Title: Crystal Palace v Everton - Sat 18th November - 3pm
Post by: D15TIN on November 08, 2017, 11:07:16 PM
I know this is early, but bored in work

Think we need to stick with the XI that played the last 20-30minutes against Watford, Rooneys got to have a spell on the bench now. This is a good opportunity to end our poor away form, got to avoid defeat and put together a run of form with West Ham at home after this.

Pickford

Kenny Jagielka Keane Baines

Gana Davies

Lennon        Lookman

Calvert-Lewin

Niasse

1-0 Niasse

Townsend and Zaha are the main threats for us with their pace, contain them and think we may scape a win if our Oumar polishes his ass again.

I'd keep lookman and Lennon and even dcl on the bench as they can change a game if needed whereas others can't really

Id go

Pickford
Kenny Jagielka Keane Baines
Baningime
Davies Sigurdsson Gueye*
Rooney
Niasse

*Gueye is in by skin of teeth tbh. I couldn't think of anyone else

I think both Gueye and Davies are in by the skin of their teeth, Davies was absolute shite against Watford
we better have Vlassic and Lennon on the bench, in fact I would start Vlassic instead of Davies.

Sort of donít know what Iím doing here. Want one sitting and two energetic fellas, and I want I guess Niasse on the pitch cause man scores goals so thatís like a fluid top 3 that presses and ya rooney false 9 looking for Niasse and sig to get beyond him or Lennon on the break.

I think that team gets beat and hopefully unsie has more of an idea than me!

Think we have to see lookman from the start. As erratic as he is he's also probably our biggest attacking threat.

Mirallas and Schneiderlin to start for me.

Should always start the players who have shown the most attitude and commitment so far this season and these two have been top notch.

In fact I would sell the entire squad and build a team around these two.

Prefer seeing Niasse on the subs bench and coming on around 60 minutes to be energetic and push their defence and confuse the shit out of everyone.

Would like to see something of Sandro too.

I'm just gonna say we can't set up like we did against Leicester. I know that's pretty obvious, but we're up against loads of counter attacking pace. I'm fully expecting a goal against like the first goal Leicester scored.

I hate to say it, but we really have to set up defensively for this one. Two holding mids who stay in position with a back four. Palace may be dead last but they have a certain style of play that can rip our back end apart if we're not careful.

Realistically I'd be happy with a draw. Sad times, but that's reality.

Massive game this one. We get beat and we are back to square one with a damaged ego. If we win, we could put a run together and before you know it we will be in the top 10.

I don't think this is a game for Kenny. Palace will get the ball out wide to Zaha get him one on one with him. For this reason, we need to play it very tight in the game, otherwise we will lose, which is why i think Holgate has a better chance. With Palace, if you stop the wingers, you stop the goals, as they won't score from any other way. From what i have seen of Vlasic, he just isn't great at tracking back and doing his defensive work, which won't do in this game.

I would go with this:

           Pickford
Holgate Keane Jags Baines
      Gana Bani Davies
Lennon              Sigurdsson
               DCL

A workaholic team with bags of energy to scrap a win.

I went to their game away at Spurs with a mate last week, and they really should have won that game as Spurs just didn't turn up.

One thing I noticed is that whilst they have width and pace going forward, they defend incredibly narrow. If we had anybody at that game then they'll have noted how much space Spurs fullbacks got in the final third.

I'd like to see us go 5 at the back and mirror what Spurs did to them, something like:

                        Pickford
       Holgate     Keane     Jagielka
Kenny                                      Baines
         Banningeme Gueye Davies
                 Rooney   Niasse

Good to see. I really like Kenny, but I still think this is a game to take him out of the line of fire. Zaha is the most fouled player in the league for a reason, and we need a player with a little more experience in there.

Kenny in the home games is a great option, but away from home he needs to be protected.

Yeah Holgate gets done on the regular himself. Did well against Sane though if I remember correctly?

I think stick with Kenny while heís hit form, and put Lennon on that side as well to double up.

Baines and Vlasic or Lookman on the other.

