Manchester United v Everton
Old Trafford (Capacity - 75, 811)
Wednesday 4th November 19:45
Premier League match 14

Manchester United's last 5 domestic matches 2013/2014:

Manchester United 4-0 Norwich - League Cup (Hernandez x2, Jones, Fabio)
Fulham 1-3 Manchester United (Valencia, Van Persie, Rooney)
Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal (Van Persie)
Cardiff City 2-2 Manchester United (Rooney, Evra)
Tottenham 2-2 Manchester United (Rooney x2)

Everton's last 5 domestic matches 2013/2014:

Aston Villa 0-2 Everton (Lukaku, Osman)
Everton 0-0 Tottenham
Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton
Everton 3-3 Liverpool (Mirallas, Lukaku x2)
Everton 4-0 Stoke (Deulofeu, Coleman, Oviedo, Lukaku)

Manchester United

Coming into this game off the back of a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane, Manchester United go into this game on an eleven game unbeaten run in all competitions. Recent performances have helped put right what had been a dismal start to the season from the champions and has just about avoided being Manchester United's worst ever start.

As you can see, the start to the season isn't anywhere near as important as how you end it. On two occasions in the past Manchester United have won the title after gaining 22 points at this stage during a 38 match season. It was always going to be difficult to live up to his predecessor but David Moyes appears to have steadied the ship somewhat after a turbulent start and he'll be looking to prevent Everton from their first win at Old Trafford since 1992.

Possible Line ups

Everton

Everton put in their performance of the season on Saturday as they demolished Stoke 4-0 at Goodison Park despite Leighton Baines, Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas being omitted from the starting line up. It was an outstanding team performance with Gerard Deulofeu and Steven Pienaar leading the way in a match which should have had more goals were it not for a great performance from Stoke goalkeeper, Asmir Begovic.

As you can see, that win has maintained the high standards set this term and has contributed to the second highest points tally Everton have had in the premier league at this stage of the season. Only in Everton's Premier League record finish season have they gained more points. Martinez will do well to keep up with the record given Everton have a trip to Arsenal to follow up a game at Old Trafford.

Martinez's record against Manchester United doesn't make positive reading having been thumped 4-0 and 5-0 numerous times. However given the gigantic gulf between the sides, perhaps he's due some leeway. Considering the gulf between Everton and Wigan, Martinez's record against David Moyes isn't too bad with just 4 defeats from 9.

Stats and Injuries

Everton have a couple of long term injuries in Arouna Kone and Darron Gibson who will both continue to be absent whilst Leighton Baines still has a few weeks to go before recovering from a foot injury. Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher are thought to be the only players missing from the Manchester United squad whilst Robin Van Persie is touch and go. Phil Jones picked up his fifth yellow card and is going to sit this one out.

This is set to be the 190th meeting between the two sides and David Moyes' first match against Everton since his departure.

Lets go there and attack this fairly average United side. They're midfield is there to be dominated, so lets do that from the start.

Can't see us losing this. Moyes will play for the draw. We are an Everton he won't recognize. We will harass and bully them and most likely play them off the park. My only worry is Fellaini will see Barry and think he is playing Man City. Also Rooney is in inspired form. Can't wait to best these

I'm expecting a decent showing here and our first win at OT on what has been far too long.

Haha I did notice that in the prediction thread we've gone from the Liverpool game where there was widespread pessimism to this game where nearly everyone thinks we're going to win.

Much like when Liverpool are below us everyone likes to go on about how incredibly shite these are. And while they might be a lot worse than in past seasons it's seemingly ignored that they're only 2 points behind us.

If this was Spurs (for example) everyone would be planning for a tough game. Not sure how the table would suggest otherwise.

As it happens I think we've got a chance in both of these games (maybe more in the Utd one as it's the first of the two so we'll be that bit fresher).

But City away showed what can also happen if we don't play well. Hopefully we've learned from what went wrong there and guard against it in these games.

I do think we've got the players to hit these teams on the break now though which is essential if you're going to catch them out at home. We've still been a bit too sloppy in our execution of breaks this season by again, you'd imagine that improving with time and experience as well.

id take two points from our next two away games. man u and arsenal our record isnt great atall, and they are both playing well more so the latter. but united at old trafford they are a diffrent side to away we need to stand up there more so now moyes is there! to think he wont rally his team against us  is a dangerous thing. its upto martinez to prepare us well for this.

