Title: Everton v Huddersfield
Post by: Lincs Toffee on August 30, 2018, 04:21:14 PM
This will be an interesting game considering the number of injuries and suspensions we have accumulated, still think we will have enough at home for a win.

                   Pickford

Coleman   Holgate  Zouma   Digne

           Davies  Schnierdelin

                 Sigurdsson

Walcott         Tosun            DCL

Pretty sure it will be Baines instead of Digne though.

Get 3 points here and then 2 weeks break to sort out some of the injuries. We don't play WHU till the Sunday.

           Davies  Schnierdelin

                 Sigurdsson

Walcott         Tosun            Dowell/Sandro

I don't think DCL fits into a wide left position. He is either the main man up top or bench, as he has never impressed me there in the PL.

I would like to see Dowell given a start wide left as I think he is now ready to be tested after his spell at Forest last season. He could link very nicely with Baines and scores goals.

Its just a shame Lookman isn't fit (hopefully not moving) as he would start wide left.

That being said think it will be another 3-1

Think that might be it, I wouldn't be surprised if Silva still opted for Baines, maybe even with Digne further forward on the left

Can't really see any other options to be honest. Big fan of Davies as a box-to-box. But asking him to be a holding midfielder is a bit much for him at this age.

Baines and Davies in the middle with Digne in at LB - Baines is defensively minded and can also play nice, tidy passes forward. Plus less running for him now he's getting on a bit - he can stay deep when Davies goes forward.

Going back to Silva's comments I think he's going to have to knuckle down and do a lot more in training before gets anywhere near the pitch. Although with the current injuries he may well see the bench.

I can't see how we fill the bench without him tomorrow given I don't think anyone involved in the u23s tonight can be brought in?

Was worried about this but sounds like Schneiderlin will be playing so Him, Davies**, Sigurdsson in the middle.

Would probably go Walcott, Tosun, DCL because it’s solid and enough to win, but if they start Lookman then I’d be made up.

NBC having a mare, now the broadcast of Chelski/Cherries has gone (showing Wolves instead).

The Goodison faithful are falling in love with big Zouma, is right.

Mine went black for a while. Buffering a fair bit too, but I'm casting it from my laptop to tv  as well.

Wish there was an NBC Gold app for my tv.

DCL: another half-chance from the 6-yd box.  Let's go 4-4-2.

No need.

It is BECAUSE he is coming in from out wide that he is causing problems: harder to mark, mismatch with a full-back, drifting in, just like Richarlison.

Silva’s system is geared for this.

Too many possessions where our "front four” just stand horizontally in front of their defensive line. There's nothing the midfield (or the fullbacks) can do with that.

We need some sort of consistent movement between the lines or we're going to keep banging our head against the wall.

Still this.

Agreed. I still think overall it's been positive. Generally we've looked very good in attack but if you look at the attacking players we're missing, it's hardly surprising we were a bit blunt today, and we all know about the defence.

Does feel like we've dropped 6 points overall though. Always disappointing when you're trying to capitalise on the likes of Arsenal and Utd having bad starts.

After 4 league games. Unbeaten, with a few dropped points. Hardly crisis time.

Seems a bit early to be giving it the smug treatment.

Who said anything about a crisis?

I've not been a Silva detractor, I take more of a wait and see approach.

I'm just generally bemused by the number of people who go on about new managers as if they're the messiah after barely any time. It's the modern fan.

On a bright note, I like Digne.

We looked better first half but the injuries and absentees have accumulated to the point where we finished that game with a side missing potentially 5 or 6 starting players. It’s not an excuse when you saw our bench, it does make a difference.

Absolute shite, I always back the manager but Silva has struck me as one we should have avoided after seeing what happened at Watford.

When will managers get it through their heads that zonal is a shit system (in England at least) I don't remember it working well for a single manager.

Coleman was fucking awful as well, at least Baines knows not to go forward because he can't get back, don't remember Seamus ever having a worse game for us.

Well fuck me if this isn’t the first “Silva out” shout of the season ! That didn’t take long, let’s see if you were right in saying he is one we should have avoided in a couple of months shall we.

This is the type of game that we need to be able to win if we want a European spot.

We can talk about Tom Davies, but then many mention he's only 20. Atm he's causing the pace of the game to drop, so whether he's 20 or not, he needs to improve quite a lot to be a starter in the premier league. He's a good prospect, but his dwelling on the ball gave us a lot of problems today.

Kenny - Holgate - Williams - Martina

           Lennon - DCL - Gylfi

Siggy suffered from the same issues as tosun, nobody willing or able to play the ball to them when they made a good run.

He'd make 4 or 5 long busting efforts to close people down or get into space...and then he finally gets the ball somewhere dangerous and he's  blowing out of his arse and it breaks down.

I lost count of the number of times I watched him get visibly frustrated that he didn't get the ball after finding space.

Coleman’s been targeted a bit by opposing manager’s at the start of this season, and he’s been done a few times for pace.

He hasn’t been great going forward either.

