8 – James Beattie

Everton’s new record signing, James Beattie joined from Southampton in January 2005 for £6.5m.

Signed when not fully fit, he was thrown in at Plymouth in the FA Cup, where he set up Leon Osman for the first goal of the match.

Scored at his old club on his return, and claimed a sketchy goal against Sunderland which took a MASSIVE deflection off the defender, his start to an Everton career was looking promising.

And then it happened. 8 minutes into the game against Chelsea, he took 2 attempts at headbutting William Gallas, the second one connecting, and he picked up a 3 match ban.

In that time, he got beaten up in Birmingham, Everton were knocked out of the FA Cup, and the Everton faithful hoped he would repay them on his return, at Anfield.

Beattie played the second half apparently, although I didnt see him, but the fourth official definately had his number as the player coming on.

He then tweaked his medial ligaments in training and announced he would be out for four weeks, or the end of the season.