These are dogshite but have turned it around a bit and will fancy themselves at home against us. If they beat us they drag us right into it.

To be honest, I dunno, donít really fancy us here with our current away record. Draw wouldnít be terrible but every win is gold dust atm in my opinion.

Keep Rooney Williams and Davies on the bench for me ...they have been way out of sorts. ...get Vlasic back in and give Sandro a run ....But Rhino will stick with the norm narrow start then attack either when behind by a goal or after the hour .

Errm yeah itís a fair question not his biggest fan myself, but at the same time hes one of the few with quality on the ball and a threat from both individual bits of ability or by being part of a move.

I do sort of think weíre going through what like 3 united managers went though which is like recognising his quality but slowly seeing that heís actually a bit difficult to use at this point of his career despite his obvious quality and star factor.

Ultimately - capable of threat, and we lack that almost entirely, so he has to play regardless.

If these are "dogshite" with Zaha, Loftus Cheek and Benteke then I don't know what we are ? Hodgson is slowly getting them organised and a point would be a decent result, we were lucky to get three last week against Watford, if Cleveley hadn't missed we would still be in the drop zone.

We should be aiming for all 3 points against the bottom team. One point will just confirm that we are at their level and the reality is although we are playing poorly atm we are able to do much more with the squad we have. Must go for the win and I think we will win it.

Of course we should be aiming for three points, nobody would dispute that and we must go for the win but still maintain that a point is a realistic outcome given that we are no better than them on current form
and they have hone advantage.

Yes, it is a sad state of affairs, agree entirely but as I said, where it not for a penalty miss we would be second bottom and yes, home advantage does play a significant part.

Come back from the break stronger as opposed to the usual square one.

They were the last team we beat away in the league.

Yeah, been more of a bogey side at Goodison. Since they came back into prem we've played 8 times, won 2 (both away, drew 4 and lost 2 (both 3-2 at home)

We should be aiming for all 3 points against the bottom team. One point will just confirm that we are at their level and the reality is although we are playing poorly atm we are able to do much more with the squad we have. Must go for the win and I think we will win it.
Im sure we will go for the win, a draw wouldn't be the worst result away from home though - provided we then followed it up with a home win against west ham, need to start a run of good form

We need a point.  And we need to set up to get that point.

It blows to say this but we need to just get any result on the road no matter who we're playing, and then take our chances at home to get 3 points. It's just where we are right now. If we do this we'll slowly work our way up the table and be fine.

This game scares me though. Palace play a way that can rip our back end apart and only have 30% possession.

First priority in this (and the upcoming league games) should be clean sheets.

Itís impossible to go from not playing well at all, to suddenly start thinking of dominating matches etc.

Weíve gone 0-2 down in all four of Unsyís matches so far; this canít continue.

Be solid and give ourselves a more than good chance of getting something out of all of these games.

Bolasie was back on Monday, I think Seamus took part in some light training with Ireland. there's pictures on the internet. Not heard anything on Ross, Can't see him coming back.

Probably just before Christmas before Bolasie, Coleman and Barkley return.

Also I know he's not as highly rated but considering lack of options in defence, there seems to have been no update with regards to Funes Mori's progress.

I expect coleman to be fine, he's a fighter and wont shirk any challenge or anything like that, Bolasies probably more of a worry as he's a sprinter and could easily pull up again

Doesnít it take 2 years to get back to Ďfull healthí if you get Bolassieís injury? I think Falcao is only just back this year after 2 years in England totally goosed.

Would be interested in seeing other players with similar injuries and their career trajectories but I imagine it wouldnít make very pleasant viewing.

I think Ross isnít even injured personally. Back just in time for Jan yeah 🙄

No idea when Coleman or FM are back. Coleman back kicking a ball though.

Totally dependent on the skill set. I think Bolasie is going to have a really tough time, the way he plays involves so much shifting of weight and putting strain on the joints.

Falcao took so long because he moved through 3 different leagues and 4 teams straight after the injury. He never got to settle into his game and get his fitness/ sharpness back. He's fucking boss now like.

