Title: When was the last time..
Post by: TSGun on October 15, 2017, 10:08:48 PM
..we were managed by a truly top class manager?

Been a supporter for over 20yrs and I'm not sure any of those in control in that time period fit the bill precisely.

How long has it been?

Big Joe was up there.  Wrong board, though.  Imagine us with the 1995 equivalent of Moshiri's money.

Imagine if Joe had been able to sign Tore Andre Flo like he wanted - and the other Norwegian player we were linked with the same time.

I can still remember the day Royle left like it was yesterday

Kendal and before him Catterick. Catterick would be hated on here because of his "lack of Charisma" (Koeman) and he was so aloof.

Did you not see the players he was allowed to sign?

Barmby, Speed, Kanchelskis, Short, Ferguson (on a perm). We'll forget about Barrett, Phelan, Thomson and Gerard though

Strange because our top class managers of yesteryear were only really top class with us, and all had strong links with the club and fans. Kendall, Royle and Caterick.
I really do think that we need a special manager that has some link to the club going forward. Whether it be Arteta, Unsworth, Ferguson or even Howe. Someone that knows what its all about.

Seen someone on twitter asking the question is Koeman the worst manager we've had since Walker.

I'm inclined to agree

He still needs to go tho

Tbf it was a much more toxic atmosphere the last few games that Martinez had us.

Kendall's third stint followed by Smith's was also pretty dull.

he wasn't always flavour of the month back then either though, was he

was it him that was roughed up outside an away game or was that someone else?

it was him that faced fans' wrath when he dropped Alex Young and then sold Alan Ball though.

but if it helps you to re-write history to suit your agenda against today's football fans, as if we're somehow different to any generation of football fan, then crack on

It's either Caterick or Kendall. For it to be Kendall three brilliant years would have to be enough to pretty much eclipse the rest of his career, unfortunately.

Kendall was absolute top class. Royle was a top class man who did a lot to give us back some respect. Moyes is the closest we have come since to top class (no you fuck off) but then fell short.

Harry Catterick was a world class manager & Howard Kendall was a world class player and both knew how to manage a football team. Difficult to pick who was better. Gordon Lee was the funniest and should have won trophies but couldn't manage a bizzies hat in Poundland.

Then theirs Billy Bingham, Walter Smith, Martinez, Koeman....next.

What the fuck is it with police mens hats and Poundland today?

Harry Catterick - ably assisted by Tommy Eggleston and Wilf Dixon

Howard Kendall - ably assisted by Colin Harvey and Mick Heaton

Johnny Carey, before the Catt, was a good manager

Colin Harvey did OK, as did Joe Royle

David Moyes did a decent job - but, alas, wasn't a winner

In my lifetime there are 3 standouts.

Kendal gave us glory

Royle gave us pride

Moyes gave us stability

Not a massively impressive list, bar Kendal, but once you've tasted heaven - nil satis nisi optimum.

It was just last decade when Moyes was here. And he got us fourth and pretty much kept us in the top third of the league when we didn't have any money after he'd inherited a squad that looked doomed to relegation. And he picked up, what was it, three manager of the year awards.

We all know he's shown his limitations since. But what so many of us forget is how well his strengths as a manager served the club during a perilous time. I'm not sure there was another manager in the world who could have done as well for Everton in that period of our history, when we were skint and so many other Prem teams were on buying sprees.

Even with no money, he built a fine squad foundation that his two deranged successors still haven't completely undone.
