The first time the clubs ever competed against each other came at the end of the 19th century. On 23rd December 1899, Everton hosted Manchester City in a 2-1 victory at Goodison Park. The goalscorers were Robert Gray who scored his only ever Everton goal in the match and Jimmy Settle who scored 97 goals in 8 seasons for Everton. On the score-sheet for the visitors was one of football's early superstars Billy Meredith, the Welshman netted 129 times in 339 appearances for City before moving to Manchester United

Manchester City first win at Everton came at their first home, at Hyde Park. Joe Cassidy scored the only goal as City ran out 1-0 winners on 13th October 1900 in his only season for the club. Their first victory at Goodison Park came 6 years later in a 3-0 win on 16th April 1906 as Irvine Thornley scored a brace for the visitors while Sandy Turnbull scored as well in his only season before, like Meredith moving to Manchester United.

The most goals in this fixture came the season after on 3rd September 1906 when Everton thrashed Manchester City 9-1 at Goodison Park. The already mentioned Jimmy Settle managed to bag 2 goals but he was out-shined by Alex 'Sandy' Young who scored 4 on the day. Jack Taylor, Walter Abbott and Hugh Bolton scored the rest of the goals.Albert Fisher bagged the consolation goal for City, his second in just 5 appearance for the Manchester side.

The most goals between the sides in the premier league at Goodison Park is 4 goals which has happened on 3 occasions spread out equally as 1 win for either side and a draw. The latest coming in a 2-2 draw on New Years day 2003. Steve Watson's opening goal was cancelled out as Nicolas Anelka took advantage of a Richard Wright mistake. Marc Vivien Foe then put the visitors ahead with 8 minutes to go before Tomasz Radzinski headed past Peter Schmeichel in stoppage time to grab a point.

Everton won the last meeting between the sides at Goodison Park as Darron Gibson scored his first and to this date only goal of his Everton career on 31st January 2012 with a deflected shot on the edge of the box which left Joe Hart helpless tp send Everton to a 1-0 win. Manchester City's last win at Goodison Park came on 25th April 2009, Manchester City's first big signing Robinho opened the scoring before Stephen Ireland made it 2-0. Dan Gosling scored a late consolation in a 2-1 win for the away side.

The reverse fixture this season saw Fellaini heavily involved on 1st December 2012. After rebounding in his headed effort on goal, Fellaini then went on to conceded a penalty on the stroke of half time. Tevez converted the penalty as City struggled to break down Everton in the second half as the game finished 1-1.

Below is the spending of the two clubs since Thaksin Shinawatra became the new owner of Manchester City.

Following transfer fees unreleased:

Louis Saha to Everton 08/09
Carlo Nash to Everton 08/09
Cody Arnoux to Everton 09/10
Joao Silva to Everton 10/11
Bryan Oviedo to Everton 12/13

Glauber to Manchester City 07/08
Adam Johnson to Manchester City 09/10

John Ruddy to Norwich from Everton 10/11
Lukas Jutkiewicz to Coventry from Everton 10/11

RolandoBianchi to Torino from Manchester City 08/09
Andreas Isaksson to PSV from Manchester City 08/09
Kaspar Schmeichel to Notts County from Manchester City 09/10

As you can see, Manchester City have invested £432.05m more than Everton since being taken over. A clear indication of the gulf in finances between the two sides.

You can only hope that City have the same complacency that we suffered from yesterday when they turn up for this one.

Can't see a win, but 1 all draw looks on the cards me thinks.

Can't say I've been less enthused about a game for a while.

Well, probably since the Utd away game last season.

The difference then was that we were generally playing well, had some new players who'd brought enthusiasm to the whole club and we were away from home where there's always less pressure.

I'm worried that a silent/angry home crowd faced with a relaxed City side isn't going to make pretty viewing.

We weren't complacent yesterday.

The catalogue of examples of performances like that in key games suggests completely the opposite.

no I am an angry 50 plus and have witnessed all kinds of shite over the years , and I mean shite, but when I see a cluless manager trying to motivate players who clearly did not want to know or be bothered in some cases, then to take off mirrales just finished it for me

Last thing we need is a home game!

Anyway....

Mucha
Coleman heitinga distin baines
Fellaini Gibson
Mirallas Osman pienaar
Anichebe

Subs: GK Duffy Oveido Neville hitz Barkley jelavic

I would be soooo tempted to start Barkley in the No.10 role but I think against city, against our crowd which are gonna be very hostile... May be better from the bench when city are a couple up!

I'd respect Moyes a lot more if he dropped 4 or 5 of the players from the Wigan game. However I know we are in no position to do that so i fully expect to see the same team as the Wigan game probably minus Neville.

What the heck does Oviedo have to do to warrant a start,Bainsey/Pienaar have looked goosed for 6/8 weeks now,in fact I would summise Baines has been playing with an injury, just give him a go and freshen it up ginger bollox!!!

My team:

                      Mucha
Stones         Duffy   Distin               Baines
Coleman           Gibson      Barkley   Oviedo
                     Mirallas

Why would you cut up your season ticket :O I would of have it!!!

Like to see Barkley start, just to see how he does, can't be worse than osman/Neville depending g what position he plays. Give him some time and see if he is progressing.
Hope Anichebe starts, I think I would stuck with jelevic as he works hard, dropping him won't do confidence any good.
Mirallas needs another good game if running. I love him

I'm not even joking with this team by the way.

We have nothing to play for now so lets fucking use some younger players to see if they can be used next season. I guessing Miralles is out and for me their is no point Playing felli now. He's defo off in the summer so why not play other players that are here long term.

The four younger players in that team have been fantastic for the u21's of late and all season.

I don't care thats its against City.. These players are fresh and hungry

It'd make for an interesting game, that's for sure.

