Title: Everton V Norwich.
Post by: pjk on November 20, 2012, 08:15:17 PM
With Norwich being in good form and Everton gifting points to our opposition all over the place, I havn't got a clue how we will do this weekend. I have to admit the confidence is starting to weaken. Lets hope we can get back onto some sort of level footing. I don't think this weekends game is going to be any pushover.

Well, we'll have to play it on the deck far more as Fellaini's no playing. A change in our style has often yielded promising returns.

Lets hope Mirallas is fit. Scoring three is not beyond us by any means as I'm sure, we are all well aware of. We have a problem with Howard Jonny and Seamus. They all need to tighten up. Am not sure whats happening with Distin? (he wasn't even in the squad last week)

I think Mirallas will likely be fit enough for the bench at least, Gibson must be ready to start having played 63 minutes for the u21s

They have 3 clean sheets in a row and have had a solid defence recently, we cant put away our chances fellaini is banned and mirallas looks like he'll be out, 0-0 or 0-1. hate games like this where people expect us to win, i hope barkley starts.

This is spot on, people expecting us to win, Norwich aren't no pushovers and with the midfield weakened this won't be easy, it'll either be 1-1 draw where they take the lead early on and we keep knocking on the door with a very very late equaliser or I can see a 1-0 defeat/1-0 win, don't expect too many goals.

They won't be no push over but lets be honest if we can't beat Norwich at GP do we really deserve to be in any European comp next year? I feel that if we loose here top 6 could be a problem, we still haven't played man city, Chelsea, arsenal or spurs yet also trips to man u and l,pool to come. Going to be tough.

There's an article with Naismith about Seamus in the echo; it says Hibbo still out to Seamus to continue.

Also as has been said; Distin and Hibbo haven't been in so that tweet is more than questionable!

Lots of actual cover for our back four for once, still some decent creativity, I think this squad could get it done!

He`s a tough lad and I don`t think anyone wants Heitinga or Jags there. I couldn`t even imagine how slow our defence would be with Heitinga and Duffy in the middle.

Moyes was quoted as saying before that it won't be long before Gibson gets back to full fitness, so obviously not in contention for a place in the XI tomorrow. Anichebe, Hibbert and Distin haven't really featured of late anyway, and as for Neville- him not being in the side is what half of you have been screaming out for anyway.

Who else do we have at RB should all those mentioned be injured??

oviedo i would prefer  rather than making two problems from one and changing both the centre defence and rightback. especially with the strongest centre defender (jags) being moved. surely it is better to keep the first choice cb's togeher. But let hope coleman is ok.

Yeah but outside of the starters in midfield we've also got Barkley and Gueye on the bench who can cover.  Defensively we've only got Duffy, and we're already playing a CB at full back so having a full back on the bench makes some sense.

Yeah there is logic there if he isn't at risk of aggravating his injury, I can't imagine a scenario where bringing him on would be of massive benefit though aside from if we are 4-0 up and wanting to give him game time.

Marouane Fellaini is not available for Everton today through suspension, but manager David Moyes does not think his team need to change their style. He said: "I don't think we need to plan any differently. The team's been playing very well, I know they're in a good rhythm.

"Obviously Felli's been an integral part of that so we'll miss him but we'll try to find a way of winning with the players we have available."

Norwich winger Robert Snodgrass thinks the Canaries can continue to climb the table. He said: "We see West Brom and the way they have started this year and we think, 'why can't that be us?'

"If we put a run together we can go up that table. We have the players to do it."

Everton v Norwich (1500 GMT)

David Moyes makes two changes to the Everton side which were beaten at Reading last weekend. Bryan Oviedo makes his full Premier League debut, and Sylvain Distin is also back in. The banned Marouane Fellaini and Seamus Coleman miss out.

Norwich make one change from the team which beat Manchester United, as Ryan Bennett replaces Michael Turner at centre-half.

Yeah there is logic there if he isn't at risk of aggravating his injury, I can't imagine a scenario where bringing him on would be of massive benefit though aside from if we are 4-0 up and wanting to give him game time.

It would most likely only be if we pick up more injuries in the game.  With the 7 man substitute bench of today you're always going to have players on it who are highly unlikely to get on - you still fill the places though!

Will be good to see Oviedo get some game time although he will likely disrupt the Bainaar connection. Also think it will be interesting if Jela and Naisy can link up like they used to.

It's the kind of game that you'd want to give Oviedo for his full debut really.  At home against a team who despite their decent current run, you'd still expect us to outplay.

We need a change, hopefully we'll play well. There's a lot of football in that side, and actually without Fellaini, we'll be forced to keep it on the ground more, which has seen us very effective.

Everytime we get a freekick they cut off our short options, forcing us to play it long as they are winning everything.  Jelavic is just fighting for nothing balls.

Thankfully Bassong can't head the ball. Other than that and the Holt effort we haven't really given them much.

