Preview

Saturdays FA Cup tie will mark the 41st meeting between the sides. Neither team has the upper hand in terms of previous results with both having 14 wins to their name whilst the other 12 matches ended all square. The largest margin of victory came back in 1908 when Everton triumphed 6-1 in the 2nd round replay of the FA Cup. The most goals recorded in this match came in 1930, Everton coming out on top again in a 6-4 victory in the old Division 2 (2nd tier of English football).

Its been a long time since Everton's last win at Boundary Park which came on the 11/09/1993 in a 1-0 victory with Tony Cottee the goal scorer on the day coming in Oldham's last season in the premier league. The last meeting between the sides came in 2008 which was the first time the sides had faced each other in 14 years. Oldham pulled off a shock victory at Goodison Park as Gary McDonald knocked Everton out of the FA Cup at the third round with a 1-0 win.

Everton have scored 62 goals against Oldham whilst the latter have scored 58 goals against the toffees totalling to 120 goals in the 40 matches between the sides. An exact average of 3 goals a game.

Oldham

Prior to departing company with manager Paul Dickov before this weekends set of fixtures, Oldham were in shocking league form which has saw them plummet to the relegation zone in League One with their last win coming on the 8/12/12 (8 defeats and 1 draw since that victory) and even an FA Cup victory over Liverpool wouldn't prevent Dickov from resigning. Tony Philliskirk took over as Caretaker manager and inevitably Oldham earned their first league win of the new year over MK Dons on Saturday.

Former Everton player Jose Baxter currently plays for the league One outfit following his refusal to sign a new contract with Everton during the summer. The move has been a success so far with a lot of Oldham's fans citing that the youngster is the reason they're not worse off in the league. Baxter is currently top scorer for the latics with 11 goals (9 in League One) and 6 assists (4 in League One) this season.

Oldham are the 4th lowest scorers in League One and have conceded the 7th highest amount of goals.

Everton

The FA Cup may be a welcome distraction for the toffees this weekend as league form has dipped picking up 6 points out of a possible 15 in their last 5 PL matches. A leaky defence costing the blues over the past few games whilst David Moyes struggles to find a balance between defence and attack.

A trip to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon capped of an awful weekend in which close rivals Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea all picked up maximum points, whereas Everton failed to pick up anything in a 2-0 defeat to the champions elect. Despite dominating periods of the game particularly in the first half, Everton were toothless in attack and struggled to carve out any clear cut opportunities except for an Osman 20 yard shot and an effort from similar range by substitute Nikicia Jelavic in the second half. John Heitinga was put into the team as Distin fell ill in the warm up, however the Dutchman failed to prove his doubters wrong with yet another costly error.

Avoid arsenal, utd and city till the final and we could have a real good chance this year!

Why would we want to risk it. There's one thing you should never to in banana slip ties IMO and that's rapidly change the defence. It's the reason Liverpool lost to them.

Hope we play a strong team and go for it, hopefully we can introduce the likes of stones with 15 minutes to go, after we have the lead, and look in control, then a kind draw will be nice, would love us to go on and get one step further than we did in 2009!

After yesterday I think Oviedo should get a chance. He has experience and pace that can help him even in an unfamiliar spot.

The only thing I've seen of Stones so far is a clip where he makes Heitinga look like Usain Bolt, which makes me a little concerned as he might be liable for an odd mistake and won't be able to recover.

One or two changes to the starting eleven at most I reckon, and it's very likely that Moyes will be thinking the same, what with his team selections for the previous two rounds.

Oldham will obviously step their game up for this, especially with them at home, so people expecting a massive win should take note of previous upsets.

Because there are lots of things that experienced players do that go unnoticed simply because they are doing them. Being in the correct position for example that holds up an attack.

I'd consider Duffy as Heitinga is costing us goals in every game at the moment but there won't be a mad rush to not play Neville however he inhibits our attacks.

Yeah he's past it now.

But he's not doing ridiculous things week in week out.

He's still solid generally and, as I said, will do things that we don't notice that young players might not necessarily do.

It's not as though there were a constant stream of attacks pouring past Neville.

Yes he gets beaten most of the time if he's exposed (using the yellow card sweep tackle) but considering how slow he is, he avoids that situation quite well.

If Distin isn't fit, I think Duffy would be a good option. He is stronger in the air than Heitinga too which is probably going to be a factor in this game.

Give Stones and Duffy starts, other than that, full strength.
Less likely to see Coleman return for this game so I would be more inclined to give Stones a debut.
Duffy hasn't featured at all this season, would be good to see him play again as he's not going to start a league game unless two of our CB's are injured.

Osman might need a rest.
Jelavic needs a start, hopefully will score one or two.

If we are leading and comfortable near the end of the game put some young blood on like Velios, maybe give Kennedy the chance also.
(Junior is injured I think from the U-21's game.)

Full strength team from the off. Would start with jelavic tho. Hopefully get a few goals up early and kill the tie off before it starts.

Second half give baines a rest - bringing Oveido on.
Bring the returning Barkley on - to give osman a breather.
And maybe give Duffy a run out from the bench too.

Then pray for a kind home draw in the next round.

He is saying Osman Piennar and Baines need a rest and are tired? Firstly, why play them against Cheltenham?

                                                 Howard
              Stones             Duffy                 Distin            Oviedo

                                      Fellaini            Gibson

             Naismith                       Barkley                Miralles

                                               Victor

That is not a team to get out muscled and the three above can get a rest.

yep score was 0-1 we were awful

We were worse than awful - they were fucking awful.

All the omens looked good for that match, I got an email offering cheap tickets, it was on my birthday against lower-league opponents, my missus agreed to come to her first ever footy match (she hates football) to see what the fuss was about.
Looked a nailed on win, good bouncy cup-tie atmosphere with lots of goals to cheer and jump around at.