Be honest I am confident at the moment simply because of the way we are playing. Add the factor that a lot of the players Moyes left yo go Man u, will I think want to prove him wrong. Especially a certain Ross Barkley who I think must start and who will be chomping at the bit to play.
I also think rightly or wrongly this is not one of the great United teams were playing and the only player I really fear now that Van Percey isn't playing is Rooney.

On the flip side Moyes will REALLY want to win this one.  Rooney and Van Persie can still destroy teams on their own.  A draw should still be seen as a good result, but I am more confident that we can beat them at Old Trafford than I've ever been

Rooney's definitely the one to fear. He seems to be playing pretty much a free role, and is dictating the play for them, often giving them another body in midfield, which is where I thought we might dominate them.

I thought they looked more fluid in midfield yesterday and had Spurs pinned back a lot, which Spurs did to us.

Going to be tough, but still winnable.

de Gea=Howard
Smalling/Coleman*
*Evra/Oviedo
Evans=Distin
Vidic=Jagielka
Cleverley/McCarthy*
*Valencia/Mirallas
Fellaini=Barry
*Rooney/Barkley
Kagawa/Pienaar*
Welbeck/Lukaku*

_____________________________ ______________

*Hernández/Jelavic
*Nani/Osman
Young/Deulofeu*

Probably get shot down for this, just looking at the likely starting line ups, (less sure about UTD's but swapped the suspended Jones for Fellaini). Placed a * next to who I'd rate the higher (down the middle if I think there's no clearly better player) also considered current form - Vidic has been below par for instance where as I thought Valencia has looked back to his best in recent week although Mirallas is coming into form also but Valencia still shaves it at present.

Think Utd have a stronger bench as you'd expect but I genuinely think those line ups are quite well matched. Its all on paper of course and I've done this before with Utd and watched us get crushed but hey-ho. :)

Still don't think we have anythign to fear. Barkley & Rooney will be really interesting to watch, Rooney's just untouchable at the moment though.

Looking at the best realistic scenario, it would be better to draw United and beat the Arseholes.  But eating Moyes and drawing or even losing to Arsenal would be immeasurably more satisfying, emotionally.

Classic head v. heart.  Good thing what we want has no bearing on what actually happens.

I'm not ruling anything out by the way.

Even just the optimism of "I haven't seen this approach fail yet" is preferable to not being optimistic at all.

I do genuinely think we can win at these places - but it's not going to be easy.

I think the optimism can be justified. They're on a good run results wise now, but in terms of performances they played well about 4 times since Moyes took over, mostly in the Champions League.

There's also the fact that unless they play 5 in the middle with Kagawa in the hole, they're a shapeless mess. A case in point would be against Spurs when they started really well in this line-up, but after Welbeck did his usual disappearing act Moyes tried to get him involved by swapping him with Kagawa to play next to Rooney. From then, they didn't look as fluid or threatening. On the other hand, that shapeless mess is likely to contain Rooney and RVP who can win the game from nothing.

I think we can impose our game on them and give it a good go. We'll give them a good game but it's by no means certain because of the two match winners they have.

Next two games are a very good opporunity to take stock of where we are and what we can achieve, the teams around us have lots of winnable games so we need something from them. Losing to City was no disgrace but Utd look fragile and their crowd knows it too. IF we score first I just hope we press for a second, just impose ourselves like we did at Goodison in the reverse fixture last year.

Martinez has passed his first test of maintaining the form we showed under Moyes, these 2 games though could really smash that glass ceiling we've struggled with for the last few years. Winning under RM at Old Trafford at the first attempt after years of failure...the belief it would give the squad would be massive.

Feeling very up for this!

I agree, to have any chance of staying above Utd at the end of the season (as unlikely as that may be) we need to see them in disarray for as long as possible. We're not catching Arsenal.

Never a better time to play them I think.
Utd have lost that 'invincibility' and have looked weak at times... However, never underestimate them.
The way we are playing we should fear nobody... Take the game to them and dominate their midfield... Lakuku to shake them up at the back and use our new found pace to get behind the fullbacks..

An interesting game for sure... I do fancy us tho!!

United cannot afford not to win on Wednesday. They're currently 9 behind Arsenal and 5 behind Chelsea, both of whom have winnable games at the same time. They've got to go to both grounds and can't see them overhauling both of them, never mind Chelsea.

