Title: West Brom vs Everton
Post by: Bluedylan on August 18, 2016, 05:05:17 AM
In the absence of Shogs' infinitely sexier match threads that contain actual graphics and are well written and researched (which he assures me will return in time, once his lappie is sorted out), might as well get the match thread going for this one.

Nice to have another Saturday 3pm game. The opponents got off to a good start with a 1-0 win at Palace, and they will see it as a chance to get 6pts on the board, while we're still finding our feet under the new manager. Rondon looked a bit of a handful on the brief highlights I saw, and they went with 2 up top. Having said that, they have got some first team players that the lids might accurately describe as 'pyar shite'.

Difficult to predict our starting line-up and formation. Do we stick with 3 at the back or do we go to a more conventional 4-3-3 (or the dreaded 4-2-3-1)?

So if it's a 3-5-2, maybe this:

                  Stekelenburg
            Jags   Williams  Mori
McCarthy                             Baines
             Gana  Barry  Barkley

              Del/Bolasie
                                Lukaku

And if it's a 4-3-3, maybe this:

                Stekelenburg
Holgate   Jags   Williams    Baines
                    Barry
             Gana     Barkley
Deulofeu                        Bolasie/Kev
                   Lukaku

If I had to guess, I'd say it was more likely that we'll stick with the 3-5-2 for now, because it worked well, because we're away from home and because we'll have additional pace in the side with Big Rom and Bolasie.

As for West Brom and Pulis, well let's not dress it up - they're boring as fuck and fairly shite, but occasionally effective, aren't they?

This is how they lined up last week:

                        Foster
Dawson  McCauley  Olsson    Evans

Phillips    Fletcher    Yacob    Gardner

               Rondon   Berahino

What do we reckon then lads and lasses? Be lovely to get our first win on the board. Be nice to have Big Rom back, assuming he's fit, and hopefully get a look at Williams and Bolasie.

Looking forward to this. Feel really optimistic.

Also I always prefer playing West Brom at their place than at ours.

Don't reckon Bolasie will start the game but Williams will.

Formation is a tricky one. Koeman sets up depending on the opponent so who knows.

Reckon we will win. Wont be easy as West Brom never is but we will scrape it.

Dunno about everyone else, but that 3-5-2 looks sexy as fuck to me.  Especially if we do it RIGHT, tell Bolasie and Deulofeu they each have a half, so go balls to the wall for 45 and leave nothing in reserve.

I think Koeman likes Mirallas. With Lukaku back, and Koeman seeing Deulofeu as a striker, I can see him going with Kev over Gerry on the right, while starting Bolasie on the left.

What a bunch of fucking cloggers they are. Organised, but very average. Even at this early stage of Koeman's tenure, I'd expect us to beat these lot. Think Ron will learn a lot about his team and certain individuals on Saturday.

Always a tough game against them away. Would expect to see Williams in for Holgate.

Can't see Bolasie starting, would imagine there'd be just the one change from the Spurs game.

If we get out of the blocks the way we did against Spurs and can maintain it for more than 60 mins then we should pick up a win.

Strange. I was going to writ some sarcastic comment about us not giving WBA any advantages from start as your 4-3-3 formation didn't include more than ten players. So I press quote and up pops Barry in the formation...
But an invisible player would be great! Hope Barry get to keep that role!

Anichibe gets a mention above. It reminds me that,OK we fucked up badly on Niasse, but just think we got 8m for Victor, 8m for Naismith, 12M? for Rodwell, probably one or more I  forget amongst the players we sold on who never really made it later. It puts Niasse into perspective, swings and roundabouts and all that.

I know it's only West Brom and we've had a number of wins at their place in recent years but I'll feel a lot more optimistic about things if we can come away from this with a comfortable win.

We have a fairly kind run of fixtures coming up and the point against Spurs was more than decent but if we struggle here then I can't help but think we've got a few frustrating weeks to come.

Excluding the three without squad numbers, we've got 15 players who won't count as homegrown, and another 7 who are over 21 and would take up one of the homegrown slots.  That leaves 3 spaces a max of which 2 can be non-homegrown eligible.  If we wanted to bring in more than 3 players then someone else would have to be left out.

Last season both Martinez and Koeman played 4-2-3-1 against West Brom, however Pulis set up differently.
Against us he played 4-3-3, took the lead, was winning 1-0 at half time, but lost 2-3. (Monday night game).
Against Southampton he played a 4-4-2 formation which resulted in a scoreless draw.
Think this could be a similar dour affair, unless someone makes a clanger. Let's hope we have put those days behind us.

Bench is strong as fuck though. We play as well as we did first half last week, and we'll have these. And then we've still got great options to change things, or if the players are fucked after an hour.

Get Williams in FFS. How long a holiday does he need?

Should be enough to win anyway.

Can only see a frustrating day with that formation.

Even though Rom is obviously not fit to start, I'd rather we'd gone 4-3-3 even if it meant Kone up front.

Seems a very cautious approach to take against West Brom of all teams.

Still, we have game changers on the bench to hopefully get the win.

