Title: Arsenal v Everton
Post by: Shogun on September 19, 2018, 05:00:50 AM
May as well get it over with.

Sunday at 4pm.

They are playing Thursday but it's at home to a random Ukraine side so won't make any difference.

Pickford
Coleman* Mina Zouma Digne
Davies Sigurdsson Gana
Walcott DCL Richarlison

*Probably Kenny

Don't think we'll see much of the ball anyway so won't need Schneiderlin to knock it 5 yards to the man next to him. At least with Sigurdsson in there he might be able to pass forward in a counter.

Don't think I'll be able to cope with these midfield options until January.

3-4-3

Gana and Davies in the middle.

Front three of Richarlison, DCL and Walcott

Try and get that defence outnumbered on the counter.

No point in trying to play any sort of possession based game, playing through the 3rds as we donít have the midfield for it.

Sick of us radically changing formation for big away games only to get embarrassed anyway

Sick of 4-2-3-1 playing players out of position and shoehorning players in though.

In a 3-4-3 everyone is in their favoured position .

I’ll tell you what, it is actually going to be really impressive if silva can get a tune out of this midfield because it clearly is a problem isn’t it, and it’s not just that we haven’t got a sexy little creator in there.

The only person to get any semblance of balance was Sam, and he did that by dropping Rooney deep to look for the ball and then just totally ignore the idea of passing on the midfield and just by passed the middle third with more long balls than anyone else in the league.

Not pretty but I get it.

I’d ideally like a new 6 and a new 8 in January but I know that’s not likely. Gomes I would be very surprised if he’s the answer but he can dribble I believe? So we have a bit of progression there...

I think I’d drop Gana. I think I’d commit to Schneiderlin as the lone 6 and play Davies and Dowell, Davies and Sigurdsson or Davies and Gomes when fit. I think it’s a bitter pill but we have to break some eggs.

4-3-3 with Morgan as the lone, sitting 6. Get him to switch play safely and drop it into the channels like he did for Southampton.

Get Richarlison up top, put Walcott and Bernard on either flank, and put an industrious, aggressive midfield three in the middle. Sit deeper, and try to beat them with pace on the counter. It's achievable, if players cut out the individual errors and if our transition and out-ball to the front three is good enough.

Iíd give DCL a run up top with Richarlison coming off the left as he does so well, Walcott on the right with Bernard playing in the middle with Gana and Davies either side and a back 4 of Dinge at RB if Coleman ent fit, Baines LB, Zuma and Mina. Keeper picks himself unless big Nev feels like a comeback.

Kenny and Holgate if the other two are still broken.
I would hope Walcott will be well up for this.
Bit of pace in there. I think given enough chances, DCL will bag one.
Pray the defence holds up. Maybe not the game for Beni's first outing since injury.
Off the bench at most.

Coleman* Mina* Zouma Digne

---Gana--Sigurdsson--Davies

--Walcott Richarlison Bernard

This Arsenal defence can be got at, just a shame ours is worse and central midfield a problem, dunno what the situation is with schneiderlin if he will play or not, same goes for Mina and Coleman - cant see either starting tbh, so likely still Holgate and Kenny

Tosun was playing pretty well until Richarlison got suspended and itís not like the other two donít get chances off the wing.

I've got a feeling Richarlison would be a nightmare striker to play against. Can come short, go in behind, can carry the ball, can beat men 1v1 and has the strength to hold it, lay it off and win fouls.

Not really expecting a result myself but more hoping for a plan - how are we going to set up against big sides away?

They don’t look unbeatable at all like, and I honestly wouldn’t put it past us to look alright here (before a milquetoast display against Southampton) but it would be wrong to expect a result here really given our history and current squad issues.

I’ve been saying lash mina in all week but it’s probably not ideal to just drop him into a struggling defence away to arsenal up against laca and auba, if it happens I’d be OK with it but it is a bit sink or swim.

He’s ublikely to drop Gylfi despite the clamour from certain subsections of the fan base, and we’re not sure if he can even play CM so I’d imagine he’ll be off the striker again.

The talk of richarlison up front feels a bit footy manager to me, and his performances in England up top have been poor apparently. I believe he wasn’t great in his sub appearance for brazil up top, v USA was it?

