Wednesday 13th January 19:45
Premier League Match #21

Man City's last 5 matches

Man City 4-1 Sunderland (Sterling, Yaya Toure, Bony, De Bruyne)
Leicester 0-0 Man City
Watford 1-2 Man City (Yaya Toure, Aguero)
Everton 2-1 Man City - Capital One Cup (Navas)
Norwich 0-3 Man City - FA Cup (Aguero, Iheanacho, De Bruyne)

Everton's last 5 matches

Newcastle 0-1 Everton (Cleverley)
Everton 3-4 Stoke (Lukaku x2, Deulofeu)
Everton 1-1 Tottenham (Lennon)
Everton 2-1 Man City - Capital One Cup (Funes Mori, Lukaku)
Everton 2-0 Dagenham and Redbridge - FA Cup (Kone, Mirallas Pen)

Manchester City

After back to back cup matches, Manchester City return to the Premier League having progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win away to Norwich at the weekend. Despite falling to defeat in the Capital One Cup last Wednesday, Manchester City have an excellent record against Everton since Roberto Martinez became manager and they're unbeaten in their last five league matches against Everton (W4, D1). This will be the first home fixture of the 2016 for Manchester City after they took all three points in 16 of the 20 league fixtures at the Etihad Stadium in 2015 (D1, L3) but Manuel Pellegrini's side have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last eight home Premier League fixtures which is their longest league run without a clean sheet since October 1991 (13 matches). Manchester City have actually only kept three clean sheets in their last 15 Premier League matches and all of those came away from home in the form of a 0-0 draw (Manchester United, Aston Villa, Leicester).

This is a somewhat harsh comparison considering the injury troubles which have plagued Sergio Aguero this season, though that isn't unusual with the Argentine. Romelu Lukaku is the top scorer in the premier league this season with 15 goals whilst he has also garnered 5 assists to his name which is equal to the amount he assisted in the Premier League last season. This season, Lukaku has created 30 chances for his teammates in the Premier League which is significantly more than Aguero (7) and only second to Ross Barkley (34) in the Everton squad. Aguero has had the higher percentage of shots on target with 28 of his 47 shots finding the target compared to 38 of Lukaku's 70 shots whilst he also narrowly beats Lukaku in terms of successful dribbles but it's in the statistic of aerial duels where Lukaku shines, winning 2.25 headers per90 with Aguero's numbers are unsurprisingly lower (0.31). However, the Manchester City striker posts a significantly higher pass completion rate (89%) compared to the Belgian (75%).

Possible Line-Ups

Everton

Since their last outing in the Premier League, Everton enjoyed back to back victories at Goodison Park with wins over their upcoming opponents Manchester City in the Capital One Cup along with a comfortable victory against Dagenham & Redbridge in the FA Cup. Despite beating Manchester City last Wednesday Evening, Roberto Martinez is still yet to taste victory over City in a league fixture as both of his successes have come in cup competition whilst he has lost 11 of the 13 league meetings and fallen to defeat in all of his away fixtures against Everton's upcoming opponents. Despite all that, Manchester City are statistically Everton's second favourite opposition in the Premier League with the Toffees enjoying victory on 17 occasions, the only team they've beaten more often is West Ham (22). Manchester City's failure to keep a clean sheet at home should mean goals in this fixture because Everton have scored in each of their last 11 Premier League matches which is currently the longest run of any side and six of those matches have come away from Goodison Park. Everton's last victory on the blue half of Manchester came in 2010 thanks to goals from Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines.

Despite a promising set of fixtures, Everton have taken just five points from their last five fixtures (W1, D2, L2), though that is still an improvement on the three points they'd taken during this part of last season (W1,L4). The Toffees are just two places higher in the table compared to at this stage last season and they've taken six more points whilst boasting a much stronger goal difference. Everton trailed Southampton in 4th place by 15 points after 20 fixtures had been played last season and they're nine points away from the current occupants of 4th place, this season. Everton are still to beat a top half side in 2015/16 whilst all of their victories at this stage of last season had come against sides that went on to eventually finish in the bottom half. Wednesday night will be Everton's 21st league fixture of this season and Manchester City were also the opponents for their 21st match of last season's campaign in a match which saw Steven Naismith equalise to earn Everton a point at Goodison Park and they went on to lose just one of the following four fixtures (W1, D2).

Think they'll be up for this. Bit of revenge. Would take two draws from the next two times we play them.

