VfL Wolfsburg v Everton FC
Volkswagen Arena
Thursday 26th November 18:00
Europa League Group Match #5

Wolfsburg - Last 5 Matches

Wolfsburg 4-1 Heidenheim - DFB Pokal (Caligiuri, Dost, Gustavo x2)
Stuttgart 0-4 Wolfsburg (Perisic x2, Knoche, De Bruyne)
Wolfsburg 5-1 Krasnodar - Europa League (Hunt x2, Guilavogui, Bendtner (pen) x2)
Wolfsburg 2-0 Hamburg (Olic, Hunt)
Schalke 3-2 Wolfsburg (Olic, Bendtner)

Everton - Last 5 Matches

Burnley 1-3 Everton (Eto'o x2, Lukaku)
Everton 0-0 Swansea
Everton 3-0 Lille - Europa League (Osman, Jagielka, Naismith)
Sunderland 1-1 Everton (Baines Pen)
Everton 2-1 West Ham (Lukaku, Osman)

Wolfsburg

A win for Wolfsburg would see them two points in front of Everton and qualified from the group with a trip away to Lille remainig. Wolfsburg would also qualify with a draw if Lille failed to beat Krasnodar in Russia. A defeat would see Wolfsburg unable to win the group having dropped four points behind Everton. Wolfsburg are currently 2nd place in the league and are unbeaten at home (Bundesliga and Europa League) this season (W6 D2). Wolfsburg average three goals a game in the league, scoring on average twice a match.

Possible Line ups

(http://i.picresize.com/images/2014/11/26/yunIE.png) (http://i.picresize.com/images/2014/11/26/rR6n1.png)

Everton

Everton have the opportunity to progress to the knock-out stages with all three possible outcomes to the result. If Everton avoid defeat then they will qualify with a game to spare and a win would secure Everton's place at the top the group. Should Everton lose then they will qualify if Lille draw in Krasnodar. The blues have conceded just two goals in the competition so far and apart of the 12 teams unbeaten in the group stages so far. Everton have lost just one of their eight away matches (Premier League and Europa League) this season (W2 D5).

Stats and Injuries

Wolfsburg -

Everton - Leighton Baines, Gareth Barry, Darron Gibson, Steven Naismith and Bryan Oviedo have all been left out of the squad.

Be content with a draw from this one really considering the arse slapping we gave them a few weeks ago and our injury situation.

If it's a choice between Hibbert or Garbutt for this one though Id like to see the young kid his time, seems like a pretty good chance to give the lad a chance that really shouldn't make to much difference to how we end the group.

And fully expect us to play for one - especially with the players we have fit.
Would be very happy if we shape up for counter attacks

Not sure what to make of this game. Will be really tough, goes without saying, but is definitely winnable if we get it right.

A point will do at this stage but I hope we attack and play to win it from the outset. Would love to finish top of the group.

If they line up professionally and hold the line then go for a sneaky win, which is what I imagine they will be doing,  they will win, if they come out all guns blazing we will pick them off on the counter and score 3 or 4, cant see us winning this at all, would take a 0-0 bore fest right now.

Win here I reckon, draw at the very least.

They've picked up domestically since playing us but the German league looks a lot like ours at the minute, all over the place.

Gonna be stuck in the car driving north for this one. I thought it was an 8pm kickoff so leaving London at 4 would get me home some time through the first half, terrible planning!

Anybody know what (national) radio stations will do live commentary of this?

We're not so attacking and adventurous in the away games. A point would do, but It would spoil it a bit for me if we didn't score one or two, as we're on the tele like. I may be wrong, but this could be our toughest game of the lot. Most said that about Lille home and away though. 6 hours 3 minute to kick off. :)

No it's not he's a perfectly competent defender and has proved that in every game he's played this season apart from Swansea away - his first game in over a year
Title: Re: Wolfsburg v Everton
Post by: pjk on November 27, 2014, 06:29:17 PM
No one can blame Roberto in his choice of players. The best left back in Europe and a very able understudy in Oviedo not available for the game leaves Browning or Hibbo. He's third choice, or is it fourth? Hibbo's having a good season up till now. Putting him in at left back is like playing McCarthy as a striker.

They are missing a major player in Ricardo Rodriguez, he both scores and provides alot of opportunities for them and that should make it slightly easier for us. With that being said, De Bruyne has been playing out of his skin lately and we'll need to mark him properly if we are going to stop them scoring.

