Everton

Everton all but confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a comprehensive 4-1 victory in Bern last Thursday. Romelu Lukaku scored his first Everton hat trick in the previous leg which was the second of his career after scoring a hat trick against Manchester United whilst playing for West Brom. Lukaku is now Everton's joint third highest scorer in European Competition, one goal behind Andy Gray (5) and a couple of goals behind top scorer, Fred Pickering (6). Lukaku score the 11th hat trick of the competition this year and the first of the knock out stage.

Everton recorded the second largest win of the first round ties, only outshone by Napoli who won their match by four goals to nil.  Only Ajax, Liverpool and Zenit St Petersburg recorded victory from the 8 teams that dropped down from the Champions League whilst Olympiakos (2-0 v Dnipro) and Sporting Lisbon (2-0 Wolfsburg) both lost without an away goal in their first Europa League matches this season. In the 8 matches where a group winner faced a group runner up, there were 3 wins recorded for either side and a couple of draws. Guingamp were the lowest ranked side in the tournament to record victory with a 2-1 home win against 9 man Dynamo Kyiv who had two players sent off.

Young Boys

Young Boys were handed their heaviest ever home defeat in the UEFA Cup/Europa League with a 4-1 defeat in the home leg. Young Boys' biggest away win in the competition came in a 3-0 win against FC Midtjylland in the 2012-13 edition of the tournament during the play off round, a scoreline which would still see them exit the competition if repeated on Thursday. However, their biggest away defeat in the competition came in the second qualifying round in 2007 with a 5-1 defeat to RC Lens after drawing the first leg 1-1. Guillaume Hoarau is the second highest scorer in the competition this season with 6 goals, Red Bull Salzburg's Alan leads the way with 8 goals.

No club has come back from a 1st leg deficit of three goals since the advent of the Europa League in 09-10 with Fulham's comeback against Juventus being the most famous since the change of format. Middlesbrough produced two famous comebacks in the UEFA Cup in the 2005-06 season after going down 1-0 at home in the second leg against Basel to win 4-1 and go through 4-3 on aggregate following a 2-0 defeat in Switzerland. In the Semi finals they went 2-0 down in the second leg at home (3-0 agg) and came back to win the match 4-0 thanks to a last minute Massimo Maccarone goal. BSC Young will need to score at least 4 goals to have a chance of progressing.

I wonder what the chances are of ITV4 showing an interview with an Everton player before and after the Liverpool game.

The Young Boys badge looks like something some spotty 80's teen would sew onto their jeans or denim jacket.

You could have done with a closer scoreline really.

Should still be a good turnout tough.

Yeah, the was kind of the plan when we ordered them. Not that I'm unhappy with the result obviously but we bought them on Wednesday thinking that if it was a close call tickets would sell quickly on Thursday and Friday. Had a look earlier and there's still a pretty good availability in most parts of the ground, I dare say we might get close to 30,000. Trying the Paddock but I'm wishing we'd gone for the Upper Bullens now as it looks like there's some decent seats still there and I prefer a higher view.

Bit of a strange one this, don't know what to expect. The Leicester game kind of threw a spanner in the works, had we have won that, then seen these off in style on Thursday it would have built great momentum heading into a tough game against the arse.

Because of what happened sunday it's all gone a bit flat again, I kind of want a slightly weakened more experimental side, but not too weakened, knowing us, fucking this up somehow isn't beyond us, especially the way we have been this season.

Looking forward to the draw on Friday afternoon more than this game (especially after Sunday). Still really deflated about that tbh. This game's over already. Feel a bit for @Shogun (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=1108) having to write a detailed preview for this game.

Might be a good chance for some squad players to show what they've got, but let's be honest even if they play well, they won't be getting a chance in the league games. The manager has shown that if a player comes in and does well when we're rotating or when there's injuries, that they probably won't be given the chance to keep their spot. Must be difficult being a squad player for us at the moment, because barring a catastrophic injury to another player in your position, you're basically not getting a look in.

On a positive note, it's great that we're basically already through and can't wait for the draw for the next round and more European adventures.

For me it's not all over yet. If we play a weakened team and mess this up then all hell will break loose so we should start strong and withdraw players as needed.

Even 3-0 wouldn't be enough for them. They're not good enough to win 4-0 or 4-1 with pens or 5-1 or 6-2 etc at Goodison and we're not that bad.

