Title: Everton vs Spurs
Post by: the doc on February 26, 2010, 06:44:35 AM
we can't play any worse (can we) and on the plus side we should have a better defence, Saha loves playing  against London teams (for some reason) moyes will rightly do the "hairdryer" treatment, and my wifes a spuds fan, so COYB!

It's an away game, therefore it's the Spurs v. Everton.

Even before the dreadful display in Lisbon, I was not too optimistic about this one.
We never play well after European travels, this time will be no different.
Now we have to wonder what effect the disastrous result will have for the team.
I'll take a draw.

Howard Coleman Heitinga Jags Baines Donovan Arteta Osman Pienaar Vaughan Saha

Change things a bit, go 442, have some passion on in the form of Vaughan, have a right back who can actually attack rather than aimlessly ping the ball to an opponent and keep the other hoofers well away from the team and sell them in the summer!

This team if Cahill doesn't make it. Everton to respond well after Euro Nightmare.

0-2, Saha and Yakubu off the bench.

Jagielka to make an appearance in the dying moments and Heitinga to marshall Defoe brilliantly all game.

The team has to show that they want to achieve something this season.

Our away form has been poor all season, but it has to improve especially against a rival for the Euro spots.

We've had some good performances from a lot of our players at the Lane in recent years so hopefully this will inspire them.

I look at this as the first of many must win games if we're to make europe next year. It'll be tough but I still think we can do it if Heitinga and Distin play as well as they have been recently but we're really going to miss Cahill if he's not back, his knack for scoring important goals is so valuable. No prediction this time.

I'd be surprised if Billy makes the starting line-up, he looked really out of sorts and the long season prior to coming to us really does look like its taking its toll now. If I was Moyes I'd have him on the bench.

If we have any chance of making Europe we need our away form to drastically improve. Unfortunately its also unrealistic to expect it to at this point in the season, but if somehow we could do it (and in doing so give a foothold and confidence going into the other away games) we would have something to fight for this season.

Alternatively losing Sunday would mean that the season is effectively done.

In a side note and in my continuing optimism of seeing him again Moyes will see fit to give Coleman another crack at Spurs after his last outing.

             Howard
Neville Heitinga Distin Baines
              Rodwell
Donovan Osman Arteta Pienaar
               Saha

Without Cahill I don't think we can play the 4-4-1-1 well, at least not with Billy playing the way he is right now.  I know this has been mentioned in other threads, but it baffles me that he seems so out of shape/tired in every game.  But I could definitely see the same team as at Sporting, except Distin in for Senderos, taking the field against Spurs.  And if we somehow get the Billy that showed up against Man U., then that will be fine.

Another team I would like to see would be the 4-4-1-1 with Donovan/Pienaar in the Cahill role and Gosling out wide.
Title: Re: Everton vs Spurs
Post by: Thom on February 27, 2010, 03:35:37 AM
Heitinga, Distin and Rodwell in for Yobo, Senderos and Bily.

I think, after a tough month, this match could be a bit too much of an ask. Saying that, with the virus around Spurs we could sneak something. I'll say a draw then, but I won't predict a scoreline and scorers.

Saying that, with the virus around Spurs we could sneak something.

With our luck when it comes to 'injuries' we'll probably lose half the squad to the fucking plague when they return from WHL.

Howard

Neville Heitinga Distin Baines

Osman Rodwell Arteta Pienaar

Donovan

Saha

Nash, Coleman, Jagielka, Billy, Yakubu, Gosling, Vaughan

And we'll bounce back with a 3-2 win. Pavlychenko (sp?) and Modric for them, Saha and 2 from Osman for us.

no yobo? has he been blamed for sporting when i would say the blame should have been equally senderos fault

Wait!! No Coleman either!

Our best player against them at Goodison and where is he? The OS list isn't always the most accurate but this was always my fear (thinking Hibbert would be back by now) that a "favourite" of Moyes would come straight back in and Coleman would be nowhere to be seen.

If you trust Jags to be fit then fair enough but there is no need for Jags, Senderos, Distin, Heitinga competing primarily for CB and just Neville for RB. Techincally I know Gosling could cover there but he has never looked convincing to me in that role, and Jags also has RB on his CV but he is a shade of the player we know him to be just as he is at DM.

This better be a mistake otherwise its just dumb dumb dumb by Moyes. How are we supposed to foster any sense of competition if there is one rule for some players and a different one for others?

didnt catch what the injury was..but here is the team news, according to this anichebe is playin alongside yak but on espn before they had yak up front on his own.?

Victor Anichebe and Yakubu will start in attack when Everton take on Tottenham at White Hart Lane this afternoon.

The pair are two of five changes made by manager David Moyes following Thursday's Europa League exit at Sporting Lisbon.

