Agree. A difficult game against a side desperate to turn the corner. Keep our discipline and edge a win with another clean sheet. If Rooney does not score who else will? That is the current problem, no doubt to be sorted in January.

Probably one of the easiest fixtures in the league at the moment. They're completely beleaguered and hardly have any weapons anymore. Must-win game and really should be quite comfortable.

So they're full of strikers who haven't scored in ages? Brilliant.....

Yeah, I get that but really all the 'Everton that' stuff doesn't amount to anything.

Spend any time on most other clubs forums or talking to their fans, and about 80 clubs in the country think they are the ones that strikers break their duck against, or raise their game against.

Swansea are struggling badly and don't have Gylfi or Llorente to blag a result with anymore. Should be winning this like the West Ham/Huddersfield games with minimal fuss.

Like we were a few games ago.

Not really no. We were underperforming massively, and have the 7th/8th best squad and budget in the league. Swansea just aren't very good anymore, and have been in steady decline for some time.

On a budget to talent ratio Pickford apart it was a terrible spending spree, you could pay a million quid for a packet of polo's if your thick enough.

I'm confused on what we've spent, Pickford and polos have anything to do with the previous post or indeed Swansea?

We were underperforming massively - yes, not hard to see that

We have the 7th/8th best squad - debatable perhaps but still superior to Swansea

We have the 7th/8th best budget - yes we appear to have lots of money to spend currently

Swansea just aren't very good - nice way of putting it, but yes they are a fucking mess

Canít see the point in putting Bolasie on the bench on Monday after such a long lay off and only two very short run outs behind him. Itís not like weíre desperate given our recent results or short of numbers on the wings.

My wife's first away game that West Brom game. Went 2-0 down about two minutes into the second half and Martinez brought on Barkley and deulofeu who completely changed the game

She never understood what "limbs" meant In a football context until that night when she ended up about 30 seats away from me when we got our third!

Vlasic              Siggy               Lookman

we need to up our creativity, we need to break Swansea down.. no point having more than 1 holding midfielder..

I'd like to see us go back to the starting eleven from the West Ham and Huddersfield matches.

Davies' form hasn't been great but I think we're better with his dribbling, foul-winning, eye for a through ball, and general snidery in the team. It was fair enough to take him out of the firing line for a tricky away fixture at Newcastle but I prefer the balance of the midfield with him in it. Having Davies in the side forces Gana to stay deeper and use his defensive skills in the area where they matter most and enables Rooney to drop off and have a greater influence over our play in possession.

Longer term, we'll have the option to use Sigurdsson centrally, but for now, we need him to babysit Martina. Let Davies play himself back into some form in the meantime.

Don't agree. We went almost a year without an away win and it was getting to the stage where we were getting completely outplayed by rubbish teams all the time
We were shambolic. I think allardyce deserves great credit for the job he's done rather than people making out anyone could do it
Were people claiming it would be easy to make a decent defence with Martina and Williams during this blip?

I've fucked up bad time. Up early, made myself a coffee and for the life of me I couldn't work out why our team sheet wasn't up.

It's Sunday over there isn't It?

Heads fucked up.

Should have clicked when you said about setting an alarm about 48 hours in advance. Thought you were just being really prepared.

These don't concede many, I think it'll be a narrow victory - hoping we score early thatll open it up, if not we'll have to be patient

I'd bring in Davies for Schneiderlin, no requirement for him in a home game against Swansea

Would take a 1-0 here 100%, vital we score first and kill any lingering Swansea hopes.

We have the second best home record in the PL in 2017, only Arsenal (15) have more - on the flip side weve probably got one of the worst away records ha

Don't really see the need for 2 defensive mids at home to what I imagine to be a pretty defensive Swansea, would rather have Davies instead of Schneiderlin, even though Davies is not putting in performances like last year, his dribbling forward and finding through balls would be better.

We just need to make it difficult for Swansea, and don't give them any hope.

I don't think the first goal is as important for Everton as it is for Swansea. If they go 1-0 down, it will be very difficult for them.
Title: Re: Everton v Swansea Monday 8PM
Post by: Gary1878 on December 18, 2017, 07:05:58 PM
thats why i would play this team/formation

                    Pickford

            Holgate   Williams
Kenny                                    Martina
                   Gana-Gueye
                       Rooney
Vlasic              Siggy               Lookman

                         DCL

we need to up our creativity, we need to break Swansea down.. no point having more than 1 holding midfielder..

Agree, but would play Lennon over Vlasic. Although I think Vlasic will be a great player for future, Lennon provides a little more cover defensively, and I think he has been in great form, and deserves to continue playing.