The pressure on United will be immense and it's up to us to exploit it. Wonder if Martinez held Barkley back at the weekend so he can unleash him knowing that Barkley is likely to want to make a point against Moyes.

Will be tough, would like to think that now is the time to beat them but a draw would still be a good result. A win would make us certainly look like serious top 4 contenders.

I think it is still difficult to predict how well we will play coming off the stoke match but you'd think we'd be full of confidence.

Really looking forward to how our midfield comes up against theirs. It has the potential in my opinion to completely dominate their midfield, this is no doubt where manchester united are at their weakest.

Cleverly is an over rated piece of shite. It will be interesting to see if Moyes starts Fellaini for this game.

Generally believe we will win this, but the amount of times I have said that in the past has come back to haunt me, but like others have mentioned, no better time than now, due to the way we are playing, to turn them over.

They have looked incredibly ordinary at times this season, if we turn up and play the way we know we can this should be a stroll.

Love to see moyes face if we turn them over.

I remember a matchday thread three or four years ago, Blackburn first game of the season. There was various optimistic posts, Howard dropped a bollock and we lost 1-0. Let the relegation battle begin.

As said, we drew with what many consider an average Liverpool team, then humped what was a very poor Stoke team, so suddenly people think we're going to  beat Man Utd at Old Trafford, something we haven't done since God was a boy, and they're on something like a dozen games undefeated. It makes the meltdown all the more annoying should we lose the game.

It's logical to think that this is our best chance for 20 years for all the obvious reasons.

That's fair enough to be optimistic about the match.

As Gasher says though the subsequent meltdown is the worst part of when things don't go right.

3 games ago out midfield did nothing against Crystal Palace - why? Because we're still inconsistent. Nothing to fret over as that's the way it is.

Tough game as many have said, really do think we can get a result there for once though.
Need a big performance from Barry in particular to shut Rooney down and I'm hoping that the years spent training together will mean our centre backs have the measure of Fellaini.
Lukaku could be the difference here I think - will be a tough call to drop Barca kid too after the last game but think its a game for him to make an impact from the bench.

That's what I'd go for.

Osman turned the game around against Villa and was rewarded with a start against Spurs so I'm not so sure.

Excited for this.
I have a client in work who works for Barclays who has very kindly offered me tickets for this in a suite. Only issue is... I'm in with the Utd fans! So if we score and I cheer... I'm fucked.

In the museum suite, free drinks, food etc.
Hoping Martinez can bitchslap Moyes.

To think we will waltz in there and get a win is daft. I do think we can be optimistic in getting something out if the game, it's not like they are crushing all and sundry with their dazzling performances, they are a very ordinary Utd team with a couple of outstanding performers, one of which isn't playing right now.

It will be difficult, we will need our fair share of luck, but we can beat them there.

And I will fucking love it if we do, proper Keegan style love it.

We now have a manager and a number of players (Barkley, Lukaku, McCarthy, Oviedo, Barry for example) who don't have the mental scars and the inbuilt inferiority complex about going to Old Trafford and trying to play their football.

Allied to this, the superiority complex at Old Trafford has been diminished by the arrival of a new manager, some of the flaws in the team, the inability to completely dominate and dictate the play against apparently weaker teams.

Clearly they still have a lot of very good players, and regardless of these mental aspects I'm referring to, we could still be beaten by a team with very good players who score more goals than us. It should be fascinating. I just hope that our players express themselves and use the full force of their personalities to assert our style at Old Trafford.

The start will be very important (not to go a goal or two behind), and if we do take the lead we need to maintain that position and show that we have the character to dominate the game (which is where we came unstuck against City when we took the lead).

DECEMBER 3, 2013 BY DANIEL
When David Moyes makes the long walk down the Old Trafford tunnel on Wednesday evening he will step out on to the pitch to the warm applause of 72,000 supportive, yet slightly dubious Mancunians, who despite a string of improved results are still unsure of what to make of their new boss. But what will be the reaction of the travelling Everton contingent away to his right? Will he receive the acclaim his 11 year stint in charge of the Blues richly deserves, or will his disrespectful treatment of Everton since his departure result in a chorus of booing and jeering?