Vlasic is by no means a complete player but he's shown enough in terms of pace, dribbling, balance, and vision to be one of our starting wingers. His age and potential make him even more of a no-brainer. At the very least, he should be picking up 30 minutes off the bench.

Unsworth has been such a great man manager at the U23 level, working with whatever we need him to (like Niasse, for example). I'm surprised at how poorly he's handled some of the first team squad management decisions since he's been in charge.

Think unsworth has definitely attempted to turn to his senior members of his squad to get us out of this rut, which makes sense. However I would have to agree with you on the Mirallas statement.

That fella has needed showing the door for 3 years, canít believe heís still here let alone being picked.

It's only a temporary thing. I doubt he'll get the job permanently. Then all the players should be given a clean slate and prove themselves worthy again. Just like the new manager.

My preferred 11 from the players available (given that kev and morgan have sorted their heads out and got on board) would be:

                Pickford
    Kenny Keane Jags Baines
Lennon Schneiderlin Gana Mirallas
                 Niasse

I reckon we could nick it if we just keep it tight, get into them and be patient. It's really hard to call though and any result wouldn't surprise me so i'm ok with a draw, quality of the opposition aside we need stability atm

That's fair tbh, I've never really understood how some fans can't see that he's essentially an empty head footballer. He's only in for his experience but I would plan to replace him first after 60 mins, probs with Calvert-lewin.

Looks like we're not on TV tomorrow @Evertonian in NC (https://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=3784) Only on Gold. And they're only showing one live game now at a time I see to force people to pay the extra $50. Bastards.

Y, for us in the States, we shouldn't be surprised. We pay these huge cable companies $150 a month... NBC gives us a taste of every Everton match every week, just to pull it away and ask for MOAR $$.

F**k off.  Is there such a thing as "cord cutting" back in Blighty for our local Blues?  I'm ready to make the move on that... the only reason I pay these bastards was for Everton.  I don't really need HBO - HBO can eat a ****.

I'm happy to listen to the official site audio from now on, COYB, rant over.

Pickford Kenny Baines Keane Jags Schniderlin Gueye Lennon Davies Lookman Niasse
In theory should be solid and tough to break down which is probably the right move.

Davies given license to roam forward and probably hope that with the pace of Lennon, Lookman, and Niasse that we can hit them on the break.

Looking forward to this!

That's a pretty horrible team but maybe that's the plan?  Looks like he wants pace to counter palace's obvious strengths but with some solidity behind learning from the Leicester experience. Can't see where any goals are coming from though. I reckon it'll be cagey for the most part, they'll score then Unsworth will throw it all out the window and run back to Rooney and Sigurdsson to save something.

Lennon Niasse Lookman tomorrow.

Benni and Besic joining Vlasic in the u-23s

That is a real shame, and quite bemusing.

Maybe the Big Joe rumours are correct after all.

I thought Baningime was doing well, especially with his positional discipline.

And Vlasic was probably our standout performer under Koeman, strong running, busy, direct, good passing.

They have actually been the two main players, along with Lookman and the incomparable Niasse, that have given me a glimmer of hope this season.

If Benteke starts it might actually play in our favour.

Hodgson has worked hard to get them drilled into playing without a striker, but rather two wide front players. If they try to switch system to accommodate Benteke then it might break down that organisation.

It's a very important game this, especially where Unsworth is concerned. A good performance and a win could see a lot of foundations being laid for the future, or obviously not. If we lose or play badly today, I think we'll have a new manager by the end of the week.

A part of me wants Niasse coming off the bench though, but hopefully that's where he'll be coming from once we buy a decent striker in Jan. That's not a slight at Niasse, I just think he's better option for us off the bench.

spot on in the prem now you need speed in defence so you can play I high line or sit back with us its all fucked up we cant play high up as we lack speed to get back and we cant sit back as are left and to some point right mid don't fall back to let the 4 defenders sit in a tight 4

i really like Unsworth as a manger, however today has finalised why he isnt right for the role for me. Im A UEFA A coach and i'm obviously no where near the level of Dave. But, i do understand the fundamentals of tactics and how he has chosen to set up and how his asking the team to press is a real concern. Against a team like Palace, under no circumstances should you be be initiating pressing when the team is deep into you half, he is then asking for the centre halfs and centre midfielders to play long balls into the striker.