Big Sam will Face criticism from the fanbase for the first time tonight I think if we donít get the win

Personally I will take any scrappy 1-0 win if needed but he will struggle most to take the game to teams in matches like this I think. Would be great to get a couple before half time to take the pressure off

If we are being held at half time you really want to see the likes of Vlasic, Niasse, Lookman come on and sacrifice a defensive centre mid

That's his game, though, and he's generally very good at it (lousy form this season aside).

The issue for me is that we don't need Gana and Schneiderlin on the pitch at the same time. It's nice to have two good DMs to rotate but it's better if we only pick one per match (except in extreme cases, like the derby).

No it's not, or it wasn't. At Southampton he was more of a box to box midfielder and Wanyama was the one sitting deep. There was far more to his game a few years ago which tempted Man U to splash out on him. He then remodelled his game to act as United's deep lying midfielder and he seems to think that's all he needs to do now.

He's played it forward several times when the pass is on. He's showing for it out of defence as well, that's when they're not bladdering it over his head.

Dire so far. Schniederlin offers nothing. Poor team selection from Sam.
TBF Davies has been appalling recently.   For all our apparent options in centre midfield we could do with more quality in there.

This is like a lot of games under Koeman where Gana always seemed to be the spare man in midfield with the ball at his feet. He should be further back with someone of better ability on the ball.

I know I'm a broken record but Morgan is offering nothing again. He's nowhere a defensive midfielder should be when we're off the ball, and does nothing to dictate a tempo when on it.

Gana can easily do what he's doing so far, allowing Davies to come on and move us up the pitch and quicken the play.

I imagine a Rooney/Sigurdsson/Baines (when fit) rotation on penalties would be annoying for opposition keepers to prepare for.

It's no reason to pick lots of defensive minded ones at home against the bottom club though.

I don't know. I think the only way we can play anymore attacking is to play players you can't currently be sure of a base level out of. We are utterly lacking in pace, playmaking and dribbling. The only fix is to play sandro lookman and or vlasic. I think allardyce is just thinking we have a better chance being defensive with the current personal. So far he's probably been right

We need new attacking players. Think we should judge the performances after the window. Currently we are dull but picking up great results. We were dull and getting fuck all before allardyce

I don't blame any of the midfielders individually. We have about a year's worth of evidence that the Gana/Schneiderlin pairing doesn't move the ball well enough to help us control matches. That has ripple effects throughout the whole team.

We got away with not having control with Lukaku up top. Don't think we have the luxury anymore.

He produces great moments: we desperately need more control of games though. Scored 3 beautiful goals this season but possibly not had a great performance yet

He needs to be in the centre. Heís slower than a week in jail, thereís no way the fullback should of allowed him to cut inside.

No chance, he didn't clip his own heels on purpose. His trailing heel was clipped (outside the box) and that in turn lead to him clipping his own. No attempt at deception. Just momentum.

Swansea were unlucky that was given inside the box though.

Kind of system where everyone has individual jobs rather than moving as a whole up and down, we'll really benefit from this when we have some better attacking players.

Kenny was my motm again, hopefully Coleman comes back in and gets back to his best but if he doesn't i'm not worried at all.

The fact we're now chasing down Burnley for 7th says a lot about why we shouldn't have been panicking about going down a few weeks ago. Just needed a manager worth his salt to instil the basics into them and get some consistency of team selection.

We panicked because at the time we did not have that Manager worth his salt to I still the basics, we had a prima donna with the charisma of an ironing board that felt absolutely no affiliation to us whatsoever, we were that delusional, egoistical bluffers stepping stone to Barcelona.

Its been a proper functional performance today.  Done the basics 99% correct, and won with 2 pens and a screamer.

Not a single player played badly.

That's exactly what Allerdyce brings, functional performances and that's exactly what we need four weeks ago.

Wrong selection in the first half with two defensive midfielders against a shite Swansea. Sam was totally honest when he criticised the awful first half display and praised the crowd for their patience. I don't know if the crowd was frozen into silence or bored.  All changed early in second half especially when Davies came on and added energy and directness. Felt sorry for Sandro who must regard this weather with horror and came on for about 4 or 5 minutes hardly touching the ball. Fella behind me said this is the worst Everton football side he has seen in years and wasn't worth his trip from Bolton. Well we might not be pretty to watch, but so far it is effective, and it is onwards and upwards with Big Sam. After our terrible start to the season, you can't complain considering the recent results.  No complaints from me except for the near frostbite.

Right. These are before I've seen any replays.

