Title: Everton Vs Sunderland aka Everton rejects
Post by: Macca77 on February 21, 2017, 04:57:22 PM
Yay!! Footy is back this weekend, all the players should be well rested after the little Dubai trip, Lukaku fit? Besic on the bench maybe? Near enough a fully fit squad which is a great problem to have for Koeman

Another sell out as well,  the old girl will be bouncing

Can't wait for this, especially after a 2 week wait. We really should win this comfortably, keep Defoe in check and they don't really have any other real threats. Hopefully the squad are refreshed after thier break and can kick on for the rest of the season by giving Sunderland a hiding.

Last time we played them at home it was 6- 2 including a Kone hat-trick. But Defoe scored a cracker at the Street End he needs watching closely.

They are a very very poor side so it should be a straight forward home win, but we dont normally do straight forward do we

I'm usually quite cautious but they're quite a poor team and poor teams tend to lose a lot. On the other hand we're quite a good team plus we are at home so I expect us to win.

This has a slow frustrating start written all over it. Shit team comes to get a point, we don't quite know how to up the tempo, they have a few good chances, fans get restless, 0-0 at half-time and a rocket from Ron means we run out 2-0 winners.

Man United gave Fellaini a contract extension last month so they can't be feeling too much like they were ripped off.

I suspect Besic is quite some way from even a place on the bench - I doubt if he will be seen in the first team at all this season.

I don't think we fans owe Moyes anything. He got a fantastic send-off ,I would say at least 90% of the crowd stayed behind that day .I didn't like the timing of his leaving but I still applauded him in respect of his work for the club.
But now he's fair game just like any other manager. I would love it if we put another nail in his coffin on Saturday. Wonder if the grim reaper will be there again ?

I was quite pissed off with some of his actions/comments since he'd been revealed as Fergie's hand pointed successor. But from Man Utd he has eventually now found himself at Sunderland fighting for relegation and instead of trying to get Everton's best players and acting like he's on his high horse, he has to make do with bringing in our fringe players like Gibson and seems to have brought a doom and gloom atmosphere to the so-called Stadium of Light.

Still, I don't mind if we boo Moyes, as long as it has the effect of being more intimidating towards him and the Sunderland team rather than abusive. Otherwise you can imagine MOTD or Sky having a go at Everton fans.

I think the reality is David Moyes means different things to different fans.

If you're like me and had the fortune to start supporting Everton at the end of the 80s, then all you saw was around 15 years of perpetual relegation battles and long-ball shite, albeit with an amazing FA Cup win in the middle of that.

We were fucking shite till David Moyes came along and turned us into a quality, respected side. One you could be really proud of. We may not have any silverware to show for it, but the Moyes era was one I'll always look on fondly for how it transformed the club and the foundations he laid for the future.

For older fans who saw the success of the 80s, or conversely younger fans who didn't see the misery of the 90s, I can certainly understand a different attitude towards the man.

Completely agree and one of the reasons why I'll defend him despite his comments after he left. The first season I remember going to with a reasonable amount of detail was  93/94 and for the next decade pretty much every season from Feb/March ended in hours of working out who might get what result in what upcoming fixture and what we'd need to do to scrape over the line and guaranteed at some point in the run in it felt completely hopeless. So to have someone take us away from that constant worry of relegation and transform us back into a respected good side who werent that far away from achieving something and left us in a position to aspire for better things was something I won't forget over a few comments and leaving us for the most successful club in English football.

That and the fact he did it with the club verging on administration and relying on 'loans' from someone who has now been rubbished in the country to keep us going over such a long period means I think it's harsh he gets some of the abuse he does get from our fans.

I can understand why people wouldnt applaud him back, afterall he got a great send off and did tarnish it for some with comments. But I think the fact that a lot would want to boo him is pushing it too far for what he did for the club in that decade.

It seemed like a panic move.

Sociedad are a perfectly decent club but by no means a "should be up there" club, so it was an unnecessarily risky job on the back of his failure at Utd.

Similarly here I think he's thought that he has to be back in work whereas he's likely to end up with 3 failures in 4 years since leaving us.

Don't like to put the mockers on us, as I'm sure we are all aware of how Moyes can kill a game and nick a point-or all three. Moyes has a very difficult task keeping these up. If we don't steamroller this poor Sunderland side I'll be more than surprised, but a lot more disappointed. This is a three points must, or we don't deserve to be in Europe.

In fairness a trip to gel the team, and get away from all the negativity probably isn't a bad idea. I don't think it could make things worse, and it might help a little at least. I don't go in for this 'they should be working down the mines or selling matches on the streets in fingerless gloves' man down the pub drivel.

But letting a group of people go who work at the club (presumably on relatively low wages) in the same week is awful PR.

