Hoping to see a much stronger team than the one Shogs has suggested (not a pop at you, Shogs, I know it's a hard one to predict)

Can she catch crosses and cover her near post?

I just don't think Martinez is going to be that bothered about this tournament. After Arsenal at the weekend and a league match to come on Saturday then I reckon there'll be a lot of changes.

Is it?

Still don't think that'll make a difference to the team, especially with Oviedo, Cleverley, Gibson and maybe even Pienaar needing matches.

I don't think it'll go down too well, if he puts out a significantly weakened team and we go out. At all.

I think Martinez needs to take this very seriously as keeping going in this tournament could give him some patience with fans if the league form isn't great if there is a potential trophy in sight. If we go out playing a weakened team he could lose a lot of the fans he does have.

Is it possible Pienaar could play a small role in this game? Would be great to see him back.

Although I fancy our chances, still a bit disappointed after the last 3 games so expecting nothing.

Norwich like to play football but they're not very good at it.

On paper this is the sort of game which suits us very nicely.

We really need to see something here.  But that cuts both ways.  Do you tinker around to shake things up?  Or will people think you are just punting the Cup (which we must not do now) and see blood in the water?
Title: Re: Everton v Norwich
Post by: GLewis on October 27, 2015, 11:43:08 AM
Robles

Coleman Stones Mori Oviedo

Cleverley McCarthy

Mirallas Naismith Osman

Lukaku

Potential for Gibson to play; maybe start with Kone but he involved Lukaku in nearly every game last year, even at the start when he was struggling with injury, so will imagine he'll start tonight.

Hoping for a decent turn out with it being half term.

I'm assuming they will only play half of their normal XI.

If so that line up should be enough to beat what they put out.

Going out now, would put a fair bit of strain on Sunday's match; I can hear the aggressive grumbles at the sideways passing in the first 5 minutes now ;)

                                          Joel
         Coleman       Stones      Mori       Galloway

                  Barkley       McCarthy     Cleverley

          Mirallas              Lukaku          Konedog

4-3-3 with a strong line up and the likes of Gibson, Piennar and Oviedo baby getting some game time when we are 4 up.

COYB!

If it's one of our only chances of silverware i think he needs to take it seriously. Dropping Howard is a risk as Joel hasn't played with Mori in front of him, so may lack understanding? Too many changes and we may pay for it by getting done at home............ to fucking Norwich!! I'd give Mirallas a go though and Kone.

Come to think of it did he ever play for anyone?

Though we would have had more wins over Norwich over the years than we actually do. Don't like stats like that, makes them look like a it of a bogey team.

this is the sort of game rom scores two in and looks amazing, then on sunday we'll just be firing it at his collar bone from 60 yards away while he's marked by two grocks, and people will be posting in the match day thread how much they wish we had shane long instead.

and baines! seriously i can't stress enough how much they will solve all our problems.

they do 1-2's from the half way line that get us further up the pitch rather than people like mc carthy dribbling it slowly towards geri, then passing it to him when he is marked by two players, then back to coleman who goes to barry then to barkley and we all hope he runs past everyone and scores.

Neither Gibson nor Oviedo was on the bench on Saturday so either they've got problems or we've got a big squad! Cleverley looks a certainty to get some game time but maybe not from the start after such a long time out. This is Gerry's competition so he must surely play.

I'm expecting something like....

                  Robles

Browning Stones Mori Galloway (Average age 21)

Mirallas  Osman Gibson Naismith (Average age 30)

             Gerry     Kone

Keep the faith

Martinez, speaking ahead of tomorrow's Capital One Cup toe with Norwich City at Goodison, also confirmed that Bryan Oviedo is now fully fit, but added that doubts remain over Leighton Baines, Steven Pienaar and Tony Hibbert.

"Baines, Hibbert and Pienaar need a little bit longer before they can be considered," he added..

There's no chance with baines though is there?

Pienaar played for U21's so defo a chance we will see him.

