Everton FC v Tottenham Hotspur
Goodison Park
Sunday 24th May 15:00
Premier League Match #38

Everton - Last Five Matches

Everton 1-0 Burnley (Mirallas)
Everton 3-0 Manchester United (McCarthy, Stones, Mirallas)
Aston Villa 3-2 Everton (Lukaku Pen, Jagielka)
Everton 0-2 Sunderland
West Ham 1-2 Everton (Osman, Lukaku)

Tottenham - Last Five Matches

Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham (Chadli, Eriksen, Kane)
Southampton 2-2 Tottenham (Lamela, Chadli)
Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City
Stoke City 3-0 Tottenham
Tottenham 2-0 Hull City (Chadli, Rose)

Everton

Everton came from behind  to win a match for the first time this season after beating West Ham in the final away match of the season which lifted them up to 5th in the form table with 10 points from a possible 18. Everton's record to Tottenham Hotspur has been strong in recent years as they are unbeaten in their last seven matches against Spurs at Goodison park (W3, D4) although they have lost twice in a row to the North London outfit for the first time since 2006. Everton have won six of their last seven final day fixtures including their last four home matches. Everton have won only twice in 17 matches against top half teams this season which both came recently with wins over Southampton and Man United at home. The Toffees have taken 12 points from these fixtures which is comfortably worse than any other top half team (Southampton are second last with 18 points).

Possible Line ups

Tottenham Hostspur

Tottenham are one of the few teams with something to play for on the final day as they could still find themselves in 7th place which would leave them vulnerable for a European place, though I'm not sure Pochettino would cry himself to sleep if they missed out. Tottenham have only won on one of their away trips to a top half team this season and that was as a result of a 90th minute winner from Christian Eriksen away to Swansea. Tottenham have won each of their last four final day fixtures which is the current longest of any premier league side but Harry Kane has now gone four matches without scoring which is his longest drought since October. Roberto Soldado has scored one premier league goal this season, it came in the reverse fixture.

Amazing how we've won more games in the old league, yet our gd is inferior. Guess that 10-4 defeat didn't help.

With our recent upturn in home form vs Spurs I'd forgotten just how incredibly bad our PL record is against them.

Big Up to the Undercover Mod for all his hard work getting this stuff to the great unwashed. Ta la.

Think this match will unfold like the Jelavic injury time heroics of a few years past with Kane being the scorer and missing a pen - or we'll twat them 3-1. Jags MOM with a rocket launcher.

So a one goal win cements just how average our season has been.  13W / 11D / 14L and a level goal difference with a finish in 10th place is the definition of mid-table.

Cheers for the match previews @Shogun (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=1108). You always manage to come up with an interesting little titbit or two. Think you may have prepared for each game more than some of the lads wearing the shirts some days...

Losing more games than we've won is an utterly shite statistic.

And not good enough.

No Garbutt tomorrow

Or ever.

Is he injured or something?

If he goes, he goes, I'm not overly attached.

Yes he looks like a bit of a Baines clone and it would be nice to have him come through, but some of our fans have been a wee bit overboard with the 'sign him up ffs' shit on Twitter.

Is it really the final game of the season already?

As much as this season can't finish soon enough I still find myself fighting a strong sense of melancholy. No football for 2 or so months is nearly unbearable to contemplate...I'm not ready to let go yet!

With our recent upturn in home form vs Spurs I'd forgotten just how incredibly bad our PL record is against them.

They were once the biggest of bogies...probably why I dislike and love beating them so much.

I usually feel worse about the end of the season but truth be told, I accepted our season ending after Kiev with the rest being a big of a blur of "Oh Everton are on, guess I'll put them on". Our pre season is what I'm more excited about, unless we flounder again.

NBC shows every premier league game. Normally two on the main channel, the rest via stream online.

Today every game is being shown on tv at the same time. They do it every year. NBC are fantastic for prem league football.

Basically, every network with any kind of NBC affiliation gets into the act on the final Sunday, out of necessity.  Because Everton is a fairly big draw, we get a reasonably easy to find network (CNBC).

The QPR/Leicester match is on Oxygen, which usually shows "Project Runway" re-runs, and programming of that ilk.  Villa/Burnley is on Esquire Network, and I honestly have no idea what that even is.

Atsu also returns from the farm in the country.  What a day this might be.

It's been 110% clear for some time that Garbutt is gone.
Title: Re: Everton v Tottenham
Post by: blueToffee on May 24, 2015, 08:11:56 PM
Atsu has been such a bizarre loan. He hasn't shown much when he's been on, but you could also argue he's barely had a chance either. I suppose it's one of those that you have to trust he's not showing enough in training (aside from injury issues).
Title: Re: Everton v Tottenham
Post by: toffee_scot on May 24, 2015, 08:22:28 PM
Forgot about Atsu, I remember Martinez was trying to big him up a few months ago back when we were still on a poor run of results and slipping further down the table. I think Roberto tried to portray him as the ace up his sleeve (for when he came back from the ACON) just in case things got worse but when we were winning games without him then he didn't really feel the need to involve him quite as much, plus having Lennon certainly helped us gain a few more points.

Painful watching this everton team. So much of it is utterly average and most of the rest is completely overhyped. Massive season next time for the likes of Lukaku and Barkley. Their reputations and in Barkleys case international place wont hold with another like this.

So drab Id rather be in the gym.

If your therapy of all the drab this season has been hitting the gym then I imagine you look like this

Technically we could still refuse to come out for the second half, forfeit the game and still might be better off with the automatic 0-3.

