Title: Rennes v Everton - Saturday 28 July - 5:30pm
Post by: Lincs Toffee on July 27, 2018, 08:50:04 PM
Well I'm hoping for a significant improvement on last nights performance and hope to see something more that resembles our starting XI, Richarlison I feel is going to impress, be nice to see that link up with Baines again and also to see how he links with Siggy.

Silva confirmed last night there will be x2 different XIs again. I think it's time to start playing a full XI for 90 minutes now for the last two friendlies

I don't think fitness will be our problem according to reports about the amount of training that MS has got us doing.

yep, lots of seasoned professionals at our club have stated this is what training should be/best training they had for years...

but lots of people in the match thread kept going on about, the result/performance doesnt matter.. its about match sharpness.. i disagree, its about playing your best players, getting them settled/suited to the system and give them some time to develop partnerships around the pitch.

Surely 90 minutes for as many of our likely Wolves XI needs to happen here and Valencia, to breed familarity, solidity, confidence, and momentum?

Yeah maybe itís a bluffing tactic, so our rivals underestimate us at the start of the season, but really weíve been training like lunatics and will burst out of the blocks against Wolves and tear them a new arse hole.

But also maybe not. Maybe weíre just shit.

i really dont expect us to be challenging for 6th, until atleast 2 seasons  time.. until then i want to see some progress, a style of play thats attractive and cohesive.. and i want to see players progressing..

if thats asylum talk, then thats pretty biased.. im not expecting any sort of miracles.. but i didnt expect a team to beat us 3-0 who got promoted from 2 tiers below us last season.. 1-0 loss fine.. but the way the match went. it was a shambles..
think its saner to think that thinking that sort of result is worthy of being in an asylum.

Improvement comes from realism and criticism, too many players have delivered less than we had before after spending a fair amount of money {a lot for us} If that trend isn't cause for questions nothing is.

Walcott thing is a bit worrying. Hopefully we get some sort of time frame on his return soon. The fact theyíre not really talking about it though makes me a bit concerned it might be a while yet.

As for Lookman not traveling...not impressed at all with the attitude of a player that young, itís pretty shitty behaviour.

One of those times you want to be a bit irrational and stick him in the reserves for a season.

Yeah, I wish the info wasnít so vague, particularly as those not available (Walcott, Lookman, Calvert-Lewin, Baningime, Holgate) could really add a lot to us right now and for the season ahead.

So far with only 1 signing, possibly not the most urgent of positions, minus a few sparks of forward passing and movement, it's been the same old shit as last season. The new training regime doesn't appear to have improve the defending one little bit. As for playing two completely different teams in each match so far, when will we see a fully fit team for 90 minutes? If it's the Wolves game, we are in serious shite yet again. Now, if by some miracle, M and M get the signings they want, maybe things will improve, but again, this late in pre season doesn't give the new boys time to settle into the new environment unless they hit the ground running.

Agreed. Although with only a couple of games left, I guess it would be nice to see the team take shape a bit, and a bit of confidence gathered for the players.

Having said that, I've seen teams have amazing pre-seasons and then start the season poorly, and have rubbish pre-seasons and start the season well, so I'm not sure it particularly means anything.

Surely the manager knows who's fit and who isn't, and is aware how long a football match is too....he's managed fast and fit football teams before .

A "push" by Richarlison, maybe? Nobody really knows. Looked good to me.

kek, the oracle who gets abusive and calls people names, when he dont agree with their views.

that type of  benevolence is almost godly. not withstanding this is a forum, for Everton fans, its not about abusing others cos they dont agree with your views.

surely an oracle can convey himself where he doesnt need to call people names.. but if thats how he gets his kicks, then so be it.

I do not understand the shouts for him to start alongside Jags.  There is absolutely, 100%, no fucking way that will work.  Jags/Holgate is at least a maybe, but Jags is no longer young enough to make up for Keane's lack of pace.  Especially in this system.

So much for Silva getting an extra 10-20% out of these players, thatíd at least guarantee us 7th. Bollocks, this team is utter dogshit. The defence is shit, not just because Keane is shit and Jags is fucked, but also because we have no intelligence or cammanding captain organising and vocally dragging players back and recalling full backs, spotting when an opposition break is brewing, etc. As well as 1, probably 2 centre backs we also need a Vierra type player at the heart of things. How many times are we going to see us attack attack attack, then quickly get stretched and hit on the break in a blink of an eye.

