It'll be interesting to see how Moyes lines us up for this one, he usually plays Neville in midfield and Hibbert at right back for Derbies but I don't think he's going to have that option with Hibbo being injured. Benitez will make his team as big and as physical as possible, like he always does in derbies, he'll be worried about our aerial ability.

We might do the same but messing up the middle of the park usually means our football suffers, and Osman is playing really well at the moment. He played against Diame and Thomas against Wigan, two physical midfielders. It'd be interesting to see if Moyes trusts him against the likes of Mascherano, Gerrard and Lucas.

We struggle against physical sides this season (Brum, Sunderland, Wigan for example), but seem to play much better when the opposition isn't in our face. I guess it depends which Liverpool Benetiz puts out against us as to how we play.

Christ, I would love to see a victory, I've forgotten the feeling of a derby win, they are so rare.

I think the team pretty much picks itself for the derby, last 2 games = 2 wins and 2 clean sheets, with Senderos taking over from Distin for his second game in succession.

It'll be tight as always. We have to find a balance with our attitude in this one, to be confident enough to attack, but not complacent just because they're without Torres and a not-fully fit Gerrard.

I'm going for another 1-0 to us, Fellaini header ;)

no way this team should play, everyone is entitled to their opinion but moving neville to midfield will only disrupt felliani and the team, plus we still have a makeshift defense, and neville seems to tighten this up, donovan will also keep insua back which is what we need to do. same team as v wigan for me

My only worry is Senderos. He looked so slow on Saturday. Don't see the point in changing the midfield, it's been working well and we have plenty of options on the bench with Arteta (hopefully), Billy and Rodwell. Saha up front with Cahill somewhere behind.
Title: Re: Liverpool V Everton
Post by: Endless, Nameless on February 02, 2010, 05:12:56 AM
I'd be worried with Senderos against the RS simply because he's out of practice. He did well on saturday, but even Jason Scotland did slip by a few times. I'd much rather have the more experienced and cautious Distin for these hard games...
Title: Re: Liverpool V Everton
Post by: Gash on February 02, 2010, 05:17:53 AM
Not to worried about Senderos on Saturday. He's been injured most of the season, and isn't match sharp yet. Having said that he played last week, and has had a full weeks training now. So should be getting sharper.

Besides, Liverpool have no one really in attack that should worry Senderos.
Title: Re: Liverpool V Everton

Put Senderos on Kuyt and Heitinga on Gerrard, we'll have 'em!
Title: Re: Liverpool V Everton
Post by: ToxtethBlue on February 02, 2010, 05:49:16 PM
I'd probably go with Distin for this one, he's the only player who can keep up with Gerrard if the Liverpool man runs in behind our defence, something he's very capable of. I'm not sure Senderos or Heitinga would be able to handle that, and we'd end up playing a very deep defensive line.

I think we have the players capable of going there and seeing alot of the ball, Liverpool don't dominate possession anywhere near as much as they used to, they don't have an outlet infront of the back four. But I'd be a little worried about Osman in this game, Derby's don't really suit him, although saying that he's always played in a wide position in these games.

I'd think about using Pienaar in the middle and bringing Anichebe into the side as a right winger, I think he could have alot of joy against Insua, just like he did against Aurelio last season. It'd also give us more physical presence, something I think Moyes will be worried about. He always tries to make the side as big and as powerful as possible, as does Benitez.

Title: Re: Liverpool V Everton
Post by: Derek on February 02, 2010, 06:34:04 PM
Nice ideas. I'd definitely agree with the Anichebe thing, it's a bit unexpected and could pressure them quite a bit.

I think Donovan could really put in a performance and I have no doubt Johnny H will be relishing it. Cahill to keep scoring, Fellaini to look better than anything they have in midfield (he spins the ball away from Gerrard and I'm getting his face tattooed on my chest!) and Peanuts to be the most creative player on the pitch.

AND hopefully Hibbo is still in Thailand. ;) Kiddin.

very intelligent post

agree with the anichebe thing, depending on his fitness might be a good one. when he gets tired we could bring on donavon who seems quite lightweight altho i do really like him

Anichebe Osman Fellaini Pienaar
                      Cahill
?

Let anichebe ruin insua for the first hour, let let donavon finish him off!

If we go up we could possibly bring rodwell on for osman?

thats why i suggested we put someone else alongside fellani, neville or heitinga would be perfect but then it leaves the defence a bit fragile, wish jags was back so, heitinga could "fuck gerrard up" like he did so well at the goodison park

I agree but I'd have Donovan running his legs off for 60 and then bring on Vic for the last 30. It'll be like Insua will struggle then Donovan comes off and Anichebe come on to have a go at him again, a double blow if you know what I mean.
Why change the team because we've been playing so well?

this is how the match will pan out..