I think people seem to be forgetting who's out for us? For a patched up team, we've played alright and if we keep doing that we'll get a result. We're lacking a bit on the left without the Pienaar and Baines combo, although Oviedo has looked good when he's got the ball. The right has pretty much nothing coming down it but that's no surprise as we've got our 4th choice RB playing.

First half summation

Naismith may have scored but he's a poor player who brings nothing to the game
Hitzelsperger gives the ball away too often
Oviedo. The brightest spot in the afternoon.
Osman. Well, its another of those performances that we are all getting used to, shite. No doubt his fans will be on defending him
Jelavic. Is he playing?

Osman and hitzl are sucking defensively. Luckily, other than distin's one cockup that holt squandered, he, heitinga and jags have been good at the back.

I can't recall before when you could say Pienaars "heart wasn't it", even while carry injuries or like before he left us he always gives/ gave 100%. He's just out of form and carrying an injury, maybe 2 today after that tackle in the first 10 minutes. Give the fella a break.

I doubt it unless Pienaar is injured. I think Moyes is hoping Pienaar plays his way back into form.
Title: Re: Everton V Norwich.
Post by: Ross on November 24, 2012, 10:04:39 PM
What?

He's playing central, where Barkley plays, he's carrying at least 1 injury into the game, maybe 2 after the first 10 minutes and he's not on form. What's so controversial about it, given our wafer thin bench?

Feel crestfallen. We were really flying early in the season, but we've been quite poor for over a month now. We simply can't win games. I think any pretensions of top 4 need to be set aside for now. We simply aren't good enough.

Poor refereeing hardly helped. Even when his decisions were correct, he was absolutely unable to communicate effectively. The amount of times nobody knew what was going on was crazy. No PL referee should be that bad at managing a game.

Baines and Oviedo were the only positives for me.

Howard was at fault for the goal, but the whole second half performance was below par and the fact that the goal came from his error shouldn't detract from how poor we were.  I don't know what on earth our problem is, but the inability to maintain a performance after half time is really worrying.

Unfortunately yes, it brings back memories of that Spurs game where he got soundly booed.

I really think Barkley could have done more than Naismith (even just energy wise) in the last 20 mins. Gotta show some faith in these players.

I'm struggling with how subbing Vellios on when we were 1-0 up was an obvious move.  Sure, Jelavic was having a poor game, but Vellios at the moment is not going to hold the ball up and help us get a foothold on the game either.

Possibly Barkley on was worth looking at because the issue was that yet again we got overrun in midfield second half, but moaning that Vellios didn't come on and then did when we were chasing a goal misses the point for me.

yeah it was so inevitable

oviedo was a good aspect in this game.

heitinga  was very terrible... what was he doing fouling so much near to the box, he made a mistake with almost every tackle today. he did do a goal saving clearance, but it was made from his own mistake. i have no confidence with him.

jagielka tried hard but he needs to be in his real position desperately for next match.

luckily fellaini returns for the next match, and maybe a few others.

Title: Re: Everton V Norwich.
Post by: Risky on November 24, 2012, 11:29:50 PM
I thought Vellios would have been the natural replacement for Naismith, as it would have given us more of a focus up front to aim at and therefore push them back a bit

Norwich deserved their goal, but the threat (and goal) could easily have been quashed if we'd been able to push forward more ourselves

Fair point about putting Vellios on for Naismith (as opposed to Jelavic who I mentioned in my post above).  I don't think that would have been a bad move especially, I don't think it would have helped us particularly either though.

Oviedo was very impressive, and I didn't like the fact that he got moved to the right second half.  Although he did ok there, he's clearly not as effective there as on the left and I didn't think it was a move that needed to be made.

Title: Re: Everton V Norwich.
Post by: Risky on November 24, 2012, 11:32:31 PM
the thing is, if they'd still scored after putting Vellios on, he'd have been more up to speed with the game and more likely to grab a goal

putting him on in the 91st minute when we know there's only 3 more to go is pointless - even with his reputation for scoring incredibly quickly!

I agree that sticking him on in injury time is never likely to work, but the timing of the goal saw to that to a large extent.  You can be sure that if he put him on at 1-0 up only for them to equalise then there'd be shouts along the lines of "why put a striker on when you need to see out the game" though!
Title: Re: Everton V Norwich.
Post by: cantoffee on November 24, 2012, 11:34:29 PM
We looked exhausted out there, and Naismith was clearly run ragged and needed to be subbed off.

Blame can be placed in a few areas today though, the ref was garbage, Heitinga looked poor, Howard should have come for the ball, Naismith should have put Jelavic through, Moyes with his non-subs, and the generally shitness of our overall play in the second half.

As some have said though, bright spots in Oviedo who looked a real player, and Baines who was a one man show at times.

Need some players back for Arsenal, but it's only 3 days away and other than Fellaini being back I can't imagine those three days will be enough for our injured group.

there would be yeah, but everyone could see them scoring in the second half and most of the people who would have shouted that would have it pointed out to them that they're the same people who yell at Moyes to be more attacking!