Maybe he won’t be the same after that injury, plus, of course, he is turning 30 next month.

Not that easy. We should be on more points, not going by today’s game but the last away game. And there is context with two red cards and all the injuries.

8 pts would’ve been good between two away games and two home games. 6 pts is a bit disappointing, but again there is context given the side we finished the game with and our overall transition.

It’s hard to expect a complete transformation overnight and I’d still argue we’ve looked better than in recent seasons even with all these issues going on.

We've looked better than last year in some of the games so far, but haven't shown anything that'll have us challenging the top 6

Which after all the changes and new signings is pretty much to be expected

It's all this. Richarlison and Walcott are our game changers. Walcott was giving it a good go up until he hurt himself and then when he went off we could really see how mediocre we actually are.

Not having Richarlison for these two games is a killer. He would terrorize teams like this.

I fear another draw in 2 weeks and - I said it in the season prediction thread as well - a looooooong season of plodding along point by point like we are right now. Gonna have to tough it out.

Not particularly well to be honest. Although I thought we failed to take advantage of a Wolves side suffering stage fright, were lucky not to concede more against a one dimension Southampton side and should have been able to defend a two goal lead with less than ten minutes to go against Bournemouth. So I maybe less surprised than most.

One thing that people have to remember is that if we’re going to finish 7th (realistically we’re unlikely to be better than that) with about 60-65 points, and 65 would be a v good season for us (only done 65+ twice in PL I think and from where we were 3 of last 4 seasons) then you have performances and results like this, or the two away games, quite a lot.

In terms of overall mood and such that’s what people need to balance.

If you’re only finishing 7th then you generally get 7th performances on average.

6pts from 4 games is pretty much bang on the pace that will get you 7th.

You have no way of including extenuating circumstances in your view of results, do you?

Do you really think a point away to a newly promoted team in their first home game with 10 men, a point away to a team with form for comebacks when we also played 60 minutes with 10 men, and a point at home when decimated by injuries isn't progress? We should have had penalties in both the last two games too.

Last season we'd have lost all 3 of the drawn games.

That's the point though, we are likely to pick up this pace. We've got Richarlison to come back in, Gomes to get a game, Digne to settle and Bernard to hopefully add an exciting option. That's without even thinking about Mina as an extra defensive option. The likelihood is we will improve quite a lot in the coming months and aside from yesterday we have looked better than last season when we finished eighth.

we have only looked better than last season going forward. The rest is just the same as before. We gave up midfield to Huddersfield, defence all at sea for set pieces, and only 1 shot on target, 1 SHOT ON TARGET! At home. FFS come on. I agree with the 10 men against Wolves, but not Bournemouth as we went 2 up with 10 men. So that is unforgiving.

I agree with the 10 men against Wolves, but not Bournemouth as we went 2 up with 10 men. So that is unforgiving.

So if we only look better going forward and we finished eighth last year then that's the least we can hope for this season so that's progress no? And that's ignoring my point about the new additions

That's the point though, we are kindly to pick up this pace.

This isn't even a discussion for me. No excuses. Bournmouth and Huddersfield were 3 points each. We blew it.

We look better, it's going to take time. I get it. But those were dropped points. No excuses. We fucked it up.

I understand all the frustrations, and I'm sure we all share them. We could quite conceivably be sat here on 15 points, if things had been slightly different. But we've got to give things time. Klopp finished 8th in his first season, for example. It takes time to instill new methods in players who have been doing things differently for a long time.

I know its a boring message, because people want change now and want everything now, but it just doesn't happen like that. Look at Emery at Arsenal, Pellegrini at West Ham etc. There will be days like yesterday, and we need to keep things in context. Imagine when we lose a game 3-0 at some point. Is everything going to lose their shit?

While I agree with parts of this, I don't really see the point.

As a club, we're clearly in a better place off the field, and there have also been some encouraging signs on the pitch too. Hopefully even more so when the new players get involved properly. Zouma, for example, was great yesterday.

Of course, yesterday was frustrating but we're 4 games into the season! There are going to be games like this where teams sit in, but hopefully once all our options are back, we'll be better placed to break them down.

Annoying as it is, we just need to learn the lessons and move on.

Throughout the course of a season, it's quite normal to have a few games where you're not quite at the races. We have to remember that this team is still very much in transition, following the shit-storms that were the last 12-18 months of Martinez, a big chunk of Koeman's time here, then fucking Sam Allardyce and his fucking god-awful negative tactics.
It is going to take a little time for Silva to fully put his own personal stamp on the side, but unbeaten in the league so far, the signs are quite positive. Whilst we have had a relatively comfortable start in terms of fixtures, a couple of these games would have seen us defeated last season, so it's not all bad.
We have a few more players to bed in, Bernard, Mina  and Gomes, plus a few who are already settling in nicely, Richarlison, Zouma and Digne.
Let's look at the positives. Digne's cross for DCL's equaliser today was straight from the vintage Leigton Baines book of perfection, Zouma is already settling fast and looks like he has the potential to be a beast, and Richarlison was flying until that stupid sending off, which he will learn from.
We've got another two from Barcelona to come in yet, plus a little Brazilian who has Neymar keeping him out of the Brazilian national team.
The transition is going reasonably well. We've ditched a fair amount of shite and replaced with what looks like quality. Kurt Zouma or Ashley Williams? Richarlison or the current spoilt brat version of Kevin Mirallas? Lucas Digne or Cuco Martina? You decide...