I’d keep him wide left where he is a fantastic player, and although I’d say dcl up top I think Marco will stick with the big man.

Wide right is my man off the list Walcott, don’t expect him to be here next year so enjoy him while you can if you like him.

And in cm it’s almost certainly the reheated leftovers of Morgan Schneiderlin and the empty space where Idrissa Gana Gueye should have been while arsenal break up the pitch.

However - I do think and hope he will go compact, and look to break into space with balls over mustafi and mert’, and I think that’ll be quite effective.

Think we'll get chances, don't think Silva sets up to defend or sit in any game, I think we'll have a few strange results this season- wouldn't be overly surprised if we took a point here with a score draw. Capable of going there and winning, but highly unlikely with our defence

Richarlison played centre-forward vs El Salvador and won a pen and scored twice.

El Salvador like. Great finishes, no question about it, but you know. El Salvador innit.

I’m sure I’ve seen that when Marco played him through the middle for Watford his performances got worse.

Not entirely sure Bernard has ever played as a 10 despite looking like one, although you see people saying it a lot. I tried to press Paul Riley on it (can bernard be our open chance creator?) on twitter and although he responded, he didn’t answer really. No data available for
Ukraine from what I’ve seen either - he seems to have an awful lot of assists though.

I'm sadistically looking forward to this. Allowing myself to think that this will be the one where we click and set off on a run of results that strikes fear into the rest of the league, while knowing full well that we'll be lucky to lose to these by less than 3 goals. The contrary joys of being a blue.

I'm in favour of keeping Cenk up top, I've convinced myself he really is an instinctive goalscorer and it will happen. Not sure when total faith turns to total rejection but it probably isn't far away.

Just have a feeling these are open enough for us to do something unexpected and that, with Silva getting close to having his preferred 11 fit, we will surprise them. Words to be dined upon late Sunday afternoon.

Much rather see Richarlison given a go up top.

I like Tosun like and he is much better than what he is showing but his head is clearly not in it at the moment.

Give Bernard a decent run now to see what he can do, get him up to speed with this league.

Can't see this actually happening but it would be nice to see change to try and bounce back after that horror show last week.

As long as we score 3 or 4, then fine. But yes, possibly, possibly not - obviously its got a softish centre, but we are conceding bucketfulls anyway with often 2 defensive midfielders. Maybe with a bit more control we may actually be better defensively. But against tougher sides, maybe be brave enough to drop Sigurdsson for Gueye or Schneiderlin, or maybe even play them both ahead of Gomes and Sig.

Such as:

Pickford

Zouma ---------- Mina
Kenny (SC) ------------------------------------- Digne

IG or MS ---------- Gomes

Bernard or GS

Walcott ------------------------------ Richarlison
DCL

Having more threat really adds to your defensive ability, as other teams dont risk (as much) getting forward, for fear of not being able to get back and stop the likes of a Walcott, Bernard, Richarlison combo on the break. And better footballers lose the ball less, so there is a case for only having one defensive/fairly defensive central mid as opposed to two or three.

I'm hoping for significant improvement from the team tomorrow. Silva's had 4 of the new signings in full training for a week. Bernard should be getting up to speed. He just needs some premier game time. He will be a revelation to a lot of blues, if he plays anywhere near his best. Mina, nobody knows how he's going to settle in. He looked great for Columbia but this will be the acid test. I'm not sure if he'll start, but I would think he will be given minutes from the bench. Zouma was poor last week but so was the whole team, so improvement from him and Holgate, if they start, is essential. I would leave Holgate on the bench and start Mina, but that may be too much, too soon. If Richarlison returns in his original form "we have a chance here". But I say that every year. ::)

If we can win the midfield and bridge that gap we've got a chance... Who's gonna be the key player though? Davies? Geye? Schneiderlin isn't tough enough I don't think.

We're not though. So it's over before it even begins...

I'll be Surprised if we only allow 3.

Be tempted to play Davies no idea why

Because what we've offered instead of him isn't working? And he tries to move it forward.

I'm tempted to go with dowell. It's a win win. We lose and he doesn't perform and it's fine cause we were expected to lose. But if he does perform against this soft arsenal side.......

