Title: Everton v Man United
Post by: Shogun on December 31, 2017, 08:54:02 PM
5:30 pm kick off

Pickford
Kenny Holgate Williams Martina
Gana Schneiderlin Rooney
Bolasie Niasse Sigurdsson

Don't think Keane and Jagielka have been impressive at all.

The back two of Williams and Holgate has worked the best since Sam's been in charge. Crazy the way he changed it in games he didn't have to.

I don't like that front three.

--------------------Pickford-----------------
Kenny------Holgate----Williams----Martina
-------------Gueye----Baningime----------
Lennon-----------Rooney-----------Sigurdsson
-------------------Niasse--------------------

Bench: Stekelenburg/Robles (I really don't mind), Keane, Schneiderlin, Davies, Vlasic, DCL, Sandro

Problem is our squad is really quite big that I can't find space for some players like Lookman or Bolasie or McCarthy.

                Pickford
Kenny Holgate Williams Martina
             Gana Rooney
                   Sig
Lennon        DCL             Vlasic

I've got no chance of this team happening, but we can but wish.

I don't like that front three.

They where both carrying knocks, it was widely reported plus he is able to rotate in central defence as we have the extra bodies.
With so many games in a short period, rotation makes perfect sense.
Plus he may want to see Jags and Keane in competitive action before the Jan window.

As for the United game, I just hope the team give 100% effort in what is a semi derby.

Pickford
Holgate Williams Jags Martina
Gueye Rooney Davies
Lennon DCL Sig

Kenny will probably start but I'd give him a rest. He'll probably keep faith in Schneiderlin as well tbh

Without knowing who is carrying knocks, my team would be

Pickford
Kenny Williams holgate Martina
Mirallas rooney Besic Lookman
Vlasic
Niasse

And I would have klassen, Sandro and some of the U23s kids on the bench

We should try and keep as many of the core players rested for the Liverpool game as this is our only option for silverware and should take priority

As such Rooney and holgate should be subbed around 60 mins

I honestly can’t think of a team to put out that could trouble these, even with their issues. Niasse up front due to DCL being dead is the only obvious one.

I’d be tempted to play Lookman, Klassen and Sandro so they can make cunts of themselves and the fans can go ‘ahhhh, so thaaaat’s why they’re not in the team’.

It’s a shame Lukakus not playing really, think it would have made for a real nasty intense atmosphere which in turn always leads to a high tempo do or die game, which would obviously gives us more chance than lining up with 9 men on the edge of our own box.

I’d be tempted to play Lookman, Klaassen and Sandro in this one because they're well rested and at some point their quality has to show. Lookman has looked good at times as he was being phased in gradually. It's unfortunate that we have also been trying to phase in Klaassen, Sandro, Keane, Sigurdsson and Vlasic at the same time. It's just not easy to phase this many players in to get up to speed in the Premier League and it's even harder when the team they're being phased into are playing absolutely shit.

Regardless - they all have my 100% support and I hope they do well.

Fixed

Palace and Brighton showing that with real wide attackers you can create chances and hold your own in games.

Vlasic, man.

He has impressed me every time, with his endeavor, strength, ball retention, and attacking intent.

However, neither Unsworth or Allardyce have seemed to trust him so I guess I'm wrong.

In the Europa dead rubber him and Lookman ran the show from the wings (yeah, I know it was a bit of a friendly match in essence, but surely we've got to start trying to take the game to the opposition rather than defending deep and en masse and hoping for the best)

I don't think its as simple as being right or wrong on Vlasic.  I rate him too, certainly over Lennon.  He has lost critical possession when I've seen him too.  Maybe that's the issue.  Or maybe there are non-football reasons that we don't know about.  I think a lot of fans just watch a handful of games and concoct formations and line ups based upon what is a tiny part of the picture.  But even that doesn't make anybody wrong.  I do think that you have to trust the judgement of people who know the entire picture though.  It doesn't happen much on here.  The usual routine is to slag off whoever the manager is and ask questions later.  Happened with Koeman, Unsworth and now Allardyce.

Said before that apparently he’s fallen out with the club. Not the manager, the club. Agent wanted talks with the club hierarchy when Unsworth first dropped him. It was all ‘my client could’ve joined Inter Milan, and he’s not even getting into a struggling team, we’ll assess the situation in the summer’. Didn’t go down well. Could (and probably is) just a rumour though.

