Title: Everton Vs Huddersfield
Post by: Macca77 on November 30, 2017, 06:30:50 PM
Can we make it 2 wins on the bounce, if we do and results go our way we could be 9th by 5.30 on Saturday

Crisis, what crisis?

Haven't been able to get to the last 3 games so looking forward to getting back to Goodison for this.
Narrow win I reckon.

How are we fixed for defenders lids?

Going to be very strange seeing the 2 Sams on our bench

Interested to see the team selection and the set up

4-3-3 I suppose

Aim for a clean sheet again first and foremost.

We need to build defensive confidence - we canít be allowing 15 mins spells of pressure like West Ham had otherwise teams will score against us - so that when under pressure there isnít the underlying panic that was bubbling under the surface.

This should be much harder than mid-week. Huddersfield are well organized and have recently given both of the Manchester clubs a hard time. Arsenal beat them badly last night but I still think they can scrap with anyone.

Itíll be interesting to see what Allardyce has in mind for this group of players.

I'd keep it the same, Niasse for Calvert-Lewin maybe. So important we get some consistency in our selections now

Can see a narrow victory, hopefully get us in the top half ahead of what is going to be a long 90 minutes at Anfield.

After that likely defeat, I think we have Newcastle & Swansea, which gives us a good chance of closing the gap on the top 8- what a difference a win makes!

Oh how different that result could have been if, instead of missing a penalty and hitting the bar, they had momentum after scoring one of those...

I think Baines for Martina and Niasse for Calvert-Lewin would be the only changes considered for this

DCL does seem essential if we are going to play long ball though by being the only attacking player with good Aerial ability

6 weeks or so puts us mid-January. We should really be looking to sign a left back January 1st. This was a known issue anyway and we're at the point we need someone who is capable of being 1st choice not just back up.

I like Baines, but I don't think he's a big miss anymore. Pace is not the be all and end all of it, but that is one position given the rest of the defence would be an opportunity to add some to the side.

Exactly.

Last night felt good and hopefully we can use that build some momentum but in terms of performance thereís still a long way to go.

Moyesí West Ham had all of the ball and very nearly scored a number of times. We were the better side over the 90 I think but we got a few bits of fortune and we huffed and puffed it again like Watford, but with more quality on the ball and more structure.

Better but a long way to go.

Gonna be tough to buy a full time, permanent replacement in January.

Might have to be a stop gap kind of guy. Which kinda sucks.

Other than garbage Garbutt, is there anyone else naturally left footed in the team who can play there?

Martina is a big risk who got away with it on Wednesday night because West Ham where tactically clueless.
Why any club would give him time to bring the ball under control and shift it onto his right foot is bizarre? Moyes clearly didnít do his homework as Martina was a sitting duck to disposes but he was given time on the ball.

There must be someone in the squad naturally left footed who can cover left back?

I did wonder this. Seems an obvious area for the opposition to try and exploit. Huddersfield have Collin Quaner who usually starts on the bench - heís a 6í 3Ē unit who plays on the right wing. Heís not very good but can see them using him as not only is Martina shite but heís also a shithouse.

Theyíre a much better organised, fitter, quicker and bigger team than us - but weíve got the quality. Gana or Davies to stifle Mooy and Rooney to run the show from deep.

Left back is a position we are just going to have to battle on with Martina I think

Your other option is to play a midfielder over there. McCarthy when fit would probably do a semi decent job,Besic probably more of a risk but is at least more comfortable on the ball than Cuco

I think Tom Davies might be the actual best option we have for there but centre mid is much more important at the moment and Rooney playing from deep with Gana and Davies doing the legwork looks like the best midfield combination we have stumbled upon all season

It looked like we had clearly made a decision to avoid the ball going over to that flank as much as possible on Wednesday, and when it Did, Rooney and Sigurdsson did seem to help out as much as they could on the defensive side

On the attacking side for Martina, he hasnít got a left foot so he would rather keep possession and pass it to someone else than risk losing it with a weak left foot cross it seems, which is probably something we are going to have to live with until Jan

As with Big Sam, probably best just getting behind Cuco while he is starting at left back. He is being asked to do so purely out of desperation. Heís a poor player giving it his all. Hopefully a left back is signed in Jan, or Garbutt is registered so that we donít have this left back problem again

Garbutt is like 33 and only played like 8 minutes of first team football in his life. I get it, heís shit. But would it have been the end of the world to register him once we realised we only had 1 actual left back on the books?
Title: Re: Everton Vs Huddersfield
Post by: therealdunc on December 01, 2017, 03:08:06 PM
Earlier post suggested McCarthy or Besic.

Forgive my memory but do either of them have a decent left foot?

Does mirallas have a left foot? Doesnít have a right one!
Then again, would you trust him to be disciplined and give the work rate at full back?

As much as I donít rate Lennon, you know he would be both disciplined and give the work rate if he was asked to drop into ful back.
With his limited ability going forward, I always thought Lennon would do well to reinvent himself as a full back much like Ashley Young.