Is Rodriguez injured or something?

I only left him out because I read on a google translated forum that there'd be changes and he'd be one of them.

Could have been the Wolfsburg equivalent of Shogun though and he's awful at predicting teams.

OptaFranz 38 - Wolfsburg's Kevin de Bruyne is the player to have a hand in most shots in this EL season: 38 (20 shots, 18 chances created). Eager.

Think you guys are over-emphasising Wolfsburg's quality here. I see it as an evenly matched game, with them as slight favourites as they're at home. i would take a draw given our position in the group, however.

I still don't buy that the 4-1 at Goodison flattered us. We cut them open repeatedly. They had 20 or so shots all from 25 yards with about 6 of our players in the way.

Totally agree with this.

We created chances and took them, they created nothing so reverted to pinging it out of desperation.

On a normal day I think we'd have maybe won 2-1 as it's not often we are so clinical in front of goal but we were well worth the win.

Don't disagree with you Tinga, would much rather give Garbutt a go, but I feel like it's too much too soon for him. Hibbo was like a centre half on Saturday with the aerial threat from WH, and away to Wolfsburg probably isn't the easiest game to bed in to. I want to see Garbutt play, just not watch him get his confidence shot straight from the off...

Well I got 10/11.

Surprised to see Vieirinha playing at right back. he usually plays in one of the three behind a striker.

Malanda and Gustavo is a fairly meaty defensive midfield pairing. Be nice for Perisic to meet his future team-mates.

SKY

WOLFSBURG 0-1 EVERTON (Lukaku, 42)

Wow! Wolfsburg are all over Everton like a green rash (colour of their kit) and they are causing more problems with another corner. But the ball's deflected away, Mirallas flicks the ball smartly to Lukaku who bursts through, he mis-controls the ball, it looks like he's wasted the chance but still his power and strength and speed gets him away clean through and he calmly slots in. For a definition of classic counter-attack, watch a replay of that goal.

Besic showing real promise.

Not only was this fixture arguably the toughest on paper, but we were playing pretty much the 2nd best team in Germany. Wolfsburg may have dominated and they may have had a bit of bad luck, but we dealt with them very well and the pass for our second goal in particular was excellent.

Given our injury situation, I hope in the Krasnodar game, Martinez gives many of the first team players a rest and tries a few of the youngsters including Browning, Garbutt, Galloway plus Atsu, Kone and maybe Robles can get some game time.

WOLFSBURG 0-2 EVERTON (Mirallas, 74)
WOW! What a strike. Counter-attack part ii. Brilliant. Brutal stuff from Everton. Lukaku dazzles on the halfway line with a couple of deft moves from his tricky legs, he produces a cracking reverse pass and Mirallas is through. But there's still plenty of work to do. More twists on the penalty spot, the defender is bamboozled and the ball ends up in the net with a low drive. Stunning.

Exactly this. As well as being typically combative, he took the ball of Howard numerous times, and in some very dangerous positions he took care of the ball with real composure. Loves a little 360 pivot to wrong foot someone.

All thos players you just mentioned there are just over 20-21.

Cant wait to see who we draw :) i have a sneaky feeling the cup is ours this year!

A good, good European away win that.

Shaky first half with a good break and goal, although I've gotta say my heart sank when rom miscontrolled it. thank god he eats one on ones for breakfast.

Grew into it in the second half, so glad to have kev back who is a real danger.

Exactly this. As well as being typically combative, he took the ball of Howard numerous times, and in some very dangerous positions he took care of the ball with real composure. Loves a little 360 pivot to wrong foot someone.

Thought the same thing about that move. He does it all the time - his security blanket

I reckon he'll be quality in a year or so, you can tell what he's trying to do but sometimes he doesn't quite pull it off, when he's caught up to the pace he'll be very good.

He cost Wolfsburg 16 mill. I would think you can add another four onto that at least. Also, he's only been there since January. Would he want to sign for us? I think he would. Kev and Rom need to get to work on him so he can have a word with peresic on the quiet too.

Nah Jim. I think we can afford to get De bruyne without selling Barkley. We just paid 28 for Lukaku. It depends on how much we paid up front for him. There's an extra 30 mill TV money and our wage bill is under control. Why not go for him, as mentioned "if we get into the Champions league"? We could be a possible destination for him.