Even if the concern isnít relegation, there should be some concern about being genuinely competitive with the teams above us.

We simply have to start closing that gap, which means we have to get some better players in. Itís not enough to float around the PL as the gap just grows that weíre supposedly trying to close and instead of building on good younger players like Richarlison and Pickford we end up selling them.

Right now fairly large parts of this team/squad is a concern going into the season. Keane is an obvious concern, but given his age itís hard not to wonder about Jagielka now too. I think we desperately need a creative CM but if I had to choose Iím starting to think itíd be best to prioritize a couple of CBs.

Rennes look a good side here, though.

They are powerful, they press really quickly, their passing is crisp and precise, and their movement looks slick.

Our passing has lacked zip, and weíve often taken too many touches on the ball in defence and midfield, mainly because the movement (Richarlison apart) has been pretty static up top.

Keane is either a dreadful player or he has the confidence of a lifelong stutterer. I would imagine the truth lies somewhere in between. Either way, he isnít going to do very well for us.

It's ok us being shit in places as long as it's recognised how bad some players are, the worry is wether the powers that be see it, they seem to try and shut the gate after the horse has bolted too often, this year it's the centre half situation, they'll probably scramble now to sign one and buy another donkey in panic.

That should be the calming factor here, weíre linked with players most would say weíre lacking. CB, LB, striker and some central midfield links.

Its a new bunch of people in charge of transfers though, so itís just whether or not we can pull off those signings we need. Therein lies the doubt.

No mate. The side which has started. Two should be subs and Keane shouldn't be at the club. Only one holding midfielder. Schneiderlin is a cart horse. Sandro can go.

No, Silva sides earlier in his career were built on their defence. In England he's managed two poor clubs with very limited players, and he's chosen to go with a more offensive approach to overcome their limitations.

No, Silva sides earlier in his career were built on their defence. In England he's managed two poor clubs with very limited players, and he's chosen to go with a more offensive approach to overcome their limitations.

I certainly hope thats the case Dylan mate. We still need better at the back though.

If it was, mission accomplished.

Back to this, though: if most of us accept that part of Martinezí early success was down to inheriting an extremely well-drilled side that he then inspired and liberated, by the same token we should expect Silva to struggle early on with a team suffering from the negative, flabby hangover of the previous regime.

If Silva has a plan it is harder to crack than the DaVinci Code .I don't see where he is going with this lot .All my life I have loved EVERTON but I have no idea what comes next .They (Rennes) exploited so many weaknesses today ,as said before the premier sides will lap this up .The main worry for me is that he seems to have settled on a team and they have very little idea or creativity ,they seem to have no plan to use our best striker ( he barely got a  kick) and we have no nouse in midfield .I feel sorry for all the season ticket holders .

Spineless display, no excuses, outfought and outplayed, Jagielka and Keane are one of the weakest, poorest combinations at centre half I've ever seen. Jagielka has an excuse, he's on his last legs, who the fuck justified spending £30m on Keane ? The cunt should be shot, put him up for sale and take whatever they offer.
Sigurdsson hardly put a pass right all game, Tosun was never involved apart from another header he should have buried, we are just awful, I'm half thinking these are trying to get Silva sacked.
Plus points Richarlison, played well, looks a player and took his goal well. Coleman was excellent our mom. Schneiderlin and Gueye played well together and Baines played okay. Sandro flattered to deceive, no end product.
I know it's only pre season  but surely we can defend better than this, almost every time Rennes went forward they looked like scoring, just like the previous friendly. Never want to see Keane in an Everton shirt again.
Sorry to sound like this but that was embarrassing to watch.

Digne needs to get bough soon, start and hopefully pick up and retain his form. I think we need two centre backs to do the same. Our defence is fucking woeful and opposition managers will do exactly what has been happening in preseason. Priority one.

Na not for me thought Schneiderlin / Gueye tried to go forward especially in the second half as much as they could. Trouble was the ball hardly stuck, Tosun was pretty anonymous imo. When Gueye went off, was it 2 or 3-1 down, we were wide open. As I said our centre of defence was no where to be seen.

Yep. Painfully highlighted in transition when our midfield canít cover the ground to breakup attacks. Also, the main reason we canít maintain possession, especially in the opposition half. If you canít keep the ball and constantly lose it, youíre going to put the defence under pressure.

