Everton v Lille OSC
Goodison Park
Thursday 6th November 20:05
Europa League Group Match #4

Everton - Last 5 Matches

Manchester United 2-1 Everton (Naismith)
Everton 3-0 Aston Villa (Jagielka, Lukaku, Coleman)
Lille 0-0 Everton - Europa League
Burnley 1-3 Everton (Eto'o x2, Lukaku)
Everton 0-0 Swansea

Lille - Last 5 Matches

Lyon 3-0 Lille
Lille 1-2 Guingamp (Mavuba)
Lille 0-0 Everton - Europa League
Rennes 2-0 Lille
Lille 1-1 St Etienne (Frey)

Everton

Should Wolfsburg beat Krasnodar as expected (or draw), Everton will have the chance to open up a 5 point gap over third place with a couple of matches to spare. Everton have gone 4 matches since defeat including a couple of 0-0 draws.  Everton's 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture was their first goalless draw in a European fixture for 29 matches, stretching back to 1995. Romelu Lukaku is yet to score in the Europa League for Everton but is the youngest player (16 Years 218 Days) to score in this competition since the change of format with a couple of goals for Anderlecht in a 3-1 win away to Ajax in December 2009.

This match is likely to feature two of the brightest prospects in Belgian football as Divock Origi and Romelu Lukaku each notched a goal in the World Cup for Marc Wilmot's side and as the stats show, they've been pretty similar this season. At the same age, Lukaku had scored 37 goals in the Belgian Pro League and 5 Premier League goals. By comparison, Divock Origi has 9 goals in Ligue 1. Origi has scored 2 of his 4 goals this season from the penalty spot.

Possible Line ups

(http://i.picresize.com/images/2014/11/04/XRZcl.png) (http://i.picresize.com/images/2014/11/04/TApk5.png)

Lille

Lille have now gone 6 matches without a win in all competitions (D3 L3) following their 1-1 draw at home to St Etienne at the weekend. Their 2-0 loss to Rennes resulted in their third away defeat in a row in Ligue 1 and the French side have only won one match away from home in all competitions this season (W1 D2 L3) and that came on the second weekend of the new season. Lille have scored just 11 goals in 15 matches this season.

Lille have been one of the most negative sides in Ligue 1 this season. No team have scored fewer goals (9) in the opening 12 matches of the season and only two sides have conceded fewer goals (10) this season. Although Lille seem to be able to compete with Everton in terms of creating chances and shots on goal, their conversion rate and percentage of shots on target would suggest Everton are able to provide better goal scoring opportunities.

Stats and Injuries

Everton - Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kone are expected to be fully fit after the international break. Defensive duo John Stones and Antolin Alcaraz aren't expected to be back any time soon whilst Kevin Mirallas is close to a return.

Lille - Lille will be without Ronny Lopes and probably some other people.

Hoping Atsu starts. Think his pace will be a big asset.

Yes.  I like what I've seen in Atsu so far.  He is raw and makes mistakes, but the same can be said of Barkley.  The talent is there.

Not gonna' be a world beater but looks as though he could change a key match for us sometime.
Title: Re: Everton v Lille
Post by: Evertonian in NC on November 06, 2014, 07:09:44 AM
Agreed, use Atsu's speed to break them down.  Another nil-nil draw and there will be massive pressure on the last 2 group fixtures.

Plus we need a watchable game after the trip to France and last weekend's abortion with Swans.
Title: Re: Everton v Lille
Post by: Shogun on November 06, 2014, 07:19:25 AM
Atsu has definitely come under harsh criticism, just not quite ready for the intensity of the Premier League yet and Martinez has recognised that.

I'm sure there's more to come, he didn't win player of the season at Vitesse for nothing.

Wolfsburg have sold out of all but the upper home end. I suspect  we've bought quite a few in the rest of the ground. It'll be interesting to see if they'll sell tickets in the home end to UK addresses!

My Daughter's first game Thursday, she's taxed her Brother's season ticket for this. Her Bro's first game was the 1-0 United game (Fellaini), let's hope she brings similar luck on her debut.

                                  Howard
Coleman         Jags                 Browning       Baines

                     Gibson          McCarthy

Atsu                         Barkley                  Piennar

                              Lukaku

If Distin is back, I wonder if he could handle Thurs/Sunday and I think Sunderland away might offer more of a threat than Lille with the way they are playing.

