Title: Arsenal V Everton Sat 5.30 kick off
Post by: Macca77 on February 01, 2018, 04:20:20 PM
Can we finally break our Emirates hoodoo?

Tosun in for Niasse?

Mangala straight in?

Bad time to play these.

Same team as tonight except Tosun in for Niasse and reluctantly Kenny for Coleman.

Holgate for either of the two CBs (Jags) but we go to shit when changing the defence.

Depends which Arsenal turn up really, if we actually have a go I reckon we could get at their defence and cause them a few problems.

Ugh. He's not a bad player in a vacuum but he totally ruins our midfield.

I'd rather shift Sigurdsson inside and play Vlasic or Bolasie on the left. I would even prefer to experiment with Klaassen there even though he doesn't get on the ball enough either (based on an admittedly small sample size).

Basically, we know Gana-Schneiderlin sucks. It sucked last season (remember Koeman hauling one of them off at halftime in every match they started together?), it sucks this season, and the only reason to ever put them on the pitch together again is because they're the only two fit midfielders we have for those positions.

Arsenal have been pretty great at home this season. They've just been tragically bad away from home, expect at Goodison of course.

So it's tempting to look at their recent away results and think what if, but I don't think that's much of a yardstick.

I'm still happy we saw something of a team performance last night, so I'm more relaxed going into this one. I don't think it's likely we'll get anything from the game though. I'm not sure we're there yet.

Allardyce I'd imagine would be looking to dig in and try and play in Walcott on the break.

Need to keep the same midfield, swap Tosun for Niasse, and make as few changes to the defence as possible.  Walcott will be well up for this, so just keep feeding him.

Yeah has to be 3 man midfield from now on, it’s the only shape that any of the three managers have been able to get any sort of game out of.

Rooney in the middle, non negotiable.

Gana sits. Would accept Beni in a pinch. Would accept schneiderlin in a pinch.

The other midfielder anyone from Davies/Klaassen/Sigurdsson/even Gana (pinch) as we saw first part of the season.

We might have to just accept that gylfi will never play number 10 for us because we don’t look like ever playing a system with a 10, and when he has played there he’s actually been worse. On the left he works hard, he gets on the ball a bit but doesn’t have the responsibility to get on the ball again and again, which is his ultimate problem beyond pace or anything like that, it’s that he’s not a natural ball magnet and doesn’t affect the game like that. It’s fine, let’s all get over it and accept that he can play on the left (will probably be better with a good lb behind him or baines finding him with vertical balls to feet) and he’ll be sound there.

Think on sat I would be surprised if Niasse and Coleman started, also be surprised if we get anything out of it.

Niasse did well, and I think it will be a similar sort of game so...maybe he does need to play? Put himself about and occupy defenders? Made a good case for himself but obviously, we all know his faults and they make a fine case for Tosun or DCL.

One of the biggest problems we have this summer is finding someone else who can do what Rooney can do in the middle of the pitch. Either someone younger who can come on when he goes off, or someone better and younger who can ultimately replace him in the middle of the pitch.

People saying Niasse makes a nuisance of himself but why can't Tosun? In fact why can't any striker, hard graft shouldn't really be an optional extra. By all accounts every report we have on Tosun says that he's puts himself about and never gives up. Sounds like he's exactly what we need up top, once he finds his feet.

And did in the Spurs game.

Can only assume that we weren’t expecting loads of the ball so wanted guaranteed running, whereas Tosun might need more time physically for what can be a thankless task.

Gruesome twosome in the middle.

Cuco required to do more with the ball on the left.

Williams ahead of Holgate, even though the latter has been the better defender.

Yeah, that’s a nightmare. Fair enough if we scrap points out of it but the chopping and changing is getting old. We have one team that works. Fucking play it. If Arsenal beat the team that works... so be it. It's better than watching the ball come back at us for 90 minutes.

It'll be an accomplishment to make it out of our own half with that team.

I think Keane and Pickford are the best forward passers in that group. And Walcott is the only person in the front three I trust to control the ball.

That team is like a piece of anti-football performance art.

The lineup is basically accepting they're gonna have all the possession, with a backs to the wall, keeping it very tight, with enough quality/unpredictability on the break to maybe nab a goal the handful of times we make it into their final third.

It's gonna be grim as fuck to watch, and we're almost certainly going to lose, but in terms of an approach to us coming out of the Emirates with anything to show for it, it's probably as good an approach as any.

It is deffo going to be that team like, you can just tell. It makes too much sense.