We'll give them this one so they can go on and win the league, and they give us the next one so we can on and win the cup. Deal?

RM saying Cleverley needs to be assessed.

We're down to the bare bones. Not to sound like Klopp, but the schedule over this time of year is ridiculous.

A bit of a tall order but we just have to take whatever confidence we gained in the recent win over them into this match. Maybe we can frustrate them enough to unsettle them, we've still got the firepower to score if we get it right...you never know.

Don't away goals only count in extra time in the league cup?

Always a weird one when you play the same team a few times in a short space of time. No real idea what to expect, how this game will affect us or whether it will impact the cup second leg.

Not fearful of City though. For me, there's no reason to think that we can't come out of the three games unbeaten if we set up properly and keep the intensity and organisation of the first semi, and the last part of the Spurs game. Conversely, they could just bum us everywhere.

I thought we had a really good record agaisnt City, but I guess I'm wrong according to Shoggers!

I guess my memory ain't what it used to be! (next year is the big four-oh)

Anyways - time to put it right tomorrow.

2-1 to us - Aguero to score after 7 mins, testy anxious game until 88th minute equaliser from a Baines free-kick and then a 90+4 min winner from FuMo at a corner.

Fact. Bet your house on it.

Our record is decent against them, only beaten West Ham more times in the Premier League but Martinez's record is abysmal.

City seem to get a dodgy penalty when we've played them at their place in recent years. Each of the last three visits in fact, all soft.

Fellaini @ 1:35

Coleman @ 1:24

Jagielka @ 0:40

I can see us winning this . I think the crowd at Goodison may finally have got to the Manager and made him tighten things up . Away from home we have been tighter anyway as teams don't try to catch us on the break . As the first leg showed they are week at the back and a bit soft in the middle at the minute . Besic seems to have comeback like a man possessed and he may just be the difference tonight . Hope Robles gets a chance because he really needs to be running the rule over a fully fit Aguero before the 2nd leg . A good performance tonight should get the players into the mindset of going to Wembley .

I look forward to these battles with City. For a "top" PL side they aren't that obnoxious* and their players mostly get on with the game except for Toure, who finds it necessary to get in the ref's ear at every decision. Pellegrini is, for the most part**, a class act and has dealt with the Guardiola situation gracefully (in stark contrast to Mancini, who was always a wanker of the highest order). It still amazes me that Pellegrini gets so little credit for the "big" club jobs that he's had -- he's been great for City and was excellent at Real, denied the La Liga title by probably the greatest side in recent history.

They're going to pose a threat today but we have enough to steal a win. They play a suicidally high line and don't really have the personnel to deal with Barkley/Lukaku 1 v. 1, so if we sit back to absorb pressure and look to get those two on the ball in between their midfield and defense we might cause some problems.

As some others have said, I'm really hoping for a continuation of the solid play we've seen in the two fixtures before Dag & Red. However it plays out, we should learn something about how we need to set up for the second leg of the semifinal.

(And please, no Kone on the left tonight!)

* The players and manager that is. The support can be extremely obnoxious (see last week's game at Goodison).
** His moaning about the decisions in last week's game was kind of pathetic, though.

I'm reserving judgement on Osman until I see how he copes.

Roberto is trying to emulate the balance we get from having Cleverley in the side but I doubt Osman has the legs to a similar job (and Pienaar isn't completely match fit yet). Still, his guile in possession may help us relieve some of the pressure we're likely to be under.

Baines RB?

Obviously Cleverley would be playing if he was fit and Lennon is quite a different player to him whereas Osman does have similarities. It'd be suicide to play Mirallas and Deulofeu away to City.

Osman is starting?

That is a very strange one.

It makes sense in light of Martinez's refusal to start two out-and-out wingers at a time. Only other options if he did not want to start Mirallas were Kone and Peinaar, and I actually think Osman is the better choice over both of them. Peinaar is still regaining match fitness and returning from a seriously long injury layoff, and we all pretty much have grown tired of Kone starting on the left. Osman will be able to link up play, bring Baines into the game, and provide cover.

With that said, obviously I would prefer Kevin was starting. But that kind of goes without saying.

Stones at Rb won't be a problem. They don't play with a left mid do he should be troubled too much.