Not worried about scoring but defence still all over the place, we have good individual defenders but don't seem organised at all, needs a lot of work back there.

I do think it's a general issue with 'society' now. Emery was getting slaughtered for losing his opening game to Man City. We hyper analyse every game to death now, and that leads to this anxiety and impatience.

In the past, managers would get months, or even seasons to build something. You wouldn't have every game under massive scrutiny.

Thing is, it's the way it is now. I'm not sure there's any way to change it or do anything about it. We're just gonna have to put up with people losing their shit every time we draw, or the manager doesn't make the right substitution or whatever else.

Unbeaten and stable

We could quite conceivably pick up 15 points from our next 5 games

I'm not ignoring the new additions. I agree they should improve the other departments. Jury is out on them until they've at least played some games. Don't you agree?

Agreed, we are in a better place both on and off the pitch generally speaking. But we have thrown possibly 4 points away needlessly.  And we are not learning lessons are we! 4 goals conceded from set pieces using zonal marking. Not closing down games when 2-0 up with 15 mins to go. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

Zonal marking - Silva's managerial weak point but work in progress

Silva also encourages quick thinking with fleet of foot on and off the ball - yesterday's disappointment

This season:

Championship winners Wolves (a) - 2-2
Southampton (h) - 2-1
Bournemouth (a) - 2-2
Huddersfield (h) - 1-1

Total: 6 points

Last season:

Championship winners Newcastle (a) - 1-0
Southampton (h) - 1-1
Bournemouth (a) - 1-2
Huddersfield (h) - 2-0

Total: 7 points

I think talk of an overall improvement on the pitch is premature, particularly after yesterday - albeit some areas are looking better, some worse. It's too early. It's going to take quite a while before we're able to know the longer-term impact the new manager and players will have, we're not yet in a position to judge.

Don't think you'll see the best of this Everton side until nearer Christmas when all the new signings are match fit and bedded into the team and the way we play. Patience, it's frustrating but it takes time.

Fair but we also are lacking a lot of potential first team players in this season's results.

I never thought I'd say this but "Thank God for the international break"

Pretty standard though. For example, last season our defence was completely fucked with Coleman (and Baines?) out for so long. Massively overlooked by many fans, but perhaps the biggest contributor to our awful first half of the season. Either that or the number of new players we tried to immediately integrate into the first team.

we were handed a very fortuitous opening few games, and we haven’t really made the most of it.

We look quite average, although with better attacking options than last year, and are shipping goals at a concerning rate.

Jury is out on any new player who hasn’t played significant minutes at this level, so there’s no guarantee one of them is going to step in and take us up a level.

However, very happy with Richarlison and Zouma looks good.

The lack of a good CM, back up for Coleman (or you know..), goals up top, and no natural replacement for Theo who is very injury prone are all issues, but I think generally we are going to be fine.

65 points still very much on the table, but I would like to see some significant improvement in how many chances we are allowing and how many chances we are creating.

Whilst we have dropped needless points to teams we should be beating, I do think we can make those points up in the bigger games this season.

Plus as has been said we’re following a pattern of a 7th placed team.

We better up our game against Soton in the cup, they’ve upped theirs now with Ings on fire.

I think creating we will be fine, especially when we're healthy. I thought we actually looked creative against Huddersfield.

Chances allowed are a big problem. Same as no killer CM. I  think the two somewhat go hand in hand though.

Can't stand dropping points. It just pisses me off. I should probably avoid this site after we do.

We would've lost that game last year easily ..

Baby steps moving forward ..I'm not that added about today's result tbh. ..we're still unbeaten and still learning the managers ways ... it will improve .

Sorry but this is ridiculous. We finished 8th last season and apparently won 10 of 19 home games. Claiming every result however shit is much better than we’d of done last season is just really daft

Thought we were very poor overall yesterday. We were clearly trying to play a better, more intricate and more attractive style of football but we suffered because we had a dearth of creativity, our passing was as bad as I've seen and we were often very slow to see an opportunity. How many times did we pressure them into mistakes only to almost immediately give the ball away? Holgate kept seeing passes that simply didn't exist and he was far from being the only.

Having said that, I'm still fairly relaxed about it. It's the fourth game of the season. Injury and lack of pre-season fitness has forced changes and prevented us blooding new arrivals. A change of footballing culture and tactics plus the introduction of 5 or 6 new faces will take time and we will have failures and successes (just look at us last season or WHU this season).

I'd like nothing better than instant success but I'm quite happy to sit back and see how we develop when the full squad is available and we have a more settled team.

I never mentioned home away or anything else simply capitulating on more than one occasion in a similar scenario .