It is hard to argue with David Moyes’ impact at Everton. He took over a team who had become perennial relegation candidates and transformed them to an established top seven team, one who would regularly compete for a place in Europe and for one season upset the status quo and secure the coveted fourth place finish and a shot at the Champions League. During his time on Merseyside, Everton became the top team in Liverpool, finishing above the Reds in each of the last two campaigns, a quite unbelievable achievement when comparing financial resources. In a difficult economic time, Moyes brought stability to Goodison, enabling the Blues to progress, but disappointingly he was unable to end the trophy drought which has now extended to 19 years.

Despite leaving Everton in a far better position than when he arrived at the club, the opening months of the new season would suggest that Moyes outstayed his effectiveness at Goodison. The club had become stale, with Everton failing to make significant progress since 2008-09. That season Everton were incredibly unfortunate to lose in the FA Cup Final to Chelsea and finished a highly respectable fifth in the Premier League, however since that date at Wembley, the club have stagnated, finishing, eighth, seventh, seventh and sixth.

David Moyes adopted a very structured tactical approach, with each player knowing exactly what was expected of them on the football pitch. The players were and I am sure it is the same at Old Trafford, expected to follow the manager’s instructions to the letter. The great Dynamo Kiev manager, Valery Lobanovsky employed a football by numbers tactical approach, a theory endorsed by Moyes as he looked to control every element of his teams display. Moyes was very much the puppet master, with his players operating on strings.

In contrast, Roberto Martinez allows his players the freedom to express themselves. Football is to be enjoyed and his players are certainly playing with flair and exuberance. It is hard to imagine an Everton side featuring Barkley, Mirallas and Deulofeu would have ever taken to the field under the watchful and critical eye of Moyes. But Martinez is positively encouraging this approach, Everton retain the ball superbly, but can attack with pace and above all look to win every match. The Spaniards in-game management is exceptional and his ability to react to what is happening on the pitch in front of him has already earned Everton points that would have been lost previously (West Ham, Hull, Villa, Liverpool).

Under Moyes, Everton failed to win away at either Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool. The Blues would arrive at the grounds of the “Sky Four” and be beaten before they had stepped onto the pitch. The negativity stemmed from the top, with Moyes admitting that “You want to get out of Old Trafford alive, that was our saying.” That approach should never be accepted by a football club with a history as proud as Everton. Roberto Martinez has instantly recognised the need to change the player’s mentality.

“If you are going to be brave and try to win games rather than just being in a position where you want to keep a clean sheet and get through in damage-limitation situations, then you need to be flexible as a player and as a team and play in different ways in the modern game. That is the attitude we have had from the beginning. We have had one defeat in 13.

“It is the next test and the next challenge is can we go to the big places like the Old Trafford, the Emirates, Anfield and Stamford Bridge and get wins? That is not going to happen overnight. Probably on Wednesday will be the first step towards achieving that.”

On his appointment at Old Trafford, David Moyes was praised for his handling of young players. Wayne Rooney, James Vaughan, Victor Anichebe and Jack Rodwell were all given opportunities to establish themselves as first team players during Moyes tenure in charge, but he certainly lost faith in young players as his Everton career progressed. Ross Barkley is an exceptional talent, but rather than encourage the teenager, Barkley was publicly chastised for making a mistake at Blackburn and very rarely appeared in the team again during Moyes’ remaining two years at the club. If Everton are to progress, it is players like Barkley who must be encouraged. Roberto Martinez instantly recognised that and has put his faith in the young Evertonian, accepting that on occasions he will make a mistake, but knowing the return will far outweigh the level of risk.

David Moyes’ public comments and levels of hypocrisy since leaving the club have upset many, but he did enough in his time at Everton to earn the respect of every Blue. Martinez has been keen to downplay any bad feeling towards his predecessor in his press conference this week, explaining that Moyes’ actions in the summer were not out-of-place in the footballing world.

“I also think it’s fair that every Evertonian should have their own view and opinion about how things did develop. If you are asking me, then it’s only praise for what David Moyes did for Everton. To have such a long servant, who always had the good decision for Everton at heart, should not be forgotten.”

I fear the overwhelming feeling towards Moyes will be one of resentment and I understand that. I have used this platform to direct my anger at the former Everton manager since his departure, but I believe he deserves a warm round of applause from the Everton support before his team are played off the pitch by Martinez’ new and improved Everton.

I was always a big supporter of David Moyes and I was devastated by his departure to Old Trafford, but on reflection and having had opportunity to experience the early days of the Martinez era, I would argue that Moyes should have left Everton much earlier. By the end of the 2008-09 season he had achieved all he was capable of at Everton and a fresh approach was required to take the club forward. We certainly have the right man in charge for the next stage in the clubs evolution and Everton, whatever the result on Wednesday night will go on to bigger and better things under Roberto Martinez.

