Roberto just announced as their new manager
-
He has one hell of a silver tongue!
-
Just saw this on twitter, and here's the confirmation if no one can believe it:
https://twitter.com/BelRedDevils/status/760929874202820609
Poor Mirallas. lolol
-
The Belguim FA are their own worst enemy...
-
No wonder Kev looks like he could cry.
Fucker is following him everywhere.
-
That is genuinely amazing. Wow.
-
What.The.Fuck?!?!
-
Belgium doing well to get to the semis and then bottling it at the World Cup then...
-
This is hilarious
-
It's actually a great job for him. Even though they have a great ranking they are still under performers. If you picks them up they could be great and if not people will just say they can't play together as a team. Good luck to him, I don't mind him now that he's not our manager
-
His justification for managing the most talented group of players in international football is ruining the most talented group of club footballers he's managed.
This guy could smash any woman in the world if he wanted. His sales patter must be out of this world.
-
How he's got that job I don't know, wonder how @Ross (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=2316) feels about it?
-
David Moyes would have been better suited for that. What a surprise.
-
He has one hell of a silver tongue!
You mean... waffle.
-
I wonder if he can buy Niasse for Belgium?
-
I'd like to say good luck to him
He is a nice guy and he didn't purposely make us shit or anything!
He has done very well to get that job though. Will be interesting to see how he adapts to international management
-

Bet Lukaku is made up.
-
What on gods green earth is this?
-
I didn't think it could get worse than Wilmots.
But it can.
-
He has one hell of a silver tongue!
More like a brown tongue. Or chocolate one at the very least...
-
Apparently Lukaku has put in a transfer request for a move to a top country.
-
Who the fuck sanctioned this?
How?
-
My gob is smacked.
Someone else has bought in to his snake oil salesman patter. ;)
He'll get to a semi final and spend the next few months telling everyone what a great achievement it was.
-
Probably better than Wilmots.
He'll probably be fine, he's better suited to tournaments.
-
Watch them win the fucking World Cup now.
-
Looking forward to seeing how Alderweireld and Vertonghen fare.
Will good defenders cover Roberto's tactical shortcomings or will he drag the defense down to his level?
-
😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 unbelievable.
-
Can't see the players liking him in charge. That'll never change.
-

Or that Belgium were the last Benelux team to get knocked out of the tournament.
-
Looking forward to seeing how Alderweireld and Vertonghen fare.

Hoping he teaches them things to take back to Spurs
-
Comedy gold.
How the fuck did he pull this one off?
-
16/1 for the World Cup in Russia. Get it while you can.
-
Just read on the BBC that Belgium wanted a "strong and open communicator" who has a "proven track record in transmitting tactical and strategic knowledge" to top players.
-
https://twitter.com/JayShelley89/status/760932892033810433
-
I wonder if he will ask Witsel or Felllaini to assume his genius plan of dropping between the centre backs? Absolute game changer of a tactic that is.
-
Wonder if he'll try get Ferguson to put the cones out
-
The most telling thing for me was that when I first read it, I was about 75% certain it was a piss take. Maybe higher.
-
Er........................... ...WHAT?!?! What are they doing?!?! Martinez to follow Wilmots..................
-
Might suit not being a week to week manager
-
Must be in the essential section of the application form - experience of making a team less than the sum of its parts.
-
Martinez is very fortunate to get the Belgium job, and to be fair, I think it is a much better job than managing Hull. Perhaps having been sacked at Everton, Martinez has had a long time to think about what went wrong and starting at a new managerial job he might just implement things a little differently, depending on just how rigid his philosophy is, I certainly don't expect Belgium to be solid defensively.
Saying that, the Belgian FA must have looked at his cup record in the last few years and the fact that he won the FA Cup with Wigan and reached 2 semi-finals with us last season whilst also helping us do quite well in the Europa League until that game in Kiev. Perhaps international football would suit Martinez's style.
I wonder how he'll get on with Lukaku, especially as not long after he was sacked Lukaku admitted Martinez had "lost the dressing room". Plus he rarely played Mirallas in the last year so I can't see him feature in the Belgian team unless there was an injury crisis.
Let's see how he does, he might very well surprise us - if Leicester can win the Premier League, just imagine Martinez lifting the World Cup in Moscow in 2 years time.
-
Might suit not being a week to week manager
A weak week to week manager at that.
-
Lukaku looked ecstatic when given the news.
'That's bad that!'
-
It's the players that sucked, guys.
-
It's the players that sucked, guys.
His set up sucked a lot too
-
It's the players that sucked, guys.
Praise the lord for that well-placed comma.
-
Praise the lord for that well-placed comma.
Me speak good english
-
Poor Kev
-
Wonder what his nickname will be?
-
Belgium doing everything they can to ruin the best group of players they will ever have.
-
Gary Lineker said: “Roberto Martínez is the new coach of Belgium. Wish him well in turning a side that plays really open into one that plays....really open.”
Taking the piss now........
-
The most telling thing for me was that when I first read it, I was about 75% certain it was a piss take. Maybe higher.
We all did man, we all did.
-
Rom fell for it as much as us. Cast our minds back to the first season and the game against Arsenal when we lined up with Rom on the right flank. He fucked Monreal's ass all game and when he scored pointed straight to Roberto, ran over over him holding four fingers up and jumped on him like a mad man. He must have felt, like a lot of us did, that the man could do no wrong and we were riding the crest a beautiful wave to fourth place.
His reaction today is a perfect encapsulation of how that optimism died lolol
-
He is most definitely reading NSNO on his laptop and doing this...
-
This is just mental.
What are the Belgians thinking. They're a team of individuals who need someone to coach them as a team and they could not get anyone worse than Martinez for that.
-
Hoping he teaches them things to take back to Spurs
[At a Spurs training session]
Pochettino: What are you doing?
Alderweireld: Roberto told me to... [interrupted with a loud SLAP!].
Pochettino: Don't listen to anything Roberto tells you. Ever.
[End scene]
-