Post by: Shogun on August 20, 2016, 08:07:16 PM
We saw against Tottenham that the 5-3-2 formation works because it can exploit the space in behind the full backs.

The problem is West Brom full backs don't leave any space.

Wait and see and hope we win 4-0 but I'm not optimistic at the moment.
Title: Re: West Brom vs Everton
Post by: hill135 on August 20, 2016, 08:07:24 PM
3-4-3 is fine for this in my opinion.

three central defenders against a front two. four against four in midfield and ours is better man-for-man. And three front players against their back four. The weakness in theory is against two-on-ones on the flanks but for some reason Pulis loves to play four centre backs so we shouldn't need to worry.

Hardly surprising given we played well against Spurs, Williams hasn't done a pre season and Bolasie is just through the door.

Be a though game this.

I think Ronald is smart and loyal and it is no surprise to see Mason in the team as he loves him and rightly so .If he is the future for us then bring it on .
Why should he change the team for the sake of it ,let everyone deserve the place nothing to do with what we paid or how much their value is ,put that shirt on and be proud !
I hope it is true that Rom is staying but no automatic places here it is good for the team spirit
Onwards and upwards Blues

Bad judgement by Koeman playing frontmen Mirallas and Gerry  together or has he no choice? He has a blt of homework to do if he thinks this line up will keep us out of the bottom half. Early days yet but we are in dire need of an injection of decent players. Good news about Lukaku staying except apparently he is not fit enough to play.

Since he went out wide Mirallas has been our best player.

Constantly look for the ball, and instead of playing the safe ball, he's always looking for that drilled ball into Lukaku.

Koeman made a mistake starting with 3-5-2 but realised that quickly and made the change.

Think we'll go on to win this tbh. Mirallas and del are looking very dangerous.

We also made it piss easy for them by playing a frightened dodo at right back. Holgate did more in 35 seconds to open West Brom up (and thus make them wary of the danger, forcing them to stretch wider) than McCarthy did in 35 minutes.

Must be hard for WBA fans having a manager that harbors no ambition to finish any higher than 14th.

Not really, it's still preferable to the yoyoing they did for at least ten seasons.

Have to agree with Ram. Sell McCarthy and get what you can for him. Someone like Moyes'll pay 15m for him. I know he's out of postion, but he's a coward with the ball at his feet, in any position.

Good time to score now, Rom will make more a difference as will Bolasie second half.

I like how Koeman saw he had gotten it wrong with the team selection and changed it.

They are just a cunt to play against though aren't they.
Got it wrong I don't know but there were three players in the first half done fuck all -but one scored -and two more playing like they know they are leaving .I think if they give Rom a new conract it should stipulate no talking to the Belgian press and keep your father out of it

What about Berahino?

Every time we play Pulis I think this will finally be the time we twat them, every time i'm disappointed and met with 2 ranks of 5 players.

He's the type of fella that would kick a kid off a bike for having fun while he's around.
Title: Re: West Brom vs Everton
Post by: blue1948 on August 20, 2016, 09:58:14 PM
Since he went out wide Mirallas has been our best player.

Constantly look for the ball, and instead of playing the safe ball, he's always looking for that drilled ball into Lukaku.

Koeman made a mistake starting with 3-5-2 but realised that quickly and made the change.

Think we'll go on to win this tbh. Mirallas and del are looking very dangerous.

Sorry but no.

Del looks like a player who has never played in the middle of the park before. Though we may see glimpses, he's got a lot to learn before he can do it effectively for 90 minutes.

With Lukaku on, Del has moved to the right where he's been immediately more effective.

Saw loads to be positive about. Very happy.

Stekelenberg with a couple of important saves when needed
Holgate MOM
FuMo looking better than he has done for a bit
Jags great
& that's just the defence!

Bolasie looks very 'un-Everton-like' as a player if that makes sense to anyone? But is going to be exciting to watch.

Mirallas getting a new lease of life.

My one negative from today (apart from Baines' mixed-game) is that we don't seem to be competing for headers in midfield. We bottle out of most and even some tackles too. I really hope that changes soon because when we're battling against better opposition than WBA we'll need to compete.

Still happy though and expecting another new face or 3 in the next 11 days!

Koeman & Pulis both put gameplans into action today and the difference was that as the game progressed, Koeman was able to change it and ask questions Pulis had no answer for. On the flip-side, when Pulis tried to change the script - Koeman had it handled.

Just such a relief and a confidence boost for everyone at the club to get that first win, no matter if it was scrappy or not. We've got a few more favourable fixtures still coming up, some more new players to come in and it's fucking great to feel good about the team and the club again.

Can you translate that for an old man
?

Awful miss in a situation when we should've buried the opponent. He didn't and the pressure was on in our end. What he's been (or his old man) suggesting is that he is a world class striker. A world class striker buries those chances 100%.

He is not as good as he says he is.

Williams will hopefully add some real stability to the back. I still like Mori, I think he will grow into a good defender for us but he's got a brain fart in him for sure. It's nice to see us come from behind and end up the better side. There were a few jitters but we really could have had three or four today.

