Aston Villa v Everton FC
Villa Park (Capacity: 42, 877)
Saturday 26th October 15:00
Premier League Match 9

Aston Villa's last 5 matches 2013/14:

Norwich 0-1 Aston Villa (Kozak)
Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham - League Cup
Aston Villa 3-2 Manchester City (El Ahmadi, Bacuna, Weimann)
Hull 0-0 Aston Villa
Aston Villa 0-2 Tottenham

Everton's last 5 matches 2013/2014:

West Ham 2-3 Everton (Baines x2, Lukaku)
Fulham 2-1 Everton - League cup (Naismith)
Everton 3-2 Newcastle (Lukaku x2, Barkley)
Manchester City 3-1 Everton (Lukaku)
Everton 2-1 Hull (Mirallas, Pienaar)

Aston Villa regularly have played a 4-3-3 formation this season, however they've only won one game using it which came on the opening day at the emirates. In the absence of Ashley Westwood they chose a 3-5-2 formation in their last win against Manchester City. The other victory which came away to Norwich saw Lambert set out with a flat 4-4-2 formation.

Despite a tough start, Villa have managed 10 points from their 8 matches which puts them 13th in the table going into this one. Attacking wise, they're nothing to write home about besides Benteke's 4 goals so far in the league though Agbonlahor is yet to score a league goal this season so will inevitably end that on Saturday against his favourite club.

Everton

Everton will go into the weekend in 7th place yet again, despite beating Hull City 2-1. However the distance between Everton and Manchester United in 8th place is 4 points this week meaning Everton can't drop any lower even with defeat. The victory over Hull city brought up our total number of goalscorers to 7 with Mirallas and Pienaar bagging the goals. Only Swansea, Chelsea and Arsenal have more goalscorers.

Thankfully, Steven Pienaar returned from injury to take a place on the bench last Saturday meaning that the only injury concern left is to Antolin Alcaraz. For the first time this season we may see our strongest team. Meanwhile, Aston Villa will be without midfielder Gary Gardner, central defender Jores Okore and winger Charles N'zogbia for our visit.

This will be the 215th meeting between the sides. Aston Villa won the first fixture 2-1 at Villa Park in 1888.

I think I'm one of the few Evertonians who doesn't mind them too much.

Think I've had a dislike for them since that game discussed in the ticket thread.

Also, the years when O'Neill was there they just really wound me up. We'd batter them most games yet never seemed to win.

Their crowd and the media seemed to think that they always just missed out on the CL yet they (nearly) always finished below us who finished about 9 points off it!

On this game though I thought the Spurs fixture today was a good preview for us.

They often pressed quite high up, particularly in the first half, causing a few errors from Spurs.

Once Spurs scored though Villa weren't great aside from 10 mins or so after Benteke came on.

Of course Benteke will start against us so they'd expect more of a threat from the start.

Agbonlahor more so.

Needs filed under "Danny Welbeck". Another player who counts his blessings every night that he's managed to somehow pass himself off as a top player for another day.

Obviously he'll score now.

That Luna tired badly against Townsend.

Might be a game for Deulofeu to take advantage against later in the match.

Neither here or there with me. The only time they got on my nerves was the 2-3 game at our place and the Ashley Young goal last minute, paired with o'Niells "world class" comments. Pissed me off no end that night.

They could do with getting shut of that "on the piss my lord" bollocks. That's annoying.

I expect a really difficult encounter. The return of Benteke is a really big plus for them.

I think where we completely overshadow them is in the middle of the park, I can see Barry and McCarthy running the show.

Hopefully we end up with all three points but I can definitely see this one being a draw.

Should be interesting to see how Benteke and Lukaku play. Not to suggest there is any animosity between the two (I really have no idea either way), but they are competing for the starting spot at striker for the world cup, so I would not be suprised to see big/agressive games from the both of them.

Were not usually great away at Villa. Last season and the 3-1 win in 04/05 are the only ones I can seem to remember from the PL era

Glewis posted a table in this thread showing that we are worse against these then we are against Liverpool, and from what I remember we are hideously bad against them!

Last seasons game came when we were bang in form and they were all over the place with loads of new signings. Still hopeful of a win but it will be tough. They have a world class goalscorer in Benteke

Fair enough, but we're streets ahead of them these days.

Plus Benteke is a good player like, but he's far from world class, we have much more to fear in our team

                       Howard
Coleman     Jags       Distin         Baines

                  Barry      McCarthy
Miralles             Barkley           Piennar

                      Lukaku

Finally a good balanced side, I was thinking this was a draw or defeat until I thought about what the first 11 should be.

Don't worry - he has soft tissue damage this week according to the BBC who reminded me that this is the most-played fixture in the English top flight. Aston Villa have 72 wins to Everton's 71 from the previous 196 league meetings.

Benteke expected to start btw.

Merson:

There's something missing when Aston Villa play at home and I just don't fancy them. I don't see when they're going to win a football match at Villa Park. They seem alright away when teams attack them, but when opponents sit back and they have to attack then they struggle. I thought Everton improved against Hull in the second-half last week and this will be a tight game, but I just fancy Everton. It's weird - if this game was at Goodison Park I'd give Villa more of a chance.

PAUL PREDICTS: 1-2

Lawro:

Aston Villa v Everton

Roberto Martinez has done a really good job at Everton since taking over in the summer. I hear from inside the camp that they are impressed by the way he coaches - that the sessions he puts on are very good.
After leaving Wigan, Martinez has gone to a bigger club and inherited better players collectively and individually, and he is keeping them at the level they were at. His transfer dealings, in and out, have been excellent too.