Alderweireld: Roberto told me to [SLAP!]

[End scene]
The phrase "Roberto told me to do it" sounds uncannily like what a child blaming a broken vase on his imaginary friend would say.
I don't know why, but there is something in the name Roberto that just screams "imaginary friend".
-
After year of Wilmots and now this it's pretty clear that the Belgian FA don't give a shit.

A bit of a weird one, but good luck to him. I'll bet he sleeps like a baby, but with lovely psychedelic football dreams. He's a fascinating character for sure.
-
I'm not one for heavily criticising managers, owners or players because with rare exceptions they all try to do their best. So I feel a bit guilty writing this.
Earlier in the evening I had a quick glance at the thread about the Man Unt game and saw one or two comments about Belgium and Martinez but presumed they were jokes and couldn't be bothered trawling back to see what the joke was about.
I passed some comment to my wife as she was finishing the late milking before collecting the eggs and cooking my meal before she scrubbed the kitchen floor where the chickens had capped and we both laughed at the absurdity of the idea.
I hereby promise never to make a football prediction again.

I know how you feel. To quote Captain Miller from Saving Private Ryan "Things have just taken a turn for the surreal"

Iceland to move further up the world rankings.
There is just no end to the footballing shocks this year.
-
I honestly can't think of a manager that has "fallen up" more than Roberto. From a relegated team to a historically big club to managing a top 10 country in the world.
How?
-
Cos he is a pretty good manager who has an incredible agent.
-
Cos he is a manager who has an incredible agent.
Fixed it for you
-
FUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!
sincerely, Rom.
-
People on here especially do not like to admit it but he is a good manager and he will prove it as Belgium manager and then at some big club after that.
I still maintain that our players let him down as much as anything else.
-

He's got great potential, but he needs to adapt if he is to realise that potential. His footballing philosophy is commendable, but it is flawed.
-

But he's not... At all.
A 7 year trend of making the Premier League clubs he's managed worse season after season and he's a good manager? Ok then.
Must be just extremely unlucky with those fine margins ey.
-

I thought at first someone had done some old thread grave-robbing and revived a quote by you from February 2015.
Fucking hell, mate. Fucking hell.
I will say I like the appointment. Only because it may keep Martinez away from TV commentator jobs in which he'd yammer his chirpy inanities at us for almost two hours while we were trying to enjoy a good game of football.
Still, I think his true calling is as an infomercial host.
-
Maybe as an international manager and not working with the players on a daily basis his flawed style may not be as potent.
I mean, surely he can't wreck a defence when he only has them 1 week every few months.
I'm just trying to rationalize how anyone with any common sense could come to the decision of appointing this guy.
-
Charmed his way into another high profile job.
Can't say he's not talented in some aspects.
-
I mean, surely he can't wreck a defence when he only has them 1 week every few months.
Don't underestimate the power of the buffoon
-
Cos he is a pretty good manager who has an incredible agent.
"Incredible" in the literal sense of the word is probably correct.
-
Let's face it. He's gone in and said "Everton were skint and a shit team, they've been skint for years, I took them to two semis, which is phenomenal"
They've gone " yeah Lukaku's dad said they were a bit shit too so you must be right, when can you start?"
-
So Lukaku has to keep playing for him? Hahahahaha.
-
-
International football and it's generally slower pace may well suit him down to the ground
-
They had a Belgian journo on the radio this morning who was as shocked as we are.
He said the Belgian FA is skint and offered him €1m, which he's accepted.
-

