Title: Everton vs Birmingham.
Post by: Pienaar's 6th dreadlock from the right on January 19, 2010, 01:48:27 AM
                             Howard
   Neville    Heitinga            Distin      Baines

   Pienaar  Fellaini         Bilyaletdinov  Donovan
                          Cahill
                         Saha

Same bench as Man city me tinks

Some people probably wont agree for the Bily in the middle but I think he should give him a go because he looks like a CM to me.

I would put Bily in the middle too mate.  I think we should murder them on current form.  3-0 or so.  Probably be a bore draw then!

Same performance as the last couple of games will do fine. I don't think Birmingham will be as confident about this one as they were the last time they came.

Comfortable 2-0 I think.

Picky beggar.
Not picky, just wouldn't be played in them positions, Bilyaletdinov will be on the left and Pienaar in the middle because of the way him and Fellaini played in the middle, it'll be the same team as the City game.
Title: Re: Everton vs Birmingham.
Post by: Fellaini25 on January 19, 2010, 04:02:39 AM
I wouldn't mind getting to see what Donovan is like in the centre or behind the striker in this game.

Bily played in the middle against City did he not? Our best option there whilst Arteta is still out. Agree with the team selected by andy and I'll go for 3-1.
Title: Re: Everton vs Birmingham.
Post by: }-m-a-c-c-a-{ on January 19, 2010, 04:19:18 AM
Donovan played on the right Bily on the left (but kept driftin into the middle and not givin Baines an option ahead of him on the wing!) Pienaar was in the centre with Cahill and fellaini holding!

Andy has put a team out that hasn't been tested so I don't understand why we would shuffle the team that destroyed City for a bit of a mixed up one.

The team that played City is the team that'll play Birmingham.

Everton 3-0 Brum
Saha (2), Fellaini

Agreed, they are still on a good run but will be more cautious given our improved form. I'm hoping too that they will see the cup as a distraction and so give us an easier ride. I'm keen for another another cup run after last year!!

4-0

Saha, Fellaini, Osman and Billy.

We didn't give City the twatting in terms of goals that has been brewing for a while.

Let's give Birmingham it and really push on in the cup.

With you on this one, Marty. Piece of piss.  4-0

It's gonna be tough but if we get the first then I think we'll win 2-0.

Cahill and Donovan

In our present form, we should win this one.
Which is good, we don't need a replay.
Never change a winning team.

Post by: GLewis on January 19, 2010, 07:15:45 PM
We might give Vaughan a run out, so that we can give Saha a rest with the Sunderland and Wigan games in mind.

But other than that I wouldn't change much. If Ossie's back I'd rotate one of Pienaar or Bily.

I don't know whether they'll play a full team, but if they don't we should really go at them hard and try to put the tie to bed early on.

I agree with the bit about Billy drifting into the centre but I disagree about the other thing about the team because these competitions are about trying and testing different strategies.

Id keep Bilyaletdinov wide left, the balance looked good all round against City and he played well. I don't think he's ready to play in the middle, maybe behind the striker, but not in the middle of the park. And Pienaar looks excellent in there, he's combative aswell as creative.

I think it'll be a pretty tight game. They're how long unbeaten now and must have a ton of confidence so we'd probably do a whole lot better if we can get an early goal, otherwise they might try and ride it out for replay.

I know we're on good form but they are a really good team this season I think things like 5-0 4-0 and 3-0 are ridiculous I mean they're ahead of us in the league they can't be that bad even though we've had a dire start to the season.

Exactly, I think people have their heads in the sand a bit as you don't get to their position in the league without doing something right. It doesn't mean they are a better team, but they are pretty solid at the back and are obviously playing for each other which is always a tough combination. And it was only recently that we drew with them at home - there was not 5-0 etc etc.

On top of that cup games are always going to be hard as nobody wants to get knocked out (I mean I wouldn't have pegged Blackburn to score 4 past Villa the other day).

Massive game for us. If we don't pick the needed points up over the next few games we could well be playing for nothing and this is our best chance of making Europe. I can't see either side wanting a replay and I can see goals. 3-1 to us I reckon with Donovan to get a brace

Theyre good but not their great.  If we manage to hit anywhere near the heights that we did against city then we should be reasonably comfy winners.  I agree with what you said about the defence though, Dann and Johnson particularly have been excellent.

I'm glad it's not just me who thinks that Birmingham are a very average side and are in a false position in the league. :)

Hart has been playing well in goal, from what I have seen and heard, but the rest of the team are not anything special. They have just have a bit of good fortune in their games combined with being able to field almost the same starting 11 for weeks on end. This has given them that all-important confidence which, IMO, can make just enough difference to get a result from a game.

You have to give  Brum credit for their defending and closing down. They have stopped us playing, and scored twice on the break. Our final ball has been awful today, need to use Donavan more. Maybe put him up from with Saha, and move Pienaar to right wing.

Title: Re: Everton vs Birmingham.

Our passing hasn't been too bad - it's the crossing that's been appalling. We must have attempted about twenty balls into the box and failed to find a blue shirt every time.

