Title: Everton V Swansea City
Post by: Sir Stealth on December 18, 2011, 01:58:34 PM
Would it be too much to ask for an early goal and a comfortable 2-0 win?And this line up

                    Howard

Hibbert  Jagielka Heitinga Baines

Drenthe Fellaini Rodwell Osman

            Stracqualursi Saha

I don't expect this but would like to see this line-up. The Cahill behind Saha strikeforce just doesn't work. We will probably stick with it though, dominate possession, concede a goal with their only effort on target and make some desperate substitutions to get us back in the game with 15 mins left

That looks like a good line up. I think if your playing Straq we need to drop Jags?? Maybe thats a bit controversial?

Moyes pretty much admitted that to himself when he subbed cahill on 60 mins, i think he will change it, I dont want straq anywhere near the starting line up, but beggars cant be chooses nowadays. id rather see vellios instead of staq but id be happy with that lineup

I think Strac's ability to hold up th ball or get flick ons is noticeably better than Vellios'. If we're expecting those kind of attributes from someone in that Cahill 2nd striker role, I think Strac Is the better choice.

Vellios would I feel be better suited at present to replacing Saha as the person to finish off the move.

I'm not sure Moyes has admitted anything withy regard to Cahill though. I wouldn't at ll be surprised to see him back I the line up with Saha. Perhaps he took him off with an eye to his fitness for the midweek game?

Showed more ability to win the ball in the air, and hold the ball up in 30 minutes, than any of our other strikers all season put together.  Give the lad a go.  Do you think we are playing so well at the moment, that it doesn't need shaking up?

Saying that, your the bloke that is still convinced we are gonna have 15-20m to spend in January, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Saha is best suited to playing as part of a 2 up front. Cahill is in woeful form at the moment and in every sub appearance straq has made you have to say he has been great at flick ons. won everything in the air yesterday and played it sensibly out to the wings and made a move for the box. Cahill didn't win the flick ons and didn't move as well as Straq. Denis deserves a chance up front as does Vellios, as Cahill and Saha just aren't producing the goods

Hibbert       Distin       Heitinga       Baines

                   Fellaini Rodwell

Drenthe                                       Gueye

                  Strac    Saha

Harsh on Jags but I think we miss Distin and I prefer Heitinga's ability to bring the ball out.  Gueye starts but gets subbed at half time for Bily or Osman. If Rodwell not fit Osman takes his place.

Straq did more in the time he was on than Cahill has done for most of the season. He deserves a chance, it wouldn't be any worse than Cahill starting again.

You're comment on him starting is slightly contradicted by then putting Barkley in the starting line up. Other than the QPR game, he hasn't done a massive amount to show he is ready to start games either.

I like that team ... even though I doubt if Gueye can keep his form for a full 90 mins yet which may give Ossie a chance to get half a game ? ...or even possibly Ross Barkley ?

I happen to agree with the Straq being given a start. The other players who could play that role have been severely lacking all season (and even last season too) and I just desperately want Moyes to mix thing up ever so slightly. We do look stale, and I know we have a small squad, but he has a few younger players who look hungry.

Moyes said Rodwell felt his hamstring during the pre-match warm up yesterday, so he's a mjor doubt.

I'd expect to see Drenthe come in for Gueye. Other than that I can't see many changes. I'd like Vellios or Stracqualursi to start alongside Saha but I think Cahill will be given another 55-60 minute run out.

I'll go for a 2-1 win to us. Baines and Drenthe for us, Graham for them

Howard
Hibbert Jagielka Heitinga Baines
Drenthe Rodwell Fellaini Bily
Osman
Saha

Id like to play:
Howard
Hibbert Jagielka Distin Baines
Drenthe Rodwell Fellaini Osman
Vellios/Straq Saha

If Rodwell is fit then it will be this I reckon. It's quite well balanced really; the only problem is that all of our forward options seem to be better suited as subs at present. The fact that Denis is deemed worthy of a go simply because he won some headers really sums up the poor form of everyone involved so far this season.

Cahill could stay in the XI, but I think getting taken off after 60 mins when we are losing is a string sign that Moyes thinks we need something different. Up until the past year, if we were losing, there is no way Cahill would have been subbed.