Moyes will recall Hibbert, thus moving neville into midfield. All thoughts of attacking, passing football will be forgotten by Moyes, who will stand by and watch as Hibbert and Distin launch the ball 70 yards forward. Saha will become disillusioned by balls whistkling over his head. Moyes will see this problem, but wait until 70 mins... when Saha will be dragged off for Vaughan.

before all this, gerrard will have scored a world class goal, or Dick Kunt will have no doubt popped up with his usual goal against us. Cahill or Felliani will have been sent off.

deep down we all know it

true true, anichebe off the bench would be better than starting him,

Osman and donavon need to get stuck in this game and not let it pass them by, we all know fellani, cahill and pienaar will,

if senderos/distin, osman, donavon and saha all have great games we will be very hard to beat

you are a real "glass half empty " type of person, arent you? Have a little more faith in Moyes. He's done alright for us. What a lot of people dont know is that he sees players in training all week, we dont. He chooses players on the basis of what's best for the team, not sentiment. Whilst I would hate to see Hibbert on the bench, never mind start, I'd accept it

Subs: Nash, Yakubu, Arteta, Bilyaletdinov, Anichebe, Senderos, Vaughan (I think Vaughan's there anyway).

C. Nash
D. Bilyaletdinov
M. Arteta
A. Yakubu
P. Senderos
V. Anichebe
S. Coleman

What a bench! But I'd have Vaughan over Anichebe.

F*ck experience if that means Neville hitting it long and over everyone's heads. Or Pienaar being ineffectual against a top 4 team again. Or playing an unready Arteta.

The "experienced" players are the ones that let us down the most again. It was only Cahill I'd say out of the usuals that deserved any credit, Heitinga and Donovan both new to the Derby were probably our better players.

These "experienced" players have lost again at Anfield. Is that the kind of experience that is beneficial?
Title: Re: Liverpool V Everton
Post by: NomadskiEFC on February 06, 2010, 09:22:04 PM
Sky got it right - "Possession without any Punch"

That was us today in the second half, really poor.

Its not easy for Arteta to come back to that though, you could see the teamwork wasn't there / players not being where they should be / poor balls to noone.

Cahill should have buried that chance.

Kuyts goal should technically have beeen disallowed for a push on both Neville and Howard - but both players should have been able to cope with that. Howards flap was embarrassing.

In the end we had plenty of the ball, but took us an age to do anything with it, if we did anything at all.  1 shot by Yak is all I can remember, against 10 men that is unacceptable.

Peanuts had a poor game, Osman the real weak link.

Width was also an issue, Neville takes an extra touch every time and this allows closure on him, ended up playing every ball sideways or backwards - really not using the extra man.

Maybe Cahills last season here, would have been nice to equal Dixies record, but nevermind - maybe we can meet up in the Europa final?

We gotta play a hell of a lot better from here on out though for that to happen.

I know he wasn't, I wasn't saying he was, just arguing with him being called a 'great player'.

No, I know that like. Just don't really see why he's a topic of discussion after today's game. Distin, Neville, Osman, Pienaar and (in your opinion) Saha, should be getting spoken about instead. They all bottled it.

next 3 games Chelsea, Man Utd, Tottenham....
with this weak play we will have a lot of problem...

At home we aren't so bad, I think we could nick a point off Chelsea and United.

Cahill isn't world class, or top class, but he's a great player. I think so, and to be honest, the term "great" is subjective.

We were awful today , once Felli went off we were f*cked , they just parked the bus and hit us on the break , we had no answer to their 9 man defence , Mikel was obviously not up to it yet , as hard as he tried , Pienaar was sytstematically fouled and the ref chose to ignore this , He was lucky to stay on anyway but that was no reason for the ref to bottle giving him any decisions . . how can they let Atkinson ref games a big as that is beyond me , The offside against Cahill when he was at least 5 yards onside is a case in point ... From the off it was obvious what certain Liverpoo players tactics were , Kick our midfield players into submission as far as the ref would let them , they succeeded  ... I'm just sorry Cahill's header missed .. but we just go on ... and pray that Felli is back sooner rather than later

The point has been made before that when he isn't scoring he contributes very little so no matter what your definition is, I certainly wouldn't call him a 'great player'.

Yeah, but consider how many points he's nabbed us with that noggin of his. How many draws he made victories and how many losses into draws?

this

He's scored more PL headed goals than anyone else, despite all the other top scorers being well into 6 feet tall. For that alone, he is great.

He always puts in a great effort as well and his passion lifts the team and the crowds.

FFS Verms, ask any pundit if they though Cahill was a great player, and they'd say yes, so why can't you (as an Evertonian) just praise one of our greatest servants?

Everyone is scared of him. If you read the interviews the OS have before each game, the opposition fans and journos always, always name Cahill as our No.1 threat. They know he's just impossible to catch if he feels like it.

Cahill, although not skillful, is a great player. He has proven his worth over many seasons, not just by his goals, but attitude and commitment which is infectious throughout the team.

But surely more than just Attitude and commitment make a great player?

Yep, goals help as well, he has plenty of those.

I don't think he's as bad a player as some make out either. Sure this season he has been gash, but in previous years, he has been a focal point in our team.

He's the closest to a legend we've had since the 80's imo.

But again, he's been the vocal point down to his scoring, I'd place Duncan Ferguson higher than Cahill on that Legends list.

I feel Dunc let us down too much to be classed that highly, but that's another story.

Cahill has been fantastic for us and although in his twilight now, can still contribute. Overall he has been a great player.