To re-create the midfield that offers nothing going forward and the same defending would be interesting.

Davies has to play and one of the midfield three dropped.

Iíd get him in for Morgan, have Gana holding, Davies and Sigurdsson infront and look for Walcott and Richarlison on the counter.

..........got to admire your optimism mate .We haven't won there since 1996 and our luck has to change sometime. I'm banking on Richarlison to have a blinder ,think we'll score a couple but it's the defence that worries me.

Hope we get our head's screwed back on today and get something going for us.

Title: Re: Arsenal v Everton
Post by: Zoolander on September 23, 2018, 08:17:02 PM
Think weíll need Gana here, but he needs to sit a little deeper and protect the back four. Iíd most like to see Davies in for Morgan, purely for his energy. Heíll help out more at the back but can also bring it forward.
Itís up front where Iím at a loss though.
Tosun? Richarlison? DCL?
Richarlison plays 100%, just a case of where? Sig should also play but then I also want to see Bernard. Especially against these, where we may be playing on the break.
Itís not easy but Iíd probably push Richarlison up and pop Bernard on the left.
All in all, we need 3 at the back to make the best of our midfield and attacking options, but after recent weeks going three at the back against Arsenal would be suicide.

We've only not won there because we're a bunch of pussies and have been for a long time. Plenty of teams worse than us have won there.

If the players actually believe they can win, and play like that, of course we can beat them. All in the head.

The key is...give him a run of games at his actual position (in a non-shit system), see what happens.  We all KNOW he has rough edges, the question is can he work through them, gain confidence and break through.

Individual cock-ups at the very start of said run are not determinative in the least.  You are missing the point of the exercise.

It's a shame as we've played well. Pressed pretty well.

Genuinely, I think if you needed more evidence on top of his long run in the side last season that DCL isn't the answer then I think this is another good example of it. He's not ready. Take that first chance and it could've been a whole different game. Not saying Tosun is the solution but we might need to get creative in how we use our front three. Maybe Walcott could be used centrally or Richarlison with Bernard coming in. Dunno.

We lack a strong spine. Not a spine in terms of what Caragher said before the game, a spine as in a commanding centre half, a dictating DM and a striker with quality.

Fullbacks and wide men are great. Kenny is showing improvements as well.

Still a work in progress.

It's hard to have to come away with no points again.

There have been positives this season, but I hope we get a slice of luck soon because we need a bit to get up and running. It's felt like red cards, injuries, suspensions, and particularly bad decisions have really conspired to really give us a crap start to the season.

The West Ham game was really the only outlier for me in terms of we fully deserved to lose that as we played terribly.

That said, there are clearly things that need to be worked on. Presumably we'll see Mina and Gomes soon. We have to think creatively about our attacking unit too as to who plays centrally. Not DCL please. Not Tosun unless he can gain some form.

Our problem today was the same as last week, we can't finish good chances, the performance this week was much improved, their goalkeeper was mom. Arsenal have spent over £100m on their two strikers one who scored legally and one who didn't, our striker came through our reserves and our other cost £27m and is in a drought. Play like that and we'll win far more than we'll lose.

Steer clear of twitter, seriously, the flappers have gone mental

It's ridiculous, Martinez got a free pass till it was nearly too late cos of one good season using Moyes foundations, Moyes himself got 11 years when he could have easily been booted after the second yet some want Silva gone after 7 games with an as yet fully fit squad and 3 games in which decisions have gone against us

Personally think a loan move would be terrible for us, all that would happen is he'd go off, not score somewhere else, then come back

And thatís when heíd be put on the transfer list, isnít it?

I agree Lxxx. That was a much better performance than recent games, nowhere near inept. Arsenal's second was clearly offside and we had chances ourselves.
Although I agree I don't think we can ignore that we played a really poor aesenal team. Worst in years imo.

We aren't good enough yet to out-football the footballing teams, and we're still weak with dealing with the physical teams, so yes this season will be a bit of nothing, but at least we're making steps the right way

The alternative was stick with Sam or similar (Dyche), fuck off all notion of ever competing with the top 6 and play try to win the 7th placed challenge at best forever more with physical shit 'football'

My worry is the next three games coming up, Arsenal are always going to give you opportunities because the way they are setup and openly play, reason why we did well in the first half. Fulham and Palace on the other hand will be setup differently, won't allow us to play that way, as probably will Leicester.