That is exactly when he should have left imo. After that season, it just didn't feel the same. That was our peak with Moyes.

However, had he left then, I doubt we'd have had Martinez now. So look on those lost seasons after as purgatory waiting for the gates to open...

Manchester United boss David Moyes: "I had a great time at Everton, they were fabulous to me. Overall we had a level of consistency.

"I think it will be a mixed reception tomorrow night. The Everton fans understand their football and I think they'll understand I brought in a lot of good players there."

On Martinez: "He is doing a very good job. He has very good players there. I always told them they could play without a manager because they are very well organised. But Roberto is doing a really good job keeping it going."

Lawrenson:

Manchester United manager David Moyes goes up against his former club and his current side are in pretty good shape, on the back of a 12-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
This game is at Old Trafford too and, as competitive as Everton will be under Roberto Martinez, I still fancy United to win this one.

Everton have lost only one league game all season and they deserve nothing but plaudits but that defeat came when they went to Manchester City and found them a little bit too hard to handle.

United are not in City's class at the moment but I still think they will have enough to beat the Toffees.

Lawro's prediction: 2-0

Merson:

Man Utd v Everton

I'd expect Arsenal to beat Hull - and so will everyone in the country, bar Hull fans - so United, who are nine points behind now, if they don't win this one, can't catch them. I really can't see them catching them if that happens. They have to match Arsenal until Arsenal play Man City and Chelsea in a couple of weeks.

This is a must-win game for United but I think it'll be a draw. I watched the Everton game on Soccer Saturday and Gerard Deulofeu was very impressive. United will have to be careful because this will be quite an open game, with the way United play, and he can run with the ball. Romelu Lukaku has got pace, too, so this is a hard game for the hosts. The more the game opens up it brings Lukaku into the game and Everton keep the ball well.

PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1

The press around Martinez playing with a freedom and expression that Moyes never encouraged.. I would imagine that must wrankle with him, especially as similar press is suggesting he has carried that caution with him to Old Trafford.

So I don't see any need to go gung-ho at them tomorrow, Utd at home will be expected to attack, have the majority of possesion and pin Everton back, we will need to be effective at playing a passing game in our own half with pressing utd players snapping at the man on the ball and closing down options. If we can handle that there should be plenty of space in behind to counter quickly but we have to earn the right to attack. Lukaku will also have to be effective at collecting the ball and letting us advance up the pitch, I think thats the one area that could be key tomorrow, if he can collect it hold a couple of seconds and offload it to Pienaar Barkley or Mirallas quickly we can break very quickly I'm sure. Fellaini will be sitting deep and recycling possesion to so he needs to press him and rush the pass, don't want to see Lukaku sat on the centre backs and letting Fellaini have an easy time of it, he needs to put a shift in tomorrow.

think this is a bit harsh

moyes did progress us quite a bit from where we were when he took over and got us to a sustainable situation with a core of quality players, just never broke through the barrier convincingly to the point where we were in the top 4

its all a progression IMO, without moyes, roberto wouldn't be able to tweak the style a bit and make modest personnel changes that would influence our quality

if roberto ends up being a longterm success, the place where credit is due really has to be the board, and I'm no professed lover of them

but where we are at the moment is 5th place with a mix of expected wins, a couple of good wins and draws, some early dissapointing results and a drubbing of stoke

win this match and maybe some euphoria is warranted but it won't be easy since utd are playing much much better than at the outset of the season

Okay just a couple of things regarding Moyes. What he's said isnt completely wrong, Moyes had us being one of the most organized outfits in the league. Its obvious he isnt going to be overly complimentary of Martinez, why would he?. He would look silly if he claims Martinez is doing a better job with us than he did, its kind of like the way you want your ex to get with someone worse than you.

I wasn't a fan of Moyes at all for the last couple of years, things went very stale. But its worth remembering some of the football we was playing around the time of the UEFA seasons was brilliant. Some people are quick to forget that

To have gotten us to the Champs League, and to have kept us in the Top 6/7 for so long is still a remarkable achievement, regardless of how tactlessly he's behaved recently.
am with you bd in what he did for the club an the manner he did it and behaved. Thats what makes the comments and the way he as acted since leaving harder to take/understand for me

The Peoples Club/CL football etc and the fact he genuinely loved being at Everton won me over but the bubble burst for me during the semi v the shite, the dithering & the contract crapola. I'm happy him and his coaching staff are probably losing sleep because they play us tomorrow and not the other way around. If you know what I mean like.