So they just posted an ad.
"Prestigious FA looks for manager. Can't pay much, entry level job. Must have own shoes."
-
After year of Wilmots and now this it's pretty clear that the Belgian FA don't give a shit.
Well. Belgium is a "non-country" anyways so maybe this is just the way things are being handled there. Have to say I just stared at the screen for a while when I read the news today oh boy...
-
:Howard:

How?
He is the one object in universe made out of atoms that defies gravity!
Ironic since physical play isn't his style!
-
Wonder how long it will be before Lukaku starts angling for a move. Talking about how he needs to be playing for a country who is challenging for the title.
-
fenomenaal - it is a Dutch word as I couldn't find the Flemish equivalent.
-
This is a truly terrible appointment.
International football is all about using the scarce training time before a tournee to hammer out a functioning system quickly. There is no place whatsoever for lofty ideals and long term projects as the next knockout game is only three days away.
Wilmots was tactically clueless but he at least commanded respect from his players as they would have grown up with him as the face of their national game. The current Belgium team is full of PL players who know Martinez and his teams fairly well so I would doubt he commands the same respect.
-
Let's be honest though, the top managers aren't in charge of international teams these days
-
“I felt this was a great opportunity, a great challenge, and I’m thankful to the Belgian FA,” he said. “I’ve been working with Belgian players and I’ve been intrigued by Belgian football, the talent of the Belgium players is there to be seen.
“I’m humbled, proud, honoured to be the head coach of Belgium as a country. It will be a special journey together, to support these players that have got the world at their feet.”
Then he goes on about teaching them to defend as well as attack. Jesus.
-
Good luck to him
-
Allardyce for England
Martinez for Belguim
I'm gonna throw a fiver on Pulis for Spain
-
He's taking Grahame Jones.
Oh lord.
-
Good luck to him
Good luck to Belgium. They are going to need it.
-
Allardyce for England
Martinez for Belguim
I'm gonna throw a fiver on Pulis for Spain
Only if Paul Le Guen turns them down. As he must have with Belgium.
-
Belgium are about to get relegated from world football as we know it. Oh dear! lolol
-
He's taking Grahame Jones.
Oh lord.
He must waken up every morning thanking the lord for making Martinez so fucking gullible.
-
16/1 for the World Cup in Russia. Get it while you can.
Is it possible for me to bet on the national team getting relegated?
-
Is it possible for me to bet on the national team getting relegated?
yes, yes it is. I run a firm. I am giving pretty good odds. 10-1 belgium to get relegated. Easy money. Minimum $1000 bets.
-
Is it possible for me to bet on the national team getting relegated?
They'll get relegated from UEFA to CONCACAF
-
Thing is, they'll probably do alright. Belgium have such a good team that something truly catastrophic would have to happen for them to miss a major tournament, or even get through the WC group stages.
So whilst he's a shite manager and appears a poor appointment, I reckon this could go a long way to rehabilitating his reputation. And to be fair away from the day to day of club football, it also gives a still young, once promising manager a lot of time to learn and improve.
This really is a fantastic opportunity for him, the best he could've hoped for, and he could come out the other side of it a much better manager.
-
Hope he does well.
And then relegates Newcastle in 2019.
-
Thierry Henry to be one of his assistants.
-
Mirallas in the squad too
-
Mirallas in the squad too
Reckon he'll always call him up but never actually play him.
:)
-
Graeme Jones is assistant manager isn't he?
Jesus Christ.
-
Just shows you, if you're talented enough and you work really hard to prove yourself then you too can one day be an understudy to Graeme Jones
Well done Thierry, bravo
-
You can just see a few of the Belgian stars turning up for the first international break, taking one look at Graeme Jones & thinking "Who the fuck are you, you fucking bell?"
-
Sparked my Friday up nice this did......
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/aug/26/theirry-henry-belgium-assistant-coach-arsenal
Ha ha ha....jeezis!
-
Bet Lukaku can't wait to link up with Henry to tell him how great he is.
-
This has reminded me how hilarious the whole thing is
-
Graeme Jones is assistant manager isn't he?
Jesus Christ.
Bergara gone as GK coach too.
-
You can just see a few of the Belgian stars turning up for the first international break, taking one look at Graeme Jones & thinking "Who the fuck are you, you fucking bell?"
About 35,000 Evertonians did that every fortnight.
-
Graeme Jones is the personification of the old saying "it's not what you know, it's who".
Although that doesn't explain Martinez's rise
-
Who are Belgium playing next week?
-

Started reading in. Got two sentences in and decided 'Nah, don't have to read this shite anymore. Get in the bin.'
-
Bergara gone as GK coach too.
Bet he'll teach Courtois a thing or two.
-
Apparently, Ralf Rangnick was one of the finalists for this job but Martinez beat him out.
Rangnick must sit around all day wondering what he has to do to get a job ahead of Martinez since this is the second time this has happened to him. I guess tactical nous doesn't count for much on the market.
Edit: I feel bad for Ralf because he kind of seems destined to be under-appreciated forever. He might not have gotten us in with Lukaku and Deulofeu, but I think he would have been a much better manager for us overall and he would have finally received some well-deserved appreciation outside of Germany.