He's obviously think we can get some joy down their right, which is why osman is there to get the best out of baines. Plus he does bring a calming influence which is much needed. Still rather see Lennon though

He has not been all that poor. He does have 3 goals and an assist in limited game time, and has not gotten a consistent run out to really get going in the league. I do agree, however, that starting all three though could be problematic defensively, and I am actually fine with Martinez opting for a more defensive and possession minded option over Mirallas when playing a side like Man City.

Sagna Otamendi Demichelis Clichy
Fernando Toure
Navas De Bruyne Sterling
Aguero

Get Besic to put an early tackle on Sterling and you won't see him for the rest of the match.

We're selling him, but Martinez wanted to wait til we get through the cluster of games. Not necessarily that he'll be playing, but as an option in case we get a few injuries in forward positions. I think it makes sense.

It's pointless is he's not going to even put him on the bench for fear of him getting injured and blocking his move though. It becomes Catch 22, far better getting the money for him and using it to improve the squad.

...........RM said Naismith had an ankle injury didn't he ?

All the more reason to move him then if he's not even fit to be cover.

I'm going to pre-judge here and say that Osman starting is a woeful decision.  He has been great for us but he's old, slow, weak and can't shoot.  Hope he and Martinez prove me wrong though.

I don't see the logic in Stones/Lennon.

Stones is just going to sit back and defend whilst Deulofeu will have more of a free role in front of him, where he'll flourish.

His best quality is his speed over the first 5 yards and then the ability to get the ball in.

That's diminished quite a bit on his wrong side.

He'd almost always ignore Baines.

I'd say with Stones on the right it suits Deulofeu as he can just get on with it.

He just hasn't done anything at all to stake a claim when he's had a chance this season.

Plus, a 3 of Barkley, del and Mirallas would be a nightmare.

Because he has the ability to win you a match. I'd pick him over Osman any day, I'm not an Osman basher but he's more of a liability in this type of match IMO.

There was a cars involving four cars on the M62 earlier today, which has led to tailbacks all afternoon and evening. If people are unaware of it then they won't leave early.

Expecting there to be massive levels of fume over this, with thousands calling for refunds for not seeing all (or any!) of the match at this rate.

I think the Osman bit is actually quite clever tactically.  We want to use Pienaar, but he's only good for a half.  So we see if we can hang with them for a half with Ossie (who we'd have to use anyway).  If we do, great.  Throw Pienaar on and try to get a result.  If not, someone else and play out the string.

Given what RM has been asking of the right back for the past few weeks, Stones has played it very well. He's tucking in and supporting the play nicely in midfield and he's always looking for that through ball to Deleuofeu from his narrow position. I reckon he can find it one or twice in the second half.
Title: Re: Manchester City v Everton
Post by: Cozzie on January 14, 2016, 02:36:46 AM

ohh Barkley. You are so so good. Taking the piss big style tonight.

Stones has been sound at right back.

Besic boss. Barkley boss. Osman is the key to it all.

They've pressured the shit out of Stones when he has the ball, and he's been cool as fuck.  Full credit to him.

Osman was great but I wouldn't push our luck.  Go with Pienaar straight out of the halftime break.

I think Stones has been excellent at right back.

Besic gets through so much work it's incredible. His defensive covering is superb and it's taken so much pressure off Barry.

Only concern is that Osman doesn't seem to either be on the same wavelength as Rom and Deulofeu or his age has caught up with him and he just can't react as quickly as he needs to.

I honestly don't think Lennon can really play on the left. He never has for us, and I have no knowledge of him ever having period.

played there for SPurs many times, most notably when Gareth Bale was rinsing it and would play on the right himself.

Much better match than the World Cup one. Being a US supporter, I can tell you that he only made one legit good save that match, while he has made 2 or 3 good saves today.

Whenever he wants kone on, he should take Barkley off. Completely ignores the left side. Barkley doesn't even play as a 10 he plays deeper, so we need a left a left winger. It's just weird that he won't play two wingers

Or take one of the holding midfielders off and move Barkley deeper, though today was probably not the day for that option.

Under a lot of pressure in the second half and our counter-attack threat receded.

But I'm actually very encouraged by that. It was good to see us withstand 45 minutes of high pressure, refusing stubbornly to be dragged out of our (for a change, solid) shape and allowing few quality chances.

A real sign of progress after teams have been cutting through us with ease all season.

I am not basing that opinion on a single match - Stones has been poor almost the entire season and Funes Mori has been playing very well for the last five or six matches and offers a real threat on set pieces. And I think Stones looked better at right back because he was less easily exposed today.

