Newcastle

One can only assume Newcastle's TV specialists have been offered the incentive of some extra turkey this year because they've taken seven points from their last three fixtures (all televised) including wins over Spurs and Liverpool, whilst they only took a point against Aston Villa last weekend. Newcastle have a strong record against Everton at St James' Park in the Premier League with 12 victories to their name, they've only enjoyed better success against Aston Villa who they've defeated on 14 occasions at home. After failing to hold onto their lead last weekend, Newcastle have now dropped more points from winning positions this season than any other side (12) whilst they've taken just four points from the 10 matches in which they've trailed in the scoreline. Only their equally dismal North-East neighbours have conceded more goals (33) than the Magpies this season (32) and despite scoring 6 goals in one match against Norwich, only four sides have scored fewer than their 19 goals this season.

This will be the first managerial meeting between Newcastle's Steve McClaren and Everton's Roberto Martinez. Everton have scored at least three goals in three of Martinez's four fixtures against Newcastle whilst in charge the Toffees and it was in this fixture last season that Arouna Kone scored his first Everton goal. Everton won the last meeting which was made all the more impressive because it came whilst Newcastle were under the stewardship of one of the best coaches in England, John Carver. Overall Martinez has a pretty mixed record against Newcastle whilst McClaren only lost five of his 11 meetings as Middlesbrough manager against Everton (W3, D3) and all of his last eight matches against Everton resulted in two goals at most in each match. One random stat ahead of this tie is that Papiss Cisse has scored in all three of his appearances for Newcastle on boxing day.

Possible Line-Ups

Everton

So, after you've stuffed yourself with the never-ending Christmas dinner, you'll be able to look forward to two upcoming matches in two days for Everton, yay. Surely that's the best present you could wish for? apart from that time your overly left-wing aunt decided to have a goat donated to a Swahili family in your name, whilst all you got them was a box of heroes. Anyway, Everton didn't win again last weekend and lost their fourth league match this season as they fell to a 3-2 defeat against Leicester. On the bright side, Romelu Lukaku scored in 8 consecutive matches for Everton, another goal on Saturday would place him in second place on that list alongside Dixie Dean from 1927. Bert Freeman holds the record with a run of 10 matches in 1908. He is still five matches away from beating the Premier League record for most consecutive matches scored in which was set by Jamie Vardy earlier this season. If that isn't enough to get you excited, Lukaku has had a hand in nine goals (5 goals, 4 assists) in his last six appearances against Newcastle United.

I'll level with you. I didn't take into account I would have to write a paragraph with somewhat interesting facts about a centre-back during the making of the graphic above, so you might just want to skip to the rest of the thread, if you haven't already, as this will be the biggest crash since wall street. Here we go. Ramiro Funes Mori is 6 ft 1 inches tall which makes him one of the tallest defenders in the current Everton squad. I'm better than this, bare with me. Funes Mori is the first Everton player to ever wear tape on both his wrists when on the pitch. I'm sorry.

Newcastle are on tele. That doesn't bode particularly well for us.

On the other hand, they're shite and their manager is a joke with a tiny hair island at the front of his head.
Jeff: That's not the way to win.
Kathie: Is there a way to win?
Jeff: There's a way to lose more slowly.

He also likes to pull his socks up over his knees. Embarrassing tattoo or birthmark maybe?

What is the truth is neither being nor nothing, but that being does not pass over but has passed over - into nothing, and nothing into being. But it is equally true that they are not undistinguished from each other, that on the contrary they are not the same, that they are absolutely distinct

Didn't James Vaughan wear tape?

Or was it just on the one wrist?

I can't either, though we really must.  That 48-hour turnaround (against fucking Stoke of all sides) has brutal 0-0 draw written all over it.

Trying to decide whether to stay home and watch this, or just go out for the afternoon with the family. What would you do?