He's probably not helped that you can't read his name in anything other than a Scooby Doo voice.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160826/852c053482494a6320b8250d1da5fd67.jpg)

Thierry Henry to be one of his assistants.
Fair play to Roberto, he's realised that going forward was one of his weaker areas as a manager and has brought in Henry to rectify this. The real beauty is that this gives him more time to coach in his defensive philosophy, where he has a lot to share.
-
Bet he'll teach Courtois a thing or two.
Maybe Mignolet as well!
-
Graeme Jones is assistant manager isn't he?
Jesus Christ.
Plus don't forget Richard Evans the 'fitness coach', probably the easiest job in the Martinez setup.
-

That would be completely perfect if his name was Ralf Rangrick.
-
Reminded of that vid of Henry on MNF discussing Guardiola's tactics in a bit of detail.
He's served under the man who provides the model for possession football so the difference between this and Martinez's karaoke version will be apparent from day one. I don't think he'll stick it out.

It would have been for a $40m contract!
-
horrible defending for the silva goal. Brings back memories.
-
Hi-ho Silva. Martinez will be putting a syrupy spin on it to eager-eared Belgian journo's somewhere reet now.

Haha well still, it's Spain!most successful international side of the last 10 years
I mean I'm fairly sure he's not going to do well there but it wouldn't have been an easy first game for him
-
More concerned that another game passes and Lukaku hasn't scored.
I read somewhere he's only scored 6 goals in total this calander year.
-

Well Belgiums not by concern to be honest. Lukaku's form on the other hand is and it's pretty poor this year.
-

He'll be fine. He was shite towards the end of the season a long with everyone else. He didn't have a great Euros but he's only played one 90 minute game for us since his injury so he'll be a bit rusty. Once he scores one he'll be up and running again.
He's 23 and done it for years already, a dip is to be expected from time to time but there's nothing to worry about there.
-
Did anybody see poor old Martinez looking clueless on the line last night? Is way out of his depth again. How he got this job is mind shattering, what do the Belgian F.A. see in him , and Romelu's younger brother had a nightmare.
-
Good

To be fair on RM this guy is one of the worst footballers I've ever seen
-
It is a bizarre one isn't it?
The reason Mark Wilmots did so shite is because he couldn't get a team of very good individuals to play fluently as a team and as a unit, so that is what the next manager had excel on.
They picked quite possibly the WORST possible replacement, they will never play any differently at all for the time he is there.
I would be amazed if he even remains there for the world cup, as I doubt Belgium will even qualify with him in charge.
-
They should have gone for Ronald Koeman.
-
Apparently he aced the interview.
But then he's never had a problem with talking.
Also it's said that his frosty relationship with Mirallas and Lukaku was seen as a plus because Wilmots was judged to be too close to the players.
What they don't realise is that the relationship is frosty because they think he's rubbish rather than because he's stand off-ish with the players ;)
-
All that attacking talent at his disposal for him to waste with slow build up play. Grim to be Flemish.
-
They should have gone for Ronald Koeman.

This bit...
'At times players didn't look to fully know where they should be playing, and questions (already) will be asked of his tactics: Just who was meant to be sitting alongside Witsel? Why were the full-backs so wide? Why did the defence push so high throughout?
In his first match as an international boss, Martinez was found wanting. Certain members of the Belgian Federation could be forgiven for questioning if this is what they signed on for.'
Will he have them sorted for Cyprus? Drumroll......
-
Initially I was bemused by the appointment, but on reflection I hope Belgium lose badly to Cyprus and his contract is immediately terminated.
You don't get to set our club back like he did, suffer no consequences, and just move on to a cushier gig.
Fuck him.
-
'Belgium won a game despite having Roberto Martínez in charge! But it was against Cyprus!' The Guardian
Nasty!
-
The fool strikes again. He's fallen out with Naingollan - one of the best midfielders around - and won't call him up to his squads.
Can't wait for Belgium to get shagged at the World Cup.
-
The fool strikes again. He's fallen out with Naingollan - one of the best midfielders around - and won't call him up to his squads.
Rumours are that Naigollan like a cigarette or 10, as well as some of the other finer things in life...
If the above is true I can see why Martinez would fall out with him. Lots of managers would.
-
id laugh if Martinez wins the world cup with Belgium.

I'd cry

I wouldn't give a shit.

I miss bob

Scoring 2 and getting beat by just one. Better times man
-
Some classic Ross Barkley moments there. Leave him up field

What a horrible day that was. I do miss Lukaku though.

Halcyon days these.

I don’t even remember that game.