Agree. I try to give managers (and players) a bit of slack as there are always other factors we’re not aware of.

I remember slagging off Moyes no end because he continued to overlook Van Der Meyde even when we were crying out for width and creativity. Turns out he was smacked off his tits and shacked up with a stripper. My bad. I’ll apologise to Moyesy if I ever meet him.

And having read Ossie’s book; the amount of times he went out on the pitch when he was technically ‘match fit’ but in reality was nursing knee and ankle injuries and was being held together with sticky tape...well, I take back some of those ‘cunt’ sounds. Sorry Ossie.

All very cathartic, this.

I didn't slag off the manager.

In fact, I stated that I was clearly wrong if both Unsworth and Allardyce disagreed with me.

However, I stand by the original point; being passive and vaguely reactive is going to bite us on the arse if it is our default modus operandi.

Bolasie starting his second game in a week after such a long lay off is very dicey.

Seems like we're going for it from the off and hoping to score in the first half.

If we manage it I can see him trying to shut it down in the second half.

Not sure Sig deserved to be dropped, I'd have him in the middle over either of those DMs

3 games in a row now playing players from the start who have been injured and have not played for ages... instead of playing players who are fully fit and with things to prove.

glad Vlasic is in... dont get the Kenny drop.. even less so bringing keane back in..

Bolassie will be like playing with ten men.. same as he was v west brom.. same as we was v bournemouth when McCarthy started..

hope we attack man utd... last 3-4 games have made me feel like we're playing under koeman again,

Can’t say you’re surprised at his limitations is he? We all know he’s crap with the ball

I prefer Niasse’s movement up top. He didn’t have the best of halves mind you, but how many anonymous halves has DCL had?

Only curious thing is the pulling wide thing, he’s doing it enough that it seems to be for a game plan.

As good as Davies has been in the first half, I'd like to see Sig come on in place of him.

Not sure why you would take Davies off, he's the only one of the midfield with the mobility to carry the ball forward and he's done it well.

We'll probably see Sig on for Bolasie out of necessity as there's no way Bolasie has 90 in him.

DCL needs to come on for Niasse, he might not have the same goal threat but attacks are just breaking down when they reach Niasse

Good to see Davies pushing up from midfield , thought we might struggle to get support past their three in the midfield , but we are staying fairly compact and actually using the ball when we have it. Been much better at hunting it down as a group too. Going to get a fresh brew and roll one and wait patiently for the Rooney winner. You know it's coming.

Very true. I do think we lack a presence with DCL though, Niasse has his faults but I think he does pull defenders about a bit more. Probably what I appreciate more when neither have a ton to work with.

We’re clearly trying to add a main striker in January so this may soon be a question of who out of Niasse or DCL we want to bring on for 20-25 mins which is probably more the sort of use they should be getting at the moment.

It's a tricky situation to manage with the current squad.

Rooney can't play every minute and his fitness needs to be managed but he's the only midfielder we have who's remotely incisive with his passing and we're crap without him on the pitch.

I don't think Klaassen is the right type of midfielder either. He doesn't look for the ball and he doesn't dribble. From what I've seen, he mostly just moves around in search of space, occasionally contributing a nifty touch to open something up. Like a slow, passive Thomas Muller, or something like that.

Second half, every single evertonian knew what was coming after five minutes and nothing was changed.

Need a goal and he takes off the one player capable of scoring one. Granted we played better once the subs came on but we aren't going to score a goal without Rooney or Sigurdsson on the pitch so it was pointless.

Great the way it's always 'lack of quality' for the first six months with Everton managers. The issue is that we keep getting unadaptable managers who have 1 default style.

We have more 'quality' than 13 other teams in the league. Yet these are able to take points off teams that ware aren't

So we gave it a decent go today and abandoned the ultra defensive approach we took against Liverpool and Chelsea that some cunts were moaning like fuck at, we get beat despite a fairly decent performance, said cunts are now moaning we got beat today by 2nd in the league.

Standard NSNO stuff.

Decent performance? What game have you been watching, we were ok for about 20 mins

Don't get too excited about this transfer window we won't get players we want it. We'll stumble on to around 45-48 points. Just fast forward the next 5 months and get the season done with.