To be fair to the Brummies, they have a game plan of laving 9 players in their own half to squeeze space and stop our players playing - and then braking with a few when they do dare cross the halfway line. Problem is, they've done that twice and scored both times!

Birmingham's tactics are ugly and boring, but they are working well.

They're riding the pressure and countering at pace. But to be fair, if we were playing like we have been recently their defence wouldn't have held out and their counterattacks wouldn't have been so productive.

Now, even if we play great 2nd half, we've given them an easy job. All they have to do is sit back and not concede twice

When did I say Moyes was a genius?

The last two games have been great tactics from moyes and great efforts from the players. Moyes has used the same tactics today, bu the players aren't performing.

Let's see what Moyes does at half time. If he doesn't make subs, makes the wrong subs or we still play shit, then he's done bad. Until the end of the game, you can't really judge him.

Just didn't take our chances second half. Saha x2, Vaughan x2, Fellaini x2 chances. Great to see Mikky Arteta though, thought he added really quality when he came on, and went into the middle. It will have to Eurpoa cup we win this year then!

this

On a positive note, Arteta is back. He didn't look as rusty as I thought he would, seen as that was his first game for almost a year, but he clearly isn't at his best. But we know what he can do, so I'm happy.

So sad to go out though. Birmingham will never win this tournament playing like that. They just defended and defended and it's very frustrating. If they come up against a team like Arsenal or Chelsea later on, they're out. And if we'd just played like that all game then we really could have beaten them, no probs.

Fuck...

Bollox gave ourselves too much to do there - second half much improved performance and it needed to be but wasn't our day today.

Think it's a only fair to give Birmingham a bit of credit for pressing it all over the pitch today and making life difficult for us too tbh. But at the end of the day that bit of quality in front of goal wasn't there today, not the first time you could say that this season is it!

Birmingham are Shite...We did not take our chances 2nd half and that's why we are out, simple as.

Atleast Arteta is back, we just need Jags now and it's happy days and a good UEFA/Europa and run in to the end of the season.

Euro footy is not out of reach for next season, we could get into 6th or 7th by May.

80% of their game is defend, we've played them twice and totally dominated them, the previous time I don't know how they managed to get the draw.

Unbeaten run, how many shitty grateful wins and draws in that lot then.

Yes theyve rode their luck in a few games, so what.  Teams dont usually come out of the championship and start having fifteen games unbeaten by playing attractive football.  Football is about grinding out results and defending well, its not always about plating arsenal-esque football.  We should have beaten them today but how you can say they are shite is beyond me.

Taken me a while to get to grips with today, but here goes...

First half, largely woeful. No ideas, no composure (except for Fellaini), no pace.
Second half, better. Made some chances, but apart from Ossies' goal, Hart only had one serious save to make.

Plusses - Fellaini again the MoM for the Blues, and of course the return of Mikel Arteta. Pienaar, Heitinga and Ossie did okay.
Negatives - Distin looked indecisive; Billy poor, but maybe affected by the early bang in the face; Neville seemed on edge for some reason and Donovan didn't really figure. Cahill was lucky not to get booked before he did for persistant fouling and Saha appeared to be only at 70%.

The biggest negative and real worry to me is Baines. Dreadful defending throughout and totally at fault for the first goal with the one of the worst free kicks even he has taken... that left him totally exposed and out of position. Why does he have to take almost every free kick - he's just not very good at them.

And is he the ONLY left back at the club ?
I seriously think he needs a rest and we should give someone else the left back position. He's been woeful too many times this season and looking at him purely as a left back, I'd rather have Lescott there. Lescott wasn't and isn't a great centre back, but he played really well as a left back when Baines was injured.

The Blues need to sharpen up in front of goal AND play with the same level of intensity and pace as they did against City... in every game from now on.

1st highlight. At least they know how too. But if you want to get technical, where's the stats that say 80% is defending, doesnt back up the claim they are shite.

2nd highlight. They've scored 3, we've scored 1.

3rd highlight. Don't bother then.

As has already been said, there game isn't a lot different from ours at times. I take as a mark of respect that teams come to us and play defensive. To say they are shite is just, well, shite

Your entitled to your opinion but I really think your being a twat trying to make a case for them.

They had two counter attacks and scored, a devine intervention if ever I saw one, they showed nothing, diddly squat of a threat bar those two chances they took.

I agree with Rocka. Brum aren't a good side. They're organized and we can't defend the counter attack.

Plain and simple.

The resemblance of the season we finished 4th and them is very similar.

Reliable keeper. Solid cb pairing. they defend well and can hold on to a lead.

I'm gutted we got knocked out by shite like that after such a good few weeks so I will say this due to being gutted, they're a fucking joke who deserve to go out of business.

Birmingham are punching above their weight, much like we used to do.

They play to their strenghts.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of another team, you have to respect them.

They have had the luxury of an unchanged team for many games and this has to help, but get an injury or two, plus a suspension and then we will see how good they are.

In the meantime good luck to them.