Aston Villa gave it a good go against Tottenham last weekend and Christian Benteke made a difference for them when he came on in the second half after his injury.
A lot depends on whether Benteke is fit enough to start on Saturday but, if he does play a significant part of the match, then my feeling is this one will be very close.
Lawro's prediction: 1-1

I hate the way they present the team out of order like that. Makes it tricky to work out the formation.

So it would be:

Howard; Coleman Jags Distin Baines; Mirallas McCarthy Barry Pienaar; Barkley; Lukaku

Quite apt that it is 150 years to the day since the formation of the FA, and here is the most played fixture in the English League calendar.

And I personally hate this fixture in terms of nerves, so want to beat Villa always, but very rarely do, even when we deserve to.

Just hope we put up a consistent display across both halves, and its a generally decent one. Hope the goals will come from that. Want to avoid a great one half / shitty the other type performance we have had in a few games, unless we happen to score 5 in the great one!

I believe that our best option if/when Lukaku is subbed off is to move Mirallas up top anyway.  Can bring in Kid Barca, Naismith, or even Oviedo (depending on circumstances).

I think we need Coleman to sit deeper than normal, and to ask McCarthy to favour the right hand side slightly to cover that ball down our right and also to supplement Mirallas/Coleman's threat, and then be a bit more composed and assured in the final third and we'll win this comfortably.

This is the best performance in attacking sense we've put together this season (apart from maybe Newcastle). We could have had three, although so could Villa to be fair. They're doing well on the counter but have no idea what to do when they've got the ball. If we wake up a bit to snuff out the danger on the counter we should be able to get a goal and win. There's also no way the game is going to stay at this pace for the 90, which should favour us.

Howard MOTM though, kept the game within reach with some of those saves early on, and Osman making the difference playing higher up the pitch.

The thing thats amazing about Martinez vs Moyes (other than the subs obviously) is when were ahead with Martinez we just sit on possession and then hit them on the counter, with Moyes we'd just clear the lines as soon as possible.

Best thing for me about today, apart from the supersub again, our game management once we went ahead. We did it against Hull last week, and the same again today. They didn't have a sniff after we took the lead, and that is massively encouraging.

I like how we keep the ball and draw them out a bit, we stay patient and wait for a good opportunity to speed up the play and create the chance.

Although we were helped by Lambert bringing on Helenius as it opened up more space in midfield for us.

Osman!

What a supersub ;)

Personally would have made the exact same sub. Barkley has been struggling and Osman is at his best playing off the striker. Honestly I think there is an argument for Osman to be starting in that position over Barkley (particularly given how poor Barkley has been over the last few games). But given that we would not want to shatter Barkley's confidence and the fact that Barkley gives us a bit more drive and impetuous I would continue starting Barkley and bringing Osie on if we need a change of pace.

I have to say that I am not convinced Barkley would have made that pass to Lukaku that Osman made.

Could see Barkley taking the ball on himself there. Impossible to know really but you can see that a different type of player changed the game and Osman may even get himself the start next week with Barkley possibly playing the substitute's role.

The last 20 was what possession football is all about! It's the most confident we've looked knocking it around like that so far and it will only help us become more accomplished at it for the future. Such a contrast from previous years where we would retreat to our own penalty area and hang on for dear life. Sure Villa dominated for a fair bit of the second half, but while they created a good number of opportunities in that time, none of them were particularly clear cut. We deserved the win. We're not picking up points where we used to drop them so the signs are really good!

Their penalty wasn't a pen either, he tripped himself up.

two players running close to each other, one falls over, free kick / penalty

much easier than actually looking at the incident or looking for if there was a foul or not, and referees in England choose the easy option every single time - hence so many penalties at Old Trafford and Anfield for the home side

We have Howard to thank for that victory. Superb save from Benteke's penalty and in the two 1-on-1 chances that Villa had inside the first half hour.

The players got lucky at other times too, but they weathered Villa's attacks well for the most part, and then pressed on for the win once they started to tire around the 70 minute mark. Great substitution by Martinez again, and Osman proving that a load of people on here and twitter spout absolute nonsense most of the time about him. Great intricate play between the triumvirate of him, Pienaar and Baines for Lukaku's goal, and then showing his experience by sidefooting home for his own goal.

Providing the squad continue to adapt to Martinez's approach to matches, and in matches, then we'll be well served for the vast majority of this campaign.

A lot of people's slag him off when he plays shit. Maybe rightly so. He's been shit for the most part this season. That could be because he's been played out if position or due to poor form.

Few doubts his qualities, it's just his inconsistency makes him an easy target.

Yes agreed. He does seem like a fairly sound bloke. I do think his reputation as one of the best young managers is a little undeserved though. Villa's style appears to basically involve playing a long ball up to Benteke on the counter, hope that he holds it up or flicks it on to either wing where they have pace on one side and a bit of skill on the other.

Tony Pulis has (rightly, in my view) been slaughtered for playing a style not so far removed.

Well, once again, I miss the key parts of the game. Saw the bulk of the game up until the 60th minute, then had to deal with some customers who looked like they were going to buy something. Kept me out there for over an hour then decided against it.

Came back in and the game was long over, but the score was frozen on my laptop. Aston Villa 0 Everton 2. Wtf? How did that happen. But thanks to NBC's excellent coverage I was at least able to replay the goals and to make my hour of wasted time worth it.

Osman has got great feet, one of the most comfortable players on the ball at the club and he changed the game yesterday. Does take a lot of shit from a lot of fans but we missed him until he came on. He is light weight and apart from his goal yesterday his finishing is pretty average, still an important player for us imo.