This. Could he conceivably be any worse than playing a shit right back at left back. If we've got players like Besic in the squad who are fit but not good enough to get near the first team it seems bonkers to not register your U-23 left back.

Absolute madness isn't it.

He'll probably go back to being decent after a run of games as well. Now we've just gotta put Martina there and hope we can manage.

Even against West Ham, they targeted him and had a good period of pressure just putting the ball in his general direction.

Would've also have hurt to keep Robinson or Connolly here instead of shipping them on loan?

Kind of seems that it shouldnít work but for whatever reason it did

Both Rooney and Sigurdsson looked much improved and in turn so did the rest of the team

Rooney is naturally better at tracking back than Sigurdsson I think and provided good cover at left back, which Martina needed. Because he was operating from deep it meant that he didnít have to do too much running to get there

I kind of wrote Rooney off weeks ago if Iím being honest. My thoughts were that we could only benefit from his finishing so he should be playing as an out and out striker. Have to admit I was wrong

Heís the most decorated player at the club, has the most honours to his name, is the record England and Manchester United goalscorer and I believe 2nd for all time Premier League goals. With this has come lots of experience and knowledge and I forgot what a genuinely intelligent player he is as well as one with great instinct

What he has lost somewhat is his pace and heís not got the legs to be the last man bursting away from his defender. Put him deep though in a kind of free role and if he gets time on the ball then he can create from deep and we can make use of his vision. Also he is the most comfortable player we have receiving the ball from the defence. He has good awareness of what is around him and is less hesitant than Schneiderlin would be for example on where to move the ball

Sigurdsson needs to be further up that pitch for us to get the best out of him too I feel

Bolasie Sigurdsson Vlasic could be a good 3 attacking mids behind the striker in certain games I reckon

Iím starting to feel more optimistic about the season now. Just hope Sam starts with a win today

That works I think. Rooney there would allow Gana to have someone next to him with a brain and allow Scheinderlin to sit in front of the back 4 and do what he was good at last season

I think half our problem has been due to Koeman encouraging Gana to get further forwards in general. He really needs to focus on remaining as that anchor. It seems to me he's pivotal in our defensive midfield. That I think, is what has weakened our defence. I don't feel Schneiderlin should play until he bucks his ideas up.

Anyone know if it's on any American channels?

It's always on NBC. Or at least there's always a stream on NBC. Not sure if we're the live game today I haven't checked, but I doubt we are.

Just checked, it's the Spurs and Liverpool games that are on live tv here this morning.

I'm sure in the video doing the rounds yesterday of Allardyce's first training session he was in it looking pretty lively. Seems a bit soon though, I'm sure he only joined back with the first team a week or two ago?

I think we'll be ok in this one.

Huddersfield are well organised but they don't really have a goalscorer and shipping goals after conceding has been one of the main problems for us.

If we can score in the first 20/25 mins we should be good for another 3 points.

I'm going 2-0, be interesting to see if Sig blossoms under Allerdyce. I'd have thought so

Looked ok but even on a 20 second clip I thought he (understandably) looked a yard off.

Needs mins in u23 youíd assume.

Gana is basically an upgrade on McCarthy. As long as we donít expect too much from him with the ball and surround him with better players heís very good at what he does.

You're overthinking it. Neither praising nor criticising it. Just saying it's the standard thing you would expect any manager to do after a good win, and as such I don't think you can read too much into what Allardyce's approach will be once he has had some time with the squad.

Settle down.

Yeah, your bad. I've already said it wasn't what I wanted but I'll have to accept it and I'm obviously not going to sack the team off.

Not sure why I'm getting all the flack like, when the vast majority on here were appalled by this and numerous people said words to the effect that they're sacking Everton off til he goes, but hey ho.

If it's alright with you, I'll have my opinions and voice then whenever I want, ta very much. At the same time, I'll keep an open mind and if I'm wrong and the evidence shows that, I'll happily acknowledge that. Thanks again for your interest and concern.

But we're solid, we're not losing, and we gotta get used to it.

Defenders taking no chances

They donít look anything special

Think we would benefit from taking Sigurdsson off and get Niasse on

I'm not watching so can't really comment but (as he prepares to comment) if we look solid then that's great news. We've leaked so many goals this season, so the first job has to be to shore that up. Shows SA has his priorities right (not that it's any great insight).

Anyone expecting us to suddenly transform into playing quality attacking football after two days, or for SA even have to paid that more than passing attention in training so far, is being unrealistic.

You sort your defence first, be hard to beat, and build from there.

Haven't felt this relaxed watching Everton in ages. It's like the team has finally clicked.

Defence looks settled and solid, Gana is remaining in position where he's supposed to and when we attack, we do it with purpose and directness.

Bit of organisation and confidence and we're going in the right direction again.

This is a huge difference for Martina. Being able to focus on his defensive play while out of position has helped him massively .
Got to remember we have a poor right back with no left foot playing left back, the lad is way out of his comfort zone

Nothing spectacular but we looked comfortable.

Thats the important thing for me we actually looked calm today.

Its a good base to build attacking football on later on.

Its always more assuring knowing you only have to score 1/2 to win.

Not saying we are anywhere near that level of course.

