Manchester City

Man City won their third match on the run with a comprehensive 4-1 victory away to Sunderland on Wednesday night thanks to a brace from Sergio Aguero for his 14th goal in as many matches in this season's Premier League. Manchester City have now scored in 11 matches in a row which is the highest in the Premier League, Arsenal are next on 7. Manchester City have kept just one clean sheet in their last 17 Premier League matches against Everton, a team they've beaten just 5 times in that period (D2 L8) stretching back to 2006.

Sergio Aguero is currently the top scorer in the Premier League and has scored more goals than Sunderland (13), Burnley (10) and Aston Villa ( 8 ) in the league this season. The Argentinian has also scored seven  goals in his last eight home games for Manchester City, though he did score four goals against Tottenham. According to Opta's stats, Aguero has the best minutes per goal rate in Premier League history (108 minutes) ahead of Thierry Henry (122) and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (128).

Possible Line ups

Everton

Everton failed to improve moods on Merseyside after following up a defeat at White Hart Lane with a 1-1 draw at home to Hull. Everton are one of three teams to score in every Premier League away match this season alongside West Ham United and Saturday's opponents Manchester City. Roberto Martinez has faced Manchester City 10 times in the Premier League and has failed to win any (D1 L9) but did beat them in the 2013 FA Cup Final. Only one defender (Le Saux 44) has produced more Premier League assists than Leighton Baines (43).

Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku each scored in both fixtures between the sides last season. Lukaku has notched four goals in his last seven matches in the Premier League and five of his six goals this season have all come before the 35th minute of the match. Despite being 5 years younger than Aguero, the Belgian is only 5 goals behind the Argentinian counting goals since his loan move to West Brom in the 2012-13 season.

that assist table just reminds me how much we need to get baines on the fucking ball. he's been a bit part player lately because of how we're playing.

I'm looking forward to this.  It will be a good challenge and we're more than capable of getting something, even with the current injuries and poor league form.

Back to basics for me. Higher tempo, quicker passing and defend like our lives are on the line

City  can be a lazy side. They wont press the ball as much as lower sides will. Think we can nick this.

Considering Aguero is seriously hot shit I think it's pretty awesome that Rom aint far behind, stat wise.

It will hopefully suit our style of play this year playing against a team that will attack us rather than soak up the pressure (although, it probably won't as we haven't played very well in the league for a while now)

The team I would pick: Howard, Coleman, Jagielka, Alcaraz, Baines, Besic, Barry, Mirallas, Eto'o, Pienaar, Lukaku.

It was a toss up between Barkley and Eto'o but I think Eto'o will be able to keep hold of possession a bit better than Barkley in this game.

Bit more optimism in the matchday thread. Stranger things have happened with us, I wouldn't put it past us to go and get something here against the run of play. Let's just hope they've watched the Hull game back and think to themselves "fuck me, we need to get our act together..."
Title: Re: Manchester City v Everton
Post by: Audrey Horne on December 05, 2014, 11:51:40 PM
was thinking it will be like Wolfsburg where we sit back and hit counter attacks. Without the energy of McCarthy and Naismith we aare slow when we kep the ball so this will suit us i think and we will win.
Title: Re: Manchester City v Everton
Post by: bluenuck on December 06, 2014, 12:17:06 AM
I think we will fair a little better here because of reasons already said. That we will be the ones countering ,and soaking up pressure. But let's not forget, Wolfsburg is no Citeh.

I see us sneaking out a draw. 2-2

Would like to see Mcgeady out there instead of pienaar. Mcgeady would suit the counter attack game better.

I like the look of their defense.  Demichelis is a great organizer, but slow and error prone.  Mangala is an accident waiting to happen, although he can be quite imposing on his day.