Personally think we’re giving them too much credit, but to be fair they’ve been fantastic at home and we’ve been awful away, so I can understand it I’m just disappointed and I don’t really think it will work because Sam said we need good forward passes and we don’t have anyone who can do that. Rooney in the middle would help a lot but in that sense but would probably make us weaker.

If the wing backs could attack and you played a midfielder who did something instead of schneiderlin the shape wouldn't be that bad

Hate picking on individual players because limited options have dictated some have had to step in out of position etc, but there is no need to play Shniderlin, don't like him because he has talent but he's a no bottle bad attitude merchant, what does he bring after a good result the other night, just can't fathom this.

Wouldn't be surprised to see us race into a 2-0 lead hitting them on the counter with that front three.

We'll lose 3-2 like but can defo see Walcott and bolasie having a lot of space to run into

Only issue with that is we don't have one player who can start a counter with a killer pass. Morgan can do it but he's allergic to forward passes it seems.

I don't know how accurate or reputable Squawka are but it would seem all this "he never passes forward" is a bit of a myth? 624 passes this season, 83% passing accuracy of which 80% are forward passes. Granted that could literally be a diagonal that goes a foot forward but I do think the 'never passes forward' accusation us massively exaggerated.

Exactly.

Attacking wing-backs are essential for this type of formation, as is a CB who can play it out from the back (which we don't have)

Kenny would be ok in this formation if he wasn't going to spend the vast majority of the match having to defend, which he will probably have to.

He’s a great passer he’s just not a very progressive passer. Can switch play effortlessly and find the nearest man no problem, doesn’t fuck up on the ball THAT often I wouldn’t say, it’s just balls into the final third, like say rooneys for walcotts goal in the week, he wouldn’t even think to try it never mind pull it off.

If Sam has been drilling him to just weight a few into the channels and rely on pace then he could do fine.

Apart from Schneiderlin, I think it's a decent enough team. Three attackers who provide pace and width, one winger capable of goals whilst the other two bring more of an unpredictable quality. Considering we're never going to go there and dominate (especially under Allardce) then I think it's set up pretty well on the counter.

i dont mind the 3 at the back,, it just depends if we have attacking players who can link up play and break.. if we just sit back and invite pressure.. we're goingt concede.. and when we concede one this season.. we seem to let in +3. So i'd start with an attacking team.. instead of giving up before we even start

on a side note.. we used to hate Moyes/Martinez/Koeman, for playing safe against the big teams.. going there for a point.. Somehow Sam Allrardyce has managed us to be even more scared against these teams, just inviting them to have wave on wave of attack.. he's done worse infact by setting up to contain the likes of WBA,Bournemouth and Swansea.. truly shocking how we have fallen, what makes that even worse is.. WBA should have beaten us twice!!

sorry; onto the team

                Pickford
   Holgate  Keane Mangala
Kenny                              Martina
                    Gueye
         Davies        Siggurdsson

                  Walcott
                    Tosun

what i'd prefer is

                 Pickford
Kenny Holgate  Mangala  Martina

             Gueye   Davies
Walcott                             DCL
                  Siggurdsson
                      Tosun

The game plan is obv to keep it 0-0 until 60 minutes and then get attackers on.

But everytime we’ve parked the bus save Anfield, the opposition gets 25+ shots and eventually a defensive error costs us.

I dunno, if we can quiet and frustrate the crowd the Wenger out atmosphere could appear and really help

With no creative players on the pitch (Coleman, Sigurdsson, Rooney) who could at least be a threat to move the ball forward and release pressure, and also without our defender who is best suited to the formation (Holgate).

Its so poor defensively, its the worst start i can ever remember. Mangala was at fault for 2 of the goals by not doing just absolutely basic defending. Why did he play wingbacks or 3-5-2/5-3-2? Why isn't Rooney playing? I understand why Coleman might not play 90 mins but why not the first half? Why is Mangala starting 3 days after joining us? Why does Schneiderlein keep getting games?!?! Why is Bolasie and Walcott both playing when we need good defensive players in midfield. There are so many questions that I just can't keep comprehend what a shitstorm we are in with this manager.

I'm not sure sacking Allardyce now is the answer. Three permanent managers in a season is dicey territory. Plus, I'd rather save that money for the summer because this squad badly needs upgrading.

Sack Walsh now*, get his replacement in to start preparing for the summer, limp over the line, give Allardyce the axe in May.