Jesus - just read that Norwich have won the league cup twice before.
We're fucking jinxed in this competition - more chance of Everton winning the African Cup of Nations than this damn thing.

Still COYB and all that
Good lineup and very good bench - more than enough to progress against this lot - and that fucking Delia bint.

Hmm, ok team.

Obviously no left mid; but at least Oviedo can move up the pitch.

Browning can jus give it to Mirallas for him to shoot.

And with Ossie and Gibson playing Lukaku may get a through ball.

That's the killer. We all love the club, we all want to see the club win things, and so on. But really, what most of us want is for the football to be enjoyable and it rarely is these days.

We had plenty of horrible, dull stretches under Moyes but eventually we'd click and batter some teams. I'd love for this group to show us the same but I'm not holding my breath.

Norwichs movement has been very good. We have very little and absolutely none of real team work and inteligence. We look like a team without a proper system, plan or any real management.

True. Our movement is poor, as is our defensive shape. It makes you wonder what we even work on in training.

It was often like this under Moyes too, we were static and predictable, no movement off the ball, no offering an out ball for team mates.

And then sometimes it'd just flip around and we'd look great. And then back again. I've always wondered why this was but could never quite put my finger on it.

Two good moments from the replays I just watched:

- Excellent anticipation by Browning to win the ball and put Lukaku through for our best chance
- Really nice team move from Gibson - Oviedo - Mirallas - McCarthy and then almost Lukaku connecting as he slid in at the end.

Other than that, not many pluses from what I saw.

On another note, Arabic TV likes to cover replays from every conceivable angle don't they.

Actually quite like it.

He did say something like that.

But I think it was because we had a couple of fresh injuries, and we just played EL on Thursday night, so RM just said we'll just do what we always do... or something of the sort.

I don't want to start the whole 'Martinez out' thread again but can anybody honestly highlight some parts he's improved with this team?. It just seems like the same old from last season.

I desperately want him to figure it out but, with each passing fixture, it looks less and likely.

He's convinced exciting players to join, done excellent work with the youth players, and generally been a good ambassador for the club. But the product on the field is garbage with probably the most talented group of players the club has had in years.

Am I allowed to say me?

Two reasons really, Martinez said he wants to win this cup, but for large parts of the game it was the same predictable, frustrating Everton, slow, slow,slow....go behind and it's a different Everton. Why can we not, at home, dominate "with respect" Norwich?

Second reason is selfish and linked to the above, we all work had, look forward to the games, kick off with untold optimism and blind belief that our Everton are the real deal.....Martinez lately has even picked players we all want to see play, not warm the bench.......I want to be a Shefield Wednesday fan tonight, that's the feeling I want after a game, not sat here "relieved" my team beat Norwich in a penalty shot out.

fucking hell.

He did alright coming in and made a couple of decent saves, but they weren't anything I wouldn't expect him to get. Even the one from the header just outside the six yard box wasn't hit that hard. If it was Howard they'd be called routine so it's the same for Robles.

He still looked terribly unsure at the half dozen corners they had in the first half. Apart from one where he was blocked in he came then changed his mind and tried to backtrack again, if a Norwich player got a decent head on any of them he'd have been caught on the back foot. Even for their goal he came, didn't make it and never got properly back on position before they scored. He was nothing special, even the penalty save was a fairly easy save as long as he went they right way.

No penalty save is routine.

He was a little over-dramatic at times, but you are probably down playing his overall performance a bit too. His save of the header from six yards out was less routine than you make it out to be, and I just watched Norwich's goal again, and he was not out of position when the shot was taken.

I understand you are trying to manage expectations since he did not actually have a blinder, but it was a very solid performance overall, and certainly encouraging.

Can't we just swerve this 'if howard done that etc' stuff and just praise what was a good goalkeeping display?

Something we've very rarely seen from howard over the last year.