The others see defensive duo Sylvain Distin and John Heitinga return after missing out through suspension and ineligibility respectively and Jack Rodwell, one of the heroes of last week's victory over Manchester United, come into midfield.

Philippe Senderos has not recovered from a hip injury sustained in Portugal but his replacement at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Phil Jagielka, is again on the bench.

Heitinga and Distin are joined in defence by captain Phil Neville and Leighton Baines, who was yesterday called up by Fabio Capello for England's friendly against Egypt on Wednesday.

Mikel Arteta, Leon Osman, Steven Pienaar and Rodwell will make up Moyes' midfield. French striker Louis Saha is not in the squad.

Everton: Howard, Neville, Baines, Heitinga, Distin, Osman, Arteta, Rodwell, Pienaar, Yakubu, Anichebe. Subs: Nash, Gosling, Yobo, Jagielka, Donovan, Vaughan, Bilyaletdinov

Interesting. I'd expect Anichebe to play on the right wing, with Yakubu up front on his own, but Moyes can always go 4-4-2 if he needs to. Hopefully it pays off.

Gosling has is a utility player and can play a variety of roles plus we are short right hand side.  We have another two right backs ahead of Coleman.  I agree he needs a chance but it isn't as easy as just playing him because we like his cameos.

To be fair, they've done the same to us as we have done to Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Man U. Close down quickly, don't let anyone settle on the ball. And they've been so quick on the break.

Some changes needing made at half time. Donovan needs to come on, Vic doesn't look ready.

More worrying, there doesn't seem to be much fight about us at the moment.

Anichebe is doing well considering his injury and gametime, he's found a bit of technical ability but we are so fucking exposed its unreal. If Jagielka had been back longer i'd have him play righ-back rather than Neville. He should just stay back. Well I would definitely consider bringing on Vaughan as well because if the service is poor we need somebody who is going to work his arse off to create oppotunities. Apart from his goal against Man Utd Rodwell's inexperience has been repeatedly shown up in recent games and I could really do without him starting. As for Anichebe he's looked really strong holding the ball up but seems a little off the pace.

Nooooooooooooooooooo

not a good way to go out Landycakes...

Is this his last game?

Pienaar's in danger of a second red in 4 games.

Vaughan on. Another positive change. 2 meter Peter coming on for them. I didn't want to see that.

Wow! Heitinga can take corners too.

If Jags had scored from a Heitinga corner I think everyone in the ground would have combusted.

Good booking for Heitinga, one of those ones you take for the team, they could have been in there.

A real shame. We threw it away in the 1st half, but we came back valiantly in the 2nd and did well enough to get a draw.

But we didn't get it. Overall? Fucking shocking. After Libson, you'd think they'd want to put things right. They didn't wake up until the second half. Disgraceful.

Can't wait for "Nev", "Ossie", "Stevie", "Mikky" and "Moyesy" to trott out the same old shit on the OS.

excellent effort 2nd half.

landon donavon looks absolutely fucked though. running on empty.

dont wanna be to downbeat but i think that virtually writes off any chance of any form of european qualification.

Yet again our inconsistancy has cost us. We need to start playing for the full 90 minutes. We had our chances though.

seems like that may be the best formation to play with while fellaini's out, distin and jags at the back with heitinga in front of them.

It's never over, spurs still have to play arsenal, City. They can lose them. We just have to ensure we play like that 2nd half from the off. Great shame today. I'm guttted.

Disagree, after we scored we forced 2 great saves and Donovan missed an empty net, Spurs did nothing of note. A draw would have been a fair result but we easily could have won.

Spurs didn't need to press as much second half and looked keen to allow us to steal a point like at Goodison. Considering the sporting game midweek, not overly surprised with the team selection and slow start, albeit disappointing. Spurs deserve credit for the first half performance, Modric and Bale especially.

Couldn't believe Donovan's miss, but haven't seen much criticism in comparison to the defensive errors. Missed opportunity, but we just need to focus on beating Hull and having a good run in from there on.

Disappointing, especially the first half.

Got to look forward now. Over a week off for the players to get their minds back into gear and get rested. We must beat Hull.

Agreed.  Just a shame it was Donovan and not Yak who had that chance.  Must be a contender for miss of the season that, but I wasn't all that surprised by it - lets face it, decent player though he is, Dougal isn't the sharpest when presented with a ball in the box.

Mate, these are premiership footballers, missing a 24 foot target from 3 feet away must actually be quite difficult.

End of the day he didn't miss on purpose and is probably mortified.

I should hope not, and so he should be mortified.  What I was trying to say is that he's obviously not very confident/gifted when presented with the ball on a plate in the box - he's fluffed a couple of opportunities before Spurs while he's been here, and I hear he's missed many a sitter back home etc.
