Title: Everton v Newcastle (MNF)
Post by: Shogun on April 16, 2018, 03:15:10 AM
I know we're awful and they've hit a bit of form but it's Newcastle so I think we'll win.

The team will be:

Pickford
Coleman Keane Jagielka Baines
Gana Schneiderlin Rooney
Walcott Tosun Bolasie

Hope Sky get all the entertainment they deserve for putting this one TV.

Wonder if the Park end will be singing the same song as the lads were down in  Swansea.

Hope fucking so regardless of the result.

Grim that Newcastle could go above us if they win.

Edit: just noticed that they've got a game in hand and are only 1 point behind us anyway! What a time to be alive  :'(

Sam will have one eye on the power of Ayoze Perez and the energy of Jonjo Shelvey so expect us try and contain them for the first 70 minutes before letting us off the leash with an extra forward player after 75 minutes. With these being a form team.

Unfortunately I think it will be too, plus it wont be the usual walk over home win against Newcastle either, with the FSW in charge of them. Davies hasn't had the best season, but I think we create more and play better when he's in there, id drop either schneiderlin or gana to the bench, Rooneys record against these is excellent so has to start

Indeed.

Any formation can be attacking or defensive, it is all dependant on the Manager’s wishes, the player’s aptitude and execution, and the quality of the opposition.

I think we've been blinded by this formation so we play it regardless, without the players who can really do it justice. Football seems to go in waves and this formation seems to be trend of the moment, which is great when you have a goalscoring threat across the front with pace and energy like a Mane and Salah on either flank with a mobile lad up top who can interchange with them. We have a willing lad in Tosun who hasn't the pace to swap positions and two players past their best in Walcott and Bolasie.

If we're going to persist with this then we need to buy players to fit it which means mid- 20's tops, who can run forwards and get back all day long.

I don't think Walcott is past his best. Improve on Tosun and Bolasie and Gana and Rooney and Schneiderlin and Jags and Keane and Baines and you'll see a better player.

She watches it go long to the man on the wing
another flick on to no one
like the manager, no courage, guile or grace
maybe we'll have a shot in the next game

A conman, what he serves belongs in a bedpan
Tired of hearing insult after excuse
not parking a bus, it's more like a static caravan
he should be embarrassed to be there

oh think twice, we don't want another season with Walsh and Allardyce

  Walcott    Klaassen     Vlasic
                   Tosun

He'll push them to be on the front and attacking and all supporting Tosun

If we win, it'll look like good attacking football in front of Moshiri and everyone listened to his instructions

If we lose, it'll be the fans fault, he was just playing players they wanted even though he knew better

I like this - especially the Davies / Klaassen axis because both can go forward. Think we'd get fucked if they both went up but this could be interesting. I would change only slightly to:

                      Pickford
    Coleman Keane Jagielka Baines
                Davies Klaassen
            Walcott Rooney Vlasic

If it goes well he can take full credit and possibly (hopefully not) sage his job. If it goes badly he can say he dud what the fans wanted.

Uninspiring stuff. Although, tbh, I’d only want Klassen or Vlasic in the team to pique my interest a bit, not because of any conviction they’d improve us.

Davies in for Schneiderlin is probably our best team but it’s still pretty shite.

For all the money we’ve spend, we really shouldn’t be resting out hopes on random fringe players giving us an X factor.

Fuck of. Neither Vlasic nor Klassen on the bench. 3 defensive midfielders in the team. With all due respect to Beni Baningime, who has looked alright (but just alright) in his appearances, there is no fucking way he is a better player right now than Klaassen. I get Klaassen has had trouble adapting but he has captained Ajax, scored 9 times in 15 champions league appearances, and scored 4 times in 16 caps for the Netherlands. Come on.

Bolasie is no longer a winger. He's just a guy who plays wide left now who doesn't do very much with the ball. Which is a shame as you can see he wants to do well but he's done now, his potentially career-ending injury has all but ended his career.