In general I am in favour of rewarding good work in the reserves. I'd be hard pressed to imagine Duffy, Barkley and McAleny doing a whole lot worse than who they'd be replacing.

Never going to happen though. :)

It's a shame we can't play Reading at home every week. IF we can find some form, keep playing in the league as we did against Reading then I think that 2 would look less like the 20 it does now. Players and fans' confidence is in the toilet and it's going to be heck of an effort to get it back before the end of the season in time for it to count and allow a push for Europe.

This is a game that we need something out of realistically, the clubs in meltdown at the minute and we need something.

Therefor i fully expect moyes to go with a formation of 8-1-1

I think your analysis is entirely wide of the mark.

I am expecting a tactical battle and your formation is far too attacking.

I expect 1-10-0 where the goalkeeper is the '1'.

However, if Howard is fit and we draft in our 3rd choice keeper then it could be 3-8-0.

To be honest I am starting to become apathetic about the season. The way Arsenal and L'pool have been playing added to the poor performances we have been having, I am starting to lose the faith for 5th. Last weekend really took the wind out of my sails. Hope Saturday will have a good atmosphere though.

It's fucking shit we have seemingly no routine for corners.  We do the whole one hand up for near post, two hands for far post or what ever it symbolises but the ball is always the same and we have no proper play for corners.

Superb first half, they are really open down the flanks. Think its fairly likely that they will change things quite a bit, so second half could be a totally different kettle of fish, but we look dominant.

Felt the ref seemed to change tack after the chorus of referee's a wanker. Started giving us nothing and City most things, then seemed eager to give us free kicks and them bookings. Wouldn't be surprised if Mancini was waiting at the side of the pitch to serenade him with a little song.

Harsh bookings for some of our players, and none for them.
Moyes' dumb substitutions leaving no creativity on the pitch.
And clear favoritism by the ref.

Wish we could get so up for every game like that, always raise it against citeh.

Great performances across the park, much improved attitude.

Shame Fellaini and Pienaar will be missing for the next match though.

Clean sheet! Mucha made some quite extraordinary blocks today. Head and shoulders above Joe Hart. (Mwahahaha).

Back above RS and arsenal.

Going to be interesting sorting the PL out this afternoon.

Fantastic performance. Coleman utterly outstanding and definitely MOTM, but Osman, Anichebe and Mucha all superb and on another day could have taken that award themselves.

Probert has an absolute 'mare but we were unbelievably lucky not to get that penalty given against us. I guess if he had not sent Pienaar off he may have given it, but who cares! Superb today and a much needed confidence boost.

So very relieved we hung on after that disastrous sending off.

I've never minded Probert, but today he was the worst man on the pitch.
Even worse than Dzeko, and some other city clowns.

Makes last week even more of a disappointment, because as we have shown against Man Utd and Man City, we can beat any team in the land when we are up for it.

Thought Victor was a monster today, Mucha was great but Coleman has just come on leaps and bounds. His runs forward are productive, and that defensive header at the back post was just class.

To get away from the pen was lucky, but we could easily have had one for the arm holding Felliani back in the first half

Great atmosphere at the game today. Was worried leading up to this that some fans would boo us onto the pitch!

Great stuff from Mucha, Heitinga, Coleman, Anichebe and Gibson, though everyone really played well.

One of the great things today was how the players reacted to the fans and let them know that they needed our help to see the game through.

Total party atmosphere when that Jelavic goal went in

Only real negative aside from the Pienaar sending off was Steven Naismith taking the worst corner of all time

Quote
Everton boss David Moyes reflecting on his side's 2-0 win over Manchester City and the response to last week's FA Cup defeat by Wigan: "We have been good for the majority of season. We have had one or two dips but that was more like us today. I thought we had a bad performance last week, which the fans rightly reminded us about, but we just reminded them they are supporting a really good team.

"I thought we played really well in the first half. We were playing the champions so we knew it was going to be tough. When we had to be resilient we were and when we had to play well, we did. We scored a goal which was wrongly disallowed. I'm really pleased with how the players performed."

We passed the ball well, apart from Naismith when he came on.  Pressed them high for the first half, start of the second we seemed to drop off a bit but couldn't really tell if that was the game plan because Pienaar got sent off soonish into the second half.  Fellaini played well didn't do anything spectacular but his work rate was through the roof and they shit themselves.  Anichebe was a machine as well. amazed he lasted 90 minutes great work rate and ball retention.  Coleman was insane the best I've ever seen him play.  Osman played superb as well.  And Jan Mucha was great once again, some brilliant saves and making me wonder why he hasn't started more, has very good command of his area and he plays football, makes me all warm inside!

That was us at our absolute best today with not only the team spirit and excellent work rate but also the real quality and attacking intent as well.

Coleman was outstanding and it was brilliant to see the improvement in both the attacking and defending parts of his game.  Going forward he consistently made the right decisions and delivered quality balls, and at the back he was positionally excellent and made some great tackles, blocks and of course the brilliant header away from that cross.

Victor was also superb, his work rate was unbelievable and it's great to see him exuding positivity in his body language and his approach to the game.

Mucha also had a fantastic game and that will fill him with confidence which is great for both him and the team in general

Overall though just a great team performance but it's now vital that they use it as a turning point and maintain it until the end of the season. 5th place is well within our grasp IF we play to our potential.

My mum hardly ever swears, but when they showed Kenwright on the telly, she said "Good god what an absolute cunt that man is".

The stupid prick will probably come out on SSN saying how awesome that game was and how much of a blue he is. The prick is holding us back.

It was the comedian Lee Nelson playing his caracter Jason Bent, most probably for a new tv series. Boss that he seemingly didn't arrange the prank with either club just decided to go for it!

Good to see Operation Goodison Exercise clamped down on it!