Moyes just didn't want to make a change at all today, you could see it

Yeah he was clearly banking on us hanging on for those last few minutes, and to be fair if it hadn't been for a terrible refereeing decision then we most likely would have done.  I can see why people were crying out for changes to be made though, as a goal for them was hardly something that wasn't likely to come.

His post match comments might be interesting.

Howard is fucking awful, fuck off everyone who thinks he isnt, the amount of mistakes he has made this year is fucking pathetic, absolute fucking shite, he has no competition and isnt even trying hard the fucking tourettes ridden cunt.

Dont care how bad a player is doing, you cant write that shit, especially not about an Everton player. Bang out of order mate.

So Moyes did realise that it was coming

Everton manager David Moyes was unhappy with the decision that led to Norwich's equaliser: "I thought Steve Morison mis-kicked the ball in front of us and I don't think it was a free-kick. It was a tough game but we should have seen it out and I am disappointed we didn't. We had the opportunities to make it 2-0 but Norwich were always knocking on the door

I missed that, but yea that's out of order.

Criticising players is one thing, but abuse of that kind is unwelcome.

I thought Vellios would have been the natural replacement for Naismith, as it would have given us more of a focus up front to aim at and therefore push them back a bit

Norwich deserved their goal, but the threat (and goal) could easily have been quashed if we'd been able to push forward more ourselves

Yes you are probably right regarding Vellios. Either way I think we'd have benefitted from a change. Jelavic was poor, but boy he was one guy against five or six at times, he desperately needed some help.

Can't believe people criticising Moyes for not bringing Vellios on earlier. Have you seen this guy play? He is dire. Think Moyes took the view that 1-0 was a result and his hand was forced when howard made his inevitable howler. Maybe he should have subbed him

Let's be honest, none of our players would get in the Accrington Stanley team, I think well be relegated every season for the next two or three years.

My problem is nothing to do with Vellios its to do with a lack of substitution when you could see that the players were leggy and Norwich were going to get a goal.  He could have used a couple of subs to disrupt Norwich's momentum and the likes of Barkley, Vellios and Kennedy could have been told to chase and harry for the last 10 mins - something the rest of them were too tired to do.

Um... perhaps because Naismith was playing poorly and looked absolutely shattered.

So was Jelavic, Vellios for Jelavic is a much more viable substitution.

I still don't understand the argument that Fellaini neutralises him, he played the same way today as he has most of the season.

We just don't know exactly how good Jelavic is, and if this is a poor run of form or his actual level. Either way, other than a few decent passages of link of play I thought he was pretty bad today.

Pace isn't a big part of his game and that was what seemed to be required; Jelavic needs some good football played around him and he will get on the end of things

We are crying out for a pacy striker who can be brought on in these situations that can just run at defences

I might have given Kennedy a go for that reason, although its a big risk bringing on a young player in a 1-0 which is probably why that didn't happen

Get a grip.  Spurs and Arsenal aren't as great as some people think and we'll give both of them a game at Goodison. City has always been a good hunting ground for us as well. I am more confident about these three than the previous.

The next three games are very important for us to regain some kind of momentum.  Getting points from any of the three games is doable, despite our recent run of results.

Have people turned on Jelavic so quickly, he was Christ reborn last season the way peopel talked.. He has still scored 4 goals this season, was amazing last. And lay of off naismith, he has 3 fucking goals, maybe his overall play could be better, but at least he is scoring, something no one else can do at the moment.

Phil Neville saying focus on the positives etc on Twitter now as well... Imagine if they actually won something... hopes and expectations would be through the roof for every match and when they don't deliver they'd get 10 times as much stick.

Obviously some fans are fucking thick and take it too far re: Coleman abuse, but they're elite athletes and world class footballers once you've set a standard you're expected to match and surpass that the next match etc if they can't do that and make stupid mistakes and play shit football there can't be excuses for individual and team performances they've just got to step up.    Funny how Nev that this time last season he feared relegation!  Well fucking fear it again or how about not getting into Europe, because if they don't then Fellaini, Baines, Jags, Heitinga could all be off along with Moyes.

He was awful and will be getting my lowest score if the match ratings are ever done. Despite how rubbish howard was for the goal and heitinga was in the second half at least they did something positive at times during the game- Jelavic was dire throughout.

On Jelavic being isolated seems Pienaar was having to drop deeper and deeper because Hitz and Osman offered nothing defensively in the second half. We desperately need Gibson back and/or Fellaini in there.

Without our two Belgians, who are arguably among our best footballers, we started well.
Encouraging was that our goal came from new boys.
A nice deep ball from Hitz to Oviedo, who did well to produce a perfect cross for Naismith to bury.
If only more were to follow.

Like last week our inability to score more, whilst being the far better side, would come back to haunt us.
We were not as good in the second half again, and it got nervous when Norwich had some very decent chances.
Their goal was another blow to the head, especially when it came from a gifted free kick.

Dropping five good points in two weeks may come back to haunt us.
It's surprising to still see us fifth in the table.
