The vultures are circling, lose this and we might as well put our passports away.

Struggling to think of any sort of line up right now

probably apprehensive but the roof will come off if we win, and the "Koeman out now" brigade will slink home to come back and try again, probably against Arsenal.

An evening of quiet moaning followed by quite loud derision upon their second and third goals awaits.

So the Everton curse will strike again, as Lyon record their best ever away win. You just know that's what will happen. Also some player who has never scored or hasn't scored in a while will score first or the winner.

Really annoying as it should be a group we should have comfortably finished top 2 in.

Still might like but we should never have let it get to this stage.

This could also potentially be a season changer, a convincing win, as unlikely as it is, under the goodison floodlights could be all we need to get us going.

Aside from the ďit was like this with Kendall before it took offĒ (which was utilised with Martinez too) what can you actually see in this deluded, stubborn fucktard of a football manager that stops you being part of the ďkoeman out brigadeĒ. If, and itís a big desperate if, we somehow get something against Lyon it doesnít automatically excuse this cretinous excuse of a coach any of his failings.
He should already be a distant memory. Atalanta was the disgraceful straw that broke the camels back for me. His comments afterwards said it all. Didnít prepare, doesnít care. Get fucking rid.

As for the game, Iím not sure I can be arsed with it. (Obvs Iíll go because Iím a fool)

I've got a ticket for this. Usually I am surprisingly quite a good omen when in attendance. Last time I went and we were beaten was Boxing Day in Martinez first season whenever sunderland did us 1-0

Would have thought he has no choice other than to play a strong side. Not sure if Jags could do 2 games in a short space of time though so perhaps Williams will be back in there. Think he will have to stick with Vlasic given how he is a rare in form player in this side

Would like to see Davies come in and play central with Gana. Schneiderlins form is concerning

I think Rooneys striker/10 days are done but he could offer a lot more from dropping deeper and being a more attack minded player to play alongside Gana or Morgan (he drops there anyhow half the time). Frees up sigurdson to play where he should.

Asked my lad earlier if he fancied going, he replied "you want to go?" I said "nah, was just offering to buy you and your mate there (playing fifa as they do) tickets, get you out of the house for a couple of hours..."  Pair of them just done a Beavis and Butthead laugh and I ceased to exist.

Interesting Brap, who was the manager with hardly a penny to spend who bought 99% of them players ? Take Moyes back as DOF,with Unsworth as manager until the end of the season. We have nothing to lose with the absolute shite we are watching this season.

The most positive note about Everton V Lyon I can think of:

Speedo Mick is halfway to Lyon and has achieved around half of his fundraising target so far for Alder Hey. That's around 350 miles he's walked up to now and he's closing in on Paris, which he expects to be interesting because he hasn't actually bumped into any gendarmes yet.

Top work!

I think fundraising is becoming the secondary motivation now for Speedo Mick, heís entering the realms of the ďNaked RamblerĒ.

I'd be surprised if he was tempted away from Southampton with a contract that contained plenty of get out clauses for us. We'll probably have to pay him the best part of £10m to disappear, only 18 months after paying the last idiot £10m to disappear too.

Stones aside, there's not a single (initial) signing post 2008 in there though.

We might not have had much money for the last 5 years, but his signings were more miss than hit during that period.

                     Davies            Gana

     Vlasic                Sigurdsson                Sandro

                                    DCL

I would have put Rooney in to start over DCL if I thought he could stay up there as focal point but I think he'll try to do too much and come to deep. I'm going with DCL's pace rather than Rooney's experience to stretch the opposition.
Davies and Gana should have enough fight in the middle of the park between them to let Sigurdsson do his thing.
I went with youth/experience/youth/experience at the back so as not to have two inexperienced defenders next to each other.

Put Mirallas in Lookmans position and put DCL UP top looks a good attacking team.

I know hes a bit like marmite but out of all of our players Miralles is probably the one that id have the most confidence in of getting us a goal from nowhere or in a one on one situation, hes also the most likely to frustrate but thats what you get I suppose, but id like to see him given a shot up front as at least he commits players and will run at them

Goodison under the lights would normally be rocking, I dont think Goodison can be arsed anymore

You know what if he went with a bold selection and some youth and they responded by giving us a decent performance and a win I think it would be rocking again. It doesn't take much for us to get onside again, we respond to a bit of positivity from the pitch and it feeds back, especially under the floodlights.