They said on SSN that if Southampton & Spurs won, and Liverpool lost then they would get the Europa League via fair play and have to start their season on July 10th (or 2nd, whatever date we would have been condemned to if we topped fair play)

That suits them down to the ground then, send the kids out lose early, have a good go for champions league with a clean slate

Sounds like a bad game, no longer gutted i'm working

On their holidays after an okay season isnt so bad. After the shite we've had to put up with for 4 months is inexcusable/

To be fair though Im not sure its even true. Mirallas greedy circus act, Barkley careless, Lukaku a bit average. Drab dull uninspired shite. Its not a new thing. Sadly "on their holidays" probably isnt the problem. A bit shite is the real issue

I genuinely think Martinez is critically flawed and his ceiling is fighting relegation but at some point failing. He got lucky winning the FA Cup but got relegated at the end of the day.. he hasn't improved us as a team with any consitency and i can't see him doing it really.. i truly wish i was wrong but results and performances don't lie...

Surely his ceiling was last season, if he's just some relegation fighting manager how did we finish where we did?

It's more likely that if he isn't what we thought he was then he's just some 10th place manager.

barcodes survive :(

You can't pick a single game out of an entire season that cost a team their survival, but the Hull-Burnley game comes pretty close.

Shambles of a performance to finish off a shambles of a season.  Hopefully Martinez waving to the crowd is goodbye from him.

Summed up the season really.

Too bad, can only hope that we can make the changes (personnel, tactics, etc.) to improve next year but a lot needs to be done.

Can only assume Barkley was utter shite to be hooked at halftime?

He had one brilliant pass, Mirallas fucked up that chance. Other than that I don't remember anything positive from him.

Lads and ladettes, let's not bicker too much, it's not worth it.

It's been a shite season and this result doesn't mean anything really in that context, it would've been shite if we won, drew or lost. What is slightly worrying is that we weren't roaringly, spectacularly shite, just ... average and clueless. It isn't a shiteness that can be used as an emotional spring board for next season, like when we finished 17th.

Roberto will have his work cut out in the summer, we must start pre-season with a better mentality from the team and better tactical ideas from the manager. Oh, and hopefully better players too but that costs money, so we might as well forget about it.

Anyway let's not all descend into stupid squabbles. We've been shit, and it's not nearly good enough, I'm sure we can all agree. Yes it's funny to see the other lot being battered, but really our own shitness should be the priority.

Man Utd finish 4th with 70pts, 1 point less than we did last season when we finished 5th.

Oh well.

Maybe next season...

Our season ended months ago, this defeat to Spurs isn't worth getting down about.

If you can't mock your rivals losing by their highest ever margin for 50 years on the final stop of their best player's farewell tour then there's no point in having rivals at all.

It's been said quite a lot in recent weeks but this summer is absolutely monumental for us. This season is done and dusted, so let's hope for the right signings, better pre-season and a sturdier mentality and start next season with the performances and result akin to the 13/14 season.

Unfortunately...

Exactly.

It's been a shambles from pre-season onwards, apart from a few good wins against very open opponents in the Europa League.

Terrible preparation for the season, poor approach to fitness and injury management, and a huge backwards step tactically.

I can't think of a single match where we were excellent start to finish, or where we were even a patch on the majority of our performances last season.

I'm not hopeful all of these things will be addressed over the summer, are any of you?

Some of our fans need to stop worrying about the RS results. No matter how shit of season they are having we generally seem to be even shitter.20 years and counting for some silverware. Focus on the crap that has been served up this season and the clown which will serve us more of the same shit next season.

In the entire League, this season just wasn't any fucking fun, was it?
3-0 vs Manu was fun, and a few of the Europa performances.  But the league was no good, downright awful and will quickly be forgotten.

A match fitting with most of the season.

No shape, no ideas going forward.

Very poor.

I thought there was indeed good shape.  Problem is too many individual errors as so many of our key players have taken a big backward step this year:

Baines
Howard
Coleman
Mirallas
Barkley
Barry

All had poor seasons.  Our individual performances have been and were awful today.

I've been totally cheated.  I've taken no, none, nil, nada satisfaction from the rs 6-1 humiliation to powerhouse Stoke City today.  None.  Thanks Everton.

Everton players need to schedule several individual long, hard looks into the mirror this summer.

You need a wages limit in the Premier League.  We need that over here in baseball.

I've never been an NFL american football guy, but the "salary cap" has been a massive success for that sport and NBA basketball.  There are no Chelseas and Man Cities in NFL... every city's team has the capacity to build a winning team, despite a lower profile.  You cannot simply buy it.

After all, the plan in football is to protect and reinforce the monopoly, not disrupt it

*sigh*

How many times have we been through this? The US system works brilliantly, provided that:

1. No other country plays that sport. (Or they don't play it anywhere near that level.)
2. There's no promotion and relegation.
3. You implement a complicated and convoluted system of drafts, designated players and other financial weirdness.

All these are required to make the salary cap work the way it does in the US, and since football satisfies precisely none of them, can we please just move on?

UK and Europe surprises me in that there are large social welfare states, yet in sport, exploitative monopolies masquerading as "big clubs" as you referred to.  Seems strange to a Yank.

Same for the US, for a country that bangs on so much about the free market, idolises the self-made man and cares so little about those who fall by the wayside, their sporting competitions look like pure communism.

For example, did you know that footballers in the MLS aren't actually employed by their clubs? Their contract is centrally managed.

I agree.  I am saying I like the competitive market wherein the NFL and NBA clubs compete.  Money is minimized somewhat, transfer strategy, team synergy and managerial ability maximized.  Unfortunately, I'm just not interested in either sport.

Well-supported but cash-poor clubs like ours would do well.

Edit: no, I did not know that.  I have no interest in the MLS.
