5. John Heitinga

John HeitingaDate of Birth: November 15, 1983

Clubs: Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Everton

Position: Centre back

Nationality: Dutch

Finest Everton moment: An outstanding performance in the centre of midfield against Hull at Goodison in the 2009/10 season.

Like team-mate, Phil Jagielka, Heitinga was initially brought in as a utility player from Atletico Madrid. Despite not enjoying a great stint in Spain, Heitinga was believed to have broken Everton’s wage structure to sign for the Blues. The Dutchman took Joleon Lescott’s number 5 shirt upon signing although some fans were slightly wary of breaking the pay structure for his signature. Heitinga went on to have an excellent campaign for the Blues, mainly at the centre of defence with Sylvain Distin in Phil Jagielka’s absence. Noted for his commitment, passing range and footballing brain, Heitinga has established himself as one of the cornerstones of Everton’s first team.
