Talked to a mater of mine who's not a huge football fan but managed to get tickets to see the Chelsea game on Saturday. From the little football he watches coupled with the game he saw live, he asked me whether Tim Howard had been our most consistent performer over recent seasons. I said he'd been adequate to good but by no means our most consistent player and that he'd need replacing in the next season or two.

However, it did get me thinking about who has been our most consistent performer over the last few seasons. I concluded that it would have to almost certainly be Phil Jagielka but was interested to know other's thoughts..

Not much to choose between Jags, Howard, Distin and Baines really
You think Lou Bega knocked it out of the park with Mambo number 1?!No but he kept at it!

I'd agree with Jagielka, Baines isn't far behind though.

Jagielka, Distin or Baines. I think Baines though. He's had a bad game about four times in years.

I would have definitely said Baines before this season but just feel he was a bit off form for the couple of months before he re-signed, although he was out with injury for 4 weeks. Having said that, bar West Ham he had his best game all season against Chelsea. Hopefully a return to his very best form!

Jags. He has the odd shocker every now and then, but he's been brilliant for 6 years now.

Also Baines and Distin have to be up there.

Baines over Jags I think, Jags has the odd wobble now and then.

Depends if we're defining "consistent" as "plays at the same level all the time" (Howard), or "plays at the same high level all the time" (Jagielka).

Can't decide between Jagielka and Baines . Howard has been consistently average.

Given how few goals we usually concede (derby games aside) I can't look any further forward than the whole if defence for being consistent. Yes they are outstanding individuals in their own right and been pretty consistent as individuals but as a unit they're generally outstanding. Solid in defence as a flat back four and lethal in attack through the best fullbacks in the league.

I think it's slightly unfair to pick out an individual but if poked in the eye with a shitty stick is have to go for the Captain.