* If the people in charge really do like him (I can't imagine why, but okay)... just demote him back to a scouting role. That's what he's supposed to be good at.

Edit: Assuming it's easier to sack him in May.

This is nothing to do with the players. This is all on the manager. We have a cracking squad of players, and a lot of quality. However most of them are actually good at playing football. This manager wants them to play hoofball and attack versus defence where they never attack.

Literally fuck off. Not one of those 5 defenders is good enough. Pickford is massively overrated too imo.

its not the defenders, its the tactics of constantly defending with no out ball... Koeman used to do this too, dont know wtf the managers think will happen if you let a  team like Arsenal have 85% possession. you could have the best defenders inthe world, but they will also concede if we have no attacking play or poessesion.

Chinese or Indian for tea?

You can't go wrong with either in my book, Lizz.

Recently I tried an Indian without a peshwari naan or paratha, and I had much more room left for the curry, musroom rice, onion rice, onion bhaji, and mushroom bhaji.

Chinese for me is all about the starters; sesame prawn toast, ribs, dumplings, sweet and sour chicken and pork balls, and then maybe a chow mein, with special fried rice, and duck, pineapple, and cashews, either hoi sin or teriyaki.

Horrendous this, and most could see it coming, especially once we knew the team news.

It seems a pointless exercise keeping him much longer as the manager. His side's have always played terrible football, that can maybe be excused if you are winning or avoiding defeats but we are mostly getting beat and very rarely playing anywhere near good football

Fully expecting him to word his interview in a way that removes himself from blame and focuses on the players not following his instructions

I've had enough now. Ready to sack him

No, people want Sam sacked because he is shit at his job. He has never been good apart from in the 90s with Bolton, and even then the shitness of the league and a couple of quality players bailed him out.

Everything about his style stinks and the sooner he leaves the better

And after the England national job fiasco, no club with an ounce of self-respect would have gone near him.  It was, is, and will always remain humiliating beyond belief.

The one position you might say we had covered is centre back, with 5  who can play in the position so what does this genius do? Find a 6th who’s worse than the other 5. Priceless.

We’re desperate for a replacement for Lukaku. He spends 25M to replace him and then continues to plays the hapless, comical, figure of fun that is Niasse.

We’re the worst team in the Premier League, with the worst manager and won’t win another game this season.

And BTW, what the fuck is the point of Sammy Lee? He claps a lot and shouts Come On. Just a fucking seal without the words.

It might just be pure confirmation bias at this point (on my end) and yes, this is a meaningless half of football, but it really does feel like Davies is our most influential player right now.

Nothing good happens when he's on the bench.

Something Extra: The small army of midfielders we've spent so much money on should be ashamed at how much more effective this scrappy 19 year old is. (And that's not to undersell Davies' ability because he's quite good technically.)

No surprise a Davies ball into space is instrumental. If only we’d made the change (and put Rooney on) after 20 mins

That would've been Allardyce admitting he got it wrong, though, and he doesn't have the humility for that sort of palaver

Bringing Tosun on at 5-1 is just gonna kill his confidence too ....totally inept at best .

The sad thing is, there's certainly an element of that happening. Some of the players are clearly not doing what they're asked to, and that is hurting us.

But he's used this excuse so many times and refuses to take any part of the blame so stubbornly, that people just dismiss it. And of course it's generally the same players that let us down, and he keeps picking them, so the idea that it surprised him is ludicrous, unless he's incredibly thick.

The formation and player selection was 100% why we failed today.

Should have kept same formation as Wednesday, and made maybe 2-3 changes. Kenny for Coleman being an obvious one. Maybe 2 more. But that's it.

As you said before though if you’re constantly changing players then there’s a good chance that errors will be made.

We know that it doesn’t take much at PL level to get walloped if things are wrong.

We’re making it more likely by changing attack, midfield and defence game by game almost, even when we’ve done well in the previous game.

Unless players couldn’t physically play (Coleman) it should have been exactly the same.

We got walloped anyway (I know that wasn’t his plan and it’s a bit disingenuous to suggest it’s that easy to not happen) but it felt like we’d found a decent balance for once this season so why not give them a chance to build more understanding together even if only for the games coming up.

When 1 or 2 are shit, it's their fault, when the entire team is shit, the coach is to blame. He has operational control of the shape and style of the team, a bad workman blames...

When you have a big embarrassing defeat, the ability of a manager to own the blame, should not be underestimated given the humiliation and focus.