Agreed. We have far more menace on the counter with two proper wingers.  Their midfield won't enjoy tracking back on Barkley, either.

yeah I noticed that

the thing is though, anger sells....or rather in the internet's case, generates discussion, so they're reacting to that rather than focussing on the actual person their site spoke to

to be honest I struggle to read those type of preview pieces whenever I've stumbled on them, and much prefer @Shogun (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=1108) and his work on here

This is taken from an article in World Soccer by Nick Bidwell about Dortmund

" Everything that could go wrong is going wrong ........... Whether it is woeful defending , too many misplaced passes or profligacy in front of goal Dortmund have been there own worst enemies this season . And just to pile on the misery a lengthy injury list just never seems to shorten ".

"Faced by teams who are happy to sit back in numbers and give up possession, Dortmund tend to lose their poise , running out of creative ideas , over committing to attack , then being picked off late in the game . It is the footballing equivalent of rope a dope tactics ............................."

" The message is loud and clear . Give Dortmund space as their CL opponents have and they will capitalise . Man the barricades , make them dictate terms and you have a chance . Time for a touch more flexibility Jurgen " .

Given that Klopp and Martinez are 2 and 4 in the Managers index behind Diego Simone you wouldn't want to say it was a crap Manager that is to blame as much as inflexible tactics in the league .

Dortmund played really well against Bayern for 45 mins and then got rammed 2nd half ( echoes of us on occasions ) and I hope we can manage it for 90 against City . It will be a massive win for us in terms of confidence but I really feel defeat could spark a spiral .

Hopefully Aguero has an off day and one or two of our players will really step up in the same way that Fellaini did once against them a few seasons ago or Stracqualursi too.

If Naismith is fit and playing then that gives us a bit more hope, he always relishes those big games.

@Rodenplav64 (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=3475) what's the "managers index"?

Its a ranking of Europes most sought after Managers allegedly . Not sure if it just the magazines though . Most in demand doesn't mean most successful though as Guardiola , Ancelotti , Mourinho etc don't feature . I think it is those most likely to step up to a bigger team .

hoping rm can show some adaptability, and change our 'approach'.

the barcodes have just taken the lead against chelsea, so it could hopefully be a topsy-turvy day.

To me, it seems like RM is setting us up to be more defensive-minded, and look for the counter-attack.  Solid gamble.

And hey, Stoke has THREE goals against a good side, so today is apparently one of those "anything could happen" days.

From Evertonfc.com

Roberto Martinez has made two changes from the team that started against Hull City for this evening’s clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Tony Hibbert and Samuel Eto’o both step up from the bench, replacing Leon Osman and Ross Barkley who are named as substitutes.

It means a likely change in defence, with Seamus Coleman possibly playing in a more attack-minded role on the right.

Very interesting lineup, probably the first time Martinez has been a bit more defensive minded but I think he realises we need a bit more defensive steel and Hibbert certainly adds that.

It's been a while since Coleman has played as a right winger and his time there has seen fairly mixed results. But I think we will see him play more as a wing back who has more of a licence to get forward but will be asked on a number of occasions to bail out the defence.

Going to hard this but think we can get a draw, Hibbo to have Aguero in his sky rocket all game.

Everytime I've seen Hibbert play this season he's been sound, even when asked to play on the left.

As per the last few weeks - nothing in midfield in terms of energy or movement without McCarthy & Naismith.

Awful slow build-ups and Barry is finished at this level, getting caught in possession all the time.

Not working with Coleman on the wing.

All we can hope for is a bit of Mirallas/Lukaku magic.

Barry is having a stinker of a game, the ref is just as poor.
It is beyond me how he can see enough of Mangalas kick on Eto'o to give a yellow card, if he saw it at all it must be red.
And Fernando is a lucky boy to.

We can still win this, get the next goal and these are there for the taking.

We need to be more direct, and to try play arround Mangala as much as we can manage, the people who whine about us spending £28m on Lukaku need to take a look at Citys £32m centre back...

On paper, this was supposed to be one of the toughest fixtures in the league and we were already low on confidence but despite being 1-0 down I don't think we've been that bad.

The penalty incident was one of those where it could have gone either way, I've seen many of those being given and at other times ignored by the referee. But we've had a bit of fortune with Aguero being injured because otherwise I'm sure he would have scored at least one goal by now, plus Yaya Toure seems to have picked up an injury and even though he's still on the pitch, that could affect his performance.