A solid center back pairing and the scoreline wouldn't have been that. Not to mention we scored a perfectly good goal that was disallowed. We need a center defence asap though. Get that sorted and we have a foundation to work from. Jags and Keane both let the side down today.

Just so one paced, unimaginative and lacking in tough defensive awareness. Like I said not a redeeming feature amount them and considering their ages thereís no potential for improvement either.

Weíll get cut through by a lot of teams with them 3 and then itís onto a very slow and ponderous back line in reverse gear.

This is getting beyond comprehension. We have had so many managers in such a short time. They all can't be totally useless, so the rot has to be in the team.
Maybe time to start connecting the dots.

Oh yes, I agree that Tosunís movement was non-existent, and that Gueye is a superb mopper upper, but even so, they donít possess enough quality to make an impression on most football matches

Just shows then that we need someone in midfield to hold the ball and be able to use it, a playmaker in the Arteta mould.
Stop flapping ya fannies it's a great team

Err we played in blue today mate.  :P

Yeah, Sigurdsson ainít it.

That three today, other than Ganaís mopping, were porous, ponderous, and guileless.

In fact, I would say they were nearly as poor as the central defensive partnership.

You are spot on. Its about the players, worst part is that alot of these players would prosper if They move to another club. Player for player there are some quality here, but Its a team-game. There is no balance in the team. If you gonna dominate games and be in possession Tosun is not your striker. If you gonna sit back and pump the ball he may be. Its not about the quality of the players individually it is all about the mix and the style to go with it. Worry number one all of our midfieldplayers are the balancing player ik the midfield. Gueye may be A world beater if he has someone running deep and behind at his side i.e Problem is that we need to get rid of 20 players and replace them and Thats not possible...I predict A season with not even one match that gonna give us belief. But we are not getting relegated.

Just need a decent coach, right?   ::)

Time for everyone to start calling like it is. We have below average players. Not only are they average at best, they all fit terrible together.

Don't worry lads, Big Sam will be back by xmas on £12 million a season contract. Lol

Arteta is another waiting in the wings, should things not work out ... (and it might not be long if things don't improve tout suite!)

I only hope with Marco that it's third time lucky trying to fix teams in relegation form. We need speed and quality at the back and the rest of the team playing like they know each other. After the Blackburn game, I said it's not yet time to panic.

Now it is. The alarms are going off! If we don't arrest these problems soon, we will be starting the season like Palace last year!

wont be worrying until we are 10 games in, and hope I won't be say oh well we saw all this coming after(seeing this in pre-season) and nothing has changed,    normally a team is vulnerable to pace or set plays ,   we are shite against both styles as seen in the last 2 games.

God forbid!

Mostly self inflicted mis fortunes though aren't they, and plenty of them easily foreseen, the recruitment has been a fucking shambles and questioned by quite a few on here every step of the way, i don't think anyone enjoys it  quite the opposite it's bloody awful to endure. This team is shit plain and simple it was before Allardyce and getting no better fast, as for Silva don't think he's the right man but praying like fuck to be wrong...
Blind faith is brilliant for the blind and the pre 10 age group, a player or member of staff are not automatically good because Everton want or sign them, especially the last couple of years, we just have to hope for enough to keep us in the prem and someone gets a grip soon.

4th manager, new DoF and the same old squad making the same old mistakes, game after game. Do you think that come the first game everything will magically improve? Not a chance! I'm not normally 'doom and gloom' but what is there to look forward to?

The amount of hatred Allardyce got for doing what we all knew he would do: steady the ship via grinding out points, was unjustified.  Yes, it was ponderous and frustrating, even more so when we were not winning. Deal with it; these players are soulless and bang average at best.

Silva deserves our support.  He's not a miracle worker FFS - this will take time.  Count me as one that was skeptical of hiring Silva, but this malaise is not his fault. It's been a shite squad under Big Sam and it remains so today.

The players were just picking up wages when it fell apart for Martinez and Koeman.  That's all they're doing now early days under the new manager.

Step one: Keane and Schneiderlin outta here

I hope when Pickford gets back between the sticks it will give the back 4 a bit more confidence,  he will also be commanding the box and barking the orders, using his great delivery technique to take the pressure off.