He needs a rest, for himself as much as the team. It's sad to see someone who has given so much to the team over the years, struggling like this at present. A few "easier" appearances as a sub should help build his confidence again.

Don't see Rodwell being fit. I too would go for Cahill playing CM tbh. Needs a change. Would offer extra attacking threat from a deeper position and the pressure would be taken away from him. The opposition would not be watching him as closely and above all he's a better option than Neville in CM.

             Howard
Neville jags heitinga Baines
           Fellani Cahill
Drenthe   Osman   Guaye
                Saha

Maybe one of jags or heitinga could be rested for this one with Distin coming in. Busy Xmas period and all. Barkley played in reserves so won't see him again I doubt. (shame) am I missing something that he's not getting time off the bench?

Amazes me that so many are having a pop at Cahill and most are saying nothing about Saha. His goal record is more or less as bad as Cahill's but at least Cahill puts a shift in.

somewhere amongst this is a hint from Davy Moyes that Denis will be staring against Swansea

"" And Moyes added that on-loan Argentine striker Denis Stracqualursi may get the chance to show he can provide that extra goal threat after a bright half-hours cameo against Norwich.

Ive been thinking about giving Denis a go because I want to make sure we give everybody the chance to score us the goals, said Moyes.

Denis has looked better in recent weeks and the chance that fell to him, Ive seen him score. He was top goalscorer in Argentina last season and I thought this is it because Ive seen him do it all the time and he does score goals.

I thought this is the one. I always thought he might get me a goal or two over Christmas.

It will depend on how other people play and how he does as well if were going to see any more from him, but if I can Id like to give him a chance to see what he can do.

You tend to find that people who score goals score them everywhere and Ive seen him scoring, but there are bits of his game he needs to work on his speed, his link up play but I think if we could get him enough of the ball in the box then we might get a goal; he has quickness of thought in the box,but if hes going to be ready hes more ready now than he was, thats for sure."

Saha played well on Saturday, was extremely unlucky not to in the first half, and forced a good save in the 2nd

What i'd like to see is completely different to everyone else and what will inevitably happen.

Howard

Hibbert/Coleman   Heitinga    Jagielka    Baines

             Rodwell       Fellaini      Barkley

   Gueye              LS/DS/AV/CM         Drenthe

I want to see exciting attacking football, it may be different to what everyone else is thinking but this is what I want.  The striker situation is tricky at the moment but with two attackers to the side I believe whoever it is will score goals. I'd prefer Donovan to be in the middle of that when he arrives.

I don't believe they should, i'd like to see the 3 attackers stay up front as the outlets as the 7 other players and Howard should be able to defend. The attackers shouldn't have that responsibility, for e.g. when we played Arsenal the counter attacks they made although not as effective as they could have been, were very dangerous because they left they're 3 main players up at the half way line.

I'd like that team Verm.

Can't see Neville not staying in while we're still struggling though.

I can see why he's there as it allows Felli more freedom; hopefully Felli's passing will improve on the last couple of games.

The only thing is that I like Drenthe on the right so he can cut in and shoot.

Seamus can only play on the right, so that restricts Drenthe quite a bit.

Drenthe looks 10 times the player on the right than the left. Which IMO makes him pretty much incompatible with Coleman. I'd like to see Gueye on the left and Osman middle but I suspect it'll be Osman LW and same again with Neville and Fellaini.

I think we might see a sub appearance from Barkley tonight.

Team: Howard, Hibbert, Baines, Jagielka, Heitinga, Neville, Drenthe, Osman, Coleman, Fellaini, Saha.

Not sure if that means Fellaini will play off Saha, or if it'll be Osman.

Everton Football ClubEFC team to face Swansea: Howard, Hibbert, Baines, Jagielka, Heitinga, Neville, Drenthe, Osman, Coleman, Fellaini, Saha. Subs: Mucha, Strac, McFadden, Distin, Cahill, Gueye, Barkley. COYB.

Will probably be Osman behind Saha which has usually worked well... could it be Drenthe tho? Ossie on the left and Coleman on the right....

Good that Cahill has been dropped, disappointed Strac doesn't get the nod.

Hopefully Drenthe. Fellaini shouldn't play up there and Osman can just pass to Baines on the left.