In Bolasie's defense, I don't think he is good as an inverted winger, largely because he is not great at crossing with his left and always need to cut it back to cross, slowing the attack down. His better pre-injury games for us were on the right side, where he could use his pace and put in a good ball.

If Gana isn't sitting deep and sweeping up, he shouldn't be on the pitch.

It's painful watching him try to play between the lines and pass into the final third.

Playing him out of position when we have at least two other players in the squad who could slot straight into their natural position is piss poor management. I wouldn't expect anything less.

Rooney and bolasie off surely

No direct replacement for Rooney on the bench. Game is crying out for a dynamic no 10 with a bit of pace who can carry the ball. Surely Vlasic should be in the squad and could have done better than the current pedestrian displays of Rooney.

The problem is there are no patterns.

If the ball is with either full back, who can say what will happen next (in a good sense)?

If the ball is in the centre, what combinations will we use to engineer space out wide?

Schneiderlin's playing well. Yanick needs a bomb up his arse, Gana's not playing too badly, but he's not very effective further up the pitch. Waynes on a 4/10 atm. He's giving the ball away too often.

It's definitely part of it.

I think having actual width also helps because Schneiderlin's a pretty safe passer and the side-to-side stuff is his bread and butter.

The pattern issue is emphasised by people’s suggestions to change things.

Most are all replace player x with y.

That’s because the game play is solely based on individual moments. It should be x, y or z is letting the system down.

But suggestions are based on rolls of the dice essentially.

Schneiderlin is masively benefitting from Newcastle's pressing, as it forcing him to play quicker and be mobile rather than getting the ball and having an age to wait for someone yo make a move to receive the ball.  Neither Gana or Rooney has the composure, legs or ability to deal with what they're doing.

A Schneiderlin, Davies Klaassen midfield here would have been good.

Been like this for 3.5 years.

Second half of last season there was rotation of the ball in the middle until Schneiderlin could spray it out wide.

Or there was overloading on the right so that Barkley could drift to the middle and play through balls.

Or generally, how can we engineer a through ball to Lukaku.

Should have won that semi final against Man U instead of bottling it and maybe he could have been the guy to help unlock it

Least amount of points at home in a season since 3 points for a win was introduced, a totally shambolic defence and refusing to budge from a style that wasn't working led to his downfall though, and the 100% correct decision to sack him

Just out of interest would you have kept him for the next season?

I kind of feel that it was more of a downward spiral for 2 seasons that was likely to get worse, rather than a sudden return to the form of his first season

Think it was to toxic by then, sadly. But I’d much rather have given Martinez the transfer kitty Koeman had and seen where we’d end up given the sort of players he could attract and the charm offensive he’d have offered for bringing them here.

The last part was the biggest issue. If he’d been searching for answers we’d all have said give him more time. We are desperately wanted it to work. His problem was he absolutely refused to budge from his utterly flawed thinking. Some of his ideas seem to go against the very basics of football

I liked Martinez and his delusions to be honest, but its true unfortunately, he had to go.

I never said there’s was but they do have a common methodology.

None of the talent and none of the hard work is a recipe for disaster. His ideas were lunacy. We’ll not bother defensively cos we’ll just keep the ball. You’d think that were a daft plan from a Barca manager. With our limited squad it was crazy

Read an interview he did with carragher and honestly it was just scary. Was as if he’d lost the plot and was in complete denial

Martinez absolutely had to go.

Can't believe the same fella is still trotting out the same stuff from two years ago.

Considering your position on Allardyce I’m not in anyway surprised you didn’t like Martinez.

But football has moved on since the 70’s and it’s time we did.

I almost resent the existence of our old shitty managers because there’s always a chance we’ll end up debating how they stack up against our new shitty managers.

When really, they’re all shit and who cares.

Lets be honest, we all fell for Martinez as soon as he mentioned the school of science and invited Kendall back to FF, that season we played some of the best football ive ever seen us play, destroying Arsenal at home was right up there, but the bubble soon burst when he got found out, he refused to change his ways so had to go

Martinez inheritted a good squad with excellent organisation and appetite for hard work built by Moyes.