-----------------------Joel---------------------
Coleman-----Alcaraz----Jagielka---Garbutt
-----------------Barry-----Besic----------------
Atsu-----------------Barkley----------Mirallas
------------------------Kone--------------------

That is the lineup I would go with, think we will have them covered, hoping Gibson isn't going to start think we need him Sunday as he is someone who actually takes some risks and passes the ball forward which could be very valuable against Arsenal

I don't even think if we put an average team out with a few changes they'd have a prayer of getting one of those results. I know it's been a rough season but we're really not bad enough to lose 4-0 at home to YB.

If they are going to have any remote prayer they're going to have to come at us from the off needing 4 goals or more away, and there'll be so much room for us to play and attack them because of that, I just can't see it ever happening, unless say we got 2 or 3 players sent off.

Sounds like Osman and Pienaar are considerations for the squad.

But Martinez added: "Tim has come back from injury and needs to play. It's not an issue whatsoever. He is a very experienced footballer and in European nights you need that experience."

Perhaps if Robles needs to ask for a number 0 haircut and stop shaving if he has any chance of making the team.

Unless Martinez is trying to keep some consistency in the team to hopefully iron out the gliches? As the saying goes, don't change a winning team unless injuries/suspensions force it. I think you're right though.. would have been good to try some new players, especially  Kone and Garbutt. Let's see them play on grass?

BSC Young boys defeated Basel 4-2 on Monday, which is pretty good form. Although we have a near unbeatable lead it's probably not a good idea to underestimate too much.

A couple of changes would be welcomed. Atsu and Gibson, in particular, seem just about ready for a proper run.

Atsu won't be playing as he's ill according to Roberto yesterday. Looking forward to tonight, first game I've been to for 2 months (Krasnodar being the last one) although seeing the weather now I'm gonna regret getting a front row seat for the Street End if it stays rainy all day

it's fair enough, for how often the shite get brought up on here like.

I think Martinez wants to steamroll these at home, no point putting out a krasnodar-esque team and performance and letting the pressure mount.

Fuck these 3-0 and charge into the weekend with our heads up.

YB fans travel in numbers:

More than 2,000 Young Boys fans are expected to make the trip to Merseyside – and Sutter has highlighted the importance of rewarding the commitment shown by the travelling supporters.

He added: “It doesn’t matter where we play because the fans will always be with us and we know the atmosphere they produce is outstanding.

“I think back to the Liverpool game in England a couple of years ago and people were maybe a bit surprised by how loud the fans were.

“The fans are travelling even with the situation we are in and with the time and money it involves coming over here, so I think that shows how good the support is for the team.”

Bobby needs to field a strong side in this. We do not want a gang of rezzies out there - can you imagine the atmosphere if we concede 2 early goals?

We're still going to have a tough game on our hands here, I don't think they'll turn up with a bad attitude ala Lille.

I'd give Gibson a run out in the Barkley role, let's see what he can do a bit further forward with his passing range. Atsu is out, so he'll have to start Kev. Hopefully see a couple of cameos from Pienaar and Osman (remember them!!??)

It will be nice to be looking at the next round come 10pm on here. COYB!!

Although we got a great result in the first leg and had a lot of other chances, YB could also have scored 3 or 4.
We need to treat it as if the tie is 0-0 and pay them full respect...

The Independent:

The visitors will have a point to prove after their humiliation at the Stade de Suisse and their boss, Uli Forte, will undoubtedly have them fired up.

It is also not out the question, with the Toffees' defensive frailties being exposed once more during the 2-2 draw with Premier League bottom club Leicester City last weekend.

As leaders Chelsea proved earlier in the season, beating Roberto Martinez's side 6-3, it is possible to leave Goodison Park with a handsome victory.

Young Boys are second in the Swiss league, winning seven of their last eight games, and they are only five points off leaders Basel.

Young Boys away record is pretty poor by all accounts which is encouraging, also they are going to have to chase the game leaving them more exposed at the back for our counter attack, so by all accounts it should be an easy game to consolidate our lead, however this is Everton and we never make things easy.
COYB !!

Martinez talks about players worrying over having something to lose, which causes problems, and when we met him last year he said he was trying to change that type of attitude - and last year it seemed we'd done that for a while - but it seems now that it's as big a problem as ever

We shouldn't be - if only for the reason that we're good at exploiting the space if they're bombing forward.

If there was 1 goal in it then there'd be much more scope for them keeping it tight which would lead to our own nerves setting in.

I think we'll win 3-0.

Agreed. Pick up a goal early to kill off the tie, then grab a couple extra as YB chase it until they pack it in. Kone to get on the scoresheet.