Big fan of Vlasic. He's had one of his quieter games today, but all the tools are there. I hate to agree with Koeman, but he'd really suit a more central role.

Ironic that the first goal went in after a counter-attack

that wasnt a counter attack.. lol we didnt get to attack, Rooney lost control and decided to pass it square along the ground across the pitch... then they(man utd) countered..

some of it was ok today,, but still dont understand why defensive midfielders and defenders would rather try to play the killer pass or long ball across the pitch, when they have someone like Vlasic next to them.. so many times Holgate could have passed it to him/back to him, but he didnt, he just went on missions himself...

i dont mind Kenny doing that, cos he can actually attack..

also why was Niasse on the wing so much i nthe first half? at times Vlasic was the central striker.. wtf seriously..

stop all the changing around of the team., play your strongest 11, if someone is injured then change.. we seemed to be doing ok when he kept the team the same..with minimal changes.

Four goals in last five matches and two of them came as a result of penalties.

Even under Unsy though we struggled from open play:

Watford was Niasse charging down the keeper; DCL from a corner; and a lucky pen.

Palace was a lucky pen; and knicking the ball back from a mistake.

Southampton was Sigurdsson great goal.

WHam was pen, good goal, wonder goal, Williams from corner.

SA has been:

H’field two decent goals.

Anfield lucky pen

Swansea lucky pen; individual goal; lucky pen

Newcastle decent goal

Bournemouth decent goal.

We need to be doing more; obviously but we’ve been imbalanced in terms of attacking since the summer.

Well it’s a collective from since Moyes left.

We’re not better in any position since 12/13.

Pickford probably apart.

In theory CM should be better than Osman and Neville but they’re not playing like it.

At that point we had a settled side with obvious improvements needed in CM and striker.

At end of 12/13 we needed better CMs and striker.

Summer 13 we signed McCarthy and Barry, replaced Fellaini with Barkley and got Lukaku.

Lukaku replaced (and more) Fellaini’s goals and Barkley more suited to RM approach so easy to see why we improved from 6th to 5th.

From then it went rapidly down hill with aging players not replaced (Pienaar first up in summer 14) and others losing form along with the team in general.

18 months ago we had 4 of the very best young talent in European football. They’ve all disappeared bar one who nearly left last summer.

We replaced 22 year old Stones with a 31 year old and Lukaku with a 32 year old. That was almost £130m worth of talent gone while under his stewardship, under the governance of managers appointed by him.

Truly awful decisions.

We weren't great first half but it was an improvement on the shite at WBA and Bournemouth. ..then Sam waved his magic wand and made the worst fucked up subs yet ...the alternative was right there ...the crowd booed the subs they all knew what was coming .they all saw it and don't get 6 million a year.

I thought we looked better at timea today, not good but better, davies was much better in possession, vlasic linked up well and looked good on the ball, bolasie had a few great moments too.

Unfortunately most of that meamt nothing because we had no real goal threat, and we were punished by two very good finishes from two bad mistakes.

They were better and created more and you'd expect them to.

Biggest take away from today is the same as the last few games, we are severely lacking in 4 or 5 key areas and massive work needs to be done to bring the squad up to scratch.

Easy to hate the way we're playing at the moment, but im genuinely worried that there arent many other options with the playing staff we have right now.

These players have been shit under 3 managers...it’s not like he’s made them worse. They’re the issue but it’s easier to blame the manager, that way you can lie to yourself that the next guy can just tweak things and we’ll be great again. That’s why people want Fonseca or Silva or some other relatively unknown quantity. They offer an ‘x’ factor, a hope that they can miraculously turn us into challengers. Denying it’s the players and putting it all on the manager also means facing up to the possibility that Moshiri’s takeover (up until now) has been a complete false dawn. We are shit and unless the stadium drastically changes our fortunes, we’ll always be shit.

Happy new year. NSNO.

And the Anti-Allardyce brigade are making plenty of noise without naming any feasible alternatives.

And so they should, hes proved how one sided he is over our last few games.

Alternatives, I dont know, maybe a manager who sets up to have a go at teams at home, Moyes at his worst is better than big Sam, never thought id say that

The alternative is the manager needs to stop being so fucking negative in his approach ...no?.