Im as much a fan of free flowing attack minded football as the next man but you have to get the basics right first.

Not great entertainment, but we can build'
FT: Everton 2-0 Huddersfield

Everton
Everton boss Sam Allardyce, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was nice to see this stadium, looking around and seeing it full with the welcome. Then it was about the players delivering a performance and result today.

"This was probably their first back-to-back wins this season. The effort from the players in the second half, they really wanted to win it after finding it difficult in the first half, maybe with a bit of fatigue.

"The first goal settled us down. Defensively, did Huddersfield have a chance today? That gave us a platform to go and win the game.

"Our third clean sheet of the season, that's two on the trot and ironically we have two wins from it.

"It could have been better for entertainment, more passing and moving but we can build on that as we go on."

Canít argue with any of that

And fair play to Big Sam for the honesty

With jags and Williams everything comes back to Pickford and the midfield is bypassed.

The real difference for me today was the game management. Two up and put another centre half on to see out the result. As much as Allardyce wouldn't have been in my top ten choices of manager to take the Everton job, you have to admit that his experience shows and he does know how to grind out results. It may not always be pretty, but wins are wins and they are worth the same 3 points as a stylish win.

Definitely DCL.

Even when he had Anelka, he was wide right forward; rather the the central striker.

He values consistency in that role above scoring threat so if he can work on hold up etc think heíll be really good for him.

Apart from the derby which is obviously a defeat, it's the rest of the month when we'll find out if anything has really changed.

Away matches at Newcastle, Bournemouth and West Brom in December to put an end to 11 months without an away win.

He's been a massive difference to how we approach games.

Just shows how important it is to have a centre half who's comfortable on the ball in there.

With jags and Williams everything comes back to Pickford and the midfield is bypassed.

We need to be using him there now. Slowly get Keane back in and those two could be our future center half pairing.

Not worth getting to excited given Huddersfieldís away record.

Job done nothing much beyond that.
That is right. Everyone knew we would win the last two games with an aggregate score of 6-0. Nothing to get excited about at all. The gloom suits us anyway so why get excited?

If you can get excited about beating West Ham and Huddersfield at home old timer knock yourself out.

So did you sit on your hands at Goodison today and on Wednesday when we scored the 6 goals, or did you jump up like everyone else and cheer them?  Or did you not go to the games at all and just looked up the scores on the internet and thought "so what?."

The real difference for me today was the game management. Two up and put another centre half on to see out the result. As much as Allardyce wouldn't have been in my top ten choices of manager to take the Everton job, you have to admit that his experience shows and he does know how to grind out results. It may not always be pretty, but wins are wins and they are worth the same 3 points as a stylish win.
.....................just got back from the match, pleased we saw the game out as you say. OK it was only Hudds but 3 more valuable points.

Never sat on my hands as far as I remember, sounds a very odd thing to do to be honest.

Watched both matches though and thought the opposition werenít up to much at all and both games were something Iíd expect us to win. Like I said nothing to get excited about.

I feel quite happy about things to be honest!

Went the last 3 home league games and we won all of them and I enjoyed all of them

Maybe itís winning the money thatís put the icing on the cake though!

They are matches we should have won but before that we werenít winning matches we should have won!ie Burnley at Home, Brighton and Palace away, so Iím seeing it as progress and being positive about things 👍

It might not be pretty but we have to start by becoming harder to beat and first and foremost being solid. Michael Keane coming on for the last 10 might not be the most exciting sub in the world but itís to see out the game. Of course I wanted to see Niasse to come on, and believe that he would have come on had the situation been different

I would lie down or better, seek advice and get someone to analyse the root causes of that sort of outburst. Mind you, Allardyce has probably hired someone who can help you get over it. Let him know how you feel.

we won, which I enjoy

there was some decent football played in spells, which I enjoy

hit us with a bit of pace and we crumble like a rich tea in a cup of coffee, which I don't enjoy (I'm a chocolate digestive man)

Huddersfield were shit.  We weren't as bad as we could have been.

According to the Guardian....https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/dec/02/everton-huddersfield-town-premier-league-match-report

I reckon we did alright against another shit team and its good to be in 10th and the fans are up for it as much as most of the players so it was a good day but the Guardian can fuck right off.

Just put a tenner on us to beat the shite. Ale is a wonderful thing. A beauty in itself. Go'ead Everton.....

On derby day I will do my usual withdrawal from all communications until after the final whistle. Then I ask my wife what the score was and take it from there. That usually means avoiding all media sources until the following Tuesday, by which time the result will be history and can't hurt me so much. If it goes the other way, which has not happened for several long years, I will have to try and remember how to celebrate a draw or win at Anfield. The memory, like a few other faculties, has sadly faded.

Re the cash aspect you have to trust your DoF to help ensure that players are useful beyond the current manager (both in skill set and age). Or at least a balance.

Heís a much more tactical manager than heís given credit for, I believe Moshiri will trust him with money straight away in January.

Heíll know what players are needed to play the style want and itíll likely be a situation like with Pellegrini at City where heíll be setting us up for someone new.