We've had a few opportunities to get forward and I expect we'll get a couple more in the second half, we just have to make it count.

Taking off Besic for Barkley looks crackers.

Barry has been shit, looks slower than ever and has been booked.  So why leave him on and take his midfield partner off?
We might score one goal but if City score again it game over.  Why take off a defensive midfielder for one who is more likely to go for glory than muck in.

Thankfully Roberto didn't listen to anyone on here and he left Barry on.

We may have lost 1-0 but we shouldn't be downhearted at all. Very proud of our performance in the second half. I was uncertain about Martinez subbing off Besic for Barkley but that helped to change the game a bit in our favour and we were able to get the ball up the field more quickly.

Also much better from our defence, Howard even made a very good save. We looked a lot more calm and composed and while there were still one or two silly errors, we always had players who got us out of trouble.

My only big concern has to be our corners, clearly we are not good at whipping them into the penalty box and getting a tall player at the end of a cross. We should just concentrate instead on passing the ball and try and open up the opposition defence a bit more before waiting for the right opportunity to whip a ball into the box.

Barry is even worse, he can't be so docile on the ball like we're playing a game were players aren't closing us down every time we're on it. It's ridiculous that he is so slow on the ball.

Barkley won the ball with a great sliding tackle and then tried to skill his way out of the situation when there was 1-2 passes he could have played to keep us moving.

Overall it wasn't a bad performance, considering how awful we were on Wednesday. But we need to find ways of creating chances, we created very few against Hull, and even fewer today.

I don't think we need a radical change but we need to look at more passing options and the movement that is required to create them. We saw today for example that long balls on Lukaku's chest (as opposed to over his head) work really well, do that once or twice and you make the opposition think. We need to get the ball out wide to our full backs too, it's what worked well last season. We must keep them guessing, otherwise we're easy to defend against.

We can't always rely on the genius of Eto'o or a great shot by Mirallas.

Barkley has plenty of time to sort his game out, he's young. The likes of Barry should know better, though saying that he doesn't look right and a fitter Barry would do much better.

I've got a lot more confidence after that game in comparison to the Hull performance. We're not getting the results and falling short against the less illustrious opposition. City beat Bayern Munich3-2. Yes, Bayern did go down to ten men, but they did Bayern. They're champions of the Premier League and look like they're coming into form. I think we had a decent go there.

Firstly excellent use of the word queg.

We are in poor form but it's fair to say a number of our players are underperforming (Howard, Baines, Coleman, Barkley, Barry to name a few) for a variety of reasons. There were signs Martinez is trying to address our problems today, it was brave to setup as we did today and bringing Barkley central was brave to. Martinez does need to take even more risks though, something he seemed to do last season. Was amazed he didn't at least take Hibbert off to bring another attacking player on second half.

Looks like it's all about the cups this year, gonna achieve fuck all in the league.

Ref was worse than useless but we can't lay the blame with him, we deserved fuck all from that game.

No. What we would've deserved was one point 'cause Hart pulled out an amazing save from the other real chance of the game. The other-one was saved by Howard. We're obliged blaming the ref.

Barkley-supporters will be pleased to know Twitter is full of other clubs fans not wanting him now 'cos he's shit and dives...

Who gives a fuck what other clubs fans think. Chelsea have Oscar and Hazard that do it for them, City have Nasri and Milner, United have Young and so on....... If players get away with it when they can then they will, unfortunately it's become a big part of the game. Brilliant this, shows his streak of steel about him which i like.

Was pleased with Barkley, Lukaku, Mirallas first half and Eto'o. Slow again though and Barry was woeful

Remember 2005(?) when we were near bottom, we played Sunderland at their gaff NYE , they peppered our goal and we were lucky, up steps Cahill in the 90th minute from a corner and we won 1-0, we went on a run were we only lost once between then and May.

People need to chill the fuck out.