1st half - spineless, clueless peformance that was reliant on us not conceding with 5 changes, a holding midfielder who has obviously given up his career in schniederlin and two donkeys in williams and mangala. who along with martina didnt have a clue where to be, who to track and at times how to do the basics.

2nd half - the changes helped, davis should always start before morgan. DCL did well for his goal but was naive for their 5th. Mangala improved, tosun moved well but didnt get the ball once in the 18 yard box, and we actually tried but by then they had taken their foot of the gas and it was easy for them. Niasse was unlucky not to score from a great ball from theo.

Allerdyce takes the blame as the players obviously didnt understand their roles defensively, he setup without any real chance of scoring without an error from them.  He also picked schneiderlin and I'd rather have any of our midfielders in there aheas of him.

I Did too, but people in charge should have a clearer perspective and this is what worries me most, the bloke in charge hasn't got a fucking clue. We sack out manager and we don't look to progress, we look to secure a place in a league that we've been in since the off, a league where we just finished 7th and strengthened our squad immeasurably. We are rotten to the core with ineptitude, we have no vision and are a desperate and dysfunctional team on and off the field.

Exactly.Bournmouth and Swansea have both beaten them lately by having a go at them, atacking their weak link .What do we do? surrender before a ball is kicked.I'd like to say I'm supprised but I'm not,i knew he would do it,i knew he would revert to type,i knew he would pack the team with defenders and defensive midfielders,i knew it would blow up in our faces within 10 mins,i knew we would get hammered.I hoped I'd be wrong,i hoped he'd pick the same team that won in the week, but deep down I knew he wouldn't.My mate handed me his phone at half 4 with the team on it and we all knew what was coming,we could all see it.All except the clown that's paid tens of thousands a week, millions a year. He's a fucking fraud.

the players have proven this season and last season (one's still here and new) that they can't play adapt to playing  3 at the back-

can still play a back 4 and play counter attacking-

the only thing we have been consistant at is being shite -need to keep a stable , same back 4 unless palyers are injured -  can't keep fooking changing it around

saying we setup to match how swansea palyed them is utter shite-  cos watched the Swansea game and they pressed the fook out of them and did not start defensively

I am still seething over this debacle tonight. I saw this result coming as soon as the team selection was announced. What good manager makes 5 changes to a winning team thats just won its first game after a run of poor results and is trying to build its confidence. What manager leaves half of his best team on the bench (most of the 5 who were changed!!) against one of the top six but beatable teams in the league. Why are players that have lost their ability to play as professional footballers allowed to continue playing badly with poor skill, decision making and a total lack of desire and bottle to fight for the club, the manager and the fans. None of the defenders in the starting line up tonight deserve to play for Everton, they were a shambles and a disgrace. I have been an Evertonian for 55 years and cannot remember a worse lack of coherence and pride by an Everton team than the ones I have witnessed this season. Something is wrong in the club that causes a good team from last season to become the abysmal outfit it has become after spending Over £150M on supposedly good players. Someone at the most senior level should be investigating this and explaining to the fans what they intend to do about it.
Once a Blue always a Blue but our patience is being stretched to the limit, will someone please sort out this mess and soon.

the only thing we have been consistant at is being shite -need to keep a stable , same back 4 unless palyers are injured -  can't keep fooking changing it around

saying we setup to match how swansea palyed them is utter shite-  cos watched the Swansea game and they pressed the fook out of them and did not start defensively

It's as sure as night follows day,WE CAN'T PLAY WITH 3 CB'S,WE ARE A FUCKING SHAMBLES WHEN WE DO.What more evidence does this buffoon need.Koeman couldn't resist it against the better sides, despite every time he did it we were a goal down inside 10 mins and were always well beaten. It's almost like a mental illness, they know it won't work, yet they can't help doing it.

This is the point I made a few pages back.As soon as I seen that team sheet I knew we were fucked.I hoped against hope he would pick the same team that won in the week.In my heart of hearts I knew he wouldn't.

For such a defensive team they didnt even get a yellow card between them, probably because you actually have to make tackles to get them

I think this part is the part we haven't talked about enough. I think when he said we set up to play them like Swansea did showed his incompetence. It made him sound reductive and all he thought was we could just play them how Swansea did with no more thought than that.

We aren't built like Swansea and our players are different style players than Swansea has. Its almost as if he thinks he can watch any match of a team we play lose and then decide we will beat them the same way without taking into account any of our weaknesses or strengths.

Also shows that Leicester game was the anomaly, we were lucky to play them at a low ebb.
