Unsworth: Beni loves a tackle

Everton's interim manager David Unsworth says that he had no hesitation in bringing young midfielder Beni Baningime to start against Chelsea in the League Cup tonight.

He did very well. I'd never heard of him before and got him mixed up with that Sambema or whatever his name is.

He has a nice second touch. Several times he received the ball and I thought he wasn't aware of an immediate danger but he totally was. A subtle nice second touch away from danger then gives it.

Who hasn't though? It's a clean slate now for everyone, but I'd still have a fit and firing Schneiderlin and Gueye over anyone else in that position.

Bizarrely you'd think gueye would massively suit that second half tactic and not so long ago schneiderlin had amazing stats for tackles and breaking play up

If they came back to form under unsworth we look in great shape mf wise

I'd begin by rewarding those players who did a job tonight and let those who should be doing well sweat and work for it. Neither Schneiderlin nor Gana deserve it at present.

Yeh, I’m thinking that the type of player who ‘becomes ill’ overnight before a big game isn’t really Unsworth’s type of player. I may be wrong.

His face rings a bell.
Love that joke

Quote
A man who was born with no arms wished to seek employment. Fearing nobody would want to hire him with his obvious disability, he thought he'd answer a help wanted sign he saw posted at his church. He rang the bell at the rectory and when the pastor opened the door he was moved with pity. He asked, "What can I do for you, my son?" The man said I've come to answer your help wanted ad. The pastor became concerned and said that ad is for a bell ringer. He stammered that he didn't think he'd be able to handle the job. The man pleaded and said won't you give me a chance so I can show you what I'm capable of? The pastor relented and hired him. The time came when the church bell had to be rung. The man made his way under the bell, took a running start and threw his body against the bell which resulted in a booming "BONNGGGG" as soon as the vibrations subsided, he took another running start and threw his body into the other side of the bell with the expected result of "BONNNGG" . . . and so it went. Now our armless friend was at the job for several months to the delight of the pastor. One day the guy was running late and in his haste he ran up to the belfry and got his running leap at the bell without first getting under the bell. As he ran right off the side of the tower he screamed. Everyone from within the church filed out and just stared. Finally somebody said "poor fellow, does anybody knows who he is?" To which came the answer from someone in the back . . . "I don't know his name, but his face sure rings a bell."

And

Quote
The next day, the dead bell ringer's twin brother comes in for the again vacant bell ringer position. He also has no arms. They lead him up to the bell tower, he runs at the bell, trips and falls to the sidewalk below.

The same two guys walk by.

The first asks, "Do you know him?"

The second guy responds, "No, but he's a dead ringer for the guy we saw yesterday."

He's nowhere near Gueye or Schneiderlin when they decide to turn it on but he looks an able deputy. Much more reliable than Besic.

Just a shame we don't lack a hard working tackler in this midfield, we desperately need a progressive passer since schneiderlins head fell off for some reason.

Played really well last night.  Didn't look out of place at all.

Don't expect him to start Sunday though and there's nothing wrong with that.

We need Gueye and Schneiderlin to come back in to form and they deserve a chance at that under Unsworth.

Beni will act as an able deputy when needed.

We've got some great youngsters on the books haven't we? Really exciting future ahead with Davies, this Beni chap, Lookman*, etc.

Add to this the fact we have got Pickford, Keane, Sandro and Klaassen (once they find their feet) who are all 24 and younger, we've got great potential in the team.

*I hope Lookman decides stay, give him minutes and let him play. Same goes for Barkley too, him signing would be a big boost for the club

Hopefully his performance will act as a wake up call to both as they have been really poor to date but have been relatively secure with their own positions in the team, particularly under Koeman. Gueye must be feeling the more vulnerable as he is the most limited footballer of the 2 we currently have in midfield and I think Schneiderlin has much more ability

It does look good, although I disagree about Klasseen, I think his days are numbered especially considering the new manager comes in and despite a senior withdrawal picks an U23 player and he didn't even make the squad. Things move on fast in football and you'd could easily argue hes dropped even further down the pecking order. Wouldnt be surprised at all to see him go out on loan in Jan, depending on who the manager is.

Yeah I suppose that's looking likely. I'm just jumping aboard the positivity train about it all.

I still think he might make it. He needs runners around him, and good movement off the ball I think, which we have lacked all season because a lot of our players prefer the ball to feet. I'm not giving up on him after a dozen appearances.

Plus Schneiderlin and Klaassen is not like for like

To be honest im losing track of where Klaassen can and cant play? I thought he would have suited a 3 in midfield as by all accounts hes more of a box to box midfielder, similar to Davies.

Yeah I think he looks to be most similar to Davies. So in Koeman's tactic of 2 holding DM's and a number 10 neither really fitted in this season. He might have done better in the system we seemed to have last year where we had Gana and Davies as the runners in midfield and then our number 10 (Barkley) played from the left. But then we've tried putting Sig there and it's not worked.

Ah to be a football manager eh?

Going forward really he problem is lack of youthful defenders from a squad POV, striker as well of course but no need to go over that again.

Baines, Williams, Jags, - 30+
Coleman - badly injured
Holgate, Kenny - young, unreliable
RFM - badly injured and unreliable

Keane - jury's out but good age. Slow unfortunately.

Just not good enough.

We still haven't seen Holgate with a run at CB under new management.  I want to see that before we write him off, there's a good player in there.  Think Funes Mori can still be a solid #3 CB and left-sided "3 at the back" option, too.

I was wondering if you could turn Holgate, Keane and Funes Mori into a decent 3 at the back system, with Keane in the middle.

They all have their issues, but when their forces combine, they could have a surprisingly good balance.

RWB in a "3 at the back" is clearly Holgate's highest and best use, at least from what we've seen.  Though we still need to see Mason play in a standard 4, I think.

I wonder how that would do with Coleman back, and if we could make do with a non-traditional LWB in place of Baines?  Something to play around with, anyway.

I was wondering if you could turn Holgate, Keane and Funes Mori into a decent 3 at the back system, with Keane in the middle.

They all have their issues, but when their forces combine, they could have a surprisingly good balance.

That would be the worst I really hope this never ever happens. Penalties and left for dead galore

I know it's crazy, but maybe, it's crazy enough that it just might work.

I don't personally think Holgate is all that at the minute really. He's not big or strong enough to play centre half, he's no right back, he's okay at right centre of a back three but we've hardly seen him there to be honest.

If the lad was ever going to push on it was while Coleman and Mori were injured and with two ageing centre backs needing to be rested. He's not done enough so far at right back nor centre half to suggest he should be playing more often.

Granted he's young and will hopefully improve but I'm not as enthused about him as some of the other kids coming through.

I don't really see it with Holgate either to be honest.

Nice on the ball and that but his defending can be really, really poor.

Used to think he was pacy but he seems to have lost a yard or 5