Big few weeks coming up.

They had two of the most prolific strikers in Europe in recent years up top. Things like that matter in tight games. We might be trying to make progress but it's a massive leap to the next level.

Yea either one of them played for us today and we probably win the game.

I think Zouma was quite poor. He reminds me of Mori, a disaster waiting to happen. Keane was brilliant and hopefully Mina would be as good as we are hoping him to be. Also though Kenny is quite good defensively he doesn't really add anything up front. Having Coleman back would help build some good attacks from the other side too.

Need to bin both DCL and Tosun and start Richarlison up front with Bernard and Theo supporting him as front 3. The middle 3 are fine and I expect Siggy to do better against poorer sides compared to Arsenal.

We played good against a decent Arsenal side (it's much better than last few years under Wenger) who have been in decent form. Need to take whatever positives we have from the match and grow.

Add in the fact silva has no idea how to keep a clean sheet and these 3 games don't look very winnable at all.

This season is going to be a struggle. Games like today we miss a quality finisher. Games like west ham we miss a quality mid fielder and a physical presence.

Every game is going to introduce a new struggle for us as we're just not that good. We're not even the best of the rest anymore.

We played well and all that. And we defo did. We were really well set up. For the vast majority of the team, it was well executed.

But yet again. Yet fucking again, we didn't get it over the line. And it's not good enough. Failure and 'nearly but not quite' runs right through this club from top to bottom, and it's really not good enough. The number of times we won the ball off their defence, and had chances to kill them high up the pitch was incredible. They looked baffled and clueless.

Unfortunately we played like we thought 'these chances will keep coming', which again, isn't good enough at this level.

So tired of following this club, and so tired of being disappointed with them. All the changes of manager and players and it's the same shit over and over again. It's not today's result. Obviously people lose away at Arsenal. It's the manner of it, and the repetition of the same shit year after year.

Maybe I'm just not cut out for this stuff, and other people are more resilient and have a stronger constitution than me, but I'm not sure I've got it in me to keep taking it. I know we've had it much much worse than this, and I went through all of that too but it's the cumulative effect. Might just sack it off, and keep a general eye on things from afar now.

Totally get that. It's an absolute chore supporting us go nowhere. However, my expectations this season are:

- 7th-9th in the league
- Strong in the cup competitions
- Competitive in matches versus top 6
- Attractive Football

The way the league is set up, whether you're 7th or 12th is largely irrelevant in this league excluding the possibility of European football in June. Our hope of genuine happiness this season will come in the cups and it's yet to be seen how that will go. Today was miles better than last season against Arsenal (home or) away and that was because we created chances and looked really good for about 55 minutes playing the sort of football you need to if you're going to be a top 6 side.

As I see it, we're on track in what is a low expectation season. It's horrible to say but that is the best we can hope for this season as we are in transition, on and off the pitch. We need Brands and Silva to sort the squad out over the next two windows and next season is when something has to change because to be honest, I don't know what direction we go in if this doesn't work out.

That's the problem, Rambo. And this is garbage Arsenal. When they get good again, it'll be back to 4-0/5-0 territory.

I remember the Martinez Arsenal away, when we should've won. Barkley hit that shot that whistled a yard wide of the top corner, and even that game, which we remember taking the piss out of them, was only 0-0. We're a club of failures. Our success is too far in the past to still mean anything.

There are so many positives out of that performance. Defensively we barely put a foot wrong, with Keane looking a different player from last season. Our pressing game has improved dramatically and whenever Richarlison is on the pitch, we can beat anyone. Possession wise we are much better as well, with the passing generally more creative and sharper than in the past 2 seasons.

So much to be positive about, and as long as we get the results to stay top half, I will be happy with this season and a bit of stability.

Agree with a lot of that, like BD  I had a rant at the tv when they scored, unjustly I thought. But that display with Lukaku playing up front for us and we'd have won comfortably. So frustrating watching us today, in so many good positions to score. I swear one goal and we'd have beat them today.