Yes I would say so. They both start the play off from a deep position and shield the defence. I would consider Gibson a poor man's Barry in every respect. Barry is a better passer of the ball than Gibson.

Really?

Surprised at that statement.

I actually think Gibson is one of the best passers of the ball we have at the club. I'd even go as far as to say that his passing is the best part of his game.

Gibson with us is another instance of Lucas Leiva syndrome. The less he plays the better he's perceived to be.

He has good vision, and spots passes a lot of players don't, but the execution is often far from perfect. The weight of his pass is inconsistent and he often telegraphs them a lot. Barry's range of passing is under-rated in my view. he's been poor this season but last season he was spreading it about delightfully.

I would say barry is the best passer in our team, followed by Baines.

Gibson splits a defence more often than Barry.

His game against spurs a few years back was the best passing display I've ever seen from an Everton player.

Barry just does it on a more consistent basis and uses the ball much better. There's a touch of Gerrard about Gibson, in that he tries the difficult pass a bit too much.

Still, good to see him back. He's a decent asset if he can stay fit.

I kind of think Howard is partly responsible there. Not with the 1st save but surely he's got to try and clear everything out and get to the rebound 1st. He seems to duck the physical confrontation and wave his leg at it instead. Not saying the outcome would have been different but his efforts appear cowardly to me

No good blaming Howard for shit he can't do anything about (like that one). That's when it becomes agenda driven, and not about what's best for the club.

no agenda for me. not my style. just desperate for us to win.

Only really Inter that I think we'd struggle with as we hate compact teams.

YEAH WE PLAY BOTH OUR LEGS WHILE THEY SPLIT THEIR FIXTURES, I ASSUME BECAUSE THE EUROPA LEAGUE HAS MORE GAMES TO PLAY!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!? x

Can't we make Gibson a cyborg like the KGB did with Barry on "Archer"?

I'm completely ok with a mid-table finish if we win the Europa League.  Which we are totally gonna do.  Thursday footy is the bestest.

Let's not argue with each other when we're 7-2 up in Europe eh!

As been mentioned, Gibson has been bloody brilliant. Should their keeper have been sent off on the pen? I guess Naismith whacking the ball at the corner flag prevented a booking.

EL has an extra couple of rounds. Finishing up the round of 32 today, while the CL is halfway through the round of 16.

A nice draw tomorrow starting with an away tie. I don't fear anyone in this comp any more, just as long as Howard can sort himself out.

Some decent away trips possible. Wouldn't really want Moscow, St. Petersburg, Dnipro, or Kiev. Pretty good chance of an Italian trip, given current results. Brugge is probably the "easiest" draw possible, in my opinion.

After the last 16 matches, so they'll have to go another two matches.

I think Rom would be able to go without one but no chance with Naisy.

Missed it. What did he say?

Basically said we over achieved last year, no one expected us to be there, apparently last season we should have been where we are now, basically saying we are a bottom half of the table team.

Granted we are on this seasons form, but I hate all this "over achieving" shite people go on about, you can't fluke something spread out over 38 games, the table is roughly a true reflection as to how good you are.

We have been shite this season due to the stubborn tactics of Martinez and a poor pre season.

Basically he was waffling on about shite.

Manager reaction

Everton 3-1 Young Boys (Agg: 7-2)

Everton manager Roberto Martinez on ITV1: "We've seen what a good team Young Boys are. They had a real attacking attitude and we saw a lot of chances. We wanted it to be open and took our chances well.
"To score seven goals in two games is a great achievement
"Romelu Lukaku has been creating a huge amount of chances, his goal scoring quality is fantastic and to score five goals is fantastic. His work rate was also very pleasing.
"It is a shame there is no more British representation but we're looking forward to the draw. We've been supported by huge numbers around Europe."

I am more than afraid that we actually are on the verge of loosing Garbutt...everytime he gets the chance he takes it - still he almost never gets the chance.

I'm amazed to think we're the only English club left in this, given that it's the first season that the winners get CL qualification, and given that the likes of Spurs and the RS will prioritise and slog all season long in the league and probably not make it via that route anyway. Also this from another source:

"The Belgian striker, who scored twice against the Swiss outfit, was thought to have picked up an injury but Martinez insists he will be fine for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

Asked if there were any fresh fitness worries ahead of the Arsenal game, the Toffees manager said: “No. Romelu was feeling a little bit tired, but we didn’t have any knocks or concerns.”