                   Vlasic DCL Sandro

There is zero protection from that midfield.

change Rooney for Ghana Gueye. your midefield contains the person who has been the worst player this seaso after Williams.. and probably responsible for not putting in a decent tackle that cost us a goal in the last 3 games, plus you still want to play with 2 holding midfielders, which has been really bad for us, they just both pass backwards, have no flair/creativity, and stop us from building attacks.. i guess fans think that MS and Gana, will eventually hit form...the system is not working, why keep beating a dead donkey?

No, I don't. But any fool can see that a midfield of Davies and Rooney isn't going to offer the defence (which is fragile at best) the protection they will need. Especially against a very good Lyon side.

Both lack positional discipline, and neither are particularly reliant in a defensive sense. Especially Rooney.

Point to where I have said both Gana and Schneiderlin should start? We may need two deeper lying midfielders against such quality opposition, but it doesn't necessarily mean it has to be those two.

You need to stop jumping to conclusions of others opinions. I've noticed it becoming a trait of yours.

             Pickford
Holgate Jags Keane Baines
      Davies   Gana
Lookman  Sigurdsson Vlasic

Would be a stop start game with that lineup. "Oh and that's the fortieth time Mirallas has been caught off side..."

Better than one in two goals per game at Olympiacos. ..but we've never really utilized him like they did ...so again it's down to opinion really ...but to say 'literally nothing to suggest' his ability  is a bit strong ...maybe since we played him out wide but hey ...interpreting how you see fit is all gravy and we badly need goals ...but it's all by the by as Koeman's pushed him out too.

And Besic was hands down the best damn centre back in the Hungarian league, but you wouldn't trust him playing there for us as plan A, would you?

We're not talking about Besic  (although id take him over the recent Williams games) ....we're talking about a striker forced out of position by countless managers ....especially when they needed goals ....midfield cover or defence we have plenty of cover all tried and all failed pretty much.
Strikers we've flogged every avenue all failed ageing Rooney too young DCL settling Sandro and an at times hapless Niasse  but Mirra has been frozen out by the fuckwit in charge when he has the second most career goals of any of them ...it doesn't make sense only to RK's ego.

I dont recall, i think it was for Jamokachi.. i have no idea, i cant recall. Not much sleep the last week, lol.

Hope Schneiderlins form recovers asap.

Having DCL on the wing is so bad, i've seen a few posters put that formation up, He's the only real number 9 we have, we need him in the middle to stretch the play.

Everyone on here seems to forget that Koeman has been bought a very expensive rifle but they haven't given him any bullets .What exactly should he do when in reality he has no centre forward ,every team we play know we have the fire power that would struggle to bust a wet paper bag . I truly feel for him .Not as much as us but I do .

He said himself that we were too reliant on Lukaku's goals and he wanted players that would score from other areas of the pitch. We got those players in for him several of whom were his choice. For one reason or another they haven't all worked out but he should still be able to get far more from this group of players than he currently is.

That's the worry at the moment, we look awful and totally devoid of any ideas and the players don't look like they know what they're meant to be doing and it doesn't show any sign of changing from one game to the next.

Glad to see the Gana Schneiderlin parntership broken up.

Yes?

I'd like to think he's sending a message to Rooney by leaving him out of the squad completely, but realistically Koeman's probably saying he's too good to be on the bench if he's being rested as a starter.

Yup, that's Cuco Martina.

Not sure Mirallas ever gives width or provides pace these days.

Vlasic will hopefully; he's certainly a strong runner, not sure if he's a whippet or much of a byline hitter, but we'll see.

He did say in the presser that Kenny was struggling for fitness and would be assessed. Baines canít play twice a week so someone needs to come in for him. Holgate at LB means Martina is only RB left!

Agree, glad heís dropped a DM and happy with mid/forwards.

It's all so static.

No movement whatsover when we have the ball.

Indeed, even without the ball our pressing is sporadic and token.

We used to ask "what do they do in training?" under Martinez.

Well, I really want to know what we do in training under Koeman, because slick, quick passing, pressing, getting to the byline, through-balls, and pass and move certainly seem pretty alien to our players.

