Title: Everton Vs Stoke City
Post by: New Free Transfer Signing on March 23, 2013, 07:28:59 PM
Will be a tough game this, with the suspensions to Fellaini and Pienaar, but with their form recently and our new found positivity from last week, we really  should be winning this. And yes, I hate playing Stoke too.

The only two fixtures I've been home from Uni for this season are this match and Wigan on boxing day.

Absolutely tragic stuff.

Though with any luck I'll be in Liverpool next year and will actually be able to go to decent games.

I'll take a scrappy 2-1 win again like that Wigan game, was awful stuff though!

Any win will do against these, be tough without Fellaini and Pienaar though.

We need big showings from Coleman and Mirallas again and either Vic or Jelavic to get in amongst the goals.

Tough to predict the team. Presuming neither Howard or Jagielka return I'll guess it will be this

                    Mucha

Coleman  Heitinga Distin Baines

                Neville Gibson

Anichebe  Osman  Mirallas

After Neville's horror show in the cup, I would not be too surprised if he was out again.

                                                                      Mucha
                                Coleman          Jageilka     Distin        Baines

                                Miralles                  Barkley              Anichibie
                                                             Jelavic

Doubt it will happen but would much prefer something like this.

I think it might work to our advantage having Fellaini out. We'll be more reliant on passing our way around the pitch rather than resorting to lumping it up field to Fell who would lose out to Stoke's defense.

To be fair there's some decent draws in there, especially the 4 all against Utd, plus a win over Chelsea. Although he was ref for the absolute fucking-over we got from the officials at home against Newcastle this season.

Haha this gave me a good laugh. He has seemed to go missing after all the nonsense statements he has been making....

Speaking of Moyes/bluenose27...In the presser today he said he is hoping to have Jags and Howard back for tomorrow. Does anyone feel that is necessary? Personally I'd rather give each of them one more week to get to tip-top shape before coming back. Think Tinga and Distin did well last match as did Mucha so no need to rush any of them back. Tinga is not as much of a weak link against Stoke since they don't have the pace up front to expose him.

Thoughts?

I agree, no need to rush either back.

Having said that, it now means that Mucha has peaked and will end up letting in 2 soft goals and Heitinga will watch as the attackers prance around him.

It'd be 100% something Moyes would do but after winning 2-0 we shouldn't be changing the line up for semi-fit first choices. If Howard wasn't fit enough for the US game the other day, I can't see him being ready for this game.

Almost inevitable for our squad. Look great against the best and then lay down against the rest. It is the Everton we both love and hate.

In reality though I'd hate for Moyes to pull another Kevin Mirallas with our players and bring them back too early only to see them reaggravate an injury and be out longer.

Tinga is the much more hip and modern one in the family. He draws in the young crowd where as Heitinga is the vintage edition that hasn't quite aged enough for my liking. Tinga is the cocktail I want to enjoy now where as Heitinga is a 2 yr old Scotch. Still needs one more year to even be considered drinkable.

Can't see Arsenal dropping points at home to Reading

Much appreciated. I'm about to embark on an 8 1/2 hr drive to Florida so at least I can get some driving in before kickoff to help pass the time a little faster. Praise the Lord for the Tune-In app on my phone. I guess I should just hope that the match doesn't bore me and cause me to fall asleep while driving.

I still wonder if he isn't going to push Baines up to the left and cram the box more with CBs. Baines isn't bad in the air but the ball to the back post is something we've seen exploited.

seems like it. It's pretty much a 5-2-2 excluding him with him spending a lot of time on the left but moving to the center and right on occasion. Difficult to see whether he is supposed to be behind the strikers but he's just more comfortable on the left or whether it's Moyes' tactics.

Its no surprise that finally even their own fans are getting on to how dreadful they are.

Most teams are sussing them out, defend set pieces properly and you pretty much have them, this is still gonna be a danger in the second half though.

Its been good for stoke the past few years because they where laying foundations but their football cant surely continue to be as dull as this for much longer.

No Moyes just subbed him after like 80 minutes, people need to realise that just because he's being careful with him doesn't mean he's constantly going off injured.

Results are all that matter at this stage of the season, so job done.  We'd have conceded in a game like that sometimes this season, so hopefully that was a sign of some mental toughness returning.

Fucking massive game next week now though.

You havin a laff? He only made 3 saves- one of which was an awful palm right back into the center of the goalmouth which was unbelievably put wide. Very quiet game he had after that.

Best performers were Baines and Coleman for me. Anichebe did pretty well too. Rest distinctly average.

I think there's a fair chance we will to be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if he kept the same side with both Fellaini and Pienaar still out.

One was a world class save that would have had us behind early in the game.

They should've had more cards but Barkley kicked it away in front of the ref, that was a bit dumb to be honest.

Minty does have a point about him palming it back out rather than away though.  It wasn't awful that he did it, but there would be a bit of an inquest in to it if Walters had put away the rebound.

He was decent though and seemed to cope pretty well with the Stoke bombardment

I've not read the match thread so don't know what the group consensus was, however it seemed to be a 3-4-2-1 to me and there were positives to be taken from it considering we'd not played it before.

Certainly don't think it was terrible.

Yeah, it wasn't at all bad, and it wasn't 3-5-2. Certainly in the first half Stoke had no idea how to deal with it. In the second half they pressed up more but we failed to exploit the space opening up because they pinned back our full backs successfully.

You can only palm it out wide if you either have enough time to push it very strongly or the ball has enough pace on it to just steer it wide. Neither was true here. He might have dealt with it better (there's always a better way to do things in hindsight) but it certainly wasn't a mistake.

Yes, he'd just received treatment before he was taken off, in fact he went off straight afterwards. Hopefully it's just a twinge but don't get your hopes up.

I thought we created more than usual against Stoke, we seemed a bit unsure at the beginning but all in all it wasn't a terrible balance by any means. Could have been a different story if their early chance had gone in as it would have allowed them to sit back even more than they did.

I wouldn't call it a mistake, but ideally he could have dealt with it slightly better and it was very lucky that we didn't concede from the rebound.  He did have enough time imo to have palmed it away as it was hardly point blank.

Anyway, I'm not really criticising him but I could see where Minty was coming from despite his criticism being OTT.

It wasn't point blank but it was coming towards his right while he was moving to the left, it's difficult to generate much power when that happens.

Mirallas played as a striker, strikers lose the ball often.

Gibson's passing was absolutely atrocious today though, not even on the same patch as Osman.

I thought Gibbo and Osman had quiet games today. I don't think any of our players were allowed to get into their game with Stoke's bully boy tactics.

Never seen Shawcross play in the flesh before- what an ale'ouse player. They're just a gang of thugs with a ball. They couldn't handle Mirallas running at them all game so proceeded to boot fuck out of a blue shirt that came near them.

Exclude the 5 passes in his own half then he completed 7/13 passes in the opposition half, not that good really. His hold up play, first half especially was poor.

Second half he was much better:

12/16 completed passes in the opposition half.

Interesting defensive formation, with three at the back, which worked well.
It gave more offensive freedom for our wing-backs.

We were a tad fortunate when the Walters header didn't go in, but other than that we were worth the three points.
Great goal by Kevin Mirallas to decide the match.