Surely, you should be looking to control the game, if it wasn't for bad keeping and a dive we would be 2 nil down.

The thing is, there's not a whole lot of quality in the middle of the Table.  Won't take much adjustment to get to around 10th.  Right now, we are in dumpster fire mode and still 15th.  Confident this squad gets by with almost any competent professional.

Weve been outplayed week in and week out. Is it a lazy arguement to suggest our average points per game probably wont continue at this "high" level if the level of performance doesnt pick up.

That's a different argument. We are where we deserve to be because even though we're shite we do possess some decent players who can keep us in games.

I think that was my point really. That people talk about being in trouble if it gets worse while the reality of the performances is that we are already in desperate trouble.

I know its not popular but Allardyce has a great record in these situations and Dyches burnley are winning again. We maybe need to cut our cloth accordingly

Actually thought there were several players who did well today. Lennon, JJK, DCL, Niasse.

But Schneiderlin has soiled his underpants on too many occasions to keep getting chances.

Keane changes the entire structure of our side at both ends of the pitch, forwards get isolated as we can't push up. We drop deep because he's so easy for quick forwards to get around.

Should be Unsworth's last match for us.

Crystal Palace have been decent at home, they beat Chelsea not so long ago. They have very similar issues to us really, weak up front (Benteke has been out for most of their games) and leaky at the back. Not to mention fragile confidence.

It was our performance that was the first half looked a lot like the Koeman ones where we had no coherent plan in the final third. Plus ropey in the defence too.

It really shouldíve been Unsworthís last game vs Watford.

Unsy has a thankless job on his hands.  It's pretty clear that precious few of the veterans (Lennon, maybe Jags and Bainesy) give him any respect whatsoever, plus he is having what little authority he has publicly undermined.  He has to walk a fine line between putting out a legitimate, first-division XI and standing up for himself and maintaining some iota of order and discipline.

I think he's doing as well as can be reasonably expected under the circumstances.

Oh I see. Maybe. The energy you see from Davies and Niasse (mainly) I think is misleading. It's pseudo-pressing which is not sustainable. Everyone has to do it and understand it. It's bloody difficult when

1. The team changes
2. The defence drops so deep
3. We can't keep possession when we do get the ball

It won't improve properly til we get a manager in with specific ideas who can drill the players day after day.

Unsworth's just fire fighting in a very difficult situation, and somehow we've blagged 4 points from the last two games based on enthusiasm and not much else.

None of these players are going to look good until we get a shape and a way of playing that is robust and repeatable.

A few seem to have an attitude problem which won't be helping dressing room morale either. Shipping the under-performers out the door in January to get fresh blood in might be a necessary way to move forwards.

Clearly steps across him and it's soft as can be, but there's clear contact and attempt to unbalance.

Ref had ideal position to see Dann's movement and that's what he was watching. If he was watching Niasse, he'd have seen it was quite soft.

That sounds nice in theory but it's not that straightforward. It's not like Unsy, or Koeman before him, have no specific ideas that they are trying to implement, that they think will work to win football games, and that they are working on in training. Of course they are, that's why they get paid a shit load of money.

Our problems to me seem to run deeper than figuring out the right formation and game plan and I'm struggling to be honest to know exactly what it is that needs fixing.

1st goal he was the weak link. 2nd goal, he should be cutting out cross at front post.

Those were only the ones they scored from, he let Benteke in behind a couple of times, plus several others.

At this point this is a good result. Don't care how we get points on the road, just get them.  A point next weekend and then Come back home and grab 3 and we'll be fine.

In my opinion we just need to not lose a game up untill the derby. Hopefully the players can build some confidence and then we can actually show up for it.

