I wouldn't have thought 3 incoming players was to much to ask for this window. In fact given how we broke even in the summer I'd have thought there's enough cash in reserve for a blowout even if we have payed off the long term debt with the new tv money.

I guess it's how we prioritise the positions we fell short of filling, which we know were goalkeeper, a midfielder and an attacker. We really wouldn't want to be going into next summer having failed again to fill these gaps and possibly be losing Lukaku and still relying on Jags and Barry every week.
I don't think money is an issue at all just the quality of player available is not normally high in Jan
We don't wanna sign players for the sake of it
Heisenberg thoughts on Lukaku :
If he was English his value would be 10-15.

It's well known we fell badly short of expectations in the summer with the manager and owner admitting as much, this is the first time to rectify those mistakes so it'd hardly be signing players for the sake of it Jim.

As you say money shouldn't be an issue so neither should the quality of player we can buy clubs will always sell if they're offered enough incentive.

I'm sort of with Ross on this one. We fucked up in the summer. We now have a specialist DOF, and a big part of his role is surely identifying players. I don't think its unreasonable to expect to sign 3 players in the next window, for a squad that will need a big overhaul over the next couple of windows.

Steve Walsh is presumably working on this stuff for a certain percentage of his working week. I don't think an 'oh well, January's a tough window' excuse will go down very well, and nor should it.

Is a two year job to rebuild this squad.

There's a massive overhaul needed and it'll take more than two windows to complete.

January is all about squad players, cast offs, and youngsters.

That's just some arbitrary timeframe you've plucked from nowhere.

Nobody's talking about completing this squad this is about filling in the gaps they failed to do in the summer at the next available opportunity.

It would be tho if We are buying players for positions who are a long way down the list cos original targets aren't available

It's the availability of players though.

I'd say our best target market will be players at clubs in smaller European leagues that need the money.

PL players, or players at CL clubs in decent/good leagues, are not going to be easy to obtain as their current clubs don't have to sell and even then the player might want to stick things out until the summer when there are more options.

There'd be plenty of people moaning, as there were with Bolasie, if we're spending far too much on players who are unlikely to be from the top drawer.

So you're saying unless we buy our top target there's no point? Because that of course applies to any transfer window, winter or summer, and it'd get you nowhere.

We need to sign two players capable of walking into the first team, at least, in January. If nothing else to plug the gaps left by Gana and Bolasie. From February onwards then the squad looks healthier when the two African lads come back in and we have genuine competition for places until the summer and the inevitable Lukaku circus and all that will entail. As well as finding a new goalkeeper, centre half and more options up front, plus right back, left back, playmaker, centre midfield......

No
I'm saying there is no point on spending for spending sake
They will hopefully have a list of obtainable targets who improve our team.
If they prove to be unattainable then we don't get anyone

Depay, Schneiderlin and Payet could all be genuinely available in January.  The quality is there.  Lets see if we have the balls to step up.

Agreed.

Also midsize/larger clubs in the best leagues who aren't in Europe and are unlikely to qualify for Europe next season. Clubs like Marseille, Schalke, Wolfsburg, Inter and Valencia are all struggling in their leagues. They might have quality players who don't want to stay, as an example.

I just refuse to believe that there aren't 2 or 3 players in the entirety of European football that we couldn't sign in January who could make us instantly better. And now that Walsh is on the case 24/7, and very handsomely paid, I would imagine that Farhad Moshiri might have similar expectations, especially after the inadequacies of the summer.

If we have to pay an extra few million, so be it.

I think people are getting way ahead of themselves. It's difficult to get good players top come to your club for about 10 very good reasons. Won't stop people having a meltdown about it though.

Let me stop you right there, there is no way on Earth we would get Payet, so put that one to bed straight away.

And apart from anything else we're still reshaping the scouting set up...

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-appoint-laurence-stewart-scouting-12179190

It's difficult but there needs to be patience.

It's unlikely given all the structural changes that we've made that we're going to be in a prime position to just reel off a list of targets who are all top quality players and cherry pick however many we want.