It's hardest to support a team during periods like right now were we are almost certain to finish outside Europe and not win a cup. Iíve been pretty disappointed or perhaps disillusioned would be a better word these last few years supporting Everton. My biggest positive in recent years was actually this past transfer window though. A lot of which weíve yet to see the benefits of, but most of all because there was a plan and we are trying to address every area of the pitch. It gives me hope that there is a bigger plan on the works, an attempt to create a side that hasnít really been undertaken since Moyesís days.

So the start of the season has been kinda poor, but I do see promise in a lot more players than I did last season. I hope they do gel when all these signings are finally assembled and we can build on that into next season.

Definitely are going to need a striker next time out but Iím sure Brands is aware of that because he seemed to address most of the bigger issues we were complaining about for the last few years.

Yes?

Too many poor passes, too slow decision making wise, lost a lot of good posiitinnal play from him. Seemed ineffective off the ball.

Best spelling of posiitiinnal I've ever seen. It works as well. ;D

He might be a dozy bastard that he didnít flag it but donít think anyone would be stupid enough to make that gesture live on tv and in front of a 50,000 crowd, Kopite type conspiracy theory this.

It's very possible the punching the air gesture is one of disappointment. As by then he'll have seen the goal on the big screen. Don't want to be labelled Kopites do we? :)

Yeah, either that, or he actually thinks he got it right, so was celebrating that.

However, Kopites do this cringey shit, but guess what, it works.

All their moaning and petitions and campaigns get in the minds of officials and pundits, and they seem to get more decisions going their way these days than in the 80ís.

When was the last time they were on the wrong end of a blatantly dodgy offside decision or a soft pen against?

Whatever the reason punching the air after you've made a horrendous error isn't what you want to see in your officials though is it.

I do have sympathy with the shout that complaining is Kopite behaviour. It is, it's big club behaviour. It's why big clubs get close decisions, why referees are scared of upsetting their managers, why ex-players populate the punditry on all channels to discuss their games and the decisions in them, why the mentality of the players who play for these clubs is stronger and a cut above the rest.

If we want to aspire to join the elite then we need to act like the new upstart on the block and change both on and off the pitch and put noses out of joint otherwise we'll still be little old Everton who get hit with retrospective bans for players diving or probably FA charges for tapping up managers. Likewise horrendous decisions going against us when we play the bigger clubs because we'll just take it.

Not one of our players goes and challenges him or the ref.

The only reaction comes from Keane and that was half hearted. Obviously weíd shot ourselves in the foot but youíve still got to put them under pressure every other team does.

Only have to look at the reaction to the ball hitting Kennyís hand from one yard away. About five of them running towards the ref screamingly for a penalty.

Yes mate, it does work. There's no doubt about that. If that's what people want? By all means, carry on. I'm not going to get wound up about it, as the club is about to take on wholesale changes anyway. Some of what we believe we are, isn't for refurbishment, or change. I will have enjoyed Everton very much so up till now, despite all the ups and downs. If I like the way things change? I'll continue to do just that. So, whilst I agree, I also believe we're quite different to most other clubs and supporters in this country.  :)

all this linesman stuff is a deflection from the simple facts....
we lost again....
we're in a bit of a free fall down the league...
our defensive errors are chasms...
our midfield is not good enough....
we haven't got a leader on the field...
we need a striker who can score goals....

oh and why do we buy/loan in injured players......who cant play for months ?

this isn't something new...it's been going on since Martinez first season in charge...

The linesman stuff is bang on the money ...he was fucking shocking aside the fist bump.
We lost to a great strike by Lacazete .
we had way more chances than Arsenal at their ground too (can't remember the last time that happened)can you?
Davies although young put in a fuck of a shift as captain. ..i agree we need more voices.
Yes we need a striker but the window is shut what ya gonna do?we still have options Walcott ,Richarlson (Tosun just needs a goal )
Our squad ran for 90 minutes again yesterday ...something RK  or RM could get them to do all season let alone six games in .

But I guess it's all how full or empty your glass is ....mine is fuller than a good few seasons has seen .. .and it will be brimmed soon enough .