Then the whistle blew.

The WORST game of football I have ever seen. One shot all game. Theirs. Goal. The missus was freezing and complaining the whole time even though she had my coat on so I was worse.

The only saving grace was a few pints and some pretty decent scouse in the Pumphouse before we came home.

Let's batter them today lads - I want REVENGE!

We will go full strength.

We have a week off before the game and a week off after the game. We should go out to win this game from the start and to do that we need our best players.

Agreed. We shouldnt take any risks and field the strongest 11 possible.

My only concern is if heitinga starts, Oldham will stick a big guy on him and he'll get bullied.

I never understand people moaning about having to sit and listen to Chiles, Keane et al. Just go and do something else for the 15 minutes at half time, and sod watching before and after the match.

Townsend and Tyldesley though... well, you have to put up with them. Or just mute the TV.

O agree but think the pitch is playing a part in it too.

They are there for the taking but to be fair - they'll be thinking the same about us.

Next goal wins. Shogun's write up (excellent, by the way) says there's three goals in this fixture.

If Vic's injured throw Vellios on.

Better since we scored, less long ball and attacking with a bit of pace.  Jelavic needs to stay in and around the box instead of drifting, however I dont understand ow he jumped about 3 seconds early for the chance that floated over his head.  They still look a bit dangerous on the break so we will have to watch that.
Title: Re: Oldham v Everton

Jelavic seems to have really lost his mojo. That last take he had was embarrassing.

Needs to get back to shooting with one touch. Tat ball had all the pace he needed on it so if he had directed it goalwards instead of trying to get it under control, who knows?

Speaks of lack of confidence to me. So worried about not getting it right he wants it under control before he has a go.

Moyes needs to tell him "You were missing loads before too but you didn't give a shit coz you were banging everything 1st time and half were going in!"

He just needs to play how is natural for him and not worry about the goals - they'll come.

That's about the strongest side Moyes could have put out, F me our players have got to step their game up.  Hoping Vic's injury is not serious.

Anyway, Mirallas ought to add some quality to the right side.  Neville is where attacking play goes to die.

Blatant handball that. And a foul on Howard but they deserved it. Played well and fought hard.

We need to demolish them in the replay though

Fucking embarrassing we can't beat a League One side in a relegation battle! Last 10 minutes we were getting battered, couldn't even keep the ball. Neville really is a joke. Osman and Gibson were so poor today. Jelavic tries hard but fuck me he has gone crap, he should have scored at least one.

When Duffy came on I was going to post that if we lose a goal with him on the pitch, RVP gets banned seeing as he's been copying and pasting the same rants about him getting a game.  ;D

We'll take them in the replay, they've done well at home but we'll hammer them at Goodison.

We didn't play well overall, our two best players on the day went off. Didn't want a replay but I'd have taken a home tie against Oldham to get in the next round.

Disappointing but I'm glad we're still in it.

Yeah - we'll probably beat them at ours but we don't have the squad for shit like this. It was like we were playing Man Utd for the last 15 mins. Ridiculous. When their plan was clearly an aerial game, we had to retain possession, show for each other and keep the ball on the freaking floor at least a bit. Congratulations to Oldham though for sure. They're getting the replay they deserve.

Oldham played hard no doubt but not sure why a fair few are so accepting that we drew?  Regardless of the dubious nature of the second goal we were also spared at least twice by Howard and allowed ourselves to be pressed once again.  We had some decent possession but again players went missing.

People criticised Jelavic but at least he put the work in.  Osman and Gibson strolled around the joint for 90 minutes.

Because in the league if you draw then you miss out on the maximum gain (3 points), draw in the cup and you can still get to the next round through a replay and in this case, an even better chance of getting the best outcome.

In short, In the league you lose 2 points for a draw, in the cup you don't lose anything therefore it's not something to get over dramatic about.

Realistically we could probably use the extra game to help us find our form from earlier in this season. We need some motivation and not sure where it is going to come from at this point.

Live to see another day, but Moyes is back to his terrible substitutions. I think the Newcastle and Fulham match showed that you don't bring on a defender at the end of the game. It always throws us off and leaves more holes opened than it closes.

Agreed. At the end of the day it's eleven men against eleven men and the team who want it the most and put the hardest work in will more often than not win in the end.

We're still in it and we need to show more fight, fortitude and finesse in the second leg. Outfight them first and then outplay them once we're dominating.

How many times this season have we thrown away points to poor opposition?

It's understandable for people to get annoyed and angry when we perform poorly and potentially damage our chances of a good finish instead of pretending our current position is any kind of real achievement.

Oldham fans really did their team proud, got to admit.  They willed their team on and they came at us all the way to the final whistle.

We're in a stretch of really average form... that's all.

I hope we held on, my stream went into Basketball mode in injury time :(

Things were looking dicey when my stream was cut off.

But I wasn't expecting an equalizer, we may be pissed off, but at least we're still in the Cup.
The fans of Arsenal, the Spurs and Liverpool can't say that.

It adds to the romance of the Cup I guess, though we could do less with an extra match with the tough run in we have.
And some extra income..

By in its entirety you mean fast forwarded all the shit bits and watched the match in 15 minutes?

No. I avoided hearing anything about the match and my mate recorded it for me and we watched it about half 8 the full  game!just as they won the corner I said to him 'they will deffo score off this'. You just knew it!

Ah well  lets just ride out this shit storm and do them in the replay and hopefully we will have found our form by a potential quarter final. If either of the Manchester Clubs or Chelsea get knocked out this round then it only improves our chances of going all the way
