The pessimist in me is predicting an awful performance where we do just enough to win, buying Koeman time to deliver bad results against Lyon, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

The optimist in me seems to have gone missing.

Hopefully, that lineup is functional. Would be nice to see us play well.

I'm still skeptical. 2 DMs, Rooney and Sigurdsson sharing the pitch (with the latter probably forced out to the left). I'm not convinced we can make those things work regularly.

At the very least, the lack of Cuco Martina suggests that Koeman doesn't have a death wish.

Here's what I don't understand about the 2 DM setup. Every week, Gana finds himself in areas in or around the final third where he needs to find a good forward pass and he doesn't have the skills to do that. The space is there but we're wasting those opportunities by giving them to a player who isn't good at moving the ball, especially in tight areas.

Why not drop one of Schneiderlin/Gana, ask the remaining DM to stay deep, and take a defensive downgrade at the open position to add quality in the final third? If we were to do a better job of keeping the ball in attacking areas, the defensive downgrade might not even matter.

Seriously, though. Gana is basically our playmaker and chances keep falling to him. This is a major skill-role mismatch.

Good thing Glen Murray doesn't understand the offside rule.

Again, Koeman appears to have approximately zero good ideas for this group of players. He can be as committed to the project as he likes but it's not going to paper over what are genuine tactical problems.

I know it's an attractive idea to be patient in an era where pretty much no one is, but I don't see what you get for persisting with this.

Davies for Gana, Mirallas/Niasse for Rooney, please.

Everton touches inside box in first half: 3
Everton passes completed into box: 1

They're compact and working hard to deny that space but fucking hell.

Dear Ronald Koeman,

Can we at least watch Tom Davies for 10 minutes? Please?

Pickford is good. So there's that.