I'm talking generally not about today as such. He's been poor to average but any defender would struggle to settle in this team right now. A quicker partner would benefit him greatly

Yep. The consensus has been that Koeman was a shit manager, so all we need to do is get a decent manager and weíll be back in contention to finish 6th.

Doesn't matter who's alongside him, opponent chooses who to isolate or focus on.

As I said before he's a good defender, very good passer. He just has a weakness and it's constantly exploited.

Jagielka and Pickford are trying to rescue a situation that shouldn't have got as far as them. You can't always cut out every cross and sometimes you'll get caught out, but this is simple ones on regular basis. It's not all his fault, he's just not quick enough.

Back a couple of years and you'd be playing big lumps and he's in his element. But with quick players and movement, he's someone you have to carry or cover.

Keane can't be what he's not. He's not blessed with pace and alongside others without any pace either side he's going to be the one looked at to provide it due to his age but it's not him. Let's see what he's like next to a younger left back and centre half before writing him off. Although I do think he has been poor so far, like many others.

First goal is another example of Pickford being let down by his defence. Conceding a point blank chance in the box right at the start, he makes a good save and then nobody is alive to the rebound. Atrocious defensively.

honestly this is really on Koeman and Walsh. I don't know how you can think in the modern game you can get away with a lack of pace at the back. Unless Keane is being bought as a 3rd or 4th choice centre half, I can't see the sense of committing to a set up where our defence can't get forward.

really think a main priority in the window has to be solving that problem, nearly as important as a goal scorer

we haven't been this bereft of pace at the back for ages. Coleman, Stones, Funes Mori etc. Funes is a crazy defender at times but credit where its due he had all the pace required to make up for errors. Right now we have none.

I agree. The whole recruitment looked very slapdash and without much thought. Keane is an 18 yard box defender which is fine if that's your game plan but it shouldn't be ours. However let's see him with better, pacier defenders around him. John Terry for example wasn't blessed with great pace but he always played with good athletic players around him.

Obviously when the window opens we might buy our way out or hopefully Bolasie, Coleman and barkley can make contributions but this team under this management. We'd be lucky to survive from the evidence we see on maychdays

'This was a frenzied occasion, furiously contested in slippery conditions and richly entertaining as a result, but it was also evidence as to why these teams have endured such miserable campaigns to date. When Jordan Pickford dived to push away Luka Milivojevicís vicious drive in stoppage time at the end, Crystal Palaceís last hopes of moving back within vague touching distance of the pack were gone. This was another improved display but the worry is if Everton, an awkward mishmash of a team at present, cannot be overcome, then who can?' The Guardian

Can't argue with that........

Keane is an average defender, why has no one else asked why no one else went in for him other than Everton?

Every other club could see he needs to sit deep as his pace is non existent and he isnít very good at reading the game.

Weíve brought a worse version of jagielka and jagielka is getting closer to 40 than 30 and has no legs.

Conceding 2 goals can happen regardless of performance. The frightening thing is they dominated us and could have had more too. I keep saying this but performances have been a hell of a lot worse than our shitty results. Everyone assumes it will get better but all evidence we are currently seeing says it will get a lot worse

Put Keane in a defence that plays to his strengths and he'll be fine. There's a lot of centre-halves out there that are very proficient, in a badly malfunctioning side, (us) he's still getting picked for England. We bought a lot of good players but they need a system they can play in.

Imho ...if we had two players in their pomp of form like Zaha and Loftus Cheek it would drag the rest of our shite up to scratch.

One of the shitiest ground locations in the PL, to stand any chance of getting back to Victoria within 2 hours from Norwood Junction you have to leave the ground ten minutes before the end.

You can normally get the train to/from Thornton Heath from Victoria. That line had engineering works yesterday which is why it was even more chaotic than usual at Norwood Junction.

They were running rail replacement buses from Thornton Heath but I imagine it would have been chaos there too. I just got on a local bus and went to Streatham, so it wasn't too bad.

Doubt we'll need to worry about going there next season (unless we're both in the Championship of course) !
