Unless your playing 3 at the back that's 12 players, and we don't want 3 at the back. I pike that attacking line up though. I'd drop Rooney deep to sit with schniederlin and have SIG in the 10 role. The pace in those wing positions is exciting.

Edit: misread that, carry on

I think we need to start to introduce Keane into our defence in preparation for next season, neither jags nor Williams will play next season so pare Keane up with Holgate and get the love happening at the back

I think that looks like our best team going forward although we need a new CB to replace Jags/Williams, possibly Keen could be the man if he finds his Burnley form.

I'd also make sure that Lookman and Vlasic got some game time in those wide areas, maybe last 15/20 mins of games.

still cant believe people would play Schneiderlin and an un fit Bolassie,

It would help our team  immensely if we played 11 fit players.

GK: Pickford
RB: Kenny
CB: Holgate
CB: Keane
LB: Baines
DM: Gana
CM: Rooney
CM: Davies
RAM: Walcott/Bolasie/Lennon (genuinely don't care)
CF: Calvert-Lewin
LAM: Sigurdsson

There's enough younger players in there to develop (Pickford, Kenny, Holgate, Keane, Davies, Calvert-Lewin), there's enough experience in there to prop them up (I think -- if Holgate-Keane doesn't work out, we can easily drop Keane for Jagielka or Williams), and that's our only midfield configuration that has shown any signs of being functional. Sub Vlasic or Lookman into the right attacking mid slot at the 60' mark if we're up 2 goals or more for some extra player development.

I get that Gana, Rooney, and Davies have all picked up injuries over the past month but I have no idea why Allardyce deviated from this basic blueprint. We played some watchable, effective football with that team shape and mix in midfield. And we actually scored goals too, even though the attacking lineup wasn't particularly good.

Of course, that's not what we're going to do, as evidenced by the Tosun signing and the grumblings about Cresswell and N'Zonzi.

All Allardyce/Walsh/the rest of the small army of people working on transfers needed to do to get us over the line comfortably this season and put us in a good position for the future is sign (1) a promising, young left back to get Martina out of the team and rotate with Baines, and (2) a good, progressive midfield passer to replace/rotate with Rooney, who can't play all the minutes we need him to.

Instead, we've signed two older attackers to take minutes away from Calvert-Lewin, Lookman, and Vlasic and we've phased out Davies (I don't give a fuck about form, he's still more useful than McCarthy or Schneiderlin). Putting aside the actual cost of the players we've signed, there's also the opportunity cost of holding back the development of players with demonstrated potential to be a part of something good here in the future. (And yes, the main thing all younger players need to improve is competitive first-team matches; nobody improves significantly from the bench or stands.)

Is any of what we've done worth it to be good value for 7th or 8th place for a season or two? No.

In a year or two, we're going to be buried under a mountain of expensive players in decline with fuck all to show for it.

\end{grumpy bastard rant}

I get you're not overly blown away by our signings, but fuck me, that's pretty much what we've been playing most of the season and it's been fucking shit. That would see us right down further in a relegation battle. Bring on players when we're 2-0 up?! We're never having two shots with that lineup currently

Your all for bringing in players to rotate with the aging squad, but what about some players to rotate with the youngsters who shouldn't be expected to perform every game

There is no room for Rooney in that team at all. Rooney in a CM two would be suicide. And Rooney isnt better on the wing than walcott, lookman or bolassie. Nor is he better as a number 10 than Gyilfi.

I wouldn't drop Rooney until other players started chipping in with goals. And if we're playing a better side in possession than us (everyone) I'd swap Vlasic out for another DM.

Putting Bolasie in front of Martina? Give your heads a wobble, lads.

I would say that at home vs teams we expect to beat, that as Martina doesn’t overlap etc that having someone in front of him who he can give the ball to and they’ll take it on themselves would ease a bit of pressure.

When he plays with Sigurdsson then he needs to overlap to a create options b create space.

Understand defensive concerns.

Quite a few people have written about emotional attachment to the team.

In most people’s XIs nearly every player has been here 18 months at most.

Compare that to when we had several players with hundreds of appearances for us and it’s easy to see where a disconnect comes from even without consideration of performances/results.
Title: Re: What team would you pick

Add to that it’s also very difficult to get any continuity for the players themselves.

I'm bored so here's a 4-4-2 hoof ball lineup.

GK: Pickford
RB: Coleman
CB: Holgate
CB: Williams
LB: Baines
RM: Lennon
CM: Gana
CM: McCarthy
LM: Sigurdsson
CF: Tosun
CF: Walcott

The strategy is simple -- everyone defends, we hardly pass the ball at all (which is good because imagine that midfield trying to pass), Tosun tries to find Walcott with flick-ons (better than having Rooney chase them).

Would have been decent midfield mix of styles in early to mid 90s.

A bit like Utds midfield although they had pace on both sides.

Well as soon as we get a decent LB and a decent left sided CB we should be ok.

a fit Keane as CB (right side) and a fit Coleman and the defence should be ok.

Been thinking about this. Taking another crack at it, somewhat seriously.

GK: Pickford
RB: Kenny
CB: Holgate
CB: Keane (or anyone but Williams)
LB: Martina (please come back, Baines)
DM: Gana
CM: Davies
CM: Sigurdsson or Rooney (Rooney much better for passing from deep but we can make either work... maybe)
RW: Walcott
CF: Tosun
LW: Vlasic

Defense mostly picks itself (Holgate's partner -- what to do?). Gana is there to stay put and tackle/intercept everything that comes near him, his best role. Davies and Vlasic are there for ball progression (via dribbling) and retention (both decent at holding it in tight spaces) and also winning fouls. Walcott, Tosun, and Sigurdsson/Rooney are the "finishers," the players we need to make the final pass/shot.

I went for Vlasic over Bolasie/Lookman because, while those two are unquestionably better dribblers, they're also total wild cards who are just as likely to give the ball away as they are to pull off a bit of magic. Vlasic isn't as explosive but there's a premeditation to his game that those two lack and that's what I want in the team. He doesn't need to do anything special, just hold off pressure and help us inch forward.

Probably still shit but that's what you get when you buy a bunch of individuals with no regard for how they fit together. It's hard to find a way to get from defense/midfield to the final third, as evidenced by the fact that I'm hypothetically asking Davies and Vlasic to shoulder a lot of that.

Why is it there seems to be some un written rule about only playing one upfront...we sold lukaku ages ago and yet people still think we're able to play like that and only 2 people picked 2 forwards
