should be willing to give players like Oviedo a chance. Baines doesn't have to play every game...albeit I admit I usually prefer not to change a working back four.

It's a little like the Deulofeu vs Lennon situation.

Post by: Evertonian in NC on February 06, 2016, 09:23:32 PM
Even if I did prefer Oviedo to Baines (I don't), I also don't think his body could hold up to full-time duty either.  He's an energy player, best deployed as a versatile reserve and given a run of matches here and there.

AGREED 100%.  We absolutely need to be proactive with our rotation, especially at positions where we are deep.  Matchups really do matter, and it's best not to wait for fatigue and injuries to actually flare up.  Baines is a treasure, treat him with care.

I think Barry's thing was another like Rom's back -- he got hit in the wrong place and the pain shot down his arm, just as the pain was probably shooting down Rom's leg on Wednesday.

If you've ever had back pain before you know that the worst of it isn't felt in the back -- it's the pain that shoots down your sciatic nerve that kills.

Still, though.  Better late than never.  We can't do anything about the games already in the books.  Not convinced that the Hammers or Manure won't slide and open up 6th as a possibility if we really get our shit together.

Plus, we can get the Anfield monkey off our backs.  Still so much to play for this season.

The weather is a HUGE factor in our passing game, and we've adjusted to that and looked more to counter.  The result is a 3-nil lead.

I'd like to see Martinez shore it up for the opening 20 mins of the second half and make stoke sweat and take chances to try and get back into it. Then throw Deulofeu and Niasse on to really put it to them.

Also, and this is extremely important, Lukaku should not be pleased with just a goal - he needs the attitude of looking for a hat trick, desire or thirst or whatever you want to call it he should be looking to net three, then feel satisfied. Imagine getting Vardy's workrate and harrassing of defenders out of Lukaku. We'd have the leagues top scorer.

So far as stoke go, they arent even half the side when Shawcross is missing, hes their leader and talisman that pulls them together.

Lets see the clean sheet protected and wait stoke out and see if we can force a few more mistakes or some sweet pacey counter attack stuff.

The defensive shape in that half was much better, even when we were down to 10 men, but some of that could be to do with Stoke's completely lack of movement up top.

We have hard work on both flanks now with Lennon and Clev tracking back, makes us look a lot more solid. Maybe not as much flair up top but this is four clean sheets on the bounce now and plenty of goals too. Hope he doesn't change things for the sake of it.

GOAL - Liverpool 2-2 Sunderland
Jermain Defoe

Sunderland level! In a half-full Anfield, the Black Cats have snatched what looks likely to be a valuable point. Jermain Defoe (who else) has bagged it. He has barely had a sniff, but such is his quality that when a chance comes his way he takes it. The ball is fed low to him in the box and he has a Mamadou Sakho as a marker but he turns like a flash and hammers in a low shot. You have to wonder; just what impact did the departing home fans have on their side? Since the supporters left they have thrown away a 2-0 lead.

:snigger:

Superb away performance today. Almost akin to the one against Wolfsburg last season.

We look so much more comfortable with that back five, who all know when is the right time to play it out from the back and when to get it forward out of harm's way. Which isn't a slight on Stones by any means, but it's certainly paved the way for the last three clean sheets.

Lennon is undroppable at the moment. Fair play to him for biding his time before taking his game up a notch since coming back into the side. His anticipation at times was amazing today, and was summed up by his goal perfectly.

Tough home match next week against a side that will stick to their 18 yard line and frustrate us, so hopefully the past few wins have given the squad a major confidence boost and they can carry on this form going into the FA Cup tie with Bournemouth.

Lennon and Cleverley's work rate means we look a lot better defensively. The fact they both offer consistency and swiftness of moving the ball going forwards too means it just works. They might not have the talent of Del and Mirallas but it's a team game as they say.

Sadly, respective Lukaku and Oviedo threads seem to have been auto closed due to inactrion (?)

So for now it'll have to do here.

Lukaku - I want to see this player get a mentality of 'only a hat trick every game' is good enough. Actually delivering on that is a stretch but wanting it and playing in that manner are very much accomplishable. Some games a clear cut chance might not present itself, but if thats on the cards I'm darned sure hes involved in the build up and assist areas. I'm not expecting 114 goals a season (38 games x hat tricks a time) but I'd like to see him a bit pissed off for not bagging more than his fair share, especially in this side which is so resolutely built to furnish him with opportunities.

Oviedo - Has stepped into the breach left and right back in the past 3+ games, and what an impact and what a top guy this chap is, it is incredibly important for sides to have adaptable players and that he excels both sides means hes worth his weight in gold to us. great attitude, no moaning, and 95 minutes plus every game. What a guy. Dependable cover and reliable legs to throw on to ease pressure and see games out, would like him on a few more free kicks because has shown he can beat the first man more often than not.