Moyes is the manager none of the subsequent bosses have yet been better than for Everton.

Once Top 4, Top 7 eight times, Euro football, Cup final. All with no real money.

We are miles further away from the top teams now.

"What was wrong with our style?" he said to Sky Sports.

"You can't knock our football. You can knock some of our passing that went astray, but you can't knock me for that. I don't pass the ball.

"Apart from the last 10 minutes we dominated the game and there was only going to be one winner."

Well nobody will say they enjoyed going to the game, but at least the predictions of rioting, demos, chanting, placards etc never happened. We won through hard work against a physically strong Newcastle team, despite stinkers by Rooney, Bolassie and after he came on, Davies. Schneiderlin played well deserved his ovation and we missed him. Three harder games to come and then restore our hopes with a new manager appointment.

Why do no journos ever say - “well one shot on target after dominating a team with one intention - that’s not very good is it? Do you not think good chances created roughly equates to style in most fans minds? Providing moments of quality? I mean, it basically ended up a shoot out between which team could make at least one chance to take the points...top teams simply don’t allow that to happen, whereas everton only ever seem capable of getting a goal when it gets to a scrambly shoot out shitshow, what do you think that says about your style? That at home, against a counter attacking team with no intention of playing the ball, that you can have the ball for 60% of the time and yet still be so wildly out of control and in the end only saved by what looks to be a diving header with a mind bending angle? Why don’t you create more good chances to win the game, even at home, even when given the ball as much as you like?”

Please tell me he didn't say "I don't make the players pass it" for a second time this season.

Imagine Guardiola coming out with that.

By the way, nobody needs a new manager in this squad more than Tom Davies. A manager who'll teach to take more care on the ball but still be able to move us up the pitch. Not this nobhead who'll just drop him and pretend training isn't way to improve players.

He knew how to play the public. He was a very convincing conman with very little substance behind it. He's the type who could very easily become a multi-millionaire by charming the pants off rich old spinsters and walking off into the sunset with their cash while still getting them to say he was a lovely man. In effect it's what he did it to Dave Whelan and Bill Kenwright, two old saps.

He is always allowed by the press to shift the blame ie the performance is down to the players the 3 points is down to me  . How anyone within the club can want any more of him than this season I just don't know . Coaching surely includes stringing a few passes together . He is happy with the fact that an over hit cross and a deflection back into Walcotts path saved his arse . Not that he wouldn't have garnered something for himself from the 0-0 " We have ended Newcastles winning streak , kept another clean sheet and basically dominated the game " .

No. He's been here a season and a half and apart from the first half dozen games and the last half dozen games he's been a disgrace and hasn't given a shit both on and off the pitch. You think that's acceptable? He's one of the senior pros who we need to be letting go to start afresh with a new mentality and a fresh start.

...............I agree he's been absolutely dire this season until recently but he's not on his own. Keane for example has been dreadful but now showing signs of his true form. Gana has been up and down too. I thought all the three played well last night . We can't keep overhauling the squad every season .

We haven't overhauled the squad yet. We've just added to it and added to it to give us the biggest squad in our history but their is no upturn in quality on the pitch. There is an ingrained, defeatist mentality to the squad which shows when we go a goal down, we fold like a house of cards. Senior players heads go down and it's embarrassing. I'd be saying goodbye to Jags, Williams and Schneiderlin in the summer and setting about getting real leaders in their place.

BIT worried about Tom tbh. Another few examples today of what happens when Tom tries to move up the pitch - has no pace, no acceleration, no 1v1 ability, so is immediately caught up by an opposing midfielder and collapses to win a free kick...not terrible like, could be worse of course, but I am still wondering what sort of player he is.

Sad but true, although he doesn't help himself by repeatedly missing easy 5 yard passes. I think a lot of the disillusionment at us as a club manifests itself in easy targets at times and it's usually our own that get it harder.