Has to go both ways. If Howard had made those saves tonight everyone would say it was just his job. I'm not defending Howard just playing down the current Garbutt/Oviedo syndrome that always follows a fringe player putting in a half decent performance. Howard's shite form is clouding the fact that it really wasn't anything stand out tonight.

I just dont want him playing anymore. Im not even arsed if he is a decent shot stopper, he is a goal keeper, its his job. He has fucked up badly too often now & its time to say goodbye.

Not another debate though, we have a thread for that.

You mean the thread I started asking for ideas for a new keeper which turned into a slag off Howard thread?

Ha ha no he never fucking hell
The lad did well. He made routine saves and saved a pen

Won the game tho?

Everton couldn't win as a team in 120 minutes and so by my calculations his penalty save won the game.

He had a decent game.

The last save was very good.

Good save in the pens too.

But he was very dodgy early on and was a bit bizarre on the goal, although the main problem was no-one marking a player in the 6 yard box.

If Howard has that game no-one notices.

That's what happened last time.

Robles has a standard game and it's elevated to a level above what anyone would say about Howard because they're fed up with him.

Anyway there is again no point arguing over this

I'm not a Howard fan but like gash am fed up with oviedo syndrome

course he will be dodgy early doors, he never plays plus its a total makeshift defence.

Whats the point anyway, Martinez has just said Howard will be back next week.

By them calculations Nathan redmonds miss won Everton the match or the three penalty takers who scored won the match too so stop being daft.

To be fair, in comparison to the 'average' Robles performance, he had a stormer tonight. Even ignoring the overly dramatic saves.

Still not good enough to be Howard's replacement though.

Swansea, meh

Southampton was nothing special.

The good performances from him are very few and far between those though.

He's making too many mistakes.

There's no-one who is saying anything otherwise.

But the Swansea and Southampton games are exactly the point.

There were some good saves and general command of the box.

Nothing special, particularly but neither was there anything tonight.

And there were still mistakes that he makes pretty much every game.

Sorry not posted in ages but am infuriated to do so!

I Find it increasingly ominous and ridiculous, that once again  1) We dont seem to cope with any sort of set pieces 2) That also extends to crosses in general and 3) (I'm sure I heard the statistic somewhere)  we are they only side in the PL not to score from one yet, directly or indirectly. Are we just giving set pieces a miss in training or something, its getting more absurd game by game. We aint good enough to not sort that shit out and just rely on our apparent 'total fucking football' philosophy.

I actually like Martenez and trust in him (although tough sometimes to understand) but I'm just after any reassurance on the above point(s).

fucking loved the penalties, the rest of the game can do one though

the noise out of the Street End was immense and the Norwich players shit themselves

my wife is still yet to see Roberto Martinez lose a game when she's gone the match.  I'm buying her a season ticket.  We either win every game then, or she finally finds out why I get so wound up!  So win win really!

Everything else can do one

That was funny that, he only came over the Bullens to give his shirt to a disabled fan and ended up doing away with his full kit. Shite game in all truth, we stepped up after going a goal down and bringing on Del and Barkley but it still could have gone either way had Norwich taken their chances better or Mirallas and Barkley buried their chances in ET. 4 top notch pens though, Gibson's was the pick of them, no keeper was stopping that

Didn't see the game.

While some are praising Robles for a good performance, I would like to note my alarm at the fact that our goalkeeper has been given the opportunity to put in a good performance at home against one of the worst teams in the league, through our own ineptitude.

Again, the issue is one of tactics and motivation. The seemingly interminable Howard vs Robles debate does not address this.

A keeper can only save what is thrown at him. Robles did that. A keeper is there to stop goals. He did that. Everything he could save he did. That's all you want from your keeper.

Crikey:

Everton’s success halted a run of four shoot-out defeats at Goodison Park, dating back to 1970 when Borussia Monchengladbach were defeated by a similar 4-3 margin with one of the Everton scorers Howard Kendall.

And I bet Stones is happier than ever that he stayed and kept out of the disaster-area that is Chelsea FC !