I think it's most encouraging that this is far from our settled side. We have players to come in from injury, players to be signed and a possible formation change as well. I know people won't like the reference but it's reminds of when Moyes first came and shook things up a bit while he found a side.

Imperative we get another striker and a no 10 before the window shuts to put pressure on these two.  Don't know how Barkley played in the 1st half, but didn't see an awful lot from him other than the miss and the ball thru to to Bolasie for Lukaku's miss.

Ross was trying to win the ball sitting on his arse on numerous occasions. Ronalds told him he's not special; but he could be. But only if he get's rid of Roberto's drivel.

Yeah I thought Ross was ok actually. Nothing special though. I do like how he is happy to draw fouls. That's really important. He is quite slow to get the ball in a position to shoot though, presumably because he doesn't decide in advance of receiving the ball that he fancies a shot. His part in the first goal was very good but he still shirks a header in midfield.

Maybe it's the lager talking here and I'll deserve the flak but:

Considering he's been touted as a world beater...

He can become one of the dominating midfielders of the era. So far we've seen, well, an over-hyped kid with no real progress on the pitch. It's starting to be do-or-die for him also.

But he certainly is our best option for that position. And he's scored 1 in 2 (unlucky not to be 2), aswell as holding the ball up 50x better than lukaku today.

Pretty much what you want from your number 10

The thing is: Lukaku just showed us again why he's not going anywhere, at least for now. A striker of his standards (or what he believes he is) is nailing those in 100/100.

That is not true. He did not even do much wrong -- he made solid contact and tried to put it where the keeper was not. I actually think he had a solid game  in general and there is little question that his intro changed it in our favor.

Everton fans give Lukaku so little support. It is amazing he wants to stay here.

He had a solid game. Last season, he hit 10 and 10 for goals and assists, which is a great return from any ACM, on any team, in any league. Yeah, he is not perfect, but he is still a very good player. And with his new and improved physique and work rate, he is no longer the liability he was at times last season.

So are a few on here ! Just doubts at this point in time but we need to see something soon.

What exactly do we need to see? And for how long? And most importantly, why?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Barkley is beyond criticism, but I do feel people are trying to set up a catch-22 situation for him, for no discernible reason.

Once a player draws so much scrutiny that every single action of his is analysed in slow motion and minute detail, small errors get magnified to titanic proportions, and confirmation bias takes care of the rest. Throw in a completely unjustified "this is a make or break season for him"* statement, and there's only one way this could end.

*Seriously, this gets bandied about for so many players but I've yet to hear a plausible explanation as to why it is. Why this season? What constitutes as "make" and what as "break"? What if he falls in between? If he "makes it", will he at last escape the extreme scrutiny next season?

P.s.: Please don't take this personally, I didn't intend to rant at you, just these "make or break" stories in general.

I'd just like to say how much of a refreshing change that was today.  I had that horrible sinking feeling after the first half an hour that I was going to have to endure another hour of us getting outplayed and looking impotent against a poor opponent.  But then the Lukaku sub and tactical change completely turned the game in our favour, and then it was really good to watch us for the first time in a couple of years.  A few dodgy moments late on but we were mostly pretty comfortable in the 2nd half.

Holgate was very good and it was great to see him get forward a lot.  Gana was quietly effective and could be a difference maker for us in terms of our overall shape and tactics.  Lukaku looked reasonably sharp and like he was up for it.  Bolasie showed that he can be a great attacking weapon for us and really should have had 2 assists in the 30 mins he was on if it wasn't for poor finishing from team mates.

It's just nice to feel positive for the first time in quite some time.

Mccarthy was poor but he he was out of position, Mori wasn't for most of the game. I think Mccarthy will move on as he probably realises he'll struggle to get games over the others which is a shame really.. a good grafter but hasn't got better.

Thought knob ed was back in the 1st half then Rom came on... much better second half against a team aimed at defending first and foremost... thought Mori was very dodgy and can't see him making it with us longer term.. Holgate was great again for his age and will only get better.. glad got a win and think Rom and Balosie will wreak havoc this season..

I believe if ever a good defender needed to learn. Funes Mori is perfectly placed to become the animal he obviously is on the pitch. It's all about passion and he's better than you lot think, He want's to win with a passion. Mori may well leave this club? Koemans going to keep Funes Mori.  Koeman knows.

Mccarthy was poor but he he was out of position, Mori wasn't for most of the game. I think Mccarthy will move on as he probably realises he'll struggle to get games over the others which is a shame really.. a good grafter but hasn't got better.
Possible swap deal including him for Kone? I agree though, he looks like he'll be the one that misses out

swap deals never happen but mccarthy looks to be on the outside looking in unless there are injuries

Shit in the first half until Ron brought Lukaku on after 30 mins or so. Got the equalizer on stroke of half time. Our keeper kept us in it, and Barry got the winner. Yala looked good, Barkley missed another sitter, and Rom should have scored too.

I agree. When people were saying how stupid Stones was being by wanting to leave when he could learn so much from Koeman - it made me think - "why can't he do it for FuMo then?"

Everything @blargins (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=54) said - PLUS - young Mason Holgate was MOTM and looked fucking awesome!
