Good luck with the radio.

I think we will win well against Stoke. Confidence is building and Stoke are there for taking at the moment in my opinion.

I'd like to see is give them a damn good thrashing. That though may mask the cracks in our squad, with deadline day round the corner. So I'll settle for a sneaky 2-0 and save the punishment for the next team.

unless they let the teenage single mums that follow Stoke park their buggies in the steward's seats

Should be a good test for us at this point in time.

Rarely an easy game but we just have to try and keep building early season momentum.

nah, it takes quite a lot to actually get arrested at the match

I've never even been thrown out although a Manc police officer did instruct the stewards to kick me out when Jelavic scored in the last minute the other year.  Stewards ignored him until I questioned his statement when the stewards said "Just stand down there a bit"

I played them at home on FIFA last night. Took an early 1-0 lead, but then crumbled to a 1-3 defeat. Hope it's not an omen.

If it is an omen it's not all bad, the following game I smashed Utd 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Yea... Consistency... Not really my thing, ha!

Would absolutely love to win this one. Hate going into an international break on anything other than a win, seems like an age. I'd take a scrappy 2-1 any day of the week.

I assume we'll probably go with the 4-3-3 for this game:

                Stekelenburg
Holgate    Jags     Williams   Baines
        Gana      Barry     Barkley
Deulofeu                              Mirallas
                     Lukaku

Been like an old school Goodison display where we sustained pressure for a good 20 minutes. Keep that up and the goals will come.

Not the best half for Barkley.

only saw last 20 or so minutes but I think he has been involved in everything. Some of his decision making still off but he is surrounded by their players. He's pressing really well and getting into their box more. Fancy him score second half, vast improvement by him compared to last season for mine

How good is Barry. Absolutely instrumental to our play and a 26 year old version (whoever that is) of him has to be on the list of targets (along with striker, CB and GK). He's even linking u more with Lukaku and following his pass for a 1-2, last week's goal has give him confidence (plus the fact Stoke are sitting so far back

I think Deulofeu would get lost in this game. I love him but he's such a pussy.

Think it is open enough for him today and he could open up their back line .
Title: Re: Everton v Stoke
Post by: blueToffee on August 27, 2016, 10:03:09 PM
only saw last 20 or so minutes but I think he has been involved in everything.

Yeah, with Barkley it seemed at times like one of those games things weren't quite clicking for him. Do love his endeavor though, and more often than not he's trying to be very positive with the ball.

Agree on Barry.

Yeah, they complement each other really well.

Barry has been fantastic so far this season. And my concerns over his pace are seemingly being compensated for through the set up of the team and addition of Gueye.

Every team we play close down Barkley at the edge of the box so he rarely gets a chance to shoot. We do need a bit more invention in this area. Kev has it but we really rely on Lukaku to hold things up and then hope he can engineer something. Bolassie is still finding his feet obviously.

Wow what a game of football to watch. The scoreline does not tell the whole story.

Some great performances today and some very well planned substitutions, we were very lucky that Stoke didn't score one or two goals, but then again, Stoke were very lucky we didn't score three or four more.

Looking forward to seeing who we bring in by the end of the transfer window.

Not a bad performance out there today and some of those players clearly aren't 100 per cent yet. Lukaku and Bolasie could be devastating this season when they are up to speed.

Most impressed with ou r graft today.  Williams, Holgate and Gueye excellent but I think Baines is really underrated as a defender as well. It was the pressing from the front from Barkley and Mirallas that really helped today, a big change in both their games.

All of our forward players need to make better decisions in the final third, and we'll win games like that 3-0. All of them were guilty of shooting when they should've passed, and passing when they should've shot.

It'll come in time.

Major takeaway I have from today is that RK's signings were boss today. If he says it'll take two seasons to get the team he wants I cannot wait to see what he can craft together with Walsh.

Gana was MoM for me. Was everywhere and worked tirelessly

Happy with that.  Given the amount of time Koeman has had the signs of progress are massively encouraging.

Some excellent performances out there today, and when it starts to click in the attacking third (which I'm sure it will soon) we're going to be ace.

Difference in Mirallas seems like he's ready to put a shift in, really even from the tail end of last season.

I'm not sure he'd have clicked with Koeman until he's reached this point in his career as it seems like a lightbulb has come on for him in terms of his overall contribution to the team.