Lille need the points desperately do should come and attack us. We should be solid at the back and hit them on the break. Atsu would be a good shout because of his pace.

If he didn't rotate things people would no doubt moan their tits off in March if the team looks knackered and say Martinez should have used the squad more in Europe.

The likes of Barkley and Pienaar are just getting back from injuries and should be nursed back slowly. I'd rather they were given 20 minutes and at the end rather than thrown in for 60-70 minutes tonight when they're not fully fit. Especially Pienaar who seems to be struggling a bit to get up to fitness again.

"The nice thing about being a pessimist is that you are constantly being pleasantly surprised or proven right." - George Will

Usually I'm pretty optimistic with respect to Everton.  But I think the last fixtures in the Prem and Europa merited some extra speed and creativity on the pitch for this VERY important match.

Hibberts left it a bit late but hes actually becoming a good footballer. I mean pass and move as well as defending. Thought he was terrible against Liverpool. Not done too bad there have we.

Cracking saves from their keeper from Lukaku and Naismith, both where going in but he got a good arm on them out of instinct really.

Get a goal in the first 15 mins of the second half to kill it off would be rather nice, then give the others a go.

Impressed with our first half performance, we look very assured and managed to cause a few problems to the Lille defence. Everyone in the team has done pretty well and it's nice to see us score from a corner for once!

Are we really playing the team that finished 3rd in the French Ligue 1 last season? Expected a bit more from them to be honest. As long as we are not complacent in this half and Krasnodar don't win in the other game then I think we will pretty much seal a top half finish in this group.

I think Im harshly treated (not that I care) Just want the effort from Lukaku. Hes gonna misplace passes and miss headers. Just want him involved more than he has been. but 5 or 6 times his lay offs have been great.

i think that's basically what we've got with him at the moment, he is inconsistent with his hold up play, but he's got it in him.
im not criticising him, hes got it in him to be world class, sometimes he just switches off at the wrong times, maybe its not lazy maybe he just needs to focus a little more. need him to get a few goals to boost him up and then we will see the lukaku of last season

On Lukaku s touch, I think he lacks confidence. It's not lazy. Some have come off brilliantly, some have been annoying. Let's back the lad and hope he gets a goal in the second half

I am so irritated by reading ppl having a go at Lukaku in every single match. He is our joint top scorer with Naismith who everybody says is having a fantastic season - but Lukaku doesn't have the touch etc.

Well, take a look at our first goal - what a fuckn massive touch he has there. His touch opens up Lille like a little c**t and we score!

I love Lukaku and i love that Everton actually have such a massive guy like him upfront - together with Samuel! Sometimes I wonder if ppl actually are longing for the days with Brett Angel...crazy

Hibberts left it a bit late but hes actually becoming a good footballer. I mean pass and move as well as defending. Thought he was terrible against Liverpool. Most disagreed but I thought he bottled taking on sterling and stayed clear. Since then though hes been good. Solid defensively and while not quite Coleman hes been decent in possession too

He has learned a lot from Coleman ;)

i agree this happens. worth a thread on it's own, but i think it's probably more psychological/subconscious than conscious, overt racism.

like how andy carrol gets compared to big dunc - big stringy white guy who heads the ball, sanchez to suarez, low-centre of gravity sudamericano etc. etc.

Very convincing win tonight, great team performance with perhaps McCarthy being MOTM for timely interceptions and snuffing out so many possible Lille counterattacks. With Wolfsburg winning as well we are pretty much through to the next round unless Lille win their remaining 2 games and we lose the next 2, but I think Krasnodar will see a very different Everton side to the one that played in Russia last month.

My biggest plus (and plenty to choose from) was Lukaku. Build up play and link play were excellent, weight of pass and decision making were also mostly excellent.

You could see a huge difference in him now that he's not carrying an injury - his movement, touch and the way he held the ball. Buzzing for him.

Hadn't expected the MoM vote to be so one sided, but understandable why.

McCarthy was quite unbelievable for much of the game. On a performance like this, I'm tempted to say any ideas about him needing to be more effective going forward are incredibly wide of the mark.

I'd like him to add assists and maybe goals to his repertoire, but in a great team, he only does his job and he does that unbelievably well.

Lukaku was great. Had about two poor touches. And what?

Baines bossed it. That Scholes-esque chipped pass to Naismith to put him through? He could play centre midfield piece of piss.

McCarthy was ridiculous! I swear at least once a game we take a corner, the opposition wins the second ball and breaks only for Big James to sprint 60 yards to win a tackle and shut it down. They offered nothing because he snuffed it all out.