Agreed, terrible PR and no one should be made to work the pit face for going AWOL on a football pitch in front of millions (or in some cases hundreds) but some of the best teams I've ever seen only needed a night together down the pub with the fans or a daft game of golf to 'gel'. Clough used to take his Forest and Derby teams out for fish & chips and promise them a week in Spain if they won owt and they were gelled tighter than a ducks arse in cold water. Same with Sexton's Chelsea when Osgood was scoring for team and Raquel Welch
I know that's the old days but maybe the threat of a week in Rhyl might do the job for the modern footballer.
Or a night with Nora Batty!

End of rant - have to go find me teeth.......

If I was one of our attackers I'd be thinking something along the lines of, "I'm literally itching to play this weekend...goals, goals, goals!"

If I was one of our defenders I'd be thinking more like, "not that bleedin Defoe again...g.."

Not that fussed with the idea of a deep defending Sunderland, more concerned about the effects of the break and possible complacency. If we're switched on we should really win comfortably.

LAWRO'S PREDICTION

Everton have not lost in the league since the Merseyside derby before Christmas - and they were unlucky to be beaten in that game.

But I just have a feeling Sunderland will get something here. They will have their chances, and I think they might find a way of picking up a point.

Prediction: 1-1

This is looking and has the promise of our best midfield since the 80s. Schneiderlin is so composed and calm. And then Gana and Davies like terriers getting everywhere ahead of him.

Lookman seems to have replaced Pienaar and Osman in terms of shooting ability. He needs to work on that.

Gueye playing further forward while Schniederlin sits seems to be very effective.

No coincidence that the goal came from Oviedos flank either.

They are the new Barry and Mc Carthy but younger and brighter. To be fair I think Oviedo has done ok considering it's him against every fucker down that side.

The half has been alright, we started well and put Sunderland under a lot of pressure but then they kind of got more and more into the game. Good to be 1-0 up and of course that changes significantly Sunderland's game plan. Let's just hope we can continue to play well and get a few more chances. We've done well to contain Defoe but we can never be too complacent. It helps having Schneiderlin in our midfield who can snuff out their attacks.

West Brom seem to be in a bit of form and are winning against Bournemouth, so we need to keep on our toes.

Whisper it but Mori had a very strong half for me, particularly in the air.

When Mori can read the attack, roam, and shut things down he is very good.  His style of play is very disheartening to the likes of Sunderland.  Shuts them down before they can even get a sniff.  It's when he has to play on his back foot that he spins around and falls on his arse.

The amazing part is, I expected it would be Davies getting forward all the time, but it's GANA buzzing through the box like a hornet.  He's fucking great at it, too.  With Schneiderlin in the side, we are so much less predictable and so much harder to defend against.

Weird comment on the BBC live feed:

Another one for MOTD later
Everton 1-0 Sunderland
Posted at 16:37
Jermain Defoe twists and turns in the Toffees area and fires a fierce effort which comes off the bar and appears cross the line before bouncing out.

Was the whole ball over the line?

Sunderland are edging closer.

Didn't look anywhere near over the line

Clearly YTS lad on the feed who doesn't know we now have goal-line technology these days.

Feels good to just get a routine win.

Gana showing he's a lot more than a ball winner.

Loving that midfield three we have at the moment.

Good professional job lads. Midfield's looking excellent. Would've like us to be a bit more clinical and put 4 or 5 past them, but no worries. Gana's well and truly back. Morgan's a man amongst men, and Ross continues his excellent form, controlling games.

It's shit like that that makes me think he can't be relied on. He was a centre half, on the left wing, facing his own goal, anyone with a brain would make sure they either kept possession or turned to play it down the line and out of play so you can get back in position. You don't play a 50/50 ball inside.

A decent win against a side trying hard to get themselves out of the quagmire they are in. This is the stage of the campaign where the bottom clubs have had a kick up the backsides and start becoming relatively harder to play against.

But on the whole we played well and our midfield looks a whole lot better than it did just 3 months ago, every one of them played a key role. Our wing backs are a lot more confident going forward. Great seeing Gana open his goals account. Sunderland looked tough to break down at times but we created quite a lot of opportunities. I've never seen us win so many corners in a game (or rather I've never seen the opposition concede so many corners in a game) but we could take more advantage of these opportunities.

It's very nice again to keep a clean sheet although Funes Mori and Williams will be thanking their lucky stars that Defoe didn't exploit more his opportunity when it was still 1-0. But still, wins breed confidence and clean sheets must breed confidence for our defenders.

That was a measured display of controlled football with the exception of a couple of scrappy periods. Ademola Lookman is a great prospect but shouldn't be starting ahead of Mirallas. Maybe Kev hasn't started the last few games due to the groin injury. We'll have to wait and see if that's the case, if he starts against Spurs or not next week.