Drenthe playing on the left then?

Seems a waste after what he did at the weekend coming in from the right. Also seems a defensive mistake, he's not gonna cover when baines bursts forward.

Hopefully it'll be Osman left, Coleman right and drenthe floating about.

Bit disappointed with that line up. Gueye taken straight out and not given a run of games to see how he gets on, no doubt taken out so we can have Coleman down the right to help out Hibbo with Sinclair. Fucks me off that Moyes worries more about the opposition rather than picking a team for the opposition to worry about us!.

I'd of liked to of seen Coleman at RB with Drenthe ahead of him as Coleman as the pace and stamina to stick with Sinclair through the game, and Drenthe looks more threatening coming in off the right.

Good to see Cahill dropped to the bench but what about giving Stracq his first prem start and seeing how he gets on?. If he gives him half hour again tonight then fair enough but why talk about him edging towards being ready and giving him a chance and then not doing so?!.

And Neville in midfield again, i'd rather see Ossie dropped deeper and give either Barkley or Gueye a go off the striker, freshen the team up some for a change but no, he's got to have atleast 3 of his favourites in as Moyesy!.

Not liking Neville in the team, but other than that I'm happy with it.

We have a very attack-minded bench so we've got options.

Cahill to rebound today and score the winner off the bench in a thrilling (sarcasm) 2-1 victory. Baines to score a free-kick as well.

All things considered, we're playing well at least. You get the feeling that once the first goal goes in for us then we'll add another one or two.

We've looked much more balanced with Drenthe on the right too. It's causing Swansea all sorts of problems down our right flank. Keep it up and we may just get a precious win.

Not a bad first half, we played some nice football and kept Swansea very quiet. They haven't come here to win, so we need to figure how to break then down.

But for Vorm we'd probably be a couple up by now.

Hmmmm, well not too far of our standard home performance against a team we'd hope to beat.  Well on top, but it's only going to take one chance and we'll be behind.

Their keeper is very good, but Gueye should have scored twice - looks to be lacking a bit of confidence in his shooting which isn't all that surprising really.  Hopefully he can bag one because I think he's got it in him to build on his first one whenever it comes.  The timing of his run for the second chance was brilliant by the way.

Drenthe oozing class again, by far our most dangerous player.

Neville for all his leadership qualities should not be on the pitch.  Every time he gets the ball it seems his only priority is not to get caught in possession and to get rid - where it goes isn't important.  Would like to Stracq on for him, with Ossie dropping back.

all about the big man for me so far. bossed the whole game and at the centre of everything we do.  swansea staying well clear of central play, and trying to keep wide. drenthe is causing problems, but i have to say he sometimes takes too many touches when a faster pass might open things up quicker.

good game to watch though, hardly any fouls and play has flowed well.

We have played quite well.

Drenthe makes SUCH a difference its unbelievable, our midfield will look exciting in Jan with Rodders back fit and Donovan in there too.

WE just need a natural goalscorer and finisher.

I'm not so sure, I think Fellaini is doing a good job on that by himself whereas Neville looks destined to make a rash tackle far too often.  Don't know if it was picked up on but after the whistle had gone for one of our free kicks on the edge of the area he flew in with a crackers tackle on someone that the ref fortunately didn't see.

We definitely need someone next to Fellaini though, they can move the ball around well and will easily outpass one DM.

Decent performance, nothing special though, tbh, i thought Swansea played well and pressed the ball very well, didn't give us a second on the ball and forced us back alot. I wish we could knock it about like they do and press the ball like they do.

And as for some saying the likes of Hibbo and Felli had good games, we must of been watching different games cos i thought Hibbo was shit. His distribution as always was crap and always went backwards cos he hasn't got a clue when put under pressure. Felli was ok but gave the ball away too much, he'd do the hard part of winning it, but then would give possesion away. For me, Ossie was are best player, good feet at times, retained the ball well and scored a beauty header to win us the game.

I thought Gueye did ok aswell and should of scored really, i said before the game i was disappointed he didn't start and be given a run in the side to see what he's capable of and he came on and did ok.

Good win, bit better performance and a clean sheet. It still needs to improve for me, bit sharper with the ball and i'd like to see us close down instead of standing off and letting the opposition come at us.