When you start claiming that the crowd know more than the manager you reveal your own naivety; and frankly make an argument with you a waste of time.

You must have been at the back of the Park End ? and couldn't see that Bolassie was knackered after his very good effort in the first half and couldn't see that Rooney was running on empty around the same time. I would say that in relation to the standard of the rest of the league this squad is as bad as we've had. Having a go in a fight were you are completely outgunned is more likely to have you beaten sooner and more heavily.

No evidence whatever that he is losing the crowd. Where were you tonight to say that?  If some clowns booed the sub of Bolassie maybe they were too thick to see he was physically finished after his first half effort? Rooney ditto except maybe Sigurdsson might have been better coming on for him.  Finally your  clueless statement  "Seemed like we set out that second half to contain them at 0-0 and settle for the draw." Don't be stupid. Nobody planned to do that. The players fell back because they could not cope against far better players, like Pogba etc etc who turned the screw. What makes you think that our players none of whom would make it to their bench except the goalie would cope when they started to play well in the second half?  They are second for a fucking good reason.

I don't think we did have a go with those to be honest but maybe the stats are out there.

The stat about shots on target is tiresome though.  Yes it is bad.  But WE are bad.  We're shit.  I don't know why so many people can't uncouple these two things, and I don't understand why it has to be Allardyce's fault by association.  We've not been creating many chances all season, and we are not playing hoofball as I pointed out the other day.  And anyway it is possible to win games with minimal shots and chances so I don't find this approach unreasonable.

I'm quite happy to support Sam.  The squad is disastrously unbalanced after RK's summer of inept business...he failed to bring in the 1 absolute essential, a quality striker.   Sam has to build a team from a shambles.
He realises the effect a 0-4 hammering would have on the team's fragile confidence so he has to be cautious.  ManU have world class players.  We did ok today.
I'm confident that he will get the right players and balance in the team.  Give him time.

Nice to see us playing with wingers, just a shame the team are so used to not having them!! Bolasie did well on the times he got forward but he put the brakes on too many times when he had space to run at and knew he could beat his man any time he wanted

Rooney trying too hard but at 1-0 you leave him on rather than trying to protect the deficit with McCarthy.

Pickford kept us respectable again.

Holgate isn't a right back and has never claimed to be

Schneiderlin is a coward

We need a striker or two

So wtf happened today?

I was out for a meal and missed the game. I was gutted when I saw the lineup because it looked really fresh and attacking up front.

All I can gather from reading on here is we had a very small window where we were competitive (20, 10 r 7 mins, depending on who you believe is most accurate) and we came out the second half like a sack of shit and made poor use of the subs again.

Is that roughly it or is there more?

And did those front players - Vlasic, Rooney and Bolasie behind Niasse - get to create anything at all? Did they make any chances? Any signs of good link-up play or forward passing?

Not pro Sam or Anti Sam-  just want whats best for Everton-  the subs looked negative at the time but actually sparked us into a bit of life---

saying that 1-0 down --any subs at the time should make an impact

the games against Bournemouth and Wba are the one where he lacked belief in the players

-----100% we need to score the first goal in games---  just like we did mostly under Moyes tactics

no shots on target
Davies looping/deflected effort
Bolassie looked lively , but no one really in the box once he put his cross in
Martina got in his way quite alot in build ups down the left
McCarthy put some tackles in-  than Morgs did whole game
Niasse flashed a diving header wide at the near post
Holgate no rb
Vlasic had one decent run-  spent most of the time getting roasted/defensive not switched on

I’m gutted we didn’t beat 2nd place Man Utd.

Regarding the game, we lost it in midfield they where far superior in the central areas.

I though Schniderlin proved why he was a United reject and not good enough for a team who are top 6.
Keane was also poor.

When Bolasie gets fit to play 90 mins it’s going to be a big plus although if he had just an extra 20% better accuracy with his crossing it would make a huge difference. The over welming majority are shocking and end up in no mans land, it was the same before he was injured and at palace. At least 5 out of 6 are awful.

One positive is Sigurdsson who looked knackered on Saturday got a rest, hopefully on Friday he is played in the number 10 role, he’s wasted on the wing and doesn’t have the pace to do it successfully.

It's literally between 13 teams to go down every season though isn't it?