Moshiri is already making stupid excuses for him. He isnt going anywhere for a long time. He'll get chance to sign another 3 or 4 number 10s in the next window while selling our best 1

'29 mins
Everton 0-1 Lyon
This is easy for Lyon, so, so easy. No pressure on the ball, time and space, nobody tracking runs. Tom Davies gets frustrated and barges Bertrand Traore over with a bodycheck.

Everton have got to change something.'

We've grown into the game well, considering confidence will be on its arse and the early blow. Klaassen has gotten better as the game has gone on, Davies and Mirallas have been energetic and Williams has been solid. Keep up the tempo of the second half of that period and we'll get chances.

Less said about Martina the better really, he evidently has no left foot, so it's an odd one to have him out there.

Klaassen isn't concerned with getting on the ball. His game is all about off-the-ball movement and creating space, either for himself or for his teammates (see Rooney's goal against Stoke for a prime example). There's a time and place for that but unfortunately, it's not tonight.

Missed opportunity not starting Sigurdsson, especially since his best performance for us came in the second half against Limassol where he played more of a central box-to-box role. Tough choice between Rooney/Sigurdsson to replace Klaassen in the second half.

Rooney isn't even on the bench.

We do know that Schneiderlin can be very good and he hasn't been bad tonight actually.

Klaassen I am worried, maybe Koeman is right and it might take him a year to get up to speed. Really wanted it to work but he strikes me as the kind of AM that fits like a cog into a team playing well but isn't able to affect a team playing poorly.

Sold to Celtic in 6 months for a couple of mill; where he'll become a legend. Watch out Ross County!

Yeah I don't know what we should do really. Maybe 4-4-2 because Calvert-Lewin is like playing with 10 men at the moment. The problem is a 3 bank system would get torn apart but this Lyon team. They're too good in midfield especially.

Neither shit nor worldbeaters. Both very good young players.

Are they? Neither look ready for top flight football. Theres plenty younger who are. Ive no real clue how you judge potential but in terms of performances now they arent good even for youngsters. Im not overly convinced DCL will even be a premier league player long term

Been here before, difficult times again. Amazing how we can lose a couple of years in a few months. At the start this was another transitional season to hold our clear place of 7th. Now we face a relegation fight and maybe another 3 years to get back to last season. No idea who are the culprits, Koeman partly but surely someone else.  He and his coaching team will pay the price in a few days and we start from scratch.

Only Everton have the power now to make it a happy, drunken, singing, loving Toddacelli that staggers up the stairs with a spring in his step, hope in his heart and a glint in his eye for the missus.

Or a weepy, miserable, snotty Toddacelli who just wants to curl up into ball and go to sleep.

Needless to say, the missus will probably be rooting for Lyon.

Well at least the missus is happy!

Just saw the second half.

I think we would have made Allardyce proud of route A football. We just played long balls all along and our best chances came through free kicks.

We lost out it in the middle. Our players couldn't control simple balls there. Sig, Davies, DCL etc. just couldn't hold the ball in the middle of the park under decent pressure.

When we go down and the other team is just sticking to our players, we just don't have the players to take on the opposition and create a moment of magic nor do we have movement off the ball.

In short we are a team with zero imagination, creativity or movement and we are a boring boring side to watch.

Title: Re: Everton V Lyon
Post by: toffee_scot on October 20, 2017, 04:11:49 AM
There was quite a bit of fight from many of the players, but morale is very low so it is very difficult to play as a cohesive team at this time.

At least Koeman tried to be positive with the starting lineup and substitutions, however there is no justification for playing Martina, I can't believe how atrocious a player he is. Koeman won't be sacked because Moshiri will see this as an 'expected' defeat against a very good French club and because we did play largely better than against Brighton.

We can use the Europa League now to experiment a bit, especially giving fringe players a go and rest some of our other key players for other important games.

I'm concerned about Davy Klaassen though, he is struggling a fair bit, I think he might have to go out on loan to another club in January, simply to play more football and rebuild his confidence before returning to Everton for preseason, maybe in a league which is not quite as challenging as the Premier League but one that is better than the Dutch Eredivisie.