For the record, I still think we punt the FA Cup, and that we should.  Don't have the depth.

Revised goals have to be insuring top half in the League (ie, saving face) and winning Europa.

Things must be pretty bad if we use them as a yardstick. So let's not. We're nowhere near as bad as we were then. But we do need to change our game a bit to catch up.

Sorry mate but this is the kind of attitude everyone slated Moyes for having. "We're a small club and we should be thankful for even being near the top half of the league".

After where we've finished in the league the last few years, looking at the squad we have, and the signings we've made. People are entitled to expect a fuck lot more than what we're showing this season.

Playing deeper and allowing him to run at the opposition. He can see what's in front of him rather than having his back to goal, similar to Lukaku really.

Would like to see him start on Thurs in the CM spot next to Besic.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm appealing for some calm. I'm attempting to stave off the meltdown central, club in crisis, Martinez out merchants that rear their spectacularly fucking ugly heads whenever we lose a game.

There are issues, of course there are issues. Let's talk about them rationally.

It really doesn't help when your spine is fucking wrecked. Stones becomes important, injured. Mc Carthy is vital, injured. Naismith in great form, injured. These are excuses but that doesn't make them invalid.

Utterly hopeless display from Marriner. If he referees a Premier League match next week then the FA need shooting.

We did look more lively once Barkley was introduced, as he gave us more directness going forward, but apart from the Lukaku shot and Eto'o's acrobatic effort we didn't test Hart, which was worrying once again.

It's irritating how pedestrian we are in possession lately too. Too many times we've looked to spring a counter and then, within five passes, the ball is back with Howard. Either the players need to break in greater numbers or our passing needs to be crisper and quicker, but whatever system we play right now isn't working.

Sure, most of the players on the pitch today haven't had a rest in 2/3 weeks, so hopefully resting a few of them for the Krasnodar match (Lukaku, Coleman, Distin, Howard, Barry and maybe Jagielka) will rectify some jaded legs ahead of the QPR match, but we also need to be more inventive and creative to score more goals, which will obviously lead to wins and more confidence again.

Beating Krasnodar, QPR and get a decent result at Southampton and things will look better.

Rationally speaking we are fairly crap with no plan B and a lot of deadwood. Not a moment for panic certainly but surely a moment for bitter diasppointment. A half-arsed City were only in danger for a few moments near the end. As awful as we were tonight only the ref got City a win. Martinez was no doubt proud and thrilled etc etc.

Indeed, yet listening to Sky, it was only Man City suffering from not having their best 11 on the pitch and the poor things have another game on Tuesday.

Everton have good players, a capable manager, Ok it's been a rough run since, but it's only 9 days since we beat the team second in the German league at their place.

It will come good, of that I have no doubt.

Martinez sounded pretty gutted to me (compared to his usual self anyway).

I do think when things turn round for us (and I am confident we will) we will be flying. We aren't getting things massively wrong.

That's the most frustrating part of it. It's right there in front of us, but it just isn't happening for a number of reasons. Injuries, bounces, luck, poor form, 50-50 calls....... I think we were almost spoiled from last season where a ton of things went right. I don't think we are this bad, but I think we are somewhere in the middle of last season and this season. We still need more.

Pretty hard game to watch. We played.... below average overall, and the ref wasn't up to snuff, but I still think we deserved something from that.

And I echo the WTF on the corners. What has happened to that aspect of our game?? It is brutal!!

He hasn't dived anyway . Lampard put his arm on him as he was turning and he just went with the momentum . Even the nolan one he just reacted to Nolan making a challenge which he then pulled out of . Barkley jumped straight up but the ref had already blown and Nolan was already in his face . The ref could have just waved play on . Just look at his face when Lampard got the decision .

Barkley needs to fuck off with the silky skills and shoddy passes in our own half, he nearly cost us a goal there because of it.

Barkley was the reason we got back in the game. ok he lost the ball a couple of times, that's because he was fkin brave with it and didn't just play the safe option. If you want slow, sideways passing, just leave Barkley on the bench.