I'm very much in the 'people are getting a bit carried away with slagging Moyes off' camp.

This keeps getting thrown around here and I still don't buy it.

I know you're fairly new to the site mate, so maybe don't have a handle on who had what opinion on him, so that's fair enough. There is the odd minority that were supporters of Moyes and are now critical of him, in fairness mainly due to what happened in the run up to and after he left. Other than that, the people who tended to support him still do and the people who were always critical still are, and I respect both sides for sticking to their opinion.

Cheers for the info. I've got an idea with a few people because the arguments still seem to crop up in different threads, but you're right, I don't know who thinks/thought what re: Moyes on the whole.

I was always a massive Moyes supporter, and I've had to really adjust my long held opinions since he left, because of his actions and his comments. It's not been easy, because I genuinely thought more of him as a man. So I suppose what I'm saying is that I'm surprised that both sides of the pro-Moyes/anti-Moyes debate 'are sticking to their argument' as you say.

I do think the people who have always been anti-Moyes are perhaps still going a bit too far with some of their comments.

That's part of the point, their comments have generally been pretty consistent. I don't think there's much that's gone to far, it's not like anyone's wishing harm to him, at worst they want him to fail. Between you and me, they wanted that for him here as well so that they can say "I told you so" but don't tell anyone I said that.  ;)

I remember someone having a go at Les Trebilcock for his opinion, in reality it was pretty much the same thing Les had said for the last few years. People just seem to have become a bit more aware/sensitive to it since Moyes left.

I was always torn on Moyes.

Loved the spirit he crafted and the effort and belief he demanded from his players; The Moyes toothy smile and maniacal fist pump was impossible not to love.

The respectful rhetoric and demeanor that he displayed, gave us back that veneer of class that we had been lacking since Joe Royle.

The playing style was often not to my taste though.

I rarely felt comfortable in a game when he was manager, we often seemed to invite pressure.

Too many high balls to Cahill and then Fellaini turned possession into a hit and miss lottery.

However, the overriding feeling is one of pride that we had him.

Two poignant, yet fairly base banners that were held up at the match after Rooney left read: ' We hate you so much, because we loved you so much' and 'You could have been a God but you chose to be a devil'

Similar could be written of Moyes.

Moyes would never have been a God here. I don't think he has the mentality for it. He doesn't seem to be a winner like Rooney is. Too cautious maybe?

Found this and think if I was a manager I would reenact it for my team :)

I've called him a bottler for years to be honest, because he is one

he is along the same lines as Gordon Lee, but without the charisma ;)

won nothing, had some good results, signed some excellent players, but in 20 years will be remembered as the man who managed us before Martinez took over

Or without the ability to spend (or inherit) British record transfer fees.

We were also terrible in the last year(s) of Gordon Lee so less of a platform for Howie to build on...

I don't know what people expected from Moyes when he left. He's in a new job so has complete loyalty to Man Utd. Fellaini was always going to leave as well, and he owes a lot of his development to Moyes.

Whatever has happened since Moyes left hasn't damaged the respect I have for what he did at our club, he was a good servant.

I'm just glad we seem to be on the up under Martinez.

Although I do feel that the grudges held by some fans will make for a fantastic atmosphere tonight... So I fully endorse it 😏

Not sure toe to toe is the best approach as they have better forwards, overall.

Controlled possession and looking to hit on the break in good numbers would be my preferred option.

I liked Moyes when he was here, and didn't blame him for taking the Manure job.

That said, there is absolutely NO reason for him to be anything other than gracious in his comments about EFC and RM, going forward.  It doesn't benefit his current employer one iota, in my view.  It just makes him look like a small, petty man.  Which is particularly galling, given the sendoff he received in his last home game here.

I guess we'll get an idea of Moyes' class and dignity if Utd score against us.

Who cares? He's not our manager, he's Man Utd's he's hardly going to run the length of the pitch and slide on his knees. If he celebrates I couldn't give a fuck, I doubt he'll have a big celebration anyway.

Nothing to fear from their midfield line up though.