Lukaku a millimeter from his deserved goal right there.  We just look fantastic today.  No idea how to single any one man out.

I can easily single out Atsu for being a bit... no, I'll stick with the positivity. ;)

They weren't quite as up for it as we were, but - mistakes aside - they're still half-decent at the back, we've put four past them by mixing it up a bit and being very lively going forward.

I'm happy with that performance, and confident we'll finish top, unbeaten.

Fuck Atsu off though! *runs*

Gutted for Lukaku not getting on the scoresheet, his second "goal" should have stood from what I made of it. His performance and movement on and off the ball were very good and were worthy of a goal in itself.

Would love to go deep into this comp, have a 2nd leg Semi at Goodison with it all in the balance against a quality side. What an atmosphere that would be.

It would be great to make a deep run.  Unlike the Cups, I can visualize us winning this.

Oh, and "Group of Death" our collective, hairy blue arse.  Piece of piss, it is!

Lukaku doesn't half remind of anichebe, if he improves his hold up play and carries on not scoring goals
We will have anichebe the second, cant wait.

On a side note, as I said earlier, my Daughter's first game tonight (not counting the U-21's against Man United) and she loved it, even get into the swing of things banging her feet on the Bullens floor! She wasn't impressed with the Oak though, have to try her with the County @Eddie (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=3296)

I am glad I went to the game but it was pretty awful to watch. Lille were terrible and Everton decided to settle for a policy of killing the game and then spend most of the game passing backwards and sideways. It drove the big Everton crowd into silence for long spells. Obviously the knock out stage will be entirely competitive and exciting unlike this game. Really delighted to see Gibson back who went forward at every opportunity and passed really well. The game brightened up when he came on. I can see what Martinez meant when he said Atsu will not be ready for the premiership until next year. He was awful with nothing promising about him. We must have local youngsters far better than him. Job done. I noticed hundreds from the entertainment block in the main stand never returned to watch the second half. Maybe the free grub was a better choice.

Ah, I see we're getting into the "he can't do keep ups" debate again.

Their left back with his short shorts and tight ass creased me up. As well as their other midget in midfield who at least had a personality. Their fans were few but they were ok. Their rendition of Allez-oh quickly was drowned out by our version which was also quite funny.

His corners are consistently better than Baines for me.

Being in complete control of a game is difficult for us to come to terms with . I couldn't think of  too many games under Moyes where we could just see out 45 mins by just stroking it around . I don't really get it myself as I would always prefer to win 5-0 than 3-0 .

Gibson looking fit sound and spraying quality balls around was a big plus for me. A few on here mentioned earlier Barry must be knackered, AKA fucked. He got a knock and that may be a good opportunity to give him the break he possibly needs. A fully fit firing Gibbo is a decent replacement/stand in for Barry. And who knows? He might even give him a run for his first team place. Gibson looked good last night and it will take some of the pressure and expectation that's been on Barrys shoulders since the start of the season. Step up to the plate Gibbo.

he did look good, but if I was in that role last night for the last half an hour i would have looked the same.

zero pressure on him, just stroke it about etc.

Barry can do that and more in much more different atmospheres.

Gibbo is an understudy and a good one, but he's not the answer to when barry goes.

I thought it looked less full than Wolfsburg which was listed at 29k :eh:

He's not a direct replacement (but probably the closest we have if pushed) - his range of passing is more direct but is obviously less of a defensive shield.

I doubt Gibson is in the same class as Barry as most do. He's never really had much of a chance to play under Martinezs' *tutelage* though. How many games has he played just out of interest. Not that many. The point I'm trying to make is he looked strong and fully fit. I don't think I've seen him in that condition since he's been here. I've got my hopes up really. :)

I like him. Remember when we were unbeaten with Gibbo in the side and he seemed to be our most important midfield player? And when he got injured folk lost the plot?

Barry is better (I know I used to slate him at Man City - but I'm a dick, so what?) but I'm confident Gibbo can take over seamlessly when he's out. It's nice to be able to say that about such an important player as Barry.

I can't remember how good Gibson is in tight situations but Barry is very good in them. Good feet. Gibson generally seems more purposeful and incisive in his passing and is probably the best long passer in the team.

With another clean sheet, it means that we have only conceded one goal in the last 5 games - and to think over a month ago Howard was picking the ball up from the back of his net for fun.