We are so scared that everything that goes wrong leads to panic. When Lyon lost the ball tonight there was no panic they were ready to break the minute they got it back.

I like a lot of our young players but there's too much on them to turn this round.  Davies is trying too hard for a start as is Holgate. How fucking massive is Coleman for us? Hell a poor Baines isa big miss.

Feel really sorry for the new signings especially attacking ones like Klaassen, Sandro and Sigurddsson, this is a horrendous time to be trying to establish yourself in a new team.

None of us knew the absolute terrible battle with depression he was going through. I sincerely hope that no one you ever care or you yourself about goes through such an ordeal. I'm not a sensitive snowflake type but in all my years on here that is the most misguided thing I think I've ever seen posted. As ever, pretty grim stuff from Everton

Lyon had much more quality and they strolled through large periods of the game I felt

We did show a bit of heart and passion which is nice to see but confidence is so low in this team

Dom didn't have a sniff against the 2 beasty centre backs of theirs. Another frustrating night for Davy Klaassen and Sandro when he came on

Encouraged by the improved set pieces of Sigurdsson, the overall quality of Vlasic and I thought in little bits that Lookman was good

Thought Michael Keane was poor, particularly in his distribution

Fair play to Ashley Williams for dragging us back into the game by working out that alehouse tactics to put them off their stride was our only way in. That got the crowd up when he started the brawl and then was a great header from him

Pity we didn't see it through. Hard to see where it is going to turn round for us. I think Koeman will be gone within the next few games. This season is essentially a write off already

Abysmal and disgusting comment. I know some close people including relatives who have tried (and thankfully did not end up dying) and I would never ever wish anyone and their loved ones to ever be in a situation like that. I hope the ref does and i hope the club ban the prick in the crowd who was throwing punches while carrying a kid

Oh, was he?

Bellend.

Everton will probably get banned from football for life and jailed, or something.

He won't be, he'll be in the boozer doing a few lines now buzzing off himself

He'll be well chuffed, he's even got a mention on the BBC.

Quote
Williams had barged into Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes moments before his equaliser, sparking a melee behind the byeline in which an Everton fan - carrying a small child - appeared to push a Lyon player.

Looking to the left slightly then looking back down the world feels like its caved in proper sorry frown.

Biggest game of the season last night. Baines should have started to give us the balance we needed and Rooney should have been available too.

Whoever did the scouting on Lyon should be shot. Their two centre halves are both man mountains so to put a young lanky lad up against them on his own and then play long balls up to him was just suicidal.

Everything is wrong at the club at the minute. The manager is trying everything from week to week and nothing is working. Signs of desperation and it's not good.

Inclined to give Koeman the benefit of the doubt on Baines.

Baines struggled to pass a fitness test against Brighton and only played on with painkillers. Possibly best to give him a rest given his age and importance.

Didn't know he had fitness issues. I suppose this is what happens when you have a squad of 25 players and only one of them has a left foot. That fact alone means someone deserves to be hauled over the coals.

Neither shit nor worldbeaters. Both very good young players.

This is a real problem with our fans.

If a young player looks good he's the next big thing, then when he ultimately hits a wall or doesn't run every game - he's shit.

I must admit I am veering towards Holgate not reaching the levels we hoped he might if he carries on this current trajectory. He's not a natural right back and not ready to be a centre half yet. I think he, like a few of our lads, needs to be playing regular football a level below where we are at the minute. To hone their game, build them up, get them experience and grow into young men. Too many of them still look like young boys at the minute and are getting exposed most weeks, which isn't great for their development.
We have a really talented young group that are being asked to mix it every week at the top level and it's not working either for them or for us.

Yeah as much as he is to blame for a lot of things, he consistently said he was a left sided CB (with capability to play at LB) and a main striker short of having the squad he needs.

Yes I get there are other issues around width and pace, but I genuinely think having the left sided cb and a striker would have gained us more points this season, I'm sure of it. Easy to say but a proper experienced striker occupying the defenders probably gets us a positive result against them last night and Burnley. Still not perfect but less of a crisis. Then with Coleman and Bolasie back we can then add the variety.

I don't want to be a Koeman apologist but I feel sorry that he was let down a bit with transfers. He is to blame though for not using Lookman and Davies more and the energy they bring enough
