Finest Everton moment: Scoring the winning penalty against Manchester United at Wembley in 2009 FA Cup Semi-Final shoot-out.
After Sheffield United’s relegation saga was finally resolved in the summer of 2007, Phil Jagielka became Moyes’ first signing of the summer with James Beattie and Gary Naysmith going the other way. Initially brought in as a utility player, who could fit in at right back, centre half and centre midfield, Jagielka established himself alongside Joleon Lescott in the centre of defence as Everton prepared for Yobo’s departure for the African Cup of Nations. When Yobo returned, he found himself consigned to the bench after a series of spectacular performances from both Jagielka and Lescott. His excellent form continued into the following season although Jagielka would get injured in April, 2009, just a week after sending Everton to the FA Cup final, meaning he’d miss the aforementioned final and a large chunk of the following campaign. Since coming back, Jagielka has gone back into the side but hasn’t been as impressive as he was before his injury.