Probably the best overall run of games I've seen from him here (counting from the end of last season).

Yeah agree with this.

While understanding (and approving sort of) the pragmatism of the extra defender, I'm a bit concerned that we concede the wide areas when we go 3 at the back.

But overall when we get that extra cohesion in the final third we should look good.

Just shaded it; we weren't great in terms of quality but the effort was there.  Stoke will be upset they didn't take a point.

Jags and Williams did well, Holgate was awesome again and Baines had a good game, nice to see after a shaky season start.

Agreed. We've had this issue for a while. The understanding between our forward players was excellent towards the end of Moyes reign and at time in Martinez first season. Seem to have lost that in recent times, and part of it is simply down to poor individual decision making and too many bad touches, but hopefully with time and good coaching it'll improve significantly.

Gana is some player. He must have robbed the ball off their players four or five times. Maybe even more. Interceptions, closing down and breaking up play. Barry had more freedom to get involved further up the pitch because of him, and Holgate was excellent too. I did mention a few games ago wouldn't it be a bit dodgy upsetting Stekelenburgs form. I think it's even more important after today's performance that we leave him to it. Punches, catches getting out early, he's looking good. That was a decent performance if not a bit nerve wracking at times. I'm happy. :)

Not a massive fan of it to be honest. Soon as we made the change Stoke walzed through an empty middle of the park and had a very good chance to equalise. Was better once Davies was on but at the time felt it left us short.

Are those dots each team's shots? If so it's very encouraging.

We know the teams with the best defensive records are those which allow few quality chances and that's why they succeed. Roberto's Everton on the other hand handed out quality chances like it was going out of fashion (a question of team effort and tactical success yet some were determined to blame individuals).

I'm quite sure I read that Ronny's Southampton led the league in terms of not allowing quality chances last season (or they were certainly near the top) so hopefully we can expect that from us. To allow Stoke one shot in the penalty area over 90 minutes is a good sign in that regard.

Yeah, the dots represent shot locations. Bigger dots correspond to bigger chances.

As you say, Koeman's Southampton was one of the most difficult teams in the league to play against. If Walsh can supply him with a strong array of attacking talent, we should be very good.

Koeman and the staff were going ballistic during the waiting time for the freekick after Holgate was fouled near the end as we didn't have enough people back in the right positions when we knew we were just going to shoot.

Now the chances of them scoring from our own free kick were slim but it's the attention to detail in situations like that and proper assessment of risk and reward that is encouraging.

It'd be worrying if he wasn't getting any chances.

He'd normally have scored at least once today but you can see he's thinking about some of these chances instead of being instinctive.

He'd normally have scored at least once today but you can see he's thinking about some of these chances instead of being instinctive.

The drought is clearly on his mind and his shoulders dropped the longer it became apparent it wasn't going to be his day.
We desperately need another striker to challenge him as he's never had it in all his time here. You'd like to think it'd focus his mind a little more and he'd go back to playing on instinct again.

I know it's early days but was disappointed in bolasie today. He's final decision making was poor very poor and Koeman needs to tell him not every attacking run needs to start with the 5 a side stepover. On numerous occasions the simpler play would have sufficed.

Thought he played well myself. Especially like the bit he pushed over 2 stoke players when chasing down a 50:50.

Lukaku is the kind of player who looks rusty very easily.

Goes off the boil easy, gets put off his stride easy, and when it isn't going for him it really looks like it's going against him.

That said, he did OK with his hold up and link up play today, the thing that deserted him is the thing I'm least concerned about - his finishing.

Chill, every striker goes through a drought, it is self perpetuating the suddenly he scores and the flood gates open ,

Any chance we could still get 60 million for Lukaku? ;D

Mirallas has really responded to the managerial change - deserved the ovation he got completely - so unlucky not to score!

Best all round game I've seen from him for ages (at least the first 50 minutes)

I really believe koeman isn't going to fancy lukaku (or deulofeu for that matter) you have to make an awful lot of excuses for them on their bad days and I think he demands a base level they just don't reach when they are off their game. I'd have said the same for Mirallas too but he's gone up 30-40% in terms of effort already.
I don't think lukaku would still be here had Chelsea stumped up anything close to 70m and I think koeman might very well have been happy with that
Having said all that koeman could end up being the making of lukaku like he appears to be (so far) with Barkley and Mirallas.