I am not basing that opinion on a single match - Stones has been poor almost the entire season and Funes Mori has been playing very well for the last five or six matches and offers a real threat on set pieces. And I think Stones looked better at right back because he was less easily exposed today.

Played right-back at Barnsley didn't he?

I literally collapsed, the pen spot isn't far from the 6 yard line either, when he pointed you just automatically think pen.

Bit of luck for a change.

Exactly. Seen him point and I was furious with Stones to give the game away like that but then a feeling of relief when it was just a goal kick :D

He kinda sits alongside him in a left and right dm role
Besic seems to play in front of him, and does the full mf role ie box to box almost

We lacked any pace on both wings after the sub. Given the fact we were playing on the break I thought it made us more unbalanced. Weird one for me. Plus Lennon will always put in the defensive legwork too.

Yeah, I think with some more game time, Besic will start popping up with more goals and assists. You can see the ideas and intention are there, but that he is just a fraction off on occasion.

HOLY SHIT peeps.  I just finished the last 30' on DVR and I could have SWORN he pointed to the spot.  And I can't say I would have blamed him, though we deserved the fucking point (and EXACTLY that much).  He DID really lose the ball (possibly over the line) before Stones made contact, and maybe that's why no call.

Still, best nil-nil draw I've ever fucking seen.

9s for Howard, Baines, and Funes Mori

10 for Besic

8s for everyone else, what a TEAM effort

Howard made saves he was expected to save, what impressed was his communication with his back four, too often we concede because of panic... That seemed distant today.

I know I am probably in the minority here, but our best option in the dying minutes was to revert to a back 5. Lukaku was struggling, as expected from a guy not training. Subs should of been Oviedo for Deulofeu, bring stones into CB and Oviedo RWB and brough Pienaar in to play inside with Barkley. cut the isolation out of our CF

Yeah I don't really understand the subs.

I just want to get past these difficult games and start putting some wins behind us. We play with the same level of defensive intensity and organisation, combined with our ability to get goals, surely we'll start climbing the table in no time.

If we get through to the final, fantastic. But it's not make or break for me. We need to climb the table first and foremost, and establish the style we are going to play.

Had a weird night amongst the city fans. Stadium half empty at kick off due to a fucking car on the tram line to Ashton.  Thought we did great first half but sat back waaaay too much second half and seemed to be waiting to give them the game.

Some great defending blocks and I thought Howard had a great game.

Was right at the corner where they had a stonewall penalty disallowed - you should have heard the citeh fans when they realised the ref hadn't given a penalty, magic!

I was as far away as I was at Newcastle from the Everton fans, but whereas the noisy end of Geordies drowned out the Everton fans, here all you could here was the chants of the evertonians! Citeh fans are shit. Everton fans are awesome.

Gotta say the Etihad is a fucking lovely stadium mind, great facilities and awesome padded seats.

But took me 15 minutes longer to get back to my Manchester home from this game than it takes me to get home from games at Goodison. Stupid trams.

Also met Trevor Sinclair outside the ground. Erm, woot.

I really hope we do make it to the final, that would be amazing, but it's not like if the favourites beat us at home in the second leg we can really fume that much. Unless the team selection is bad or whatever.

Plus, I'm a bit worried about the final already because I don't think I could handle the media klopp wankathon, and frankly i think we'd flap it.

Thought we played quite well considering, especially in the first half.. the second was back's to the wall at times and Howard had a good game. Stones does fuck about at times, which doesn't help. Decent and probably the best result we could have had last night.. a pen denied in the 93rd minute was harsh but would have been harsh to give too at that time.
I think they'll be desperate to kill us at their place but that could play in to our hands.. Not sure about Ossie on the right, sloppy passing, but hopefully Cleverley will be back.

Strangely as individual games it'd be better they got the free penalty in the second leg than in the first or last night.  Say they'd got it in the first leg and everything else went the same[I know it wouldn't have, but you know what I mean] then they'd have 2 away goals and a tied game going into the second leg, and we'd be one point worse off in the league, where as if they started the game with the free penalty then we're still tied but with one less away goal.  Only way it gets worse is if the free penalty is given without time to alter a game plan from where we think we're in control and the ground is shifted with no time left.  So yeah, basically I'm talking rubbish.  Other than we're one point better off in the league which makes up for the point we lost last year due to the penalty decision in the same game.  And I think we're better off having a point this year than last, so its all come up roses?

Or it could be that I'm severely sleep deprived and rambling like a madman......