We don't tend to like teams which close us down real fast. So with Giggs and Fellaini in the centre, they wont be the ones really pressing a lot and that would help us.

For us we need to shut down the threat of Rooney. I would unleash McCarthy on him so that he keeps Rooney under control. Scoring 1st would be important in this game. They would try to shut us down if they score 1st.

Nemanja Vidic is not often bullied, but he's getting torn apart by Romelu Lukaku so far this evening. The Belgian is too big, too strong and to quick for the aging Manchester United centre-back. Everton remain a real threat on the counter-attack. BBC

Disagree mate. Osman offers absolutely nothing to our team going forward or defensively. Barkley has been involved in most of our play going forward, he's just failed to deliver the right pass too often but we know he's capable of it and who's to say it wont start coming off for him 2nd half.

Felli has been put in their midfield with the intention of stopping him, therefore we've already put them on the back foot. Barry's passing has been excellent, Giggs hardly in the game, only Kagawa has looked threatening for them going forward.

Deulofeu's pace would cause a 40 yr old Giggs and a 3 toed sloth paced Felli nightmares though.

I thought Barkley would be well up for this because (a) he's a fearless bastard and (b) he probably has a point to prove against Moyes. As it stands he looks overawed.

But there advantages and disadvantages to him being in the team. Sure Osman would have made a better pass, but with his lack of pace he wouldn't have been able to carry the ball as far in the first place. Barkley helps our counter-attacking.

My only defence for Fellaini there is that he was lucky he got McCarthy or it would have been the same tackle the other way around, as some have said though it probably would have been a red if he played for us but lets not forget how much shit he got away with for us as well.

Quote of the week from Robbie sheepshead Savage:

"The change of formation in the second half to a 4-4-2 has really helped Manchester United. Adnan Januzaj has looked exceptional since he came on, and if there is going to be a winner, it will be the home side."

"Everton's supporters serenade Manchester United manager David Moyes with a blast of "Getting Sacked In The Morning" but reserve all the real adulation for new manager Roberto Martinez and his players. Thought the ref did about as well as we can expect at Old Trafford. Let a lot of the big stuff go, another ref could've given a soft penalty for one of their flops. He did get a bit more whistle happy during the second half but particularly in the first I thought he did very well and the game was better for it.

"As an away team, you normally feel you will have only one or two chances maximum. But with our ambition, we created many, many chances.

"If you look at the overall position we deserved all three points and that is an incredible statement."

He could've easily given two or three penalties against us. None of them would've been fair but they were the sort of situations United usually got something from referees in days past.

Here's a nice little summary from the Guardian's live blog at the end of the game:

''Well, the first thing to say is that Everton played very well indeed. United created the better chances on account of having the better attackers, but it was Everton who played the better and more enterprising football, on account of being a team and having a midfield. And, when the chance did arrive, it was taken with minimum fuss and maximum prejudice; they are already a good outfit, and have the makings of a very good outfit''.

What I find incredibly funny is that by and large, Moyes has got it right tonight. He put out the best team available, he tried to play Kagawa in his best position, they had numerous big chances while we didn't create a clear cut opening until Deulofeu's run, he made good attacking subs... and still lost. :)

With my heart I wouldn't swap Barkley for anyone and for exactly the reasons you're saying. You know me, I'm a traditionalist and I think it's very important to have a solid backbone of local players.

The comparison was made simply on the basis of which positions they are better man-for-man, and apart from Rooney and Kagawa I couldn't really say any where theirs trumps ours.

DID that brilliantly, before he joined United

True, getting him shifted out on the left was idiotic from Fergie and now there's so little movement ahead of him that he hasn't got much to work with. But you don't forget how to do it.

Just delighted for Oviedo. Scared the missus shitless and woke the kids when we scored. Some of the play out of defence was brilliant, always an outball, no easy option ball. Jags is showing so much more on the ball.

Barry was just on another level too. Fuck it they all were. What a buzz.

Being on Yank time, didn't wake anyone.  But scared the shit out of all three daughters, though.  The soccer playing one understood the likely reason.

I had to DVR the last 20 minutes, hated not being here live, and just caught up with all the comments.  I couldn't be more thrilled.

That game will stay in the DVR until it fries and I have to replace it.  Any of you lads or Lizz ever in NC for some random reason, stop by and raise a pint and watch Oviedo make history again.

From the BBC.

Quote
Everton manager Roberto Martinez praises his team's 'outstanding performance' after Everton beat Manchester United at home for the first time in 21 years.