0-1 Da f Williams (I'm sorry to say this again).
1-1 Park End, didn't see it clearly. Inside/outside.
2-1 Gylfi is waking up
3-1 Soft

Street End was sucking in the goals. I dunno if I ever see Goodison again (tried to do it every season but...) so if that's the case: Thank you.

Great to get a win but as said before not so pretty to watch, loving it with the kids tho' and can't see why Seamus should be rushed back at all .
He is 29 now I think and if he gets back up to speed great but we have no need to push him too early ,what kind of message does that send out ?
I don't like the way we play but I like the way Sam is keeping the same side as a kind of loyalty /common sense thing ,that I think gives more incentive
for getting in the team ,thinking well if I get in I will be staying as long as I play well. The hint that there will be no signing in January could just be a ploy
so we don't get shafted too badly .I feel DCL is getting better by the game ,if only he had a harder shot ,he seems to try to be sure if even half chances but no complaints  really.

It really doesnít need to be pretty at the moment as long as itís effective. I donít think any more could really have been asked of Sam from when he came in. The players are slowly getting their confidence back and I thought once Davies came on last night, the team became a lot more fluid.

A big chunk of the team last night improved as the game went on. Rooney seemed to really struggle to even make a simple pass for the first hour but was much better once he had netted his pen

Holgate seemed a lot more comfortable on the ball in the second half, after some terrible distribution early on

Gana as well strolled through the 2nd half after struggling a bit in the first

The Davies/Schneiderlin sub was key as it allowed the midfield to operate properly. Schneiderlinís confidence is rock bottom at the moment and I donít think he knows what his role is. If all he does is sit and protect the defence then thatís fine, but he doesnít stay in that position ready to stop anyone roaming through the centre. He seems to have stopped playing the ball forward, so seems to slow down the play. Also if we are playing a midfield 3 where the idea is that Rooney will be the one to get on the ball and dictate the play from deep, then we need 2 players alongside him full of energy. MS does not appear to have that about his game at the moment. Davies made us click when he came on, but he still isnít the perfect solution to be starting as his form has fluctuated quite a bit this season

For me the tirelessness and hard work of 3 players last night was ultimately what had us set up to win that game and they were Jonjoe Kenny, Aaron Lennon and Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Lennon in the first half particularly really showed his desire to raise the level of the team, chased everything and didnít give them a moments peace. Won the pen and also showed inventiveness when he nutmegged his man and got his shot away. People sometimes moan about his lack of quality but when there is just so much commitment from him, he really canít be left out the side. He has been essential in getting us out of trouble. Sets such a good example

The 2 youngsters have been monstrous this season. Dom is starting to lead the line really well. Used his pace to good effect last night and was really quick thinking of him to slot the rebound away, in the right place at the right time. He gives everything for the cause, heís not perfect but you can see how heís progressed from last season by getting game time

Some total whopper sitting by me at the match slated Jonjoe Kenny throughout the game. Said heís a clown and that all his passes are aimless and that he canít defend. Also that the only player worse in the side is Cuco

I disagree with all of that. I think he has been superb since he broke into the side. Puts his body on the line and also offers a good option going forward and shows real commitment. I think he is going to be a hero in royal blue for years to come, and is probably the form player in the team

Quick word on Cuco too, I think he is doing absoloutely fine in there

Overall it didnít start off pretty last night but it was a good win that we worked hard for. Sam has to be given a lot of praise for how he has started. Heís picked up a lot of points without us really playing well. Did people think another manager would have come in and not only got the same amount of points but played a brand of free flowing football while at the same time being as defensively solid, with a group of players so low on confidence?

Weíve now got only 1 point less then at this stage last season. Well in Big Sam you have done a great job so far

I actually don't think Swansea were that bad but they , like us , lack an outlet up front . They were organised and passed it around nicely and pressed us well 1st half . Their heads went as soon as we equalised which is what happens when your struggling . I don't see why everyone we struggle to beat has to be considered utter fucking shite . They are no worse than we were 4 weeks ago . Job done in any case and 3 points in the bag .

His penalty conversion rate seems pretty poor, there was a stat flying round that he's missed 10 of his 32 penalties in his career.

In fairness to him, the save from Hart in the first game was a good save, as was the save from Fabianksi yesterday. His penalty against Liverpool and His second one yesterday were quality.

As @Jimmywhack (https://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=329) says though, I can't really see anyone else wanting to take one.

First half was crap but I've seen that sort of stuff against a shit team at home a million times before.

Much better in the second and I reckon we're playing some nicer stuff than we get credit for to be honest.

There's no hesitation to lump it when needed but we try to play out from the back when its on I reckon.

Holgate coming in to the side has been key to that.

Gylfi improving with every game and same for Gana.

I'm pleased with Large Samuel so far.