There used to be a time where championship teams would come up, get 20 points and go back down. Now they're finishing midtable. The gap between the lower echelons of the premier league and the championship has shortened significantly imo.

What’s the point? The past four games we’ve had maybe two chances on goal. Is that really why we watch sport? I’m sure some people think of football as a given and you support your team whatever but should it really be the case that you pay your money to watch this rubbish? I dunno.

In fairness to Fraud, his McCarthy sub was decent. Our performance was better today and we did try to get forward. Pogba and Mata were brilliant and the difference.

But why didn't we at least try to play at West Brom and Bournemouth. The mind boggles.
This is what does my head in.I stated in another thread, the position we are in at the moment I truly understand setting up to stifle the better teams, stop them playing and nicking a point or even better a 1-0 win.It was grim to watch the Chelsea and shite games, but at least we picked a point up in each. However, there is absolutely no way we should have treated the west brom and Bournemouth games the same, west brom no wins in 18,bournemouth none in 8.Bournemouth beat us,west brom should have beat us because of the selections and the timidness of our play.We handed them the initiative, and very grateful they were too.I know we are criminally weak up front, but surely he could have played a more attack minded line up and at least given the likes of west brom and Bournemouth something to think about.

Reporter to Unsworth after the West Ham game " who picked the team tonight?"

Unsworth "Me"

Reporter "Has Sam spoke to any of the players yet"

Unworth "Not as far as I know "

Sams first pres conference

Reporter "Just to clear up any confusion, did you have any involvement in team or tactics for the West Ham game?"

Allardyce "No, Unsy trained team and picked the players and tactics, he kindly let into the changing room after the game so I could congratulate the players "

Got to make it look and sound worse than it is to justify the claim he saved us from relegation . Either way they were 2 cracking goals . Pleased with our bus parking against Chelsea , gutted by WBA and not surprised by Bournemouth given previous encounters . We are out of the Cup Friday unless they play a weakened side and then have a nice break before we get battered by Tottenham . Next point is at home to WBA on the 20th but just the 1 in a 0-0 . No appropriate lack of respect  just reality .

Just using it as an example as to why we should be expecting a lot more from this team going forward.

People are trying to tell us we shouldn't even have a go at teams because the attacking players are shit.

I'm saying that you can set up compact, whilst still having a threat going forward, and using an example to show that this team can score goals.

I agree. Burnley, for example, have attacking players that most would agree are of an inferior standard to us but they consistently pull out decent performances and results against the better teams.

It’s all about the intent and instructions you get sent out with.

They're on YouTube. Not watched them since they happened but all videos of pre and post match pressers are there.

More nonsense. We played some decent football yesterday considering our attacking options. Burnley are hardly free scoring but they have had a stable squad and manager for a few years now whereas Allardyce has probably had time for a handful of training sessions if that. People are moving with this appropriate lack of respect  thing but this is a perfect example. I honestly don't know what you expect him to achieve in the time frame he's been here and an utterly bizarre squad.

And to all the boring (apologies in advance) idiots on here who keep posting the same moaning shite day in day out, I never wanted Allardyce either. But we've got him. You lads need some internet bricks. What help does anyone think there is in constantly taking pot shots?  He's probably not going to be here long term anyway.

I think he said he met Unsworth for 15 minutes during the day of the game, not the players though.

Couldn't agree more but what do you think the point of a forum is ? It is just an exchange of views and has no bearing whatsoever on the real world . It is the drunken argument of the age we live in .

Fair points but I'll still stand by my initial post. It's primarily about the intent and instructions that the players are trained in and go out onto the field with.

But do we know what the intent and instructions were that the players took on to the field?  Also do we know if the players  just failed to carry them out? Allardyce gave the impression that almost nothing that went on after half time was according to his intentions.

Also never looked up once in his presser....strange that...now I'm not saying he's lying (the appropriate lack of respect  police will have me off)
But people who tell porkies don't ever look you in the eye .
Just an observation. ...👍

Couldn't hope for much yesterday, maybe i'm easily pleased but i thought we did well for a decent amount of time against a top class team, 2 very good goals and Pogba saving his best for us, the only thing i can say is the subs could have come sooner especially Bolaise who did well but had faded, other than that he tried to put out a more attacking formation but you need the players for it and we will always fall short there with this squad at the moment.