Spaniard Bryan Oviedo scored the only goal of the game in the 86th minute to beat his former manager David Moyes.

The former Everton boss had failed to win at old Trafford in his his 11 years in charge of the club.

Not ashamed to admit I got a tad bit emotional when the final whistle went. For all those years of going there and taking either heavy beatings, poxy beatings or nicking draws leaving me depressed, angry or thankful, tonight was fucking glorious. Every single player was a hero on the pitch, led by a lion heart in Jags and a Spanish god in Roberto. Bring on Wenger and his Gunners on Sunday, we have nothing to fear now. 21 years without a win at OT smashed, now to end 17 years of pain in North London

Alright lads just got back from the game.

I was in the Museum Suite in the Manchester end. Champagne and Canapes on arrival. Fantastic buffet dinner with complimentary alcohol/soft drinks.
Got a free match program, a free United diary with Everton vs United and todays date engraved onto the front
a printed copy of the team sheet.

Watched the game in the Sir Alex stand in the hospitality section.. was surprisingly a lot more Everton fans than expected considering me and my brother had sworn to try and stay incognito but there was a few blues being very loud.
One Sikh guy stood up jumping up and down having a fit like a kid in toys r us because our player didn't get sent off and the guy right behind him was a blue and screamed 'sit down you fucking useless fuck'

Anyway, great game.
After the game it was back to the suite for more food and free beer.
The table we was on was 4 blues and 2 reds..
The reds just sat on their phones reading Facebook!

Can upload pics of the evening if anyone wants. Fantastic service. 10/10 for the staff at OT.

Oh and I must mention.. I won £91 in bets! Everton to win and a goal to be scored after 81st min.
One of the best nights of my 21 year old life.

Yes I'm slightly drunk. Too many singhas. Cheers lads.

Will Bainsey want to go to Utd in January now ? We are the better team at the moment so at his age will he want to take a step backwards in a World Cup year ;)  .. We've already got a more than capable replacement in Oviedo who was signed by Moyes, our bargaining power is massive, not far off enough to finance a deal for Romelu .... That is brilliant Liz.  I saw that on the TV.  I feared a Utd comeback until I saw how comfortably we were taking the ball, passing it around and when under pressure, at worst lumping it to the opposition corner.  The players ALWAYS seem to have Robby's plan in mind!

And IMO, if United don't get players in January and fail to make the top 4, they'll struggle to lure anyone in the summer too.
I think they need midfielders, not backs, and If Baines does go City could be a bigger threat.

Here's a headache. If you were RM and Baines was fit for the Arsenal match, do you drop Oviedo after his last two games? That is a sign of how far we have come in the past two months.

If it was me Oviedo has earned his place to play at the Emirates, and Baines shouldn't be rushed back anyhow, give him a well deserved break, ok put him on the bench just in case, but for me Oviedo has to start.

As frustrating as he was at times with his tactics, our fans sung his name to the very end, as much as it hurt most of them. The final game his name was sung for almost the entire 90 minutes. Then the truth finally crept out about how the vacant managerial position was already his before half of our games were played.

So fuckin' ram it Dave.

Really the best thing Moyes can do is shut up and get on with it.  We gave him a heroes send off, he responded by trying to unsettle our players and putting in 'derisory and insulting' bids for them and taking a sly dig at Roberto in his pre match interview.  That probably fired Martinez up even more to go to United and get all 3 points.

While I am grateful for the job he did with us, he should not see 11 trophy-less seasons as a success.  The same feat will not be allowed to happen for him at United.

The time for talking has stopped, David.

If you can get anywhere near the same level of camaraderie and belief in that Manchester United squad that we have in our squad, you will have done extremely well.  We've replaced you with a better manager and a better man.  We are currently playing better football than at any stage of the past 11 years.  co-incidence?I doubt it

I'm not sure what he expects? Getting his new employer to put a bid in for our best player while still technically under contract to us probably isn't going to be the most popular move. And that was just the start of his shit.

Not sure how you can say it's both sides.. Moyes was given a hero's send off when he left... then the truth came out.
That was of his own doing, so the fact it may have hurt him I doubt, as he's "not an emotional man" and has divorced himself from the club etc etc etc...
So, suck it up Moyes... You reap what you sow..

Now, Goodison could be upsetting for him..... and I don't mean us doing the double on them.