Very impressive performances from Schneiderlin & Gueye. If they can maintain that level most of the time then the future looks bright. Schneiderlin probably has even more to offer - looks like he can control a game.

Decent to good performances from everybody else. Davies continues to impress. Lookman & Barkley struggled to make much of an impression but were OK.

The first half was better than the second.

Lookman has struggled the past couple of games I think. His honeymoon period is over, Mirallas should come in for him next game. He's done well for his age, but I think we're carrying him a bit. Needs to work on his shooting as well.

Because if you watch the game it's not about the creative passing and tricks it's about how he was controlling the game all over the pitch, picking out players and keeping control in tight situations. He allows players like Davies and Gana to express themselves.

Bollocks to the scores, did you watch the game? He makes things happen, he is confident on the ball, always looking to tidy up, pick a pass. etc

Of course I watched the game as did those reporters I imagine.

What did he make happen yesterday? All the other things are a minimum requirement. What did he do yesterday that was noteworthy?

Do you only class noteworthy as assists or goals then? You're version of what a good performance involves is simplistic to say the least.

Those aren't minimum requirements, especially when they allow players like Davies and Gana to attack and create like they did yesterday.  Had Lookman been more on form, we would have truly battered them.

The scores are an absolute nonsense. Don't even mean today but generally. They rarely bare any resemblance to what actually happened on the pitch. Barkley was good yesterday. Not outlandishly so but in the same way our other midfielders were. Controlled the game, set the tempo, started moves off. He looked a top player playing quite well

I mean, I didn't give Barkley a 9 like Gana or Schneiderlin.  You can spilt hairs between a 7 or an 8, but to argue anything less than that yesterday is just fucking ridiculous.  You're totally writing off what Barkley's role in the gameplan is.

What do you want him to do? Score from 40 yards with a back heel??

He controlled the game yesterday and thats more than enough for me.

For a creative player to have played well I would expect creativity. That's not just an assist or scoring. We know he can do it but he didn't yesterday. Therefore 6 or 7 out of 10. if everybody just passes it around well and looks comfortable on the ball then you're not going to get goals.

He needs to work on his corners though. For someone with his ability striking a ball we rarely look to threaten from any of them.

And "control" is what we needed yesterday.  Without being in the locker room, I am as sure as I can be that is what Koeman asked of him.  This is Ross growing into a future captain, in my view.

That's the best argument for starting Super Kev - getting Ross off corners.

His second touch in the first minute was a flick that took two players out the game and set Coleman free... We got a corner.

I'm not gonna go through the whole game

Barkley had a decent game. That's it.

There's really no need the constantly have this debate.

People need to stop going over the top with his performances now. It's becoming more infuriated than the people who won't give him credit when due.

Decent game, can play a lot better, but certainly wasn't poor by any stretch.

I think people can all agree with that?

He's an integral part of a team that is functioning well at the minute. The introduction of Davies and Lookman has taken the pressure off him, both in terms of the pressure he puts on himself and the pressure the fans used to heap on him.
He's no longer deserving of the level of scrutiny everyone used to give him because of this and it should be a help for everyone concerned moving forwards, especially with more squad strengthening in the summer.

Agreed. It's like you can't even say he had an average game.

I missed the first half hour when we apparently played best but for what I did see I wasn't blown away but Ross at all. He was OK though. One thing that did sticky in my mind was how he carelessly lost possession in the centre circle just before half time. We got away with though. The problem is that it's difficult to be objective. My own view, at the moment, is that if we were to play a team and Ross was on the opponent's side then I wouldn't be massively concerned about him. I stress - At the moment.

Daily Post gave him a 6 http://www.dailypost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-fc-2-0-sunderland-12657612

As did the Chronicle http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-2-0-sunderland-player-12657078

Goal.com 3.5 stars http://www.goal.com/en-gb/match/everton-vs-sunderland/2242011/ratings, the lowest of our midfielders apart from Lookman.

Nobody really getting very excited about his performance.

What did everybody think was so impressive?
Because he was fucking brilliant yesterday

MOTD is no measure for me to say how good he was for the game, but the commentator did at one point say that Ross was "a joy to watch when he's playing like this".

So whoever the BBC commentator was - he certainly thought Ross was very good yesterday.

Got to say that if that's Barkley playing "brilliant" he's really fell way short of that initial promise.

I was one of Barkley's biggest critics earlier in the season, but I am very happy with the way he's playing now. He's turning into a big version of Beardsley for me, integral in everything good we do with flashes of brilliance.

He looks much stronger and with it now than ever before. I think he's beginning to mature in his role.
